This blueprint outlines the essential steps to Grammy glory, providing indie artists with the tools and strategies needed to turn their aspirations into reality.
Crafting Exceptional Music:

Importance of High-Quality Songwriting and Production:
Songwriting: Crafting compelling lyrics and melodies is essential. Focus on storytelling, emotional depth, and originality in your songwriting.
Production Quality: High-quality production is a must. This means investing in professional recording equipment or studio time and working with experienced producers and engineers.
Tips for Creating Music that Stands Out:
Unique Sound: Develop a distinctive sound that sets you apart from other artists. Experiment with different genres and styles to find what makes your music unique.
Emotional Connection: Aim to create music that resonates with listeners on an emotional level. Authenticity and vulnerability in your lyrics and performance can help build a strong connection with your audience.
Building a Strong Online Presence:
In today’s digital age, having a robust online presence is crucial for indie artists. This not only helps in gaining a fan base but also in catching the eye of industry professionals.
Utilizing Social Media Platforms Effectively:
Content Creation: Regularly post engaging content on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook. Share behind-the-scenes footage, music snippets, and personal stories to connect with your audience.
Interactive Engagement: Engage with your fans through live streams, Q&A sessions, and interactive posts. Building a loyal community around your music is essential for long-term success.
Engaging with Fans and Building a Community:
Fan Interaction: Respond to comments, messages, and fan posts. Show appreciation for your supporters and make them feel valued.
Exclusive Content: Offer exclusive content such as early access to new releases, special merch, and behind-the-scenes looks at your creative process. This helps foster a deeper connection with your fans.
Networking with Industry Professionals:
Building a network of industry contacts is vital for advancing your music career. Relationships with industry professionals can provide valuable opportunities and insights.
Importance of Industry Connections:
Networking: Attend music industry events, conferences, and festivals to meet and build relationships with producers, managers, and other musicians. Networking can lead to collaborations, mentorship, and opportunities.
Professional Organizations: Join professional music organizations like the Recording Academy, ASCAP, and BMI. These organizations offer resources, networking opportunities, and industry support.
Strategies for Effective Networking:
Music Conferences: Participate in conferences such as SXSW, MIDEM, and the ASCAP Expo. These events provide platforms for learning, networking, and showcasing your music.
Music Festivals: Perform at music festivals and showcases to gain exposure and connect with industry professionals. These events are excellent for networking and getting your music heard by a wider audience.
Effective Promotion and Marketing:
Effective promotion is key to gaining the attention needed for Grammy consideration. Utilize both traditional and digital marketing strategies to get your music heard.
Social Media Marketing:
Targeted Ads: Use social media platforms’ advertising tools to target specific demographics. Promote your music to users who are likely to appreciate your genre and style.
Engaging Content: Create engaging ads that capture attention. Use high-quality visuals, catchy hooks from your songs, and strong calls to action.
Collaborations with Influencers and Other Artists:
Influencer Marketing: Collaborate with social media influencers who align with your brand. Influencers can help promote your music to their followers, increasing your visibility and credibility.
Artist Collaborations: Work with other artists on collaborative projects. This not only broadens your audience but also brings fresh ideas and creativity to your music.
Navigating the Grammy Submission Process:
Understanding the Grammy submission process and ensuring your music meets all requirements is crucial for indie artists aiming for recognition.
Understanding the Submission Guidelines:
Eligibility Criteria: Ensure your music meets the Grammy eligibility criteria, including the release date window and accepted formats. Your music must be professionally produced and widely distributed.
Submission Portal: Submit your music through the official Grammy submission portal. Follow the guidelines carefully to avoid any issues with your submission.
Ensuring Your Music Meets Eligibility Criteria:
Technical Standards: Your recordings must meet the technical standards set by the Recording Academy. This includes high-quality mastering and proper documentation.
Documentation and Credits: Provide accurate and complete documentation for your submissions, including songwriter credits, production credits, and release information.
Winning a Grammy requires talent, hard work, and strategic planning. Indie artists can achieve Grammy glory by following this blueprint and staying dedicated to their craft. By crafting exceptional music, building a strong online presence, networking with industry professionals, effectively promoting your music, and understanding the Grammy submission process, you can increase your chances of turning your Grammy dreams into reality.

what i've been reading (august 2022)
disclaimer: I have been reading way too much. I work in the literary field so I have access to a lot of books and I don't know how to control myself.
books
Orphic Paris by Henri Cole: I have nothing good to say... sorry
Plainwater by Anne Carson: speechless. best read of the month. I devoured it in 2 days it was THAT good. Anne Carson never disappoints.
Crossing the Water by Sylvia Plath: amazing, beautiful, my favorite Plath collection so far it was just so so so good; I'm speechless.
Anthology of Palestinian Poetry: very interesting and so diverse collection of poetry from Arabic and Palestinian poets! Some were better than others but a great introductory read to delve into this field of poetry:)
The Essential June Jordan: this blew me away. one of the most impactful read of this year. I loved it so much I want to read it again and again and again.
Selected Poems by Paul Auster: a bit repetitive in the leitmotivs but it was really interesting. I need to read more of this author!!
The Albertine Workout by Anne Carson: great reflexion / poem on the character of Albertine in Proust’s Search for Lost Time. Would need to read it again after reading Proust to fully understand though.
Poems 1962—2012 by Louise Glück: a re-read. loved it even more than the first time. I can't express how much I love her poems.
The Royal Game by Stefan Zweig: such a compelling short story !! I couldn't put it down. highly recommend for a short read.
articles
“Anne Carson's Splintered Brilliance” by Charlotte Shane (2016) : “Anne Carson lives for the breaking up, the separation. She’s trafficked in fragmentation for a long time: Her career as a scholar of ancient works, which are often fragmentary or have no definite author, required becoming intimate with the incomplete, the impossibility of completion”
“The Handmaiden” and the Freedom Women Find Only with One Another by Jia Tolentino (2016)
On Rediscovering the Natural World Through Ovid by Nina MacLaughlin (2019) : “We grow close and closer, as with a friend, a love, the members of one’s family, so, too, a city block on the commute, the shifting light, the shape of the leaves on the Japanese maple around the corner. The tiny patch of lavender on a corner near my apartment that I see each early morning, a version of a friend. I am curious about it, interested in its presence and its growth: Who planted it, I wonder. Why’s it here?”
mangas & comics (I've been reading A LOT of those........)
Spy Family vol. 1 — 8 by Tatsuya Endo : I spent a whole 5 days selling them at the Paris Japan Expo back in July and they were so popular I decided to read them and I really liked it!! It was very funny and endearing. Very glad I stole magnets for my fridge at my job back in July.
Seuls vol. 1 — 13 by Fabien Vehlmann & Bruno Gazzotti : very interesting French comic I used to read when I was a child and recently discovered again!! Highly recommend. About children surviving some sort of 'apocalyspe' alone when every grown-ups have disappeared.
Le Bateau de Thésée vol. 1 — 10 by Toshiya Higashimoto : manga about a man trying to fix his family history that has been ruptured by a tragedy. Very reminiscent of Erased. I liked the world-building as time travels can be sometimes confusing. Not very convinced by the ending though. The main character is so prettily drawn!!!
Beauté vol. 1 — 3 by Hubert and Kerascoët : another French comic I used to read as a child (which I was probably too young to read...) and recently discovered again. This book is GORGEOUS (I love Kerascoët's artstyle<3) and asks some extremely interesting philosophical questions about beauty and politics.
Mon papa dessine des femmes nues by Philippe Dupuy : very heart-warming comic about art, fatherhood and sensibility. Dupuy's illustrations are mind-blowing and this feels like a true trip inside another world. Very interesting questions on culture and art in general, through the lens of children.
memoir research
"On Rediscovering the Natural World Through Ovid" by Nina MacLaughlin (2019)
“THE MYTH OF DAPHNE ON A COIN MINTED AT DAMASCUS.” by Gabriela Bijovsky (2003)
“ORACLE TREES IN THE ANCIENT HELLENIC WORLD.” by Luís Mendonça de Carvalho, Francisca Maria Fernandes and Hugh Bowden (2011)
“POETRY, METAMORPHOSIS, AND THE LAUREL: OVID, PETRARCH, AND SCEVE.” by JoAnn DellaNeva (1982)
“The Roots of ‘Daphne.’” by J. L. Lightfoot (2000)
“Ovid’s Metamorphic Bodies: Art, Gender, and Violence in the ‘Metamorphoses.’” by Charles Segal (1998)

