My Archive Of Our Own Wrap-up

I wanted to put together a thank you to all the fanfic writers who have gotten me through this year.

This wrap-up is me going through my history month by month to see which fics I'd visited the most (because you can be damn sure I read through them over several days).

So this is a celebration of the wide variety of fics I've read and/or bookmarked and/or subscribed to. Thank you to every writer on this list for keeping me entertained.

My first fic of 2023: Finding the Balance, by Amberlioness

Summary:

Events following ‘Bound’, leading up to ‘Demons’. Trip and T’Pol begin to explore what their bond means and how it affects them. Follows “Beginning in Earnest”. I’ve tried to keep as close to canon as possible, while filling in events and back story as the muse commands.

Star Wars Rebels, rated T. Completed 2023-03-29.

The Force wasn’t the only great power in the Galaxy. There were also the laws of physics. Kanan was strong in the Force, but the bind he had gotten himself into had to do with physics. (My inevitable “Kanan lives” story. He survives, and the story unfolds from there. Some of it resembles the story we already know, and some of it doesn’t. The ripples travel out.) Update: Chapter 1-8 is a complete story, you can stop reading there and get some nice closure. After that, I’m just kind of adding as I get ideas. Mostly I just like seeing Kanan get to be a dad so that’s what I’m doing. Thanks!

February

Synced To You, by TuppingLiberty

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, rated E. Completed 2017-04-09.

Canonverse but Omegaverse: Though everyone can choose whomever they want as mate, your one true mate, the mate with which you 'sync', is your one best match in the entire galaxy. Poe recognizes Finn as his sync-mate immediately, but Finn is reluctant - extremely. Chapter 3 and various chapters thereon are explicit. This fic is now in epilogue-mode. Everything after Chapter 13 is epilogue. I will come back to it as it pleases me, which, right now, is often. :D

Final Fantasy XV, rated T. Last updated 2022-08-04.

Out on a mission, Cor Leonis finds a teenager, lost and sick and partway to becoming an MT. Against the advice of all and sundry, he brings him back to Insomnia. There's not a lot of love lost for MTs in the Citadel, but some of its inhabitants may still be young enough to put aside their prejudices.

After Michael is shot in the street, his friends and family can all agree that it was an act of retaliation. However, none of them can agree on who pulled the trigger.

Bookmark note: The one where Jerry White is a piece of shit and also Trevor, Michael and Franklin have to deal with white supremesists. I don't think that's how supremesists is spelled. Lemme look into that.

Over And Over, by Nightwinging_it

Borderlands, rated M. Completed 2020-12-17.

Timothy Lawrence has resigned himself to his fate as Handsome Jack's property, even if it means losing himself. When an attempt by a friend to rescue him lands him in trouble with Jack, Timothy is banished to the casino as punishment. Angry and betrayed, Timothy is all too eager to seize the chance to escape, even if it comes in the form of a brash Operative. When Zane Flynt is hired to steal weapon schematics from Hyperion, he finds himself needing the help of Handsome Jack's Eridium addicted doppelganger. It's supposed to be a simple job, and he and the doppelganger will part ways the moment it's over. Only Zane didn't expect to get so damn attached to Timothy. (OR: Zane accidentally adopts Timothy, and chaos ensues)

Bookmark note: The one where Timothy's made to be hooked on eridium and Zane basically nurses him back to life.

9-1-1 Lone Star, rated E. Last updated 2022-08-08.

TK Strand’s life has been filled with pain and rejection. His parents, extreme traditionalists, hate him for being a male omega and have kept him isolated for most of his life. When he finds out that he is going to be bonded to an alpha named Carlos in his Uncle Owen’s pack, he doesn’t know what to expect. Years of enduring verbal and physical abuse from his parents have left him withdrawn and wary of his new mate. Carlos is determined to get the omega to trust him, but TK’s scars run deep and old habits are hard to break. Can Carlos and the 126 help TK overcome his past and embrace his future?

