mike shakes his head as he holds the phone up to his ear, fighting back a smile as sonny’s eyes meet his from the couch. “i am on the phone,” he tells him, lifting his cell a little before holding it back against his ear.

“you’re on hold,” sonny counters, and he holds up the magazine he was flipping through. “so go ahead and agree that at our wedding i get dibs on the white tuxedo.”

“dom,” mike says, fond exasperation on his face, as usual. “i’m serious.”

“and i’m not? mike, i mean we both agree you can pull off a tux, but since i proposed i think i can claim the color i want. and white’s gonna wash you out, baby. that irish skin’s gonna look fluorescent.”

when mike looks over again, sonny’s sprawled out across the entire length of their couch, making himself more than comfortable. he slowly starts making his way over, making sure the music on the other end is still pleasant and keeping him on hold. “irish skin?”

“you get burned if the light on your desk looks at you funny,” sonny says with a wave of his hand. “how do you feel about blue for one of our colors?”

it’s that moment mike uses to snatch the magazine out of sonny’s hand. moves with the speed of a trained soldier to dance to the other side of the kitchen as sonny shouts out his protest. and uses his extra two inches to lift the magazine high in the air, laughing as he feels sonny swat at his ass as he moves past him again and again.

“i’m gonna kick your ass, dodds!” sonny shouts, laughing so loud that the woman who finally answers on the other end can let out an exasperated sigh.

“aren’t you two getting married?” liv asks, and there’s a smile in her voice that mike matches with his own.

“he said i have irish skin.”

Day Ten: Flare-Up

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit: Mike Dodds

Years down the line, long after Mike has put up his badge and stepped off the dirty New York City streets, he still sits on the couch and feels the twinge in his arm from the bullet. It must show on his face when Sonny comes back, warm Italian air flooding through the open door while he brings in the reusable bags stuffed with food from the local market. He fixes Mike with a concerned look before hurrying to put refrigerated goods up. The butter and cheese and more delicate fruits go into the fridge, but everything else sits atop their counters so he can come to kneel in front of Mike.

“Your arm?” he asks, smiling reassuringly even as the creases at the corners of his eyes deepen in worry. “How bad?”

“Three. I’ll be okay.”

“I’ll make you a cold compress.”

Sonny presses a kiss to the top of Mike’s head on his way back to his feet. Italy looks good on him, Mike thinks. His hair has gone from silvery to a deep grey, and his skin has a golden glow to it from the days they spend on the water. He smiles so much more easily than he ever did when they were in the city, and the frequent grins are so bright and open. Granted, there are still countless nightmares and intrusive flashbacks, but he loves to be here, cooking for a local restaurant with the freedom to adjust dishes and create new ones. Mike likes it too. His father isn’t here to look over his shoulder as he writes. His first novel was published a little under a year before the big move- it had financed their upheaval of their unhappy lives, after all. Sonny has been teaching him the language, too; he’s slow, and only really confident with enough to get by, but between him and the friendly old women in his restaurant who sit there all morning over coffee while Mike writes, he’s getting better. 

His thoughts are disrupted by Sonny returning with their gel ice pack wrapped in a kitchen towel. Sonny sits down beside him and holds it to his arm, even if Mike could easily hold it in his other hand. The gesture is something so small but intimate.

“I love you,” he tells him, because it’s true.

Sonny ducks his head and gets that same shy smile as always when he says, “I love you too.”