I Get to Be in Anime Sometimes and That STILL Freaks Me Out a Little
Be me, circa early 2000’s. Young teenager, staying up late on a school night, keeping my television as low as possible so my mom doesn’t come in and yell at me to go to sleep. We’re through all the preliminary adult animated cartoons that I saw on Fox, like, a year ago at that point. And then it’s time. The introductory bars of “Ready, Steady, Go” or “I Am” or “Tank” or “Dream Island Obsessional Park” or the opening of whatever show or season was first in the lineup at the moment. Anime. This weird, Japan-based form of animation that, for a long time, I could not get some people I knew to understand past Pokemon or Speed Racer.
“Okay, so they’re alchemists, alright? And they’re brothers and one of them had his soul bound to a suit of armor…are you following?”
And I was in that weird sweet spot of anime fan. Too poor and lacking in the right social connections to import, so I hadn’t memorized all of Final Fantasy: Advent Children like one of my friends in band. Stuck with dial-up way later than everyone else kept my access to online communities limited. Pre-YouTube meant fansubs and video sharing as a whole were more…complicated. But I had Adult Swim. I had Toonami.
And they beamed that sick anime goodness right into my impressionable eyeballs.
As the years went on, the fascination faded. That time that was previously set aside for watching was transformed into studying and marathoning Super Smash Brothers as I aged into college. Then, on my own, I couldn’t afford cable, and the new anime I had access to eventually shifted to the very new Netflix streaming service or whatever I could find broken into pieces on YouTube. By the time Crunchyroll and Funimation streaming arrived, I was an adult. Like…a real one. The kind of adult that has so many adult things to do just to survive that keeping up with new anime gets harder and harder.
Then an incredible thing happened in January of 2019.
I walked into a studio in north Texas and recorded my first ever line as an English dub voice actor for an anime. Now, this wasn’t some overnight thing. I had been busting my butt in indie games and web animation for a handful of years, at that point. I wasn’t even specifically looking to get into anime when I had started voice work, but moved it into my goalposts as I realized it might actually be accessible to me. But that moment? That instant of old and new, past and present and future coalescing? Completely incomparable.
Then something else would happen within the next year. I had started working in earnest, getting my punches in with bit parts and crowds, the essential background matter of anime. I get called in for this new show I had never heard of. First episode. Just some adult women fussing over the main character, explaining his terrible, horrible backstory. Great stuff. The usual. Was happy to be there working with amazing people.
Fire Force would go on to have a a huge premiere event at Anime Expo. Oh wow! Cool!
Coming this summer to Toonami: Fire Force!
Oh! Cool!
Wait…
Oh…OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT?!
Has something ever happened to you where you didn’t realize it had always secretly been dream of yours until it actually happened?
But you see…then it gets…weirder.
A year later, middle of 2020. I get called in for a “dub from home,” the thing that’s kept simul-dubbed anime going through the pandemic. It’s Fire Force, again.
What would proceed to occur over the next couple of hours was one of the most physically demanding voice acting sessions I had had at the time.
That episode would stream on Funimation’s site a few weeks later.
That episode would go on to air on Toonami a few months later.
So, there’s exactly one thing weirder (so far) than suddenly finding out your voice is going to be on Toonami. That your dulcet tones will appear on Cartoon Network, a channel you were basically raised on.
And that’s when a character you voice appears on that selfsame channel getting the ever loving crap beat out of him for three minutes straight and watching the reactions to it in real time on Twitter.
Now I’m most assuredly in the “do the work” part of the anime aspect of my voice acting career. I’ve been very lucky to get a few great parts and do some really great work. And I generally don’t freak out about it. It’s a job. A job I love doing every single day I get to do it and take very very seriously but a job nonetheless.
But then there’s that twelve year old.
That twelve year old that tuned in every week to see what would happen to Inuyasha and Kagome.
And I think about who that’s going to be in fifteen to twenty years. Who that kid is now.
And I hope whoever that kid is, that when the time comes they will also call every single one of their friends to find out who has cable so that they can get a picture of their name in the credits.

Join us for a virtual tour of JR: Chronicles, the first major exhibition in North America of works by the French-born artist JR. Working at the intersections of photography, social engagement, and street art, JR often collaborates with communities by making portraits and wheat pasting them in nearby public spaces. See how JR has expanded the meaning of public art through his ambitious projects that give visibility and agency to a broad spectrum of people around the world.
Created by Sharon Matt Atkins, Director of Exhibitions and Strategic Initiatives, and Drew Sawyer, Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian Curator, Photography, Brooklyn Museum.
Born in Paris in 1983 to Eastern European and Tunisian immigrant parents, JR began his career as a graffiti artist under the alias Face 3.

After finding a camera in the Paris Métro in 2000, he started to document his posse of friends in the act of graffitiing and eventually pasted photocopies of these images onto exterior walls and added painted frames, creating Expo 2 Rue (Sidewalk Galleries).
Tumblr media
Since the pasted images almost always get washed and worn away, documentation of these installations, including the voices of the participants through video and audio recordings, is central to JR’s practice.
Tumblr media
In 2004 JR initiated his first major public project, Portrait of a Generation, which featured photographs of young people from housing complex in the Parisian suburbs of Montfermeil and Clichy-sous-Bois.

