favs from all my fandoms (new and old)
some of my favs from each fandom ive been in like ever
Tumblr media
genshin impact: my fav of all time kaeya alberich i love him Very Much So, hes just one of those characters who its like. UGH. where he just wants to be sweet but cant let himself get too comfortable where he is (literally in his case). i also relate to him irt my relationship with my family/sibling. hes just constantly aware of other people both to be cautious and to know the people he cares about more, hes been shown canonically to pay close attention and provide gifts that he knew people wanted
Tumblr media
runner up is ZHONGLI i related to him very much but i fogrgt why rn lol
Tumblr media
kingdom hearts: xion, not for very long but right around when i was finally actualizing my gender identity (id previously been very agender/masc) i rlly took to xion for like. Gender Inspo. i felt like even tho she got the short end of the stick she did her damndest to forge her own identity (roxas got his whole game and arc about it while xion bascially got fridged but its fine). when i finally let myself consider who i would be as a fem person, i pictured her :D
Tumblr media
one piece: sanji!! i already sorta liked him (okay maybe not in fishman island or thriller bark. that was. shit.) before heading into whole cake but. lord almighty. lemme tell ya i dont cry very easily over anime but whole cake took me OUT. sanji just tries so hard to be someone who doesnt cause the problems, hes cringe fail but he tries so hard to just be ALLOWED to exist bc hes fought so hard to believe he SHOULD uugggghhhhhhhhhhh. irt the straw hats i think he has some of the most unique and fleshed out philosophies (not wasting food) that his backstory perfectly contextualizes. also im on board with trans fem sanji
Tumblr media
runner up is YAMATO he is so beautiful AND hes a kinnie whats not to love im just mad hes not in the straw hats (yet)
Tumblr media
total drama: svetlana this was legit the only gif i could find of her on here. i dont need to explain myself svetlana sweep 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️
Tumblr media
jjba: doppio/diavolo its FINE it COUNTS but technically 90% just doppio..... back in 2021(?) i dyed my hair like diavolo (pink with green spots) i feel like thats. all i need to say
Tumblr media
ace attorney: to the surprise of absolutely no one THE PHANTOM ive just always attached to the whole. Not Being thing. in the past i struggled rlly hard with depersonalization/derealization/dissociation/basically every manifestation of the phantom, so id connect to them (which i dont think helped lol). nowadays, i focus rlly hard on the idea of the phantoms semi-redemption bc its like... being a person not being a required prerequisite to existing/being in society if that makes sense???? its complicated and probably only makes sense to me :P
Tumblr media
runner up is obviously UENDO+ i love them all tell no one but i think kisegawa is my fav i wish she got more lines i actually only watched soj for them bc at the time everyone said the game was literal ass
(dw athena is in close third place shes literally my daughter)
Tumblr media
rvb: if you asked me while i was a fan id probably say agent maine but in retrospect grif was clearly my fav, especially later in the show when he was one of the few leads who had a genuine character arc. he feels the most like a real person idk man
Tumblr media
silent hill: every fucking gif of henry is him busting his ass thats all that needs be said
Tumblr media
danganronpa: i changed favs very often bc i had zero idea what constituted well written characters lmao i have ~eclectic tastes~ but the main character i rlly liked was touko/syo, her arc in despair sisters afairc was decently well done and her relationship with komaru was sweet, even if dr is kinda an inescapable grease fire. in hindsight, i think i also related more to her than i realized bc of her self esteem and the way her trauma/phobias seemingly blocked her from basic self care/socialization but it was really more about her never having the courage to push her own boundaries (idk how well thats shown in the game but that was my experience)
Tumblr media
runner up: korekiyo bc i liked him a lot for longer than most othr characters but afairc my perception of him was VERY heavily based on headcanons/fanon so i doubt id like him at all on a replay. best guess is id only maybe like shuichi or something. pretty much everyone in dr is an asshole tbh i cannot emphasize enough how ass my taste used to be my ability to pick characters i like boiled down to someone telling me a character was cool and i immedaitely absorbed them
Tumblr media
pjo: okay so this bitch is in a book so ofc theres no gif for him but jason grace is the funniest motherfucker on the earth. half the time id say something out loud while reading and hed immediately say that exact thing. absolutely exquisite. bro had no idea what the fuck anyone was saying half the time
Tumblr media
twst: i started playing for ruggie but immediately deuce also proved to be the funniest motherfucker ever i dont think ive ever seen his gimmick in anything else its so fucking funny i live for characters who seem like the straight man but then turn out to be equally as batshit as their peers (i stopped playing bc i had been misinformed and thought this was a college but these are HIGH SCHOOLERS why am i being isekaid into HIGH SCHOOL WTF)
now for some misc favs bc theres not really a fandom for them per se
Tumblr media
i love him and he is me
Tumblr media
oh my god and i found a gif of my favorite scene i love steven i also want to . attack him sometimes

Hello lovely sardine cans !!
Tumblr media
things you WILL see on this blog -
Mainly my fanart. All posts will be art/art related, sfw, and English. Some will go into far too much detail on my design choices. A decent amount of what I draw is ship art and/or queer in some way
things you WON'T see on this blog -
Miscellaneous thoughts, reblogs, nsfw
If you want a blog of mine with two of those things, go to @eviljnonsense . I wouldn't recommend it, but it's there if you want to lurk
how to refer to me -
Jul(ien), DS, Quasar, QR, Quince, barcode, Andre, Gale
Nicknames more than welcome! Call me whatever silly names you like, I love that stuff
You have two good ol' classic options in the form of he/him and they/them.
boundaries -
Don't ask for photos of me, where I live, personal irl info like that.
dni is noone atm
socials -
Most of em should be on my strawpage, but if I ever take it down, my handle in most places is qwertzze. Including discord! DMs are almost always open there, so feel free to reach out
commissions -
I have just one Etsy listing right now for minimum wage ($15)! I'll do full body/flat color for the aforementioned price
answering asks/free art -
Art as a result of an ask won't be the same quality as commissions unless it's an idea I really like.
As for asks that are just questions, not art related, I'd recommend going over to my other blog and asking there. It'll be answered quicker !
fandoms -
The last few years, it's been mainly HLVRAI, with occasional stints into other things
Currently - Object Shows
[fandom list]
dms -
Always open. Vent to me, ramble about your OCs, use me as a notes app..... whatever.
I'd recommend DMing me on Discord more so because that's just the platform I'm used to, but anything is fine. Don't expect too much in response. You'll either get a nervous ramble or a reply that's a few words if I'm too tired
(post originally written 6/7/24 - draft)
(updated 6/7/24 - about request vs. comms, fandom list, fun facts deleted)
(updated 6/10/24 - added [3] tags, posted draft)
(updated 6/16/24 - added tissues gif, replaced it with sketch, replaced that with simplified logo-ish thing, added WILLs and WON'Ts)
(updated 7/5/24 edited fandoms link)
(updated 7/7/24 removed two WONTs, added DM info, added two tags, added to asks portion)
(updated 7/12/24 added/clarified commissions section in reaction to the listing itself changing)
(updated 9/26/24 removed "hello my lovely sardine cans)

tagged by @hua-fei-hua! it’s been ages since I’ve done one of these it was kind of fun lol! sorry for the delayed answers...
1. are you named after anyone?
a couple of ppl assume my name is kiri because it’s like, referencing kirishima from bnha. i haven’t kept up with bnha properly since. honestly since the dabi reveal ch dropped so that’s… nov 5th 2020 lol. I’ve got residual feelings abt it but not much interest in actually reading it (sorry). nowadays I don’t get as much of that anymore—my name is just like. digimon dusk only lets your character have a 4 character name max so I hit various syllables together and keysmashed until it sounded good. im attached to it now.
2. when was the last time you cried?
…today lol. i cry easy when i'm frustrated.
3. do you have kids?
no. I have a Feeling this will be rather unrelatable to whoever I tag so. electing to present my own question:
3 (again). [FREE SPACE] recommend a song?
im gonna recommend Tsuru (en: Bowstring) by koyori / denbolP bc it’s great. I love this producer actually.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
mm I think im probably averagely sarcastic but like. I do have a habit of like. ex: someone will be like oh where’s [kiri]? when I’m literally right there and I have the immediate impulse to say, completely straightfaced, like “oh [kiri]? sorry they’ve been dead for seven years. they’ve never been in this room in your entire life.” so essentially I like doubling down on things when I think it’s funny.
5. what sports do you play/have played
i played basketball for six years!
6. what's the first thing you notice about people?
i think the first like, physical detail I pay proper Attention to is earrings. just cause I like em. apart from that it’s probably their voice and what they find funny.
7. eye color?
brown. comparatively I think it’s rather dark to the point of looking black.
8. scary movies or happy endings?
i mean I feel like this is a. false dichotomy but I really don’t have a good stomach for horror and stuff so. happy endings ig.
9. any special talents?
talents… I’ve memorized my squares up to 30-ish, so like if for example if someone says 28 I can rattle off 784. I’ve been told I have a talent for talking abt media I like but that’s also something said by my lovely friends lol.
