Speedy Ortiz process trauma in rather colourfully campy fashion in their new video for ‘Plus One.’
Unfolding in glorious B-movie kitsch, the Massachusetts quartet causes quite a bit of chaos with tangled melodies, explosive drumwork and snarky repartee (‘Go on without me now, a tattoo on your lip/Sucker punched to pucker up, can't forget the swelling’) as a big fluffy bun-bun attacks the city, resulting in kind of a bummer ending...
Explains Sadie Dupuis about the inspirations behind the track and video (via Stereogum):
‘I love touring, but the workaholism it encourages has been a convenient way to repress my feelings. In the pandemic, I found myself ruminating on my estrangement from an abusive family member. I’ve used my songwriting to process other experiences of violence, but had not broached these memories until Rabbit Rabbit. Being able to work on old trauma in therapy and in my writing has helped my boundaries elsewhere, and taught me to move on from exploitative relationships.
That’s what “Plus One” is about, and it came out pretty quickly as a sad acoustic waltz. I was sitting on the floor of an empty living room, mid-move, and the bare surroundings added a liminal starkness, though some of the imagery is inspired by scenes from West Philly that summer. When I went back to do pre-production, Texan post-hardcore was in my head, so I tried to channel At the Drive-In and Trail of Dead, bands that inspired me as a teen.
We made the video with director Dylan Mars Greenberg, whose campiness and B-movie expertise was a perfect fit for the band’s also very campy videography. We’ve done a ton of horror homages but had never paid tribute to an old school monster movie. Dylan’s pet bunny Voodoo was a perfect Godzilla-sized star—a cuddly rabbit who’s mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.’
Speedy Ortiz’s upcoming album, Rabbit Rabbit, is out September 1 via Wax Nine. Read the review for their 2018 album Twerp Verse here. You can also read the review for Sad13’s 2020 album, Haunted Painting, here.

Along with that “Rolling Stone” interview came a new video for “Nevertheless” a song from the album “Thanks For Coming”.
It was shot in New York by director Dylan Mars Greenberg, who performed with their band “Theophobia” before a “Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum” gig in New York in 2019.
Here are some screenshots from the video. It´s a trip....very “Tron” like.

Took a taxi to Troma film studios today and did two separate scenes for producer/director Dylan Mars Greenberg’s epic film “Spirit Riser” including motorbike scene and after that a few scenes (after climbing the ladder to the roof) and fighting off (no spoiler!) very bad things, with Lloyd’s help. A lovely sunny day for filming! Nice breeze!

EVIL EVERYWHERE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Wild Eye Releasing
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  In 1985, Elkridge, IL, an evil force awakens and slaughters the high school senior class, in alphabetical order, and their loved ones.. However, it was prevented from completing its deadly task thanks to Zeke Zanderfeldt. Two years later, 1987 for those not counting, its back and the only thing that stands in its way are three friends who band together against the demonic force that is claiming the young lives of the senior class. They quickly learn it is more complicated than they could have imagined and more evil they thought.
REVIEW: For those of you who might remember Marv Newland's 1969 animated short "Bambi Meets Godzilla," he used the credits to poke fun at the fact that the short was his sole creation. EVIL EVERYWHERE, coming in at 64 minutes, is clearly the spawn of Mykee Morettini (see the credits below). If you were to tell me that Morettini was a high school student who made this film with the support of his family and friends, I’d be like, cool, he has a passion, a lot to learn, and lets see where it takes him. However, if Morettiniis a college graduate or older this is a car crash. Everybody likes to slow down and take in a good car crash, Even at 64 minutes EVIL EVERYWHERE is a disappointing car crash.
Morettini painfully attempts to ape an 80’s film style, from the bad music, the cinematography, the costumes, and the filter to make it look like film. The film just looks and feels like the ninth level of filmmaker hell and is beyond home grown horror or a B movie. There were so many times my mind was screaming to turn it off… Life is too short to watch bad movies… as my hand kept reaching for the remote on its own. Still, I remained steadfast to see it through as it was only 64 minutes, and I’ve endured just as bad for longer.
There are maybe two decent actors in the film who are trying to work through a screenplay that feels like a rejected Scooby-Doo script, minus the dog, and so many more non-actors. Bad storytelling and bad dialogue is simply that much more horrendous with bad acting. It’s like an engine being started without any oil in the engine block. It makes this grinding noise that simply frays nerves and will eventually seize up, even if you only run it for 64 minutes.
There is a part of me that wants to be like, “Hey, good for you, you made a movie!” Then there is the side of me who if I ordered a meal and had to send it back twice because it wasn’t what I ordered or how I asked for it, you just have to speak up. No, this is not good, this is not palatable, and I just waste 64 minutes that I could have utilized doing something more productive elsewhere. EVIL EVERYWHERE is simply a film I would not have endured or accepted into any festival board I’ve served on. You’ve been warned, “What do ya want to watch that film for? It’s evil!”

LYRICS
Walking home from Far Rockaway
always felt like a million miles.
Followed the silhouette
of the train tracks under the moon;
oh, honey, I remember.
He came up from the East River,
golden clouds in his hair.
He dissolved on Delancey;
now his whereabouts are unknown.
He said,
"I'm easy to love,
but I'm hard to break;
I am easy to love,
but I'm hard to break.
If you ever break me,
I'll be broken awhile.
Oh, and when I return,
I will tear you apart."
The year is 1996;
Maria's reading the newspaper.
Sips a coffee, fresh out of the pot,
and her world is on fire.
I am out of my body;
you are on a motorbike.
We're in hiding on that stairway again;
two boys from Brooklyn,
lost in something way over our heads.
You said,
"I'm easy to love,
but I'm hard to break;
I am easy to love,
but I'm hard to break.
If you ever break me,
I'll be broken awhile.
Oh, and when I return,
I will tear you apart."

Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum - Nevertheless (directed by Dylan Mars Greenberg)
“The band connected with AltPress to detail the new visual as well as their broader plans for the future.
Can you tell our readers about the video?
KATZ-BOHEN: I think we’re all terrified of that actually happening in real life, so this is where we deal with our fears. [Laughs.]
HALL: I think we owe a lot, if not everything, to Dylan, who came up with the concept for and directed the video. They shared with us their take, and we just said, “Yeah, run with it. We’ll show up and be your guinea pigs,” basically. But it felt like Dylan had an intuitive sense of what the song was about or how it felt. The visual landscape of it felt in sync with how the song, at least to me, feels.”

My song “Don’t Give Up On The Feeling” from my solo album Demo Graphic is in the new Troma films Valentine’s Babes promo! Thanks to Lloyd Kaufman (producer) with Michael Hertz and Dylan Mars Greenberg (director) for including me in the Troma film family. I’ve been a fan since their film “Tromeo and Juilet” which my son gave to me as a gift on VHS a long time ago when he was interning at Troma in his late teens.