JR and his friend Ladj Ly, a filmmaker and resident of Les Bosquets, worked with these communities to produce black and white portraits.
JR used a camera with a wide-angle lens, which not only distorts their faces but also conveys extreme proximity and intimacy, as opposed to photojournalists who use telephoto lenses from a distance.
Tumblr media

JR and his collaborators then pasted the enlarged images in the surrounding neighborhood of Montfermeil and, eventually, throughout central Paris. Each pasting included the name, age, and address of the sitter.
Tumblr media
This photograph of Ladj Ly and friends was the first large-scale image that JR and his friends wheat pasted in the neighborhood prior to the riots there in 2005. It appeared as the backdrop in photographs accompanying newspaper articles and television footage about the uprising, thereby becoming JR’s first published work.

In 2013 JR learned that the housing towers in Les Bosquets were going to be demolished, so he and a group revisited the Portrait of a Generation project by pasting portraits in the interior. As the buildings were being torn down, the monumental images of residents were slowly revealed.
Tumblr media
In 2005 JR traveled to Israel and Palestinian territories, where he and his friend Marco were inspired to carry out a public project similar to Portrait of a Generation.
The following year, during a period of fierce tension and fighting in the Gaza Strip, they began meeting with and making portraits of Palestinians and Israelis who held the same jobs.
Ayman Abu Alzulof, a Palestinian actor from the town of Beit Sahour, said he agreed to be photographed because the images would be seen on both sides of the border. "It shows that both parties look like each other, as human beings,” he explained. “It's difficult to differentiate between a Palestinian face and an Israeli face. It will also show that we live here. I think a lot of people will talk about it.”
Tumblr media
In 2008 JR initiated Women Are Heroes after learning about the deaths of three young men in the favela of Morro da Providência in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the subsequent riots ignited by the involvement of the Brazilian military.
The exhibition includes this multi-media diorama that narrates the stories of the participants and project.

After meeting with residents for a month, the artist collaborated with them to make photographs of the eyes and faces of local women, including some related to the murdered men. Together, they pasted the blown-up images on staircases and buildings around the favela.

JR continues to work with the communities with which he partners. In 2009, he established the Casa Amarela (Yellow House) in Morro da Providência in 2009.
The moon on top of the house is actually a room, where artists from all over the world can stay in exchange for conducting workshops for the children and adults of the favela. They just celebrated their 10th anniversary!
The exhibition includes a model of Casa Amarela, created by Brazilian artist Raphael Truffi Bortholuzzi
Tumblr media
Between 2008 and 2010, JR also completed Women Are Heroes installations in Cambodia, India, Kenya, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
Here is an installation that shows portraits of some of the participants alongside an aerial shot of the images printed on vinyl and installed on rooftops in Kibera, Kenya in 2009.
The images both transformed the landscape and provided protection from the rain.
Tumblr media
In 2008 JR began his project The Wrinkles of the City in Cartagena, Spain. As he had done for Women Are Heroes, JR collaborated with the community to create large-scale portraits. This time he photographed the oldest inhabitants of the city.
This gallery also demonstrates more of JR’s process, including the rolls of paper shown here and mockups.
Tumblr media
In 2011 JR won the TED Prize, a $100,000 award given to “leaders with creative, bold wishes to spark global change.” The prize enabled JR to launch Inside Out, a global public art project. He began encouraging others to use his process and providing the means to do so, expanding his collaborative practice to a fully participatory art project.
This installation highlights many of the Inside Out projects (@insideoutproject) through more than 50 videos created by the organizers and participants of actions around the world.
Tumblr media
Since 2011 more than 400,000 portraits have been pasted in 141 countries worldwide, including visitors to the Museum’s First Saturday programming last August!
Tumblr media
In September 2017 JR installed a monumental photograph of Kikito, a one-year-old boy from Tecate, Mexico, in a location near the child’s home along the U.S.-Mexico border. The giant toddler, seeming to peer over the fence, prompted the viewer to wonder, What does a child think about a fence he sees every day?
Tumblr media
Kikito, 2017
Although the nearly 70’ tall image stood in Mexico, it could best be viewed from the United States. Kikito’s mother remarked: “I hope this will help people see us differently than what they hear in the media. . . . I hope in that image they won’t only see my kid. They will see us all.”
Tumblr media
JR (French, born 1983). Migrants, Mayra, Picnic across the Border, Tecate, Mexico—U.S.A., 2017. Installation image. Wheat-pasted poster on table. © JR-ART.NET
On October 8, 2017, for the last day of the Kikito installation at the U.S.-Mexico border, JR organized a gigantic picnic on both sides of the wall. Kikito, his family, and dozens of guests came from the United States and Mexico to share a meal.
People at both sides of the border gathered around the eyes of Mayra, a “Dreamer,” eating the same food, sharing the same water, and enjoying the same live music (with half the band’s musicians playing on either side).
Tumblr media
In 2016 JR returned once again to Clichy-Montfermeil with the filmmaker Ladj Ly to photograph more than 750 people from the Parisian suburb in order to create a large-scale mural, inspired by the work of the Mexican painter Diego Rivera.
In 2017, the mural was installed at Les Bosquets. Here the work is shown as a large-scale transparency print in a lightbox.
In early 2020, JR started teaching a course titled “Art and Image,” at the École Kourtrajmé, a film school in the neighborhood founded by Ladj Ly.
Tumblr media

Commissioned by Time magazine for its cover on November 5, 2018, this video mural visualizes a spectrum of views on guns in the United States through collaged portraits of 245 individuals, including gun collectors, hunters, law enforcement officials, shooting victims, emergency room teams that treat victims of mass shootings, and gun industry lobbyists.
Participants were invited to share their individual views, describe their own experiences, and search for common ground; their accounts are accessible on the project's website.
Tumblr media
At the center of the exhibition is JR’s new monumental mural project, The Chronicles of New York City (2019). In the summer of 2018, JR and his team spent a month roaming all five boroughs of New York City, parking their 53-foot-long trailer truck in numerous locations and taking photographs of passersby who wished to participate.
Tumblr media

Each of the 1,128 participants was photographed in front of a green screen, and then the images were collaged into a New York City setting featuring architectural landmarks.
The participants chose how they personally wanted to be represented and were asked to share audio recordings of their stories, which are now available on a free mobile app.
In keeping with the public and collaborative nature of JR’s art, the museum partnered with organizations in Brooklyn to install murals throughout the burough.

