My goodness that last question. They were so brave. That was a really great question to end the panel on.

“How does it feel to be role models for little kids that are LGBTQ, like baby gays like me and stuff like that?”

And you could tell Dom really resonated with them.

That’s why they were the first person to respond and try and comfort them. Calm their nerves by telling everyone to appreciate their bravery and their outfit. That must have meant so much to them considering they felt that way in themselves. Dom totally got it and they were totally right. How do you answer a question like that when there’s so much gratitude you feel in it. In how it feels. No words ever could possibly do justice to how it must feel to someone like Dom. Who hadn’t even come out themselves at that point so must have been incredibly inspired to see that little kid say that.

I love Dom’s answer. The honesty and simplicity of repeating “It feels amazing.” And then how they immediately make an effort to appreciate them and thanking them for asking the question. Incredible.

DOM: “It feels amazing. It feels amazing. Thank you for coming here and having the courage to stand up and be unapologetically who you are. ‘Cause you’re wicked and you have amazing style. Literally. Can we all just appreciate the outfit? It’s so cool! And your glasses. And your hair. And you’re just rocking it. You’re absolutely rocking it. So you’re a massive inspiration to us as well, I would say. And it’s a really hard question to answer because how does it feel? It feels amazing. It feels amazing. Thank you so much.”

Because what else could they say? How could they ever convey how they felt in that moment in words? How could anyone going through the journey in their sexuality and gender identity Dom was at the time?

I need to watch every single one of these convention panels because they’re all just so rich in authenticity. The answers given. Especially by Dom. I can feel their anxiety just watching them speak. It’s overwhelming. I really do feel so sorry for Dom that they felt so guilty about not having the bravery to be unapologetically who they are like they tell this kid. That one really hit them. I can imagine that was the catalyst for them in coming out as queer themselves. That great big push. They probably thought “Well, if a little kid can do it, what’s stopping me?” But of course, it doesn’t work like that. Everybody is on different journeys in their own sexualities/gender identities. At different times and with different circumstances. There’s no shame because they’re incredibly personal experiences and no one should put any pressure on themselves or feel any obligation to come out when they’re not ready to.

God I just want to reach into the screen and hug Dom. Let them cry into my shoulder or something. Just be there for them in that moment. Probably what they wanted to do with this brave little kid in that moment. Nothing in this world can comfort better than touch. No words said can ever compare to human contact. And I’m sure that’s exactly what they did afterwards because that kid really needed it. And so did Dom.

Emerald City Comic Con 2024. It's Great To Be Back!

There's lots to do at this year's Emerald City Comic Con. Despite some repeat guests and lack of industry exhibitors, it was still a great time! #ECCC #fandom #pacificnorthwest #convention report at:

Emerald City Comic Con certainly exploded in size since 2019. Instead of occupying one building and a quarter during the time I last attended, it’s a full building and a half! I’ve heard stories about last year’s and am glad I didn’t go. Folks had problems navigating around and getting used to the new space. And although the pandemic caused this event to lose momentum back in 2020, it continued…