10. where were you born?
on earth. im also electing to replace this with my own question:
10 (again). what made you make a tumblr account?
if ppl look at my blog they shall think I showed up in 2020 but I’ve actually been here since 2015. I just… deactivated my acct by accident when I meant to delete a sideblog. ok. so obviously I remade in that case. I made one back in 2015, though, because I was like, really into hxh and ran into some hxh blogs I was like. in love with. also some fairy tail fic authors I rly respected were on here. and I wanted to discuss hxh and post fic. so I joined.
11. what are your hobbies?
writing! and reading! and drawing! and playlist making. im basic. writing is probably #1 to me tho I rly enjoy it. like for all I complain about it I actually really enjoy the act of like putting down words and crafting stuff and editing. I’d actually love to beta fic more regularly. and get reallllly good at grammar (seriously if anyone has any resources on that chuck it at me) and action scenes. those r my big two dreams.
12. do you have any pets?
nope! i do have a depressing amount of wips I have not taken care of, tho…
13. how tall are you?
5’2” or about 158 cm, i haven't measured myself lately. I’ve been told my various sources that I have “tall person energy” tho. im not as good abt it nowadays but I tend to be a bit careful abt keeping my back straight. at the very least I’m pretty aware of it. I wanna say it was just cool of me to be that way bc I was into having good posture but I’m like 90% sure it was because I read skip beat and I really liked that kyoko stood that way.
14. favorite subject in school?
math by farrrr. literature is dependent on the teacher for quality imo and while I enjoyed it I was always a bit sad that we never did any creative writing. math is just very nicely methodical.
15. dream job?
honestly I don’t have one. like I’d love to publish a book some day but I don’t want it to be my Job. im pretty satisfied just doing smthing productive-feeling and where I have enough free time tbh.
no obligation to answer ofc to anyone tagged. also if you don’t want to answer any of the questions just reject them... I just provided alternates bc I felt like it. i think this is supposed to be 15 questions for 15 mutuals but i dont want to tag that many people... @icharchivist @sunnnfish @dirtbra1n @mxddyhero @heartsdash @watcher-ofthe-sky @estradasphere

How to Edit an Over-Length Story Down to a Specific Word Count
One of the most wonderful things about writing as a hobby is that you never have to worry about the length of your story. You can be as self-indulgent as you want, make your prose the royalist of purples, include every single side story and extra thought that strikes your fancy. It’s your story, with no limits, and you can proceed with it as you wish.
When transitioning from casual writing to a more professional writing milieu, this changes. If you want to publish, odds are, you’ll need to write to a word count. If a flash fiction serial says, “1,000 words or less,” your story can’t be 1,025 and still qualify. If a website says, “we accept novellas ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 words,” your story will need to fall into that window. Even when you consider novel-length works, stories are expected to be a certain word count to fit neatly into specific genres - romance is usually around 80,000 words, young adult usually 50,000 to 80,000, debut novels usually have to be 100,000 words or less regardless of genre, etc. If you self-publish or work with a small press, you may be able to get away with breaking these “rules,” but it’s still worthwhile to learn to read your own writing critically with length in mind and learn to recognize what you do and do not need to make your story work - and then, if length isn’t an issue in your publishing setting, you can always decide after figuring out what’s non-essential to just keep everything anyway.
If you’re writing for fun? You literally never have to worry about your word count (well, except for sometimes in specific challenges that have minimum and/or maximum word counts), and as such, this post is probably not for you.
But, if you’re used to writing in the “throw in everything and the kitchen sink” way that’s common in fandom fanfiction circles, and you’re trying to transition only to be suddenly confronted with the reality that you’ve written 6,000 words for a short story project with a maximum word count of 5,000...well, we at Duck Prints Press have been there, we are in fact there right now, as we finish our stories for our upcoming anthology Add Magic to Taste and many of us wrote first drafts that were well over the maximum word count.
So, based on our experiences, here are our suggestions on approaches to help your story shorter...without losing the story you wanted to tell!
Cut weasel words (we wrote a whole post to help you learn how to do that!) such as unnecessary adverbs and adjectives, the “was ~ing” sentence structure, redundant time words such as “a moment later,” and many others.
When reviewing dialog, keep an eye out for “uh,” “er,” “I mean,” “well,” and other casual extra words. A small amount of that kind of language usage can make dialog more realistic, but a little goes a long way, and often a fair number of words can be removed by cutting these words, without negatively impacting your story at all.
Active voice almost always uses fewer words than passive voice, so try to use active voice more (but don’t forget that passive voice is important for varying up your sentence structures and keeping your story interesting, so don’t only write in active voice!).
Look for places where you can replace phrases with single words that mean the same thing. You can often save a lot of words by switching out phrases like “come back” for “return” and seeking out other places where one word can do the work of many.
Cut sentences that add atmosphere but don't forward the plot or grow your characters. (Obviously, use your judgement. Don't cut ALL the flavor, but start by going - I’ve got two sentences that are mostly flavor text - which adds more? And then delete the other, or combine them into one shorter sentence.)
Remove superfluous dialog tags. If it’s clear who’s talking, especially if it’s a conversation between only two people, you can cut all the he saids, she saids.
Look for places where you've written repetitively - at the most basic level, “ ‘hahaha,’ he laughed,” is an example, but repetition is often more subtle, like instances where you give information in once sentence, and then rephrase part or all of that sentence in the next one - it’s better to poke at the two sentences until you think of an effective, and more concise, way to make them into only one sentence. This also goes for scenes - if you’ve got two scenes that tend towards accomplishing the same plot-related goal, consider combining them into one scene.
Have a reason for every sentence, and even every sentence clause (as in, every comma insertion, every part of the sentence, every em dashed inclusion, that kind of thing). Ask yourself - what function does this serve? Have I met that function somewhere else? If it serves no function, or if it’s duplicative, consider cutting it. Or, the answer may be “none,” and you may choose to save it anyway - because it adds flavor, or is very in character for your PoV person, or any of a number of reasons. But if you’re saving it, make sure you’ve done so intentionally. It's important to be aware of what you're trying to do with your words, or else how can you recognize what to cut, and what not to cut?
Likewise, have a reason for every scene. They should all move the story along - whatever the story is, it doesn’t have to be “the end of the world,” your story can be simple and straightforward and sequential...but if you’re working to a word count, your scenes should still forward the story toward that end point. If the scene doesn’t contribute...you may not need them, or you may be able to fold it in with another scene, as suggested in item 6.
Review the worldbuilding you’ve included, and consider what you’re trying to accomplish with your story. A bit of worldbuilding outside of the bare essentials makes a story feel fleshed out, but again, a little can go a long way. If you’ve got lots of “fun” worldbuilding bits that don’t actually forward your plot and aren’t relevant to your characters, cut them. You can always put them as extras in your blog later, but they’ll just make your story clunky if you have a lot of them.
Beware of info-dumps. Often finding a more natural way to integrate that information - showing instead of telling in bits throughout the story - can help reduce word count.
Alternatively - if you over-show, and never tell, this will vastly increase your word count, so consider if there are any places in your story where you can gloss over the details in favor of a shorter more “tell-y” description. You don’t need to go into a minute description of every smile and laugh - sometimes it’s fine to just say, “she was happy” or “she frowned” without going into a long description of their reaction that makes the reader infer that they were happy. (Anyone who unconditionally says “show, don’t tell,” is giving you bad writing advice. It’s much more important to learn to recognize when showing is more appropriate, and when telling is more appropriate, because no story will function as a cohesive whole if it’s all one or all the other.)
If you’ve got long paragraphs, they’re often prime places to look for entire sentences to cut. Read them critically and consider what’s actually helping your story instead of just adding word count chonk.
Try reading some or all of the dialog out loud; if it gets boring, repetitive, or unnecessary, end your scene wherever you start to lose interest, and cut the dialog that came after. If necessary, add a sentence or two of description at the end to make sure the transition is abrupt, but honestly, you often won’t even need to do so - scenes that end at the final punchy point in a discussion often work very well.
Create a specific goal for a scene or chapter. Maybe it’s revealing a specific piece of information, or having a character discover a specific thing, or having a specific unexpected event occur, but, whatever it is, make sure you can say, “this scene/chapter is supposed to accomplish this.” Once you know what you’re trying to do, check if the scene met that goal, make any necessary changes to ensure it does, and cut things that don’t help the scene meet that goal.
Building on the previous one, you can do the same thing, but for your entire story. Starting from the beginning, re-outline the story scene-by-scene and/or chapter-by-chapter, picking out what the main “beats” and most important themes are, and then re-read your draft and make sure you’re hitting those clearly. Consider cutting out the pieces of your story that don’t contribute to those, and definitely cut the pieces that distract from those key moments (unless, of course, the distraction is the point.)
Re-read a section you think could be cut and see if any sentences snag your attention. Poke at that bit until you figure out why - often, it’s because the sentence is unnecessary, poorly worded, unclear, or otherwise superfluous. You can often rewrite the sentence to be clearer, or cut the sentence completely without negatively impacting your work.
