Music Spotlight: DOMi & JD BECK

DOMi & JD BECK, the Jazz duo consisting of French keyboardist, DOMi and American drummer, JD, met in 2018 and have been making music together ever since. They've managed to bring back classic jazz sounds with a modern twist and their creativity in music keeps us wanting more. Check out what they had to say.

How did you get started in music?

Neither of us come from a musical family.

JD: I asked my parents to play piano around 5 years old, then switched to drums around 8.

DOMi: My parents love music so much and jazz records would always be played in the house. My dad made me start drums and piano when I was 2-3 years old because he wanted my future occupation to be creative and artistic, even though he had no idea how to play or teach it. Haha.

Favorite moment in your career thus far?

Releasing our debut album and being in the studio with Herbie Hancock. We can’t pick between those two.

You’ve already worked with a plethora of amazing artists - who are some of your dream collaborations?

We really want them to happen naturally so we’re not gonna say anything yet, but lots of eclectic artists.

What was your reaction when finding out you were nominated for a GRAMMY?

We were at soundcheck for a show in London, and to be honest we didn’t think much about it. Putting out our album was much more of an accomplishment than being nominated for an award that puts artists against each other.

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

DOMi: I would work halftime as a professional waterslide tester and the other half as a professional sleeper. Those are real jobs, I’m not kidding.

JD: I don't know… a film director, or something with computers.

Lightning round! Describe each of the following in one word: Who you are, what you value the most, and what you’d be if you were a food item.

We are stinky, we value creativity and we’d be a margherita pizza with extra basil.

What can we look forward to from you next?

A lot of shows and tours this year, and we’re gonna go crazy for Album 2.

DOMi & JD BECK: Tiny Desk Concert

The two musicians come from two completely different parts of the world. James Beck began cutting his teeth as young as eleven at jam sessions in Dallas. DOMi, aka DOMi Louna, was born in France and raised on jazz, and enrolled at the Conservatoire Régional du Grand Nancy at five. DOMi eventually made her way to the States via a Presidential Scholarship from the Berklee College of Music. The two met at a trade show in 2018 and have been inseparable since, playing sets on YouTube and driving the internet nuts. Before they knew it, they were rubbing elbows with the upper echelon in jazz, R&B, and hip-hop.