After all the shite they'd been through together, Zane doesn't quite know what to think of them. Amara might have an idea. [Shameless and massive Zane-centric fic]

Bookmark note: The one where Amara and Zane have a friends with benefits thing that accidentally falls into something more serious but then shit goes a little wrong and there's a few chapters where they're fucking dumb but it's okay because they eventually work it out.

Johanssen suggests that Beck sleep in her bunk since it's closest to the med bay and Watney. This goes exactly as well as you would expect.

Vex knew her father hated them. It had been obvious when he left their mother alone to raise a pair of twins by herself. But she had never imagined he would hate them enough to stick them in foster care only a few months after losing her. Now Vex is scraping by on the streets, using her artistic talent to make enough for her and her dog to eat, searching for the twin brother who had been taken away from her because of the system. She didn't realize that when her search took her to Emon, the bustling city held both promises for the future and ghosts from the past.

The Asylum Where They Raised Me

“Is it always like this?” Vax asked the princess, who had all but collapsed against the railing when they stepped out onto the balcony. 

It was their first official appearance at a Ball as a engaged couple outside of Zephrah. Keyleth had been excited earlier in the day, flitting about and fussing with her gown and her tiara (things she normally didn't worry too much about, but she was worried about making sure everything went perfectly), chatting a mile a minute, and helping Vax remember all the names of the people they could bump into. 

Keyleth dragged her eyes up to meet his. Her face was flushed, but not from embarrassment or even the cold, just pure irritation. “Yes, it's always like this. It's terrible.” It was loud and people asked too many questions, people were looking at her, at them, and she hated it.

Vax stepped closer to her, taking note that they were still in clear view of the other party goers and unlike Keyleth’s father, most had strong ideas of what constituted as proper. And strong ideas about a princess courting a bastard. He didn't want to risk making Keyleth’s life any harder for doing anything deemed untoward by a nosy Nelly.

“Usually after the formalities, if he was invited, Percy and I would hide in the corner and everyone would leave us alone for the most part.” Keyleth continued, turning around so she could look over the forest and stars. Her hands held onto the railing. “But I guess I can't do that anymore.”

The de Rolos had not received an invitation to this particular Ball, and even if they had been, Percy was awfully busy doting on a rather heavily pregnant Vex in Whitestone. 

“Is this the first Ball you've been to without him?” Vax asked, his hand hesitating before settling on her forearm gently. The wind blew gently and sent the layers of Keyleth’s amber colored gown fluttering against his leg. 

Keyleth nodded. Percy was her dearest friend, her lifeline for the longest time. He was like her in all the ways many others didn't understand. She was safe when he was around. “Yes. Outside of Zephrah anyway. And now… now we're adults and I can't…” she took a shaky breath and tightened her grip on the railing. 

“Can't what, love?” Vax asked softly. 

“I can't do this!” Keyleth shouted suddenly. 

“Woah, woah, KiKi…” Vax said, stepping close enough to wrap his arms around her, not caring at all who might see. 

“No!” Keyleth yelled, writhing out of his grasp. Vax stumbled backwards, eyes wide, hands raised in front of him, palms toward Keyleth. “I can't do this, Vax! I can't do any of this! I feel like I'm going insane! I was raised for this life, to be a princess, and there's so many rules, especially now that I'm grown and… I'm in constant fear I'm going to do something wrong, upset my father, disgrace him, or something. I don't… it's so hard. And someday, I will be in charge of an entire kingdom and I can't do it!” 

“You can,” Vax said. “Keyleth, you can.” 

“I can't!” She shouted again, tears gathering in her eyes as the wind picked up around them. Clearly this had been festering for some time. “You wouldn't understand! You have no idea how different and wrong I am! You have no idea what it's like to be raised for a job you know won't be any good at. I shouldn't be a princess and I certainly shouldn't be anyone's queen.” 

“You're right, Keyleth,” Vax said gently. “You're right, I have no idea what it was like to grow up in a big castle all alone. I have no idea what it would be like to be raised to lead a kingdom someday. I won't pretend I have any idea what it's like, because that would be lying, and you know I never lie to you.” 