Be prepared to cut your darlings; even if you love a sentence or dialog exchange or paragraph, if you are working to a strict word count and it doesn't add anything, it may have to go, and that's okay...even though yes, it will hurt, always, no matter how experienced a writer you are. (Tip? Save your original draft, and/or make a new word doc where you safely tuck your darlings in for the future. Second tip? If you really, really love it...find a way to save it, but understand that to do so, you’ll have to cut something else. It’s often wise to pick one or two favorites and sacrifice the rest to save the best ones. We are not saying “always cut your darlings.” That is terrible writing advice. Don’t always cut your darlings. Writing, and reading your own writing, should bring you joy, even when you’re doing it professionally.)
If you’re having trouble recognizing what in your own work CAN be cut, try implementing the above strategies in different places - cut things, and then re-read, and see how it works, and if it works at all. Sometimes, you’ll realize...you didn’t need any of what you cut. Other times, you’ll realize...it no longer feels like the story you were trying to tell. Fiddle with it until you figure out what you need for it to still feel like your story, and practice that kind of cutting until you get better at recognizing what can and can’t go without having to do as much tweaking.
Lastly...along the lines of the previous...understand that sometimes, cutting your story down to a certain word count will just be impossible. Some stories simply can’t be made very short, and others simply can’t be told at length. If you’re really struggling, it’s important to consider that your story just...isn’t going to work at that word count. And that’s okay. Go back to the drawing board, and try again - you’ll also get better at learning what stories you can tell, in your style, using your own writing voice, at different word counts. It’s not something you’ll just know how to do - that kind of estimating is a skill, just like all other writing abilities.
As with all our writing advice - there’s no one way to tackle cutting stories for length, and also, which of these strategies is most appropriate will depend on what kind of story you’re writing, how much over-length it is, what your target market is, your characters, and your personal writing style. Try different ones, and see which work for you - the most important aspect is to learn to read your own writing critically enough that you are able to recognize what you can cut, and then from that standpoint, use your expertise to decide what you should cut, which is definitely not always the same thing. Lots of details can be cut - but a story with all of the flavor and individuality removed should never be your goal.

10 Qs!
Tagged by @lordfenric (tysm!)
1. Do you have an OC that’s basically a version of yourself?
I....do actually. I've said it a couple of times and then I get embarrassed and then delete the post. Anyway, he's a version of myself AND a version of myself I wish I was. Ya know, my ideal self. He also filled another role which I haven't had the need to put to use as hard in a very long time which is a good thing I think. He's grown, evolved, matured as I have. Any changes to him are pretty much things I've changed about myself. Basically he'll always be a WIP because I'm one too.
2. What is your favorite type of scene to write?
Ooh! Many scenes! Fight scenes are super fun! Love me a good gun fight. I think I like more dramatic and emotionally charged scenes. I think I'm pretty good at those and suspense filled scenes. Not to be mistaken for horror though.
I know it wasn't part of the question but my least favorite are sex scenes only because I am HORRIBLY TERRIBLE at them. For real. I've tried my hand at it numerous times but it sounds disingenuous and like I'm trying way too hard. I really suck at them. Got a bunch of half finished files of n///sfw stuff that I never finished because I just think I did a terrible job at it. Maybe I'll upload 'em for a laugh one of these days.
3. Do you write cliffhangers?
No. I don't like them. I think they're like jump scares in horror movies. Just cheap ways to get the reader's attention.
If I ever leave a chapter on a cliffhanger it was not intentional. Much less would I leave a story on a cliffhanger.
4. One word or phrase that you think you overuse (but probably don’t):
I overuse the word however way too much. Probably another one but can't recall at the moment.
5. Least favorite thing about writing?
Editing. Gods above I haaaaaaaate editing. Mainly for two reasons: I always think the sentence/paragraph/chapter coulda been better executed. Second reason is I waste a shit ton of time second guessing my choices in words. Listen, you don't need to tell me my vocabulary is at kindergarten level. I KNOW it is. Most times I feel like shit about it and waste even more time with the browser on dictionary.com looking for synonyms for words to replace them with so it doesn't look like a 5-year-old just tried to write a weird espionage (idk C called what I'm writing that and it's stuck ever since).
6. How much prepwork do you do before writing if any? (outline, scene breakdown etc)
Far
Too
Much
I overthink it to death.
I have my plot, characters, locations and everything that goes into it. To the point of what weapons everyone will be using and why. I take a crash course on the locations, the culture, languages, take an unnerving amount of screenshots on Google Earth. Check stores and hours of business. Traffic, population, day to day activity. Check the history of the location and a refresher on what happened in the years where the story takes place. Find ways to translate the local language. Weapons! I check their history, when they were made, if they're still in service, what ammo, they're strengths and flaws, manufacturers. Same goes for the gear they wear. Why are the antagonists there. What do they want and how do they get it and how can they succeed. Should they succeed? Should they fail? Why? What motives they have. What the history and origin of the mythological creature(s) are involved is.
Take all I just said and triple the amount of work if I make up a town or city for the sake of storytelling.
Tl;dr a lot.
7. Do you use any visuals to help you with writing? If so, what?
Nowadays I have to. I don't know, I think my brain is broken or something and I can't concentrate like I used to. I can see and hear the scene in my head like a movie and I can repeat it as many times as needed but as soon as my fingers touch the keyboard I draw a blank and lose direction. I've actually resorted to doing storyboards of scenes and rough sketches of buildings so I know where to go, why and what for. I've turned all my sketchbooks into storyboards.
If there's hand to hand fighting or with bladed weapons I watch some videos on YouTube or wherever I find them and write down what I see and later edit it well.
If I was any good at it Legion would be a comic instead but I'm no good at it. So I gotta resort to writing and even then I heavily question my ability to do so. I know I'll get something written and finished someday but boy is it frustrating.
8. Is there magic or new technology in your WIP? How did you come up with it?
Yes. Both but mostly magic. I'm kinda working on implementing more technology. I do also combine both magic and technology. One example is a small sphere made of plastic that can easily break. Place it in your mouth and bite into it. Inside is a light pink mist that feels like a warm liquid (also minty sensation) that travels through your body. It's a combination of adrenaline, pain killer and healing aid. Won't magically mend broken bones, remove bullets or revive the dead but it'll help in ugly situations. There's also laser weapons that run on crystals. So long as the crystal has energy you got ammo then just recharge the crystal and you're good to go. There's some more tech but that's for another time.
The only magic I've made up for this is Astral magic and its counterpart and it's been a bitch trying to balance it out but I've gotten there.
Portals are also a thing I added in.
Honestly I really wanted to add magic. There's supernatural stuff in it anyway so might as well go all the way. I just come up with these out of wanting it there or to fill a role.
9. What are you currently reading?
Nothing. With my attention span I'm lucky to get to the third page. Last book I bought is still in a drawer gathering dust. Was a Tom Clancy I believe.
10. What would you like to see more of in Fantasy novels?
Wouldn't be fair to make demands for a thing I don't partake in now would it. Don't read anymore honestly.
Tagging: no one but if ya wanna give this a go then go right ahead.

ONE ~ Like Clockwork

1875, Dakota Territory.
"There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls." (George Carlin)
"You're what?" Gale's thoughts are still muzzy from the night before, and they take awhile to form and connect. Delly Cartwright, his right hand gal, is standing over him, a smile playing on her plush pink lips. She looks as fresh and pure as if she just stepped from the pages of a ladies magazine, the kind the soiled doves at Madame Coin's pore over (though they are no longer ladies), come all the way from Richmond with the mail coach.
The last time I saw Richmond, it was burning... He can still hear the roar of the flames some nights, when the moon is cool and round as a silver dollar, and he's alone with his memories, of a boy and a war and the terrible things a boy must do to become a man.
"Drink up, soldier." Delly leans in, and Gale catches a whiff of her scent, green and cool as spring water, and he wishes for the thousandth time that he could be the man she needs, a good man -- but that man died somewhere between Gettysburg and the Battle of the Crater -- yes, he died long ago, in Twelvetrees, when the world was crisp and new and the sun rose over the blue mountains.
"What is it, Miss Cartwright?" He's wide awake now, and his head is pounding louder than a Sioux war drum. Wordlessly, Gale accepts the willow pithy from her hand and chews it dry, swallowing it down with a gulp of water so gritty it makes his teeth ache for just one sip from the ice cold spring that flowed beside his boyhood home, back in the mountains, lost to him now. "What's so damn important you had to wake me up?"
"That chair is bad for your back." He looks down at Delly's hands and realizes she's holding a pillow, embroidered with a stitch so fine that it makes his eyes water. She places it between Gale and the hard back of the chair, and as he sinks against it, he wishes again that he was the kind of man who could marry her, but she's too good for this place.
As if on cue, there's a sound like cannon fire from the hill just above town, and Gale vaults upright, reaching blindly for a rifle that isn't there. The Yankees are coming. The world blurs and he's back in Gettysburg, just a boy, watching as a sea of blue pours down the valley towards him, his hands sweaty on his bayonet, until beside him Finnick begins to yip a wild war cry, and all the men up and down the line join in along with him. Give 'em hell, boys!