Here's an Endgame fix-it I would love but don't have the patience to write.
So, Steve goes back in time. Everybody's all pissed because its so out of character, and why is Peggy worth more than Tony or Bucky, all that. But, hear me out.
Steve goes back and the first thing he does is find Peggy and Howard. Convince them its really him, somehow get them to believe the time travel nonsense, all that. They play it up like he survived the crash and found his way home because it's only been like, a week, if that, since the Valkryie went down.
Steve gets Howard and Peggy to help him look for Bucky. He has a vague idea of where he should be at this point, but no solid details, so it takes a little while. This derails any interest Howard had in the Manhattan Project, especially since Steve is Very Vocal about his hatred of the idea.
(Now, I dont have the knowledge to even begin to theorize what would have happened in a reality where Steve Rogers was around to Loudly and Publicly as Captain America declare his disapproval of something as huge and significant as the Manhattan Project. For the sake of my brain, we are going to say that they met a lot more resistance than they otherwise would have, but it still happened because the American Government is awful.)
They find Bucky within a few years of Steve's crash and survival. Obviously he's still all kinds of fucked up because of torture, experimentation, cryo, etc. But 5-6 years is a whole he'll of a lot different than 70+. Shield still gets built, honestly Steve couldn't imagine it with any other name, but Bucky's return reveals that Hydra is still around and that Operation Paperclip was a bad idea (Zola). So they clean house early. Peggy becomes Director because Howard is to busy with his tech, and Steve and Bucky both said no. They do work for the newly built Shield though, running ops and hunting Hydra. They also might as well be married. Its still illegal for the time, so they're careful, but all the people who matter to them know and none of them care that the Captain and his Sargeant are doing the horizontal mambo.
Steve was friends with Tony, even if it didn't work out that well. And for all their differences, well earned and understandable, Tony and Howard had a lot more in common than Tony would ever want to admit. So Steve learns from the mistakes he made with Tony, and keeps Howard from turning into the monster he was in Tony's memories.
He mother hen's Howard into drinking less, drags him out to socialize more(Bucky is a huge help with that), calls him out when he's being a dick, and puts him in his place when his ego, or his head, gets too big for his britches.
Howard gets Steve to actually sell his art, builds him neat gadgets and armor, teases him to no end about Bucky, and is consistently endangering both of their lives on his never ending quest to get Steve drunk. (Bucky might have more sense than both of them, but he's also an adrenaline junkie with a hard-on for mechanical anything, so he is no help whatsoever and Peggy constantly despaired that the fate of the world lies with these overgrown children.)
When Howard marries Maria, Steve stands up for him at the wedding. The first time Howard made Maria cry because he ignored her/forgot something important/said something mean without meaning too, Steve beat him over the head and gave him a Captain America lecture, made Howard bake an apology cake himself, then dragged Howard back to Stark manner to apologize. The second time it happened, Bucky showed up in whatever place Howard had fallen asleep, dressed in full combat gear, cussed him out in Russian and threatened to shoot him. The third and last time it happened, Peggy showed up in Howard's lab, had him tied up before he even new she was there, and calmly informed him of exactly how she would torture him into a slow and agonizing death, as well as how exactly, she would get away with it.
Howard still forgot things, and could be careless with his time, but they never let him get bad, never let him forget how much he Did Not deserve Maria. And when Tony was born they were there for him. Steve refused to let Howard ignore his son, dragged him (figuratively) the first time Howard showed any sign of jealousy towards Tony. It wasn't perfect, nothing could be. But this Tony would grow up with a bumbling inventor of a father who was only forgetful and easily distracted, rather than an alcholic with a mean streak. He would have a mother who wasn't afraid of her husband and would love him even if she didn't always understand him.
He would have a godfather, his Uncle Steve, who would teach him to fight, to stand up for what was right no matter what, who would play games with him, paint with him, love him.
He would have his Uncle Bucky, who would share his interest in all things mechanical, would listen to music with him, take apart and build machines with him, teach him dirty jokes and play pranks on his Dad or Uncle Steve, who would listen to all of his ideas and tell him he could do anything.
He would have his godmother, Aunt Peggy, who would teach him how to play the game that is high society, would teach him how to charm the socks (rather pants) off of anyone, male, female, or otherwise, who would help him when emotions got to difficult, or people didn't make sense the way he thought they should.
Steve would find the others too. Phil did alright on his own, but everyone else...
Shield would be looking for the Red Room from the start. Maybe they find Natasha as a child, or a teenager, but they would find her, because Steve would want to save her after all the times she saved him. She would get placed with a loving family, probably a shield agent and their spouse. She would have therapy, but even a couple of years with the Red Room would mess her up. She would eventually end up an agent herself, still the Black Widow, just a little less damaged. A hero because she wants to be, knows what it means to be saved by one, rather than a way to repent and repay the lives that she took.
They would find Clint probably around the time Barney and Trickshot turned on him, before he had a chance to start on his mercenary career. Therapy, maybe a shield agent foster parent for a year or two depending on his age. They would make no secret about recruiting him, but he would jump at it. Nat would probably already be there, and nothing would stop that friendship. Coulson is probably a few years ahead of them, though not many, and if there is anyone who could reign in Hawkeye, even a slightly less damaged version, it would be Phil Coulson.
Tony meets Bruce. Howard takes Steve's admittedly limited knowledge of Bruce's past and tracks down the kid. Creates a scholarship to get him to a private school and away from his dad. They meet at a Stark expo in their early teens and immediately hit it off. Bruce is one of the only people who can keep up with Tony's genius. When Tony ends up at MIT (sometime between the ages of 14-16) Bruce ends up at Harvard. They share an apartment, because the dorms would have been a disastrous idea. Steve and Bucky live with them because they might be super geniuses but you can't send two teenagers to live alone in another city Howard! Especially not when they have access to dangerous and/or explosive chemicals/tech!
Likely, Howard will still die at some point, probably from all the liquor. Fury will probably still end up as Shield's director because neither Steve or Bucky will want the responsibility. Tony will take over SI, but will still eventually hire Pepper, and eventually promote her, because running a company is never going to be his thing.
Bruce will probably still end up at Culver with Betty, if only because he's actually halfway decent at the whole teacher thing, and the Hulk incident will likely still happen one way or another. Having Steve Rogers alive would not stop men like Ross from wanting the serum. Instead of disappearing for years on end, He'll end up in Tony's tower in NYC. Tony will likely still be kidnapped, though he probably would not have the Obadiah Stane factor involved, and would still end up as Iron Man.
They would "find" the Steve still frozen and thaw him out around that time. Play it off like they found someone for Old Steve to pass the mantle onto. Give Young Steve a new identity, and a family in Old Steve and Bucky.
Young Steve would make friends with Tony, would have time to grieve his lost world without an alien invasion. Would move into the tower and mother hen Tony the way Old Steve used to do to Howard. Tony would not have all the Cap resentment he did in the original timeline, so he would get to know Young Steve as just Steve. Would be able to see him as an entirely seperate person from his godfather, because they are two separate people. Young Steve and Tony would fall in love.
Even if they weren't running it Old Steve and Bucky would still have a hand in Shiled. Would keep an eye on Natasha and Clint. They would have likely met Tony, Bruce, and Young Steve. So when the Chitauri roll in, the only one that wouldn't already be a part of the group is Thor and he fits in seamlessly. Coulson might still get hurt, but Fury wouldn't have to fake his death, because the Avengers would have been a team years before they were needed.
And when the time came to face Thanos again, they would do it as a united front, and they would win. Because together, they are unstoppable.

