Why Use Link Shorteners? And Which One?
I used bit.ly as my link shortener for years. It was essential on Twitter in the old days, because shorter links left more room in a 140-character tweet to say something about the link. It was also really helpful because bit.ly kept analytics on each link, so you could see how many clicks each link had per hour for the previous day, and per day before that. This made it easy to gauge how well people were interacting with your links.
About three years ago, they removed this capability. I guess they had baited me for a few years to get me hooked, then switched the more useful capabilities to a paid service, which is hideously expensive today. I complained, but never even got a response. With that feature gone, I quit using them. To top it off, Twitter now charges you 23 characters per link, no matter how long the URL is, so there’s no incentive for shortening a link.
Yesterday, I came across the one remaining reason I could think of to use a link shortener: I had to send out a proposal, and have had really spotty luck getting links in a PDF file to work. They work for some people and not for others. And if the recipient prints the proposal for colleagues, there’s obviously no chance for a link on paper to work. So I need shortened links, because here’s the difference it can make:

Click the links and you’ll see that they take you to the same page. There’s a chance that someone with a printed version of the proposal might key in the shortened link; there’s virtually no chance they would key in the long one. Even if they did, there’s a good chance they’d have a typo because most of the text is gobbledygook.
Actually, I’m cheating a bit, as the only URL visible on the proposal is in this sentence at the bottom of each page: Weblinks are live at: bit.ly/SteveMouzon. All other links on the page (including the book link above) are embedded in the text of the proposal.
But that presented another problem: When I moved from iWeb to Sandvox several years ago, that altered all of the URLs on all of my sites because Sandvox has a different (and cleaner) URL system than iWeb did. This means that old links to my sites have been broken for several years. And bit.ly/SteveMouzon is a page on a site I’m about to take down. So I went to bit.ly to see if I could update the URL. No dice. bit.ly apparently decided to make URL alteration a feature you have to pay for, and their pro accounts are hundreds of dollars per month. Obviously, I had to find another link shortener.
I did some research and settled on Rebrandly, which allows you to update URLs. They also have several ways of working with your links. You can search by text, sort by date, most clicked, alphabetical, and alphabetical backwards. It’s also free. Yes, there’s a paid version ($49.95/month), and to get the kind of analytics bit.ly once did, I’d have to have that, but it’s not worth it to me. Look, I get it... companies have to make money, and pretty much everyone now has a teaser account that’s free and a feature-laden pro account. I have pro accounts with some sites, but this is too much for my needs, so I’ve given up on the analytics beyond a simple click count.
There’s one more cool thing you might have noticed above: the mouz.one domain. “Branded link shorteners” are a thing now. I was hoping that the .on extension exists, but it doesn’t yet... but mouz.one is pretty good. Rebrandly registered the domain for me for $12/year, and it was operational in about 30 minutes.
One more thing: When I used bit.ly, I would use whatever gobbledygook they came up with for the link. But Rebrandly makes it so easy to customize the link that I’m going to do it with every link I shorten. Here’s why: If I want to link to the Original Green book on Amazon, I have to go to Amazon and copy the link because it’s a long one like for the durability book above. But the shortened link is mouz.one/OGbook, which I can remember, so it saves me time, even if I’m embedding the link within anchor text, as I usually do.
Much like podcasts, which seemed in danger of fading away several years ago only to make a comeback, I’d suggest that link shorteners just might do the same. What do you think?