"Mr Hawthorne! It's all right! Mr Hawthorne!" Delly snaps her fingers sharply in front of Gale's face, and the world rights itself, coming back to the stark lines of reality. "That's just the General's cannon, signaling break of day." Delly's soothing Virginia drawl reels Gale back to 1875, twelve years on and a world away from the blood soaked earth of the place that was once home, the one place -- the one person -- he yeans for, above anything, but to whom he can never return.
She's married to someone else now. The thought still hurts as much as if it were yesterday that he stood in the gloaming and watched his girl brush her hair by candlelight through the window, only a tiny smile letting him know she knew he was there. The next day, he'd been on his way to the War, with her red ribbon wrapped around his wrist, marking him as hers, forever. He didn't know, then, that he'd never return.
"Mr Hawthorne. Sit down." Delly pushes on his shoulders, and he drops back into the chair, his surroundings coming into focus, bare and stark. "Coffee." She places a mug of thick black gold on the desk before him with a thunk. "You know you can tell me anything, right?"
But not this. No, he isn't that boy anymore, and he hasn't been for a long time, but he's still a man who's done dark and terrible things to get to the place he is now, and even though he regrets them, he can't share it with anyone except the ones who were there, the ones who stood in that valley with him as the mud turned red with their blood. "It's nothing."
Delly looks away, she crosses to the window and throws the curtains open. Somewhere, across the sunrise, a cuckoo is singing, ku-ku-ku. "I may have fought a different war, Mr Hawthorne, but I was in it all the same." She inhales a deep breath, then turns around. "I'm leaving."
Gale is struck dumb, the shock stripping the words from his tongue. Some things are a given in Panem: every morning, the General's cannon booms, signaling another day in hell to the miners; Haymitch Abernathy will always stagger into The Hob demanding a bottle of rotgut whiskey; and Delly Cartwright is Gale Hawthorne's secretary and stage manager, keeping The Hob from running itself into the ground. He couldn't have a better right hand woman: she balances the books, she keeps the place running like clockwork, and the miners all adore her.
"Leaving?" Gale's words are hoarse, they come out in a croak, and he throws back a revitalizing gulp of thick, hot coffee (real beans, all the way from civilization, not the chicory they used to drink of a morning back in the lines), scalding his tongue.
Delly twists her hands, looking at the floor, the ceiling, anywhere but at her employer -- former employer, as of today. When he stands up, she shivers, like a prairie hen sighted by the fox. "Yes." A note of deep reluctance has entered her tone. "Wheatley Mellark offered me marriage, Mr Hawthorne, and we're headed to San Francisco." She swallows, and lifts her chin. Tears sparkle in those big blue eyes, and he knows that if he gave her a single sign, her resolve would crumble at once. "We're leaving today. In an hour. I'm sorry."
As if on cue, there is a sharp rap on the door, and Gale's hand goes reflexively to his holster. His eyes meet Delly's, and he drops his hand from his gun, reaching out to stroke her cheek instead. Neither of them will ever know what he might of done next, how he might have changed all their fates in a single instant, because the door creaks open and Gale drops his hand as though burned, a deep blush spreading over Delly's freckled cheek.
"Miss Cartwright!" Wheatley Mellark steps into the room, brows drawing together in consternation at how close Delly and Gale are to one another at this moment, and Gale steps back to a respectful distance. After all, it's not as if he has a tendré for Miss Cartwright. It's only business between them, that's all it's ever been.
He tries not to think of how he almost touched her just now, he pushes that beyond him. It's too late for that, it's gone with the song of the cuckoo, melted into the heat of the morning. He spends far too many nights in the company of Comstock Hanna for this to ever have been anything other than what it is, even with all that lies unspoken here in the upper rooms of The Hob; the air simmering with something he dares not put a name to.
"Mr Mellark." Delly ducks her flaxen head, stepping back from Gale and looking at her fiancé from under darkened lashes.
Gale can almost see the wheels turning in Wheatley's brain as he looks between the two of them, and he holds out his hand. "My felicitations on your upcoming nuptials, Mr Mellark."
Wheatley lets out a puff of air, shaking Gale's hand, his grip tighter than Gale would like, both men baring their teeth as they pump up and down with a grip like a vise between them. "Thank you kindly, Mr Hawthorne." There is a hardness around Wheatley's mouth, and Gale wonders if Delly knows just what kind of a man she's about to marry, or if she would have married anyone just to escape Panem. To escape this. Him.
He runs one hand over his unshaven chin, studying the pair of them. Delly reacts first, she tucks her hand into Mellark's elbow and kisses his cheek perfunctorily, like the best damn Sarah Bernhardt impersonator this side of the Mississippi. "Mr Mellark."
"I'll be waiting downstairs, Miss Cartwright. Don't be long." Gale doesn't like the warning tone in Wheatley's voice, but he can't do anything about it. She's made her choice -- just like Katniss, both of them leaving him for Mellarks.
"Yes, Mr Mellark, I'll be down shortly. I still have to say my goodbyes to Mr O'Dair and Mr Thresh, and --" Wheatley cuts Delly off with a firm kiss on her those lips, a mouth made for sin, his eyes flicking at Gale as he stakes his claim. Then, running a hand over his waxed mustache and elaborate muttonchops, he sharply nods to Gale, and exits the room, his boots clomping loudly down the stairs.
From the ground floor, Gale can hear the piano tinkling off-key, and loud cursing as Haymitch Abernathy stumbles  through the saloon doors, there to fetch his first bottle of rotgut for the day. Yes, it's like clockwork: the cannon, the rotgut, and Delly... "You're leaving," he says gruffly, pulling a bottle of whiskey out of his desk and tipping it into his coffee. Today calls for something stronger.
"We can't be beholden to this town, Mr Mellark and I." There is a new thread of resolve in her voice, and he's not surprised. She always was one of the strongest women he's ever met, with a core of pure steel. "General Snow was putting pressure on Wheatley for protection money. A baker! Needing to pay for protection! Have you ever heard such a damn fool thing?" Delly begins to pace, her sprigged muslin skirts rustling. "Me and Mr Mellark don't mean to spend our lives beholden to the grace and mercy of the General. That's no life at all." She crosses her arms, staring out the window, as though willing the sun to never rise on the dusty streets of Panem. "And I can't stay here, Mr Hawthorne. Everything I want..."
I can't give it to you. He doesn't have to say it. It's there in the room as though he's spoken it aloud. If he had a heart, he lost it long ago, to the girl with the stars in her eyes, lost now to the memories of the mountains he can never return to, to the man he never could have been, and the life that will never be. "Delly..." he breathes out her name and she's there beside him, sitting down on the desk and taking the bottle from his numb fingers to tip it into her mouth.
She coughs, wiping the back of her hand over her lips, and takes another swig. Forget if Delly knows who she's marrying -- he wonders if Wheatley knows who he's marrying, just what kind of a diamond he's mined from the grit of this dark town. "It's not my fight any longer, and God willing, you won't let it become yours. There's more to life than vengeance, Gale. Katniss may not understand that, but don't let her fight become yours."
Doesn't she understand that he's been fighting since the day he was born, that family trumps all, that the bonds of blood and bone will never leave him? "I can't change Panem, Delly -- I know that. I'm just one man." And if he could -- would he? But he knows the answer.
General Coriolanus Snow owns the mine, and in a sense, he also owns the town. Hell, every saloon on Main Street owes fealty to Snow, and they all pay the devil his due -- or else they find themselves six feet under. Only a fool would take on a madman like Snow alone, and Gale has never been a fool.
"So you say." Delly hands the bottle back to him, and wordlessly begins to fix his collar. Her hair brushes his nose, and that clear green water smell is softer and sweeter than ever, and if he closes his eyes for a single second he can imagine he is back in Twelvetrees, and that there's a different girl before him, a name that lives on the tip of his tongue in that aching place between waking and dreams. "A man would need an army behind him for that... Captain." She places his hat on his head, tugging down the brim at a rakish angle.
"Delly..." Gale swallows his words, he doesn't know what else to say. I want...
"Everything I want has never been mine to have." She smiles, a sad, wistful smile, and pats his chest, surveying her work. "She's out there, Mr Hawthorne. Somewhere. I know she is. And you'll find her again, I know it."
And then she's so close that he can swear he'll know just how those pink lips will taste, and he closes his eyes. Delly's lips brush his cheek, and when he opens them again, she's gone.
He is in The Hob, his pride and joy, the saloon he built with his own two hands. This is the mining town of Panem, nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and none of them are any longer the people they used to be.
Once. Long ago...