Play Ball! It’s time for an eSports baseball league!
Last month, another successful segment of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or better known as E3, was held in Los Angeles. The trade event is known for its wide display of video games from industries all over the world. The three days that separate each event gives every major gaming company and studios the opportunity to display new products and games that will be featured as early as the holiday season for gamers to purchase and play. In the recent years of E3, there has also been more focus on the future of competitive play in eSports. The growing momentum of eSports is moving quickly and is about to hit its pinnacle with the amount of competition available for gamers to play in. E3 capitalized on this feature in order to bring their gaming audience up to speed on what is yet to come in the future of major competition.
Tumblr media
The grand lobby of this year’s E3.
The transition where this meets video games that features competition for sports games are reaching a new group of audiences everywhere that brings “stat nerds” to a whole new meaning. The largest eSports competition for any major sport is association football (or often called soccer) through EA Sports’ popular title FIFA and holds, more competitions than any other sport video game on the market. Amongst the other popular brands from the EA studio, the tournaments for hockey and football were just created within this past year for NHL Hockey and Madden NFL. The studios of 2K Sports are responsible for the hit title of the same name for the NBA, and started their own league for players from different cities with NBA franchises to compete against each other. It will not be long before 2K can follow through with contributing with the variety of tournaments designed for fighting games with their partnership with WWE 2K titles. The visionaries for all of these sports video games and competitive leagues have pushed the envelope by changing the diversity of sports fans and having them contribute to the passion of each individual cultures, but there is one specific league and video game franchise being left out of this eSport movement: Sony’s MLB: The Show
The Show has been the dominating baseball game on the video market for over a decade since being introduced by Playstation in 2006. Despite the game being a major hit for the MLB, it seems to lack a major following in any competitive nature. To make matters even worse, there is no eSports league or any competition that is for MLB The Show domestically or internationally. In a time where baseball continues to be criticized for its lack of audience, the MLB could be taking advantage of this new movement of an audience by inserting their product into the eSport market.
MLB: The Show is not the only baseball game in the video game market. It is known that the MLB is not the only country that recognizes baseball as a national sport. In countries like Japan and South Korea, their leagues are just as popular and known like they are here in the US. They also have their own version of a baseball video game called Power Pros (Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū). The game is designed specifically in Japan and for the NPL; however it includes the teams of leagues from KBO so that Korean baseball fans can play with their favorite teams as well. This game is designed perfectly for the Asian-baseball market, but it is not like any other sports game. In parody, the game is designed to be more of a child’s game that uses avatars that are deformed versions of the players in real life. In a game that is not taken so seriously, it is far more difficult to make eSport competition from this game series. Even more of a bigger conflict, the Asian eSport gaming community has the largest population of players that compete.
Tumblr media
MLB: The Show, Power Pros, and RBI Baseball would be popular titles to start an eSports league for baseball.
Virtual reality has always been a dream of video game companies, and they would like it to be in almost every home like their consoles over the decades. It is only a matter of time where they are in every home and gamers all over are living life like the film Ready Player One. Even at visits to ballparks, virtual reality has made its way in some sections that feature the idea of a simulation where patrons can swing for the fences. This concept can be sold to virtual reality enhancers like for Sony’s PlayStation to improve The Show or the new competing feature of the Oculus Rift and actually make a baseball game that puts you in the same scenarios as most players. If the future of gaming is to get more interaction from players, perhaps eSports will drive the direction to include full body simulation for players to feature themselves on actual teams of playing on a simulated baseball field for competitive play. This, in a way, would eventually give players the ability to play an actual baseball game with their features to be enhanced to play as any professional athlete. This in turn could be a breaking point of actually bringing more attention to baseball, or harm it if it becomes more competitive than any professional baseball league. Of course, baseball would not be the only sport that will suffer; this concept would be possible for any professional sport that would be offered in virtual reality. Talk about an episode straight out of Black Mirror.
Tumblr media
The popularity of the hit film Ready Player One has led video game companies to be more assertive in virtual reality.
A concept that would be able to take advantage of this situation is the Olympic Summer games that are being held in Tokyo in 2020. It will also be the return of baseball in the summer games since the sport was removed in 2008, and because Japan recognizes it as a national sport. It would be more in gracious recognition that eSports be recognized at the coming games as well. However, the International Olympic Committee due to certain regulations did not pass it in time. Instead, there will be an international gaming tournament being held in Tokyo during the same time as the Olympics. It would be more than superb if those international gamers coming to participate played the games designed for Japan. It would be more than extraordinary to have both sports collide and have the eSports christen the first international competition for a baseball videogame. In this circumstance, the tournament held would have to honor both MLB The Show and Power Pros so that there is no segregated completion restrictions on any of the players looking to compete. If this were a competition that would be a success, it would take a gaming company such as Sony to take more affirmative action to make the future of baseball gaming more diverse.
Since Sony Interactive Entertainment is responsible for making MLB The Show, it would be even more critical if they staged a model like EA’s FIFA series. If there were a better partnership between the International Baseball Federation and MLB with its player association, there would be fewer restrictions on allowing more teams to be used by a video game company in a single program. The more teams to be used would be unlimited from not only the leagues domestically, but internationally as well. What would be the grand incentive behind that would be the access to the international teams that play baseball for the World Baseball Classic. As an international pool recognizes the wider range of baseball fan ship, the chances of online and interactive gaming would also grow. If the chain of events all lead to success, the chances of making an eSports league would be structured like the 2K League and international influence of the FIFA competitions that are held in other countries. Restrictions should be broken down if this comes to a different studio to make the game. RBI Baseball is a video game fully supported by the MLB and has no limit to the amount of platforms that are accessible for gamers, it would be in their advantage to actually start on this project than Sony would have.
Tumblr media
The sponsors behind the WBC could create a video game that would rival MLB: The Show and grow in more popularity with an eSports league internationally.
Surely, the influence of an eSports league for baseball would push the boundaries for baseball to grow even further. The benefit of learning about the variety of different leagues and players would expand the diplomacy of the game. The potential of the WBC still has a great period of time before it becomes at an even level with the popularity that is the FIFA World Cup. However, with some inspiration, an eSport competition could bring more players of nationality to represent their countries and become ambassadors of baseball on their own terms. Another opportunity that this would drive due to the idea that baseball is a game of strategy of statistics is the inspiration that would build towards fantasy baseball. The idea to build teams to win in the best statistical fashion is strategy that would go hand-in-hand with someone who is competing heavily in a baseball video game. Surely, the adaptation of multiple fantasy baseball formats for leagues domestically and internationally would build more of an international audience of baseball. The collective of everything in competition would help influence the future of baseball fans and individuals who seek to find professional work in baseball as a potential career.
Tumblr media
With the rising popularity of eSports, it is time for a league to represent baseball in video games.
Essentially, the idea of eSport in baseball is an idea that would not only bring more fans into the sport, but is a concept that would “save baseball.” It is critical not only for the MLB to drive for a new audience outside the current one they are already catering towards, but to finding new consumers of the game on a yearly basis. Video games have always been an interaction that the younger generation are always been attracted to, and handful of big major companies have always pushed major franchises to make their product even more entertaining with interactive play. The idea of an eSport league for baseball could possibly break down obstacles that MLB and other leagues seem to be having a hard time struggling with in the current era. If the success from eSports in other league continues to gain more momentum, it would be in baseball’s favor to highly get behind immediately. The future has always been now when it comes to technology and video games has always been right beside that movement when it comes to entertainment. It is time for baseball to make that partnership with the video game world and eSports competitive play, for the love of the game.

