For everyone currently trying to learn Finnish on Duolingo -- if you're also despairing over the fact that duo just throws Stuff at you without explanation, fear no longer: the grammar (+ culture) lessons that used to be part of the course can still be found online, namely here!
Have fun and go forth and learn :D

These are my Duolingo stats for 2022.
Last year I started using flashcards again and it has improved my vocabulary immensely. I wish I had been using flashcards from the beginning. My vocabulary would be a lot bigger now. Probably double or more in size.
I put flashcards up all around the house. I put them above the sink in the kitchen and the bathrooms. I have them clipped in piles on the dining table and next to the couch. I also have them in the bedroom to look at before I go to sleep.
My main target language is Korean, but last year I started learning Finnish. I have no reason to learn Finnish, but I love it so much! It is such a fun language and the grammar is so close to English that you end up learning it faster than other languages.
I speak it to my dog sometimes and he seems to understand. He likes it. 😆
I found a library book at the digital library that lists only Korean translated to Finnish vocabulary words. So, I made flashcards where I can learn both languages at the same time. I heard that it’s better to learn more than one language at one time, so this works out great for me.

re: Duolingo using AI and people choosing to stop using it but feeling lost as to how to access language learning
One alternative app you might look into is MangoLanguages -- it's often free through your local public library! Try going to get a library card and checking if they have it as an online resource. If you can't get access for free through the public library, you can pay a few bucks a month (actually might be like $10? I'd have to double check).
(And yes, MangoLangs has Finnish!)

Yo if anyone's going to Käärijä's Backas gig in Vantaa I'll bring some 2023 stickers so you can get them if you want. But you will have to talk first because I'm very shy 👉👈

So I decided to look up historical data on the amount of Finnish learners on Duolingo. I used the Wayback Machine but for some reason since the start of this year, the page doesn't load correctly so I have very limited data for 2023.
If we count the amount of new learners in 2022 every 2 months, it's about 15-25 thousand. But this changed at the start of 2023. Between December 2022 and February 2023 there were 43 thousand new learners, coinciding with the release of Cha Cha Cha in January.
And the growth didn't stop there. 3 months later and the Finnish language added 63 thousand new learners (the average last year for the same time frame was about 30 thousand).
Also, the total learners went up 100 thousand in just 5 months (December 2022 with 663K - May 2023 with 769K) compared to last year which happened over a 9-month period (March 2022 with 560K - December 2022 with 663K).
Conclusion: Cha Cha Cha did have an influence on the amount of people learning Finnish on Duolingo and I predict it's going to be even bigger in the weeks to come.
Fun fact: Yesterday I checked the website and Finnish had 767 thousand learners, so in just one day it went up by 2 thousand!

So, Duolingo has failed me. I’ve “completed” the Finnish course. This… is not what knowing a language looks like.
I have a tiny vocabulary. I do not understand grammar. I can’t reliably understand anything besides basic concepts.
But damned if I can’t say “minulla on helmi.” Or “tämä laulu soi kuin hirvi.”
