"Excuse me, can you tell me where the bread is?"

Marian Hawke looked up from where she was restocking some dried soup packets, on an end cap of an aisle with a large sign overhead that read "Bread, bagels, English muffins".

"Oh, you know what, we might be out!" She looked around in feigned distress. "Let me go check the back. You stay right there."

As she raced into the employee-only corridor in the back of the store, she made sure her "Carver" nametag was securely in place. Her brother had been missing it for a little over a month, but so far, he didn't suspect her.

Serves him right for transferring to the meat department and leaving her alone in grocery. The meat department manager, a woman named Meredith, was notoriously difficult to work with; but he claimed it was better than the endless restocking amidst the unwashed public.

That, and it kept him away from the produce section. The produce manager, Orsino, often got into shouting matches with Meredith over trivial matters: who got to use the dolly to unload a truck first; who got to park under the lone shade tree in the employee section of the parking lot; and whose department was displayed first in the weekly ad.

Marian wandered along the back corridor until she came to a large, walk-in freezer. She eased the door open to peek inside, and was delighted to see Fenris organizing boxes of frozen food.

"I'm hiding," she confessed when he raised an eyebrow at her.

"Then by all means, join me," he replied with a smirk. "What is it now? Did Dumar tell you to smile more?"

"I think he learned his lesson last time. That new HR lady, Elthina? I don't know what she said, but he looked about ready to cry after."

"Good." He swung a heavy box up onto a high shelf as if it were nothing. "Then what brought you here this time?"

"An idiot," she sighed.

"Carver?" he guessed.

A delighted cackle bubbled out of her. "Oh, I wish. But no, a customer."

"Are you two making out in there again?" Isabella poked her head in and wrinkled her nose at them. "It's too bloody cold in here. At least go to the break room like normal people."

"Not everyone likes to be watched," Marian retorted as she emerged from the freezer. "What are you doing back here? The liquor department doesn't get deliveries to the freezer."

"I heard Dumar was looking for you, so I made a wild guess." She smirked as Fenris emerged from the freezer next. "You know, those freezers aren't sound proof."

"They haven't heard us so far," Fenris deadpanned while Marian giggled.

"Marian Hawke to customer service," the harried voice of Dumar crackled from the overhead speakers. "Marian Hawke to customer service."

"Shit," she sighed. "Maybe I should get a job at Target. Maybe the people there are less dysfunctional."

"You could ask Varric," Isabella suggested. "He's been working there for, what, a month now?"

"Maybe I'll text him," Marian mused as she set off to face her angry manager.

Happy Birthday world renowned photographer Harry Benson, born in Glasgow December 2nd 1929, making 93 today!

And yet another with nothing online about his early life,  Harry left school aged thirteen and began working for a local paper, the Hamilton Advertiser. In 1958 he graduated to the cut-throat centre of the tabloid press on London’s Fleet Street, working for the Daily Sketch and then the Daily Express. 

On an assignment for the Daily Express, Benson travelled with the Beatles to America in 1964. Continuing to live and work in the US ever since, Benson’s photographs have graced the pages of the most influential magazines and newspapers of the twentieth century. 

This guy has been around during some of the worlds most famous events, he was feet away when Bobby Kennedy was assassinated; in the room when Nixon resigned; with Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Meredith march; and with Coretta Scott King at her husband’s funeral. Benson chronicled the building of the Berlin wall and its fall, and covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Celebrities Benson has photographed include Bobby Fischer, Elizabeth Taylor, Muhammad Ali  and Michael Jackson, hi pics have graced the pages of the top magazines including Life, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker and was the subject of a BBC Scotland documentary, called Photography: Harry Benson which was written by William McIlvanney.

Benson has taken over one-hundred cover shots for People Magazine, and his photography has been featured in Architectural Digest and Newsweek. He has had more than forty solo gallery exhibitions and has had fifteen books of his photography published.

Harry Benson’s photography is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Both museums exhibited the 2006-2007 exhibition, Harry Benson: Being There, and the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow held a major retrospective of the photographer in 2008.

Benson was honoured with a Doctor of Letters from the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in 2007 and has too many awards to his name than I have room to post here! He lives in Wellington, Florida with his wife, Gigi, who works with him on his book and exhibition projects.