Vax could hear murmuring from the open door to the ballroom behind him, over Keyleth’s heavy breathing and the music still playing. He could only imagine what people were thinking; a crying, wild looking princess and her betrothed on a balcony, him looking for all the world like he was trying to calm a wild animal. He didn't care, not really. Keyleth meant more to him than nosy nobles, far more. And nosy, judgy nobles he did know a thing or two about. 

“I do know this, KiKi; I know that you are a kind, incredible, caring person. I know how capable you are. People can be terrible, my love, that I know as well. People will judge you for anything and anything you do. People will talk and gossip and complain about your ideas, your outfit, your dreams. But you're the strongest person I know. And you shouldn't care what others might think of you. You're perfect as you are.”  

The wind that had picked up around them slowed and Keyleth's lip trembled.

“You have to do what makes you happiest, what you believe in, and you will be a fantastic queen. I believe in you.” 

Keyleth threw herself into Vax's arms and he held her close, rubbing his hand up and down her back. She grabbed the back of his fancy jacket into her fists and cried into his shoulder. 

He didn't care who was looking when he pressed a kiss to her temple. “I've got you, my love. I've got you.”

My thoughts:

This year was the year I first ever decided to make fanfiction, all thanks to a person I follow who shared their many awesome and cool AUs and stories! I'm so glad I've been able to make some art for them and who'd known that they'd end up following me as well??! (hi) I've made new friends and people I'd reach out to talk to if only my social anxiety didn't get in the way. This journey has been a journey of many new experiences and explorations. Outside of the furry fandom this truly has been the most active I've ever been in a fandom and it's been so welcoming I can't thank you all enough! I hope to continue to write stories and aus that you all enjoy even if it takes me a while!

Our Ceiling is Your Floor, A Vesper de Rolo fic

Percy woke slowly from a dream, but it was one of those instances where he promptly forgot what the dream was. It left him feeling warm and peaceful though, so he knew it wasn't a nightmare. 

The light that filtered into the room told him it was still the middle of the night, but he couldn't place the time, and unlike some people, he did not have the ability to automatically know the time, and he couldn't really tell time by the moons even post-adventuring, especially since he couldn't see the moons as they were above the house, he had to check a clock. He went to roll over to grab his glasses and check the time, but he startled when he realized his arm was pinned to the bed by someone with long dark hair fanned out on the pillow. 

Even after traveling with Vox Machina, sleeping next to his friends on their adventures, even after being married, sometimes he forgot someone would be next to him when he woke up. Even knowing that Vex slept best when she was touching him in some way, sometimes her being there still startled him. 

Ever since they had started sharing a bed, Vex always had to be touching him. It started with her hand finding it's way to his wrist to feel his pulse or his chest to feel it rise and fall, so she knew he was alive. But it had progressed far beyond that, and Percy did not mind at all. She was the kind of person who curled up tight when she slept- a hold over from being a runway and having to keep warm and stay small, he'd guess. Her arms, if they weren't holding onto him in some way, were always tucked up to her chest or under her head and her legs were somehow twisted around each other. It was incredibly endearing. 

He flexed his fingers just to make sure she hadn't been cutting off his circulation, but instead of turning to look at the time, he just admired her. She was more important anyway. 

She looked so peaceful when she slept, so calm, like nothing bad had ever happened to her or near her. She looked so sweet and innocent and beautiful. But she was always beautiful.

The way the light from the window shined into the room made her almost appear to glow. It was ethereal. And he smiled. 

He adored her. He absolutely adored her. And he still couldn't believe this was his life, that she was his and he was hers. He had done nothing to deserve this, absolutely nothing, but she was here and she loved him and all his flaws and weirdness and it was more than he could have ever hoped for- a happy life, good friends, a wife, and a child. 

A child . 

Every time he thought about it, his heart fluttered. A child. 

Vex was expecting a baby. They were expecting a baby.