CGX Ottawa 2018 Recap!
My perspective and expectations
I'm a self-taught Game Developer / Programmer with the intention of attending this conference to learn as much as possible about the industry from people who are actually in it, and to use this information to build on my portfolio and help align my career trajectory. In short, to learn lots and get a job! So, my experience at CGX Ottawa is going to be a little different than that of a presenter or your run of the mill gamer. It might also be important to mention this was my very first conference/convention of any kind.
 Hitting the expo floor early…
When I arrived at the conference first thing Saturday morning I was ready to go. I had a Masterclass with Nathan Pringle on "A Beginner's guide to video game neural networks" which is a subject I've been very interested in diving into, but never really had the time or opportunity. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances and in no fault of CGX the class was canceled. I caught the tail end of Celia Hodent's talk entitled "Developing a UX mindset on Fortnite" which was really interesting and by the end I was ready to hit the expo floor. As a self-taught developer in a city that has an almost non-existent scene it wasn't hard to realize I was missing out on some of the benefits of being in a social environment with like-minded individuals. The entire 2 hours I spent in the expo I felt like I was in my element. I made some real connections with other game devs and it really primed me for the rest of the conference.
 Connect Café
I was the most excited for this event, and the most nervous. Although I did make some meaningful connections I felt more like it was a means to learn what is required for entry into the industry of AAA games. It was great to get some of my work in front of industry professionals, receive some helpful and encouraging feedback on my portfolio, and I took away a list of things I need to work on as well as a couple things I need to change entirely.
 Portfolios
You don't need to limit your entries to 3 games.
As a programmer it's best to submit games where you had you're hands on just about every aspect of the engine (audio implementation, animation, AI, etc).
Provide small (1-2 classes) high quality examples of your code.
Provide easily accessible video footage of your games.
Most AAA companies are looking for people with Unreal Engine experience and strong C++ skills. I had the chance to speak to someone working with EA/Frostbite and was surprised to hear they have a similar visual scripting component in Frostbite for quick basic implementations and prototyping. So, it seems a pivot from Unity/C# to Unreal/C++ is in order for me.
 Concerns
As much as I loved all the information I was able to gather from this event I have to say it was not at all what I imagined. The reps had no sign at their table to indicate studio name/positions available which led people to believe anyone sitting at a table was a rep (not the case). This led to artists waiting for a chance to speak to a rep only hiring programmers and vice versa. The chaos of people scrambling to try to speak to an industry professional meant time wasted. It felt like we were sharks circling prey. I understand the difficulties of organizing events like this but it could have only been beneficial for both the reps and the attendees if something was put in place to identify the reps and positions, as well as something as simple as a ticket system to add order to the chaos.
 Scrum Masterclass
Sherri Flemings hosted this Masterclass. As someone who has not been working in the industry in an official capacity this was invaluable to me. Look forward to a separate post on this in the future. :)
 Party at Atari
End of Day 1 at CGX and now it's time to head to the party. This is an excellent opportunity to chat with people I met throughout the day in a more casual setting. I really enjoyed learning more about what people are working on and meeting some new developers and streamers. There was a lot of business card trading.
 UI and Cognitive Science Masterclass
Celia Hodent hosted this Masterclass. It was crammed with really useful information on UX and how it relates to the human brain. Again, another post is coming to talk more about this one.
 Funding Lounge
This was an interesting event to attend. I wanted to get an idea of what kind of programs were available for developers to assist with funding and what the requirements were. Kitfox games was also there giving advice on how to pitch your game to publishers which was really useful. If you live in Canada then the Canadian Media Fund has some experimental programs for assisting game companies that are currently developing a game with production costs and marketing costs. Very exciting stuff!
 Mentor Lounge
For me, the mentor lounge was very similar to the Connect Café. I used it to learn as much as possible about the AAA industry and what I needed to do to get into the industry. Again, this is from the perspective of a self-taught developer so I can't say what kind of courses you should take or what university you should attend but the portfolio information I mentioned earlier is really the key to getting into any studio.
 Concerns
This was a little more organized than the Connect Café but the setup was a little misleading. Before the conference started I was provided with a registration form for the mentor lounge. It was designed to provide them with the information needed to pair me up with mentors who would best suit me as a programmer/developer. However, when I arrived it was the same format as Connect Café. Just walk in and sit somewhere and talk to someone. Thankfully they had signs this time so that helped. There was supposed to be a time limit enforced to ensure everyone had a chance to speak to as many people as possible but that was pretty hit or miss. Again, I feel like I gathered so much information at this event, but I know it would have been more beneficial if it was more organized.
 Wrapping Up
After leaving the Mentor Lounge I grabbed a bite and retired to my room. I poured the business cards out of my bag and made sure I connected with people on at least one social media network. I met a lot of great people with great ideas and games and I plan on staying in touch with all of them! :D
 What I wish I had time for…
First, the expo. Talking to developers who are excited about their game is… exciting!! Talking shop isn't something that I get to do much so getting to talk to people in person like that was just an amazing experience. I left CGX feeling physically exhausted but mentally refreshed and re-energized. It was fantastic, so I wish I could have played more games and spoke with more developers.
Second… so many awesome talks (In no particular order).
Cuphead - The Creative Process and 2D animation - Tina Nawrocki
Creative Direction for Small Teams - Tanya X. Short
Concept Design, World Building for triple A - Abe Taraky
Level Design: Getting Started - Travis The Evolution of Warframe: 5 years of Continuous Iteration - Jim Leedham
How to leverage government funding programs - Mark Allice
Who do you know? - Mike Mood & Jon Keon
Etc.. Etc….
 Conclusion
I'll be posting full writeups on the master classes I attended as soon as possible. I'd like to thank everybody at the Mood Foundation who put this conference together and I'm VERY much looking forward to the next one. I hope any nobody takes offense to the criticisms I included in this post and know I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to attend. Anyone who's interested in game development, go to these. They are awesome!!

