“Previously the double bass was rarely used to play anything but quarter notes in ensemble or solos but by soloing on the bass more in a 'horn like' fashion, Blanton began sliding into eighth- and sixteenth-note runs, introducing melodic and harmonic ideas that were totally new to jazz bass playing.”

Olivia Newton-John Dies at 73
- “We have a lost a true Aussie legend,” Human Nature says
Olivia Newton-John has died at 73, the singer and actor’s husband said.
Newton-John died Aug. 8 at her home in California, John Easterling said in a statement.
“Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer,” he said.
Newton-John had a string of pop hits in the 1970s and ’80s including “Have You Ever Been Mellow” and “Physical.” She scored more from the soundtracks of her films “Grease” and “Xanadu,” the latter of which found her collaborating with Electric Light Orchestra.
“I’m so sorry to hear the news about Olivia Newton-John,” Cyndi Lauper tweeted. “She was such a nice person and a radiant bright light. She will be missed.”
Huffamoose drummer Erik Johnson tweeted a photo of a Newton-John album cover that rested in his grade-school record collection.
“KISS, the Who, Duke Ellington, Aerosmith and this,” he said. “R.I.P.”
Although she called California home, Newton-John never forgot her Australian homeland and championed home-grown artists such as the band Human Nature, who mourned “our beautiful friend” on social media.
“Olivia was not only an incredible artist, but one of the most humble and kindest people we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and calling our friend,” the group said.
“We have a lost a true Aussie legend.”

There are a couple of musicians that basically made their careers out of covering other people's songs in a way. True, Brian Setzer – you noticed I'm talking about him thanks to you checking the link – doesn't really seem to be in the vein I mentioned, but his opus remains a case study of someone who looks up to the past to do his own thing. Of course, this also means he does occasionally present the fact by establishing his own version of the tunes that gave him a few pointers on his own career. His swing revival Orchestra found him tackling many of these old songs, where he and his crew shine as a fine collection of players for these tunes, he doesn't stuff them in the mothballs like some similar to him do, he gives them the energy they need.

Today In History
Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, legendary composer and bandleader, was born in Washington, DC, on this date April 29, 1899.
Duke was one of the most important creative forces in the music of the twentieth century. His influence on classical music, popular music, and, of course, jazz, simply cannot be overstated.
He is famous for his songs: “Take the A Train,” “Mood Indigo,” “It Don’t Mean A Thing,” and “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good” among others.
Duke gained a national profile through his orchestra’s appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. A master at writing miniatures for the three-minute 78 rpm recording format, Ellington wrote or collaborated on more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy, and many of his pieces have become standards.
Duke Ellington was commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp on this date in 1986.