A Pleasant Meet
((Don’t mind me, only reposting this piece since I made some adjustments to it before I put it on Writscrib, and with Writscrib unfortunately ending well...guess this is my only platform again. As such, the original version of this has been deleted since I honestly couldn’t tell you where the edits were made and it’s a solid ~6000 words. This was originally written about 2 years ago, so if it feels like it, that’s why. Also I do apologise that the read more doesn't work on mobile app. I added the long post tag but that's all I can do))
Pallia expected a lot of things today. It was the last day of the summer festivities - the three perigees that made the weather feel unbearable even at the dead of night - so there was sure to be more drinking and partying than she particularly enjoyed. She anticipated plenty of injuries and a few fights, but not many trolls would stop by unless something life threatening happened. If that was the case, it would likely be a low or midblood stopping in, barely putting pressure on whatever wound they had or with a friend carrying them in a panic. She was used to most of them being perturbed by her habits and reputation of outlaws coming in for a spin. For all she knew, they thought she was a former outlaw herself. Which she supposed she was.
Or it would be one of the outlaws or pirates to run in, as they were far more wont to do, a knife or a broken sword piece shoved somewhere where it shouldn't be. All the pirates already knew each other and were likely aware by this point that her hive was a neutral zone. Nor were they put off by all the rumors of her being a necrophiliac or witch doctor that inevitably float around when you use dead bodies for experimentation. Word travels fast. She wasn't even sure how so many of them found out about her.
So she wasn't terribly surprised when she got two sharp knocks on her lab door and Aisral entered, thankfully making plenty of noise so Pallia was actually aware of her presence. Nor was she surprised when Aisral said Mayola, a fuchsiablood, had been in the front room for a full five minutes and had been trying to get Pallia's attention before starting to pester Aisral on Trollian. And with Aisral in the middle of making a unitard that doubled as a cloaking device, she was not happy with the interruption. So with a quick apology to Aisral, she swiftly took off her prescription goggles and replaced them with half-moon glasses to run out and see what Mayola needed. That was where the unexpected thing happened.
Mayola herself seemed fine. She was currently leaning on the wall, arms crossed and fins flared out. A scowl was evident on her face. On the table in the front room laid some sort of seadweller body, dressed in a black overcoat, though they couldn't have been comfortable. She had to figure at least a foot of them hung off the table. "Couldn' take more time, could ya short stuff?" Mayola asked irritably.
"Sorry! I had an accident recently and --"
"Yeah, yeah. Don' care," Mayola said, waving a hand dismissively. As she spoke, her fins seemed to be retracting. "Didn' come for me, anyhow." She pointed to the table.
"FLARP? Again?" Pallia asked sharply. It wouldn't be after the first time after all and as much as she liked Mayola, the troll had a tendency to forget her own strength.
"Nah, found 'em at the festival. Nearly stepped on the fucker had it not been for Eeks!" Mayola said.
Pallia nodded, all other thoughts gone, and crouched next to the body, doing a quick observation. They - no, they seemed to be he - was a gaunt violetblood swimming in a black overcoat with violet trim. Underneath the overcoat was a full suit with a violet bow tie and a rather filled looking leather messenger bag crossed his torso. His fins were large and drooping, the tops even curling downwards. Dark purple circles surrounded his eyes. Pallia gingerly took an arm that was hanging off the side of the table, rolled up the sleeve just enough to reveal a bony wrist and checked for a pulse.
"So?" Mayola asked.
"He's alive," Pallia said. "Do you know him? I can't imagine there's many seadwellers in this area."
"There ain't. Me and the princess. Oh, and Niehea? No dudes though." She shrugged. "And 's the first time I've seen 'em. Doubt the fucker's from here, else he mighta not been in such a heavyass coat." Mayola pushed herself off the wall and headed towards the door.
Pallia frowned. "Heading out?"
"'Course. Gotta reputation to hold up for bein' an asshole...and I'm needed for some fineass drinkin'," she said. With a final wave, she added, "I'm out, short stuff."
And so that left Pallia with the mystery violetblood. If she had to take a guess, he was probably dehydrated. She could hook him up to an IV, but she would have to move him to one of the side rooms, and while he couldn't be heavy, she was still only five feet tall while he was...well, taller. Nor did she want to move the IV to a room where strangers could see it. Witch doctors no one wanted to mess with, but real scientists might draw unwanted attention of a purple variety. She could theoretically feed water by pouring it, but when the patient is passed out, that could be dangerous. So logically, the easiest step at this moment was to wake him up and just grab a bottled water from the mini fridge underneath her counter space. Something that thankfully, she could easily do without arousing suspicion.
Without another thought, Pallia slowly ran a finger down the gills along his neck.
The result was immediate. The violetblood's eyes shot open and she darted towards the fridge to grab a water. She had learned from more than a few times of waking up pirates that they never took kindly to being woken up, even if it was from fainting. He didn't. He didn't even move. Had it not been for the fact Pallia had just woken him up, she probably would've assumed he wasn't awake.
Finally, as she was heading back to the table to give him the water, he slowly sat and said something Pallia couldn't decipher.
"So…how're you feeling?" Pallia asked.
"You must not have heard me. I said I feel terrible," the violetblood said, turning his head towards her. His voice sounded posh, something she didn't surprise her, but far from unfriendly, at least in her mind. Then again, after Mayola's faux-lowblood accent, anything sounded posh yet outwardly friendly. "Sorry, I must not have adjusted to how sound is on air."
She shook her head. "No, I'm sure you were fine." She crouched back next to him and handed the water. "This should help make you feel better."
"Water? This is not because I am a seadweller, is it?" He shook his head. "No, no. That sounds bad. I merely wish to assure you are not just concerned that I should return to the ocean immediately."
"Hm?" Pallia cocked her head to the side, processing what he said. "Oh no! You're dehydrated."
The violetblood blinked several times. "No, no. I am feeling perfectly alright. It was probably just another fainting spell...possibly an anxiety attack." He stopped to hold up a shaky hand to his face and gently returned it to his side. "I just need sleep, I assure you."
"Your fins are drooping and you're wearing, like four layers on a hot night. You need water," Pallia said.
"Excuse me?"
She sighed. "You don't know? Have you ever been out of the water?"
"I just fail to see how a landdweller would know such a thing when you do not even have fins. Er...no offense. Was that offensive?" The seadweller was pointedly avoiding eye contact as he spoke, seeming to find more interest in his fingers.
"You're not the first seadweller that's had this problem."
"Fainting spells?"
"Dehydration. It's pretty common with seadwellers coming up to the area, expecting it to be cold when it's really hot and humid," she said matter-of-factly.
"...Oh."
Pallia reached up to touch one of the fins again, just to push the curl up. The violetblood let out a sharp gasp and his head suddenly turned towards her. A hand went to push her own away, but she had already pulled away, face flushed.
"Don't!" he exclaimed, eyes wide and a faint tint of violet on his face. "Oh dear. Apologies, I did not mean to snap. That is just…" his voice trailed off and he looked back away from her to his fingers instead, "sensitive, so to speak. For most, anyway. And I am not above the natural law of seadwellers to be an exception to that rule."
"It is? I didn't know that," Pallia said.
"You did not? I would have suspected you did, considering what you were talking about earlier," the violetblood said.
"Nope! No mentions in any readings I've done, any seadwellers I need to wake up I touch their gills not their fins, and the only seadweller I really ever have to service normally isn't in too much harm physically. She's the one who brought you here," Pallia said.
The violetblood was silent for a while, before finally looking back up at her quizzically. "You did what to my gills?"
"Well, if you ever need to wake a seadweller up, all you need to do is touch their gills. Natural instinct, I presume, even though you have two functioning respiration systems, that since they likely started in the water they want to preserve their breathing. Landdwellers have a similar function if you try to suffocate them in their sleep. Seadwellers might have that too, but I'd rather not wake someone up by actually trying to suffocate them when I can just tap on their gills and get the exact same reaction," Pallia said brightly. "Though, normally I have to do more than what I did to you. I barely touched them and your ocu...uh, glance...wait...eyes opened!"
The violetblood absently started touching his gills. "They...they do?" he asked.
"Yeah. Did they never teach you this stuff in schoolfeeding?"
"Ah...no. I suppose it just was not extremely important at the time," he admitted. "How do you know all of this?"
"Reading!" Pallia blurted out. It wasn't a total lie, as some of it she certainly had learned by reading the documents left in the building before it was her hive. The gross anatomy...not so much. "Lot of it."
"That is it? Just reading? Odd, one would have suspected we would have come across similar works," he said. He stood up and pulled the collar on his overcoat up, successfully hiding his gills and even his extravagant fins, to some degree at least, from the side. It matched the rest of his body: looking slightly too long and out of proportion with the rest of the coat. At least I know why he's wearing that thing.
"You should probably take that off," Pallia said. "It's crazy hot out there and daylight'll break soon. You're already dehydrated."
"I...are you sure? No one will attempt to rob me of any personal belongings I may have, or attack me simply because of my caste? Or something far worse. Not to mention I do not even know where to stay and...oh dear. What if--"
"You'll be fine," Pallia interrupted. "If anyone actually tries to rob you tell them you came from the clinic and they'll back off. Trust me. And there's a temporary hivestem you can stay at. It's in the richest part of the city, right up in the front where there's normally traffic. Tall building. Don't think you can miss it. It's a pretty nice place. And drink the water. Seriously, you'll feel better." She gave him the warmest smile she could muster for a stranger.
"And if I do not find it?" he asked worriedly.
