Introducing... Dragonsoul!

Forgot to post this yesterday, but yeah, I'm finally officially unvieling the title of my upcoming How to Train Your Dragon fic! Along with some conceptual ramblings I jotted down mostly for my own reference, but I'll go ahead and share some of it with ya'll for funsies. It's kind of a mess at this point, but what fic isn't in its early planning stages? Soooo let's dive in!

There's more of course, including an actual timeline of events I'm still working out, but I think that's enough for now. Feel free to hit up my inbox if you're interested in knowing more!

Traits

Dragon Fanatic. The dragonsoul has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. While the dragonsoul can see a dragon or higher-ranking Cult of the Dragon cultist friendly to it, the dragonsoul ignores the effects of being charmed or frightened.

Fanatic Advantage. Once per turn, if the dragonsoul makes a weapon attack with advantage on the attack roll and hits, the target takes an extra 10 (3d6) damage.

Limited Flight. The dragonsoul can use a bonus action to gain a flying speed of 30 feet until the end of its turn.

Pack Tactics. The dragonsoul has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the dragonsoul's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Actions

Multiattack. The Dragonsoul attacks twice with its shortsword.

Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) damage of the type to which the dragonsoul has resistance.

Orb of Dragon's Breath (3/Day). Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 90 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (6d8) damage of the type to which the dragonsoul has damage resistance.

So I’ve decided to rewrite the script of DragonSoul. I’ve learned a lot about how to structure a story since I wrote it back in 2022 and I wanna give it a do-over. I’m also going to try and create a complete chronology of the MephistoVerse, which means writing a timeline for roughly two centuries worth of history for a fictional cosmos, yayyyy!

All things considered, as far as villains go…. all the guy really wants is his own freedom and maybe? Ruling Solstheim (not that there’s even a whole lot to rule). The latter is pretty unclear too, and I feel like he’d realize there’s nothing much there anymore the moment he’s out.

The mind controlling was out of sheer desperation after being trapped in book hell for four thousand years. Of course he would do anything possible to get out of out of Apocrypha.

Compared to Skyrim’s other main villains…. He doesn’t even feel like he was written as a villain

For a book that I hope someday to write (when I'm done with the one I'm still reworking.) This was inspired by the original credits sequence for Fullmetal Alchemist (the 2003 anime) and the song Kesenai Tsumi. It's also an A3 drawing that I've been working on since June, on and off. The paper has smudged horribly and I've doctored it a bit to enhance my creative intent for it. But it's still 99% traditional.

I’ve just remembered that when I was playing NWN, I was considering making Camus (like, in my lore for him, separate from the game) able to enchant his arrows with elemental magic. I imagined he grew up among the elven side of his family and so naturally learned how to use a longbow (screw that mage-types can apparently only use crossbows), and then he’s a sorcerer, not a wizard, so I figured he might experiment with imbuing them with spells and even be successful with some of them. But then I learned that that already exists, and they’re called arcane archers. Which is a prestige class, which I suppose are NWN’s version of specializations/subclasses, and he’s already a red dragon disciple. So per D&D rules, he can’t do that.

But it wouldn’t actually be unrealistic for him to be able to do that in a real-world context, would it. I know doing whatever you want is in the spirit of homebrew, but also the rules exist for a reason… Hrrrng

It was a peaceful morning in Dirge Valley, the first after many years of turmoil. The dragonfolk of Jorvik had finally reached their safe haven, their holy land. Ulysses, his emerald skin glistening in the morning sun, emerged from the pristine river in which he bathed and shook the crystal water from his wings.

Ulysses’ mate, a crimson dragon named Achilles, rested in the shade of a willow tree, his purple eyes gazing into the middle distance. A faint smile was on his lips, indicating that he was in a state of deep meditation. His soulstone - the sacred gem implanted in his forehead that all dragons received once they came of age - glowed softly. Achilles was entering a state of slight enlightenment.

Curious as he was, Ulysses knew better than to disturb him. He had yet to master the art of Farsight, although he had experienced a brief trance-like state accompanied by a premonition. Achilles would only remain in this state for as long as he needed to. Awakening him before his time would pose a risk to his life.

With a contented sigh, the green dragon climbed onto the bank, where his jewellery rested upon a large, flat stone. Bracelets, necklaces, tail-rings, horn-rings and bangles, all symbols of Ulysses’ moral values and status among dragonkind. As he fitted them on, he heard Achilles utter a loud gasp as if he had been holding his breath underwater.

“Achilles! My love, are you alright?” Ulysses bounded to his side. “What did you see?” Achilles shivered and swished his tail uneasily. “Ulysses, we must find Pendragon Hala,” he said, a little breathlessly. “There is no time to be lost!”