The adventures of Calvarine and Hayley’s “GIRLS TRIPPPPP!!!!!"
Johannesburg: affectionately known as the “City of Gold”, a place where risk-takers and money-makers come to witness their dreams grow into fruition. I love this city: the rush, the adrenaline, the swiftness and feisty attitudes of people. There’s just so much hustle in the air, or maybe in the water? Regardless, living in this place requires thick skin, a thicker bank account, a full tank of petrol - cos’ traffic…
My extremely close friend, Hayley, momentarily come up with an idea to visit Johannesburg for a quick weekend Girls Trip. After watching Girls Trip together, it kinda accelerated the thought of us having a super chilled weekend plus we have never travelled together, anywhere!!
History: Hayley and I have been friends since grade 8. 12 years down; we are still the closest of friends and surprisingly still have the same goofy conversations that we did at 13. This friend of mine is a High flyer, sports science Honours graduate, has traveled overseas, has her own medical practice, rocks a 6 pack of abs and still maintains relationships with friends, family and her boyfriend. She’s one of those girls who can do anything. I look like a complete blob next to her #Lol.
Hayley, being the Type-A smarty pants, arranged our travel itinerary for the weekend including Flights and Accommodation. I was so excited and grateful for her effort in the entire process. We set flight on 3rd November 2017, a parching hot summers day, from Durban to Johannesburg. Throughout the entire buildup, I would constantly quote phrases for Girls Trip especially the lines from Tiffany Haddish (my new favorite actress) especially because I found it hilarious.
We arrived at OR Tambo Airport around 9h30. Hayley’s cousin, who also happened to graciously be our chauffeur for the weekend, was punctually awaiting our arrival at the pick up zone. Our intentions from the outset was to have fun and create spontaneous memories. Nothing pedantically over planned, no deadlines, just fun. I personally have never done something so daring. Being 25 and having experienced so little in life, I grabbed upon the opportunity to just live, even if it just meant for one weekend.
We drove straight to the Mall of Africa, a place I’ve been wanting to see. After scoffing down a brunchy meal, we proceeded to look around. I was totally in my element looking at all the designer stores with fashion I’ll probably never afford. Besides, I’m not a girl who is obsessed with a label. I also happened to have my first “Starbucks Experience”, a chocochinni frappachino covered in whipped cream. However, I was unimpressed with the waiter who asked me to SPELL MY NAME?! Do they realize they work for Starbucks. Have they noticed that people come there for the fun of guessing if their names get spelt properly?! Side note: urgent HR intervention and staff training is needed at this branch.
We also visited my 2nd favourite shop, TYPO, which is a cute, artsy vibey shop. Time flew and soon, messages from family members started to trickle in asking about our whereabouts. We headed straight to The Barron which looked like a relaxed, white-collared, Friday afternoon location where people sat with their loosened ties and drank Castle Lager. It was cool. Sundowners after a hectic week sounds tempting. We decided to drive to our accommodation only to realize it is peak traffic at 13:00. I’m assuming a lot of people leave work at this time. Traffic was ridiculous. We were entangled with taxis, school transport and working class people, all rushing to the excitement of the weekend.
We arrived at our accommodation (47 on Preston) precisely at 14:00 and checked into our neatly prepared, air conditioned, wifi-zoned room with a stunning pool and views to match. The area was called Highlands North and the houses were impressive. Security was priority for us hence, the 24hr access controlled body guard, secure features and boom gates gave us peace of mind.
Our sweet ‘chaperone’ (Hayley’s Cousin) ensured we had snacks and liquor at our disposal. Skyy Vodka, Savannah and Amstel were on the menu. After chilling and catching up, we had to plan the night. I am unfamiliar with the night life of Johannesburg. We started getting ready and in the midst of it all, another cousin decided to visit us and show us around after all It’s an Indian thing to stick together. This particular cousin was weird. He was soft spoken, very proud, a straight A student, forensic scientist and quite an opinionated person. I am certainly not accustomed to this type of behavior. We didn’t get off to a great start. I’m all for successful people but not the proud ones. I’d like to think that I’m a cool, chilled and open-minded person. I’m always telling people “Don’t Judge” and this was an appropriate time to take my own advice!!
He brought through a bottle of caramel vodka and sipped. Funny thing is, this guy continued to drop hints the entire night of how intelligent, successful and opulent he is. The car he drives, the area he stays, the alumni he belongs to and his career, which is prospering at an exponential rate. Luckily Hayley informed me about this dude. Nothing serious, she just told me don’t worry, he is different from the average guy.
This dude was slightly tipsy at the arrival of our uber cab. I was controlling the Aux cord playing my “fresher than” music. They were not impressed. Seems like these freaking people don’t like Nas and Vic Mensa! Are you even my friends? Ha ha. We arrive at monte casino, a nightlife spot in Johannesburg, suggested by this cousin. I was actually warming up to him and started to laugh at his jokes. Please don’t any ideas. He has a spouse and over-saturated metrosexual tendencies. Definitely not my type.
The night got funnier. We ate and thereafter entered a place called “3sixty liquid lounge” which has a brilliant live band and serves cocktails, cute baby pink and blue candy floss shooters, bubblegum flavored liqueurs served in test tubes and other unconventional drinks. I loved it. Vibe was cool, we were probably the youngest group of people there, nevertheless, I am a huge fan of Earth Wind Fire and Bruno Mars. We took a quick walk around the casino to my disappointing bewilderment, people were gambling and it was almost 1 am. I hate gambling so I wasn’t pleased to witness people losing their entire salaries on a table. The ride home was hilarious. We got to bond with the weirdo. It was banter the entire night. I wasn’t holding back, neither was he. Safely reached home, thankfully to uber (that driver was relived to drop us). Liquor usually fuels deep thinking so the conversation of religion came up. Uh-oh!
We sat for over 2 hours conversing about religion and there is no decent, happy way to end this conversation without someone getting offended. Throughout the discussion, I was quite level minded and reminded that my Faith is for me, it works for me and I don’t have to justify it. I was also reminded that the essence of a religion is to have faith in God, that’s the basis of Christianity. So when someone wants hardcore facts, times, places and dates - especially when they have a debilitating hatred for Christianity, I will not be intimidated and cross questioned by someone who is out to make a point rather than seeking to understand. Here we are in a very familiar scenario: Christians vs Hindus. The answers were flying back and forth. Eventually we all agreed to disagree and by this time, the dried sweat started to irritate my skin. They gang was getting ready for bed and the proud cousin who earlier asked why we are staying in this place eventually ended up sleeping in one of the beds.
Funny story: earlier that day, we found banana flavored condoms in the room and wanted to prank Hayley’s 'cool’ cousin. We even dispensed some droplets of handwash in order to make it seem like it was used. Yuck! We slipped it under the covers and pretended like nothing happened.
Fast forward to later that evening, well it was early hours of the morning, proud cousin decided to sleep in the bed which had the condom. I was only just informed that he is a germaphobe. He felt the slippery substance and sprang out of bed like a cat in water! It was hilarious. Shortly after that, everyone passed out from pure exhaustion.
Saturday morning started off great. We were treated to an in-house breakfast prepared by the Muslim hostess and then proceeded to the Rosebank Mall. En route, I was speechless at the upper echelon of Johannesburg. The buildings, the infrastructure, the complex designs and luxurious apartments. For a split second you even ask yourself, is this South Africa? Are we even in a recession? Rosebank mall was super cool. From Hamleys to Krispy Kremes, we waltzed our way to almost all the stores and I was majorly impressed.
Our next stop was Melose Arch. I was levitating. I had never been to this place and always heard about it on TV/Radio. We approached the entrance of Melrose arch with Lambourguinis, Porshe, Ferrari, limousines and various other exotic cars parked inside. Funny thing, it wasn’t even a car expo. These were normal patrons who happened to be in this place. Once again, I’m thinking “is this really Johannesburg?! This feels like a foreign place.”. Melrose Arch has various luxury shops, amazing restaurants and beautiful cobble stoned pave ways decorated with Vespas to create an Italian feel.
Jamie’s Italian, founded by the talented chef Jamie Oliver, is an awesome 4/5 star restaurant. I’m a sucker for comfort food so I ordered a gigantic burger layered with different cheeses, sautéd onions, crisp lettuce and holonaise sauce with Parmesan drizzled fries and a refreshing signature Jamie Mojito. We strolled for a bit and went back to 47 on Preston to catch a breather and of course, prepare for our last night in Joburg.
We utilized the convenient services of Uber that weekend and through that, got to see the growth and splendor of our country’s golden city. There are construction sites everywhere possible. Infrastructure and renovations are booming. At the same time, we saw beggars at robots, extremely poor laborers, mostly from other African countries working for minimal wages. It was such a skewed representation. On one hand, we have bugattis and rolls royces lining the street and on the other, we have people digging in bins and hanging out of trains because of their poverty. Mind you, this was one road away of each other. I couldn’t fathom it. It was confusing. Once agin, you’re challenged to think, what are we doing wrong? Are the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer. How do we stabilize this situation. For some of us, growing up in disadvantaged communities affects in many ways. When you do well in life, you almost carry a sense of guilt for doing well and feeling sorry for people who have not achieved anything. Must you apologize for your success? Must you feel unworthy of getting a golden ticket just because your peers lacked drive to hustle?
Saturday night was about to go down. We were scheduled to meet some of their cousins on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst, cited as Joburgs version of Florida Road. We did a small pub crawl before settling into a local sports bar. We befriended 2 sisters sitting besides us. They were so sweet and shared their hookah with us. The drinks kept rolling, including my signature drink; 1 Smirnoff storm and 1 tot of Aftershock. It’s light, pink and tasty. Jäger bombs are always compulsory. Me and my greedy self got way ahead of the party and started twisping, experimenting with everyone’s flavors. Marshmallow, honey and red bull flavors mixed with alcohol and a hookah ended off in me wanting to puke. I felt bad for tainting the evening. We hopped into an uber cab and came home. With toothbrush in hand, I was determined to get sober asap, which I did! Straight to bed after a hot bath, we were ready to conquer the morning in high spirits seeing that it was also our last day of “Girls Trip”.
Sunday morning started off with a lovely breakfast. We packed up and proceeded to Rosebank mall which was my request. I needed to get my hands on some Krispy Kremes to bring back home. To kill time, we also attended this rooftop art and crafts market in the parking lot. I was so impressed with the variety and organization of this fete. It was beautiful and eccentric. Foods from every culture was sold, ethnic clothing and creative decor, eclectic jewelry and fashion - it was….. Different.
After obtaining my two dozen of Krispy Kremes, we headed out of Rosebank and straight to the Airport. We checked it with full luggage and a huge, embarrassingly box of 24 Krispy Kremes doughnuts. We thanked Hayley’s amazingly courteous and sweet cousin who gave us such a memorable time and boarded the flight.
In all, this was the best trip I’ve ever taken. No drama, no bickering, no anxiety, just pure fun. I’m was so appreciative of those 3 days and how my eyes got opened to a new way of life. It is vitally important to experience something different from your normal standard of living. Johannesburg is such a beast but contrives such beauty within its streets.
I had to share this memorable experience on my blog and even if it didn’t seem thrilling to you as you read, it meant the world to me. Here’s to more exciting experiences, spontaneous trips, everlasting friendships and ticking off the bucket list!!