Pallia paused for a while. She couldn't let him stay here, not right now at least. Then again...it would only be fair. She'd extend the offer to an innocuous lowblood to stay at her hive for a night, at least in the main room, so she should extend it out to a highblood or seadweller. But at the same time, she didn't have any actual sopor slime nor recuperacoon for him to rest in and if he did rest here in his condition, he wouldn't get any real sleep. She saw how irritable Aisral was when she initially stopped sleeping in it before levelling out. So the smarter decision would be to send him to the temporary hivestem, at least tonight. But if he couldn't find it, he may as well have some sort of contact for the place. "Do you have Trollian?" she asked.
"Erm, yes," the violetblood said cautiously. "Why?"
"I was just going to give you my account name, and if you had any problems you could message me," she said. "You don't have to give me yours. I don't really know any violetbloods personally who'd be messaging me, anyway."
He took a small sip of water before speaking. "Are you certain?"
"Of course! Why wouldn't I be?"
"I simply wish to be certain, is all," he said. "You do not have to do this if you do not want to."
She shrugged and said, "It's only fair. I'd do it to anyone else." She ripped off a piece of paper that said calculatingAlchemist and handed it to the violetblood, who quickly shoved the paper into his pocket. "There you go. In case you have any trouble!" She glanced outside past the glass doors. "You should probably head out. It's getting late."
His head jerked away from her and he looked into a nearby window to see that dawn was just starting to break. "Yes, so it is. Thank you," he said with a small smile.
"No problem!" Pallia exclaimed. "And best of luck!"
***
Sure enough, Dontoc found the hotel - at least that's all he could fathom what she meant by temporary hivestem with his knowledge of landdweller slang limited to books - with almost no problem. It was an impossibly tall building with a smaller wooden edifice jutting out of the left side. Even without a sign, it had to be the hotel. It was the only building in the rich section, if not the entire city, that was nearly this tall. An impressive feat too, as he remembered several of the buildings appeared to have extra stories stacked on as an after thought. But here, it looked as if a strong wind would topple the whole building, yet it didn't so much as budge.
A hand absently went into his pocket as he walked and found the slip of paper. He felt bad for having her Trollian handle without using it, even though the more reasonable side of him gently reminded him he didn't have to use it if he didn't need to. Was she expecting a message? Even one to let her know he found it and got there safely? After all, if she said to message him if there was a problem, she would want to know if everything went smoothly. But then again, would she really care that much about some stranger dropped onto a table? He sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair, attempting to force the thoughts out. He would worry about that once he got past the necessary social interaction.
He walked up to the desk and gave a quiet cough. The receptionist, a male cobaltblooded troll with small horns, gave him a wide smile.
"Why hello, hello! What can I do for you?" he asked.
Dontoc froze. He looked down onto the countertop and took a long drink of water. It should buy him enough time to save face.
Finally, he choked out, "Ah...yes. I am...um...here for a room."
The troll gave him a quick onceover before nodding. "Really now? Don't get a lotta seadwellers comin' in. Where ya from?"
Dontoc opened his mouth and quickly closed it a few times, expecting a comment to looking like a useless fish that never came. He had to fight against the near automatic response of actually saying where he came from, which involved far too much explanation and socialization to a receptionist. It then dawned on him it had been at least a good seven seconds before he answered, and maybe just any answer would be good. "I uh...came from the tealblood's hive outside of this city," he said.
"The clinic?" the blueblood asked suspiciously. "You seem a little too clean cut to come from there."
"Cl...clean cut?"
"Well yeah," he said nonchalantly as he started to fill out some paperwork, "plenty of unsavories come outta there. Girl in there's weird, too. Don't trust her myself."
"Well I can assure you I am not an 'unsavory'. I just woke up there after a bit of a fall," Dontoc said.
"Ah! That's how. She probably thoughtcha were a dead body. She takes them in, ya know. Who knows what she does with 'em. Some talk about how she uses them for occult magicks or something. Did you know that's a common thing here? Fuckin' kooks." He flipped the paper over and pointed at the line at the bottom. Dontoc could only shift around slightly, thinking about the unusual book he found. "But you're alive and she don't want that so she letcha go. I'm sure. Anywho, here. Just sign at the bottom. Considering everything, I'll just give ya the room. Just make sure to tell your seadwellin' friends, alright? You're on the first floor, third door on the right. Room 133."
Dontoc nodded. Well now I have to talk to her, he thought as he signed the line. He didn't bother telling the receptionist he didn't really have any friends, let alone seadweller ones. He quietly muttered a small "thank you" as the receptionist handed him the keycard and pointed him in the right direction, and Dontoc found the room with little effort.
It was a standard room, as far as hotels go. The most impressive thing was a small bookshelf with a couple nonfiction books inside, and a laptop resting on the desk. He sat down at the desk, pulled out the slip of paper in his pocket and took another drink of water. Hopefully she was still awake, or else he might end up with another sleepless night.
He made a Trollian account back when he was still a kid in the vain hope that one of the other kids being schoolfed would at least talk to him outside of their classes. It never happened. Since then it had largely sat there, unused. Even though getting back on the website was like picking up a book even after not having read in sweeps, it still felt foreign to get on and see the red chatbox. With a quick search for "calculatingAlchemist", he managed to find her account and cautiously typed out "Hello?"
He'd never had a response so fast. Oh no, does this mean she was waiting for a response this whole time? And here I was not planning on messaging her until I needed some rather probing questions answered. Oh dear. His mouse hovered over the abscond button and he suddenly felt far too warm for the room.
No. You can do this. Deep breaths. You have already talked to her once. Perhaps too harshly, but you did. And you were hardly in a right state of mind either, but how much harder could online be? In fact, it should be easier.

calculatingAlchemist [CA] would like to add you as a chump. Accept?
He clicked yes. Maybe out of hope, maybe out of desperation, or perhaps still out of the sheer wonder of who he managed to meet purely by accident. At least this would all be cleared up by tomorrow, and he could continue learning about land life.
He would just have to mentally prep for a possibly very long lunch.
***
Pallia arrived at the hotel five minutes early, wearing a black dress that touched the ground with a candy red cape, pointy hat snuggly in between her tall horns and a pair of shoes with just enough point to give the satisfied click on the tile floor.
"This is a place for honest folks," the receptionist, the usual cobaltblood she'd seen in here a few times, sneered. "And also, generally, trolls sitting higher than teal." She couldn't help but wonder if he ever actually slept or if he lived off of coffee.
"I am honest," Pallia said. "What, is this not honest to how trolls see me?"
"You know what I mean, tealblood."
"Not really. You said it was for honest folks. I don't think I've outright lied." She frowned. "Least as far as I can remember." Sure, leading other trolls on that she was a witch wasn't exactly honest and she could admit to that, but keeping the image up kept them from asking questions, especially when the image itself came out of a combination of calling what she did "alchemy" and her calling any medication she made for trolls "potions"....among other reasons. Only seemed fair she'd take the matter into her own hands and have control over it.
"You keep bringin' in all those pirates," he said. "I know you're working for them."
She rolled her eyes. "They were here before."
He muttered something - Pallia watched his mouth move - but she couldn't quite make out exactly what. All she could make out was something involving "keeping quiet".
There was a loud cough and she whipped her head over to the source, seeing the violetblood, Dontoc, from yesterday, walking up to her.
"Erm...hello," he said nervously. "I was afraid you would not completely remember."
"Nope!" She grinned, hoping it would calm him down somewhat. "And sorry about not seeing you there. I didn't hear you."
"You knew I was trying to call your name out?"
"I took a guess," she admitted with a shrug. "So shall we be off?"
He nodded. "That does sound like a good idea, yes. May I ask what you two were arguing about?"
"I'll explain when we sit down," she said as she started to walk towards the restaurant.
"Does it have to do with the outfit?"
"A little. Like it?" His mouth opened, but no sound came out. "You can be honest. No need to sugarcoat."
He did a once over of her, eyebrows raised in suspicion. "It is ridiculous."
She beamed at him. "Perfect."
They got seated almost immediately, all the way in the back corner as requested. And just as expected, they were the only customers present. Perfect. She just had to make sure the wait staff were tipped well and anything said here should stay here. That is, if it even got that far.
Dontoc looked relieved too. He sat down in the spot actually nestled in the corner. "Thank you for being willing to meet with me tonight," he said.
"Don't worry about it! You have questions, and depending on what they are, I'll have answers. Go ahead and ask whatever you need to," she said. With a smile, she added, "You look better, by the way. Your fins aren't curled in anymore. Still a little droopy, but they'll perk up. Try applying some water directly to them and your gills. I've heard that helps."
"You know a lot about seadwellers," Dontoc commented. "At least, for being unaware of the fin sensitivity."
Pallia laughed. "Comes with the job. That also wasn't a question."
He shifted in his seat. "Is that a problem?"
"Of course not. I'm just trying to be funny and not quite succeeding." Her eyes darted away from him as she did a quick scan for any server, but found none. "Though note, I'm not going to answer anything when the server's nearby."
He looked at her, puzzled for a second, then nodded. "Okay. Yes, that...that makes sense."
"Just to get that cleared up. So, what's your first question? I'm not counting your earlier one as part of this whole thing."
Dontoc cleared his throat. "Well I guess to start, ah, what exactly do you do? To know enough about seadwellers - which, ah, apologies for perhaps sounding harsh the night prior about everything, as you were correct, it seems - and yet only know a pair of them. It, well, does not quite add up is all I am saying."
Well, that was fast. Certainly, Pallia anticipated having to explain to him what she did eventually, but she wasn't ready for it to be the first question. He seemed trustworthy, at least. He had some of those standard seadweller catches: the proper speaking style, the formal state of attire for casual daywear and assumption a landdweller wouldn't know the basics of seadweller function, but he didn't sound pompous and arrogant about it like Careen, more doubtful, much like she'd anticipate from someone spending their whole life underwater and told one thing their whole lives. And now, he didn't sound doubtful of her, but rather of himself. Plus, she trusted Glacin, a purpleblood - self-admitted former subjuggalator by force, no less - obscuring his face (to everyone except her and his matesprit) actively using chucklevoodoos just to communicate. One curious seadweller with obvious socialization issues (even to her) looked far more trustworthy than him.
Hopefully she wouldn't regret this.
Pallia whipped her head around the room again to make sure everything was clear. "What did they schoolfeed you about science?" she finally asked.
Dontoc raised an eyebrow. "Science? You mean the technology and military advancement done directly under the Empress or...?" His voice trailed of, uncertain. "Well, we did talk briefly about the various mass murders of--"
"Yeah. Those." She shuddered. "I'd rather not think about that," she said flatly. With a brief shaking of her head, she added, "But did they tell you what it is exactly?"
"Erm...no. Well, yes, they did, but it did not sound correct. Were they supposed to?"
"I don't know. Lusus didn't want me to get schoolfed so I self taught myself most everything. Poor Monty would block the door just so I wouldn't go! And he might've eaten a truancy drone. Do those exist?" She shrugged. "Besides, I had enough stuff I found around my hive I managed to teach myself a lot, or had a couple others come in and help me. One of the pirates taught me a ton about plants that I didn't know, and I found out way more about computers when Aisral taught me and -- I'm getting on a tangent. Anyway, it is-"
"Hello there dears, can I get you two some drinks?" a new voice asked. Pallia jumped at the noise and turned towards the source. Hopefully she hadn't heard too much, she thought.
"Just water for me and…" she turned to Dontoc, who was currently hiding behind the menu, "him too."
The server nodded and walked off. Dontoc muttered something too quietly for Pallia to hear and she cocked her head.
"You're gonna have to speak louder. Your voice gets really quiet," she said.
"You did not have to do that. Um...thank you," he said. Pallia still had to struggle to make out the words, but thankfully it was at least quiet enough everywhere else she could do that much. Dontoc swallowed thickly and gave her a sheepish smile from overtop the menu. "So, what is it then?"
Pallia nodded. "It's studying the natural world - or unnatural world - and figuring out why stuff is the way it is, and how we can make use of that, through rigorous research, questioning and testing. And that's what I do. Several others that work with me too, but I'm really the only one who kind of works with the public. Well, me and Aisral but no one's going to try and slaughter her for "breaking the miracles" or whatever." She grimaced. "The only trolls who call us scienstiffs are those subjuggalators and anyone under them."
"So you being a witch then…?"
"I practice chemistry and biology and apply it to a lot of medical work. Two of the big three practices that is extremely regulated by the Empress. So I call what I do 'alchemy' which isn't that far off anyway, use the right jargon and suddenly word starts going around that I'm a witch. The body snatching thing probably didn't help with that," Pallia said with a shrug. "But that didn't scare you off."
Dontoc ran a hand through hair that looked like he had done that a thousand times already tonight. Maybe he had. "I have had my fair share of presumptuous judgements that I at least wanted to hear your side first. You seemed nice enough at least," he said. "Oh, and here come our drinks."
The server handed them their drinks and asked what they wanted for food. Pallia rattled off her regular - grubshrimp overtop rice in a spicy sauce with all the fixings - and Dontoc just ordered a piece of fish and a couple sides.
"They really are taking their time." Dontoc asked.
"Well, yeah. Normally with me they're longer because they normally serve cobalts and indigos coming to and fro. They're probably playing nice because you're a seadweller, while moving slow enough to try and...I dunno, either deter me from returning or deter us from eating together," she said. She scrunched her face in thought. "Maybe both?"
"Oh. Lovely," he muttered dryly, just loud enough for her to hear again. "I was hoping to escape all of that."
Pallia giggled. "You haven't been on land for very long, have you?"
"Is it that obvious?"
"If you thought being on land would make people care less about blood caste? Yeah, kind of. You'll see it for as long as you're on land, which I guess won't be long."
"Mm. Perhaps." He shifted in his seat again, moving so he was leaning forward on the table. "I have found seadwelling life may not be for myself and am, as such, attempting life on land. Mainland."
"Oh cool!" She beamed at him. "But that's off topic. I bet you wanna know about the uh...the body thing."
His fins fluttered lightly (leaving Pallia to make a mental note that they seemed to respond to different vocal stimuli than Mayola's or Careen's) as he answered, "Yes, if you could."
"Well, unlike some others in a similar line of work to myself, I like to hold myself to an ethical standard. So I don't practice anything on unwilling live participants. Thanks to a couple rumors I'm sure were started by subjuggalators after the last massacre, there's a fun idea out there that all doctors are amoral, torturing monsters," she said bitterly. "And lowbloods - well all trolls really, I shouldn't single one set out - just leave their dead there. Which is unsanitary. So I take the bodies and either use them for science or bury them. Sometimes they get fed to Monty. Keeps them off of the streets, at least."
"For science."
"Yeah. Normally for examining anatomy, but also for seeing what they died from. I'm trying to keep a record. It's especially good for seeing which diseases are more commonly culling and what should have vaccines made of them. Vaccines which are basically things you inject to let your immune system learn how to fight off diseases, either by giving you a muted form or -- oh look at me, I'm rambling. I should move on or we'll be here all night," she said.
Dontoc shook his head emphatically. His fins looked perkier than they were even a few minutes ago. Interest? That's all she could fathom. "No, no. I actually am quite interested. I feel like I have learned more these past few days than the whole time being schoolfed." His fins shuddered as his eyes widened. "Oh my, that came across not quite as intended."
"Well, it's not like I learned all of this myself. There's a lot of old books and diagrams back at my hive. I think they're from whoever was there beforehand."
If Dontoc wasn't sitting on the edge of his chair earlier, he was now, back straight and eyes focused wholly on her. "There are? Um, I mean, interesting. I could ah, keep them safe you know. Not like take them or anything! But transcribe them and keep transcribed copies at my hive. The old mansion is already a somewhat illegal library to begin with. Extra books are not going to hurt it in the slightest."
Pallia grinned. "I think I like the sound of that," she said. "Do you live close by?"
He slumped back down in his chair. "Not exactly," he admitted. "It would be quite the trip to come here daily."
Silence. Pallia knew what she wanted to do immediately, but she had to stop and think. Make sure this wasn't the worst idea she was about to proclaim. He already knew where she lived, so if he was some sort of inquisition, it was too late already. Aisral lived with her, and connections to everyone except Glacin and Sekier were easy enough to make, fuchsia protection from Mayola be damned. And if he wanted to transcribe her notes, that was always good. Even if he took them and ran off, so long as she snatched the originals and hid them back in the secret tunnel, they'd remain safe enough. Not like she had to tell him about that part of the hive.
With her mind made up, it was her turn now to sit on the edge of her seat, leaning forward with shining eyes and steepled fingers. "You don't have to if you don't want to, you know."
"But I want to!" Dontoc exclaimed. "What you are doing sounds fascinating and --"
"No not that! Goodness no! I have two whole floors of nearly empty rooms in my hive and already one other troll living with me. So long as your lusus can survive on their own I see no reason why I can't set up a room for you," Pallia said. "And if you want, we can get you a lab too. Plenty of those as well. You'll just have to meet all the others. Aisral does textile engineering. She lives in my hive on the fourth floor. There's a seadweller who's constantly commissioning pieces from her. Zanchi studies genetics and evolution. Volcor studies mechanical engineering. Those two live nearby and stop in periodically. And Glacin normally just throws himself up on videochat with his matesprit. He studies pathology and epidemiology and his matesprit studies…" Pallia paused for a while and tapped her chin a few times in thought, "necrobiology. Or something like that. It's unique. And like I said, I study biochemistry. I can show you what I'm working on when we get there. So how's that sound?"
The other troll was silent, but his fins were fluttering heavily. Happiness? Wait no, flustered, Pallia thought. It was all she could guess.
Dontoc then nodded. "You want...you want me to live with you?" he asked doubtfully.
She deflated slightly in her chair. "If that's okay with you, of course. If it's not--"
"No no. I ah...you caught me off guard." He let out his own laugh, though it sounded bittersweet to her ears. "Let us just say I am unused to such kindness and leave it at that."
"Then it's settled," Pallia said. "It'll be nice having someone else in there, even if it's just a warm body. Aisral doesn't count."
He grinned. It lit up his whole face, perking his fins further and lighting his eyes, and Pallia quietly hoped it could stay that way. "Your behavior is somewhat infectious, just so you know. Even if you are a tad strange."
"Is that a problem?"
He hummed. "I do not think so," he said. "Oh, and one last question. To ease my own anxieties."
"Hm?"
"He mentioned unsavory trolls coming to your hive for care. Is that true?"
She nodded. "There's a big pirate place pretty close and they know everything I do is safe and effective. But don't worry, they don't touch anything in that hive. One of them did and ended up getting eaten by a giant snake. He didn't initially, but giant snake is so much easier to explain than horrible acid burns....then giant snake. Word spreads fast."
"That is why you said if I had any problems with an attempted assault to let the troll know who sent me, is it not?"
"Exactly!" She saw him flinch at the sudden shrillness in her tone and added, quieter, "That doesn't change your opinion does it?"
"Pallia, I am afraid you got me far too interested in what I do not know and wish to know unless you said it was to end in my culling I do not think I could turn back. One one hand, they do tell us curiosity is what killed the meowbeast but…"
"But satisfaction is what brought it back," Pallia finished. She leaned back in her chair right as the server came over to give them their food. "And somehow I think living here will satisfy most of your curiosity for whatever you were looking for."
"Perhaps," Dontoc said. "It will if nothing else, be an interesting ride."

I had a great week. There is a bunch more downloader work and some new shortcuts.
tag blacklists
After a long time, the client now supports tag blacklists! I've put them under tag import options.
They use the newer 'tag filter' object, which scans a file's tags as they come in, and if it sees any it would exclude (like 'scat' or whatever else you might not want), it stops the file from importing automatically.
On the newer download systems, this vetoes the file before it is downloaded (saving you some time and bandwidth), but the legacy downloaders still download the file and tags together, so they have to stop after the download is done. There are also currently and temporarily two locations where default tag import options can be set. The ambiguity here should all be cleaned up in the coming weeks as I move everything over to the new systems.
If you have been waiting for this, please give it a go and let me know how it works for you. It seems ok in my testing, but I may have let some unusual situations fall through the cracks.
url normalisation and other downloader work
An important objective of this downloader overhaul has been to 'normalise' URLs--to collapse the different ways you can write a single URL into a single comparable format that is not only clean and pretty but also makes it easy to determine if the client has seen and downloaded it before. The new 'url classes' system does this, and in 304, the client will apply URL normalisation to all incoming import URLs. This mostly matters for boorus like e621 that append some random tags at the end of the URL as a description, but it will also convert any matched legacy http definitions or drag-and-drops to https automatically.
The way the client determines if it has seen a URL before--particularly when it has not been matched by the new system (an unknown url class)--is also much improved. The client can now better deal with conflicting data like multiple files claiming to have the same URL without either redownloading every time nor abandoning the attempt entirely.
The main import object will now also handle certain import errors like 404 and the new tag blacklist event in a more graceful way (now called 'veto' status) and also present more information in its '23 successful, 5 skipped' status text.
I've added several basic parsers to the simple downloader for yiff.party as well--thanks to @cuddlebear on the discord for the submission. I expect to do more here in future as well (likely making a watchable url class and full-blooded PageParser so you can 'watch' a yiff.party stream like a thread and even a subscription).
Due to a mistake in the update code, I accidentally restore the simple downloader parsers to default (which includes the new yiff.party parsers)--if you have a bunch of custom simple downloader parsers set up, please export them before you update, or wait a week for the fixed update code (which will just add the new parsers to whatever already exists) to roll out.
new shortcuts
You can now set shortcuts for opening the new downloader pages (urls, simple, and thread watcher) and the duplicate filter and page of pages, all under the 'main_gui' shortcut set. Support for individual file pages should come in the near future.
And you can now shortcut all the duplicate-setting actions (like 'set these all as alternates' or even 'the focused one is better than all the others selected') under the 'media' shortcut set. These are advanced commands, so if you don't get the duplicate filter yet, stay away!
full list
renamed the new 'tagcensor' object to 'tagfilter' (since it will end up doing a bunch of non-censoring jobs) and refactored it into clienttags
attached a tag filter object to all tag import options to act as a tag blacklist. all tags that go through the import pipeline (except for a couple of old legacy instances) are now checked against the blacklist, and if a bad tag is found, the file vetoes! tag import options has some new ui to handle this and background code to deal with inheritance from defaults and so on
new file import urls that have url classes, no matter their source, are now normalised!
all new file import urls are now tested against both the original and normalised version of the url, so even though previously parsed urls remain un-normalised, new urls that are pre-normalised the same will not count as new! -fingers crossed-
on update, the db will get normalised copies of all existing urls. this means many files will now have two versions of its urls--some ui to collapse everything down to only the normalised version (after some human eyes have passed in front of this big change) will come in the coming weeks
some sites where normalisation is a consistent problem for later redownloads (like e621, which appends 'preview' tags to the post url) _should_ now be caught reliably!
the 'allow subdomains' on edit url class panel is now named 'match subdomains' and has a tooltip to better explain how it works
'keep subdomains' is now 'keep matched subdomains' and has a tooltip as well
the 'keep matched subdomains' enabled behaviour (and some normalisation calculation) is now additionally governed by the 'associate url with files' value and api url conversion info rather than just 'match subdomains' and raw url type
fixed an issue that was stopping the 'associate url with files' option sticking in edit url class panel
edit url matches now resorts after an add or edit action
all listctrls with a wrapper panel now resort after an import from clipboard, png, or defaults call
url matches now match against www*. versions of their domain regardless of 'match subdomains' settings
updated xbooru url classes to prefer https
the manage url class links panel now has a 'clear' button to clear a url_class->parser link
introduced three new simple downloader parsers for yiff.party, thanks to @cuddlebear on discord for the submission
the old 'uninteresting mime' status has been expanded to a wider 'vetoed' status to represent all file imports that are abandoned without a particular error (e.g. tag blacklist, wrong filesize or resolution)
the import system now reports the total of 'num vetoed' as 'num ignored' in its summary statements
it now also reports 'num skipped'
the 'num successful' and 'num already in db' are now folded more neatly together in import cache summary statements
file downloads that are cancelled will now set a 'veto' state rather than a 'skip' state
improved file import exception handling across the board
improved how single-file-result parsing vetoes propagate up to the file import status cache
404 network errors will now provide a 'veto' status rather than an 'error'
vetoes will not count as errors when deciding whether a subscription should be abandoned early (so a bunch of decomp bombs or 404s will no longer stutter a subscription!)
misc fixes and improvements to the new download stuff
wrote a new parsing cache that saves a lot of work in the new parsing system
improved the 'is this url known?' test to better deal with situations where all the given urls are galleries or unrecognised--a better aggregate of file status is formed, and 'already in db'/'deleted' statuses will apply if there is no evidence otherwise (the dev got the new logic for this from a legit nightmare about urls downloading over and over, so let's hope it works out)
the 'is this url known?' logic also recovers from 1->n url->hash relationships where it does not expect them, trying to find 'already in db' hashes over 'deleted' ones
to clear up some ambiguity, galleries or subscriptions now give a different 'checking in x seconds' status when waiting on the first page of a query
the 'noneablebytescontrol', as seen in edit file import options, will now correctly disable/enable its bytes sub-control when it is none'ed
a persistent issue with the new network engine sometimes failing to correctly error after certain broken connections (the computer going to sleep mid-download was a common cause here) should now be recovered from and the connection naturally reattempted
added three new shortcuts to the 'main_gui' shortcut set that allow for opening a new 'urls', 'simple', or 'thread watcher' downloader page
added two more shortcuts to 'main_gui' for new 'page of pages' and 'duplicate filter page'
moved some old 'new page' menu code to the new application command system
added numerous 'duplicates' shortcuts to the 'media' shortcut set that will work on selections of thumbnails
the thumbnail duplicates menu actions now go through the new application command system
fixed an issue where the current tag parents caches was not refreshing when notified
inputting a short invalid syntactic input on a 'read' tag autocomplete such as '-' will now clear the system predicates list--system preds should now only show on a completely empty input
fixed an issue where certain combinations of 'remove a tag, then re-add it' nullipotent actions in a single manage tags dialog transaction were not applying reliably (sometimes, the subsequent mirror action was not occuring due to a processing re-order optimisation at the db level)
made some animation code a little safer and quieter as a test for some users who were getting blitzed with some deadwindow error spam in certain situations--let's see if this changes anything
replaced all the em dashes in the help with double hyphens as github pages was rendering them wrong
added CrystalDiskInfo recommendation to 'help my db is broke.txt'
misc cleanup
next week
Now all the new urls going into the system are normalised, I would like to get the gallery and subscription downloaders to start using the new system where it can find a parsing solution. I and other users can then start adding parsers and it should all naturally migrate over the coming weeks.
I've also still got plenty of small stuff to work on.