Free Campus Services To Take Advantage Of
Tumblr media
Here at Southeast Missouri State University, we know academic success comes from your mental and physical well-being. To support you as you pursue your degree, your dreams, and more, we’ve implemented a network of support services designed specifically to aid you during your time at SEMO. Learn more about the services you should take advantage of in 2020.
Counseling and Disability Services
College can be stressful, but you don’t have to face it alone. In fact, we don’t want you to. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or otherwise, schedule an appointment with Counseling Services. With a staff comprised of licensed counselors and social workers, someone will be able to work with you during personal or social needs, as well as respond to crisis intervention when needed. Appointments are at no additional cost to students. Counseling Services also offers mental illness screenings, educational resources for students and families, and external referrals when needed.
SEMO is committed to eliminating barriers on campus for students with disabilities by providing equal access and opportunities for success. Oftentimes, however, accommodations are needed in the classroom. That’s where Disability Services steps in to provide you with the tools needed to excel in your classes. All you need to do is register with their office, and they’ll guide you from there.
University Tutorial Services
For academic assistance, seek out University Tutorial Services on campus. Make an appointment that fits the needs of your schedule, and work to make sure you don’t fall behind in your classes. Don’t wait until you’re falling behind to get tutoring! Start early and stay ahead of your material. The closer you are to mastering it, the better you’ll perform in this class and in your upper-level courses.
Center for Writing Excellence
If writing a paper isn’t your strong suit, stop by the Center for Writing Excellence, where writing tutors will work with you to understand the ways you can improve your writing and become a stronger writer in the future. You can submit your paper through Moodle as well, and you’ll be able to receive the feedback needed to compose a strong paper.
Mathematics Learning Center
There’s even a Mathematics Learning Center on campus for those who need assistance in their math classes. You don’t have to be a math major to take advantage of this service. Faculty, graduate assistants, and other students are there to help you and no appointments are necessary.
Redhawk Food Pantry
Created to supplement existing access to food, hygiene products, and school supplies, the Redhawk Food Pantry is here to ensure you’re well-fed and taken care of. There are plenty of things on your mind as a college student, but food insecurity shouldn’t be included in that list. Accessing the pantry is completely anonymous.
Career Services
We want to see you achieve great things in life, even after your time at SEMO has come to an end. To assist you in your professional endeavors, Career Services provides many tools for you to utilize. Throughout the year, take advantage of career workshops, the Career Expo, mock interviews, resume help, and more. You can also seek guidance on how to land internships, jobs, or prepare for graduate school.
Don’t forget to utilize one of their premier resources, RedhawkJobs, a platform of job and internship listings exclusively for SEMO students and alumni.
LGBTQ+ Resource Center
The LGBTQ+ Resource Center is designed to be a safe, comfortable, and confidential environment for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and allies to discuss different topics. The Center implements programs and additional resources on campus to raise awareness and promote inclusivity.
Military and Veterans Services
Consisting of a military-affiliated staff, the center for Military and Veterans Services is dedicated to providing resources, information, and other forms of support to veterans, military personnel, and their dependents during their time at Southeast. This includes everything from financing your education to understanding how the G.I. Bill works, and more.
Recreation Services
Don’t forget all students have access to the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on campus with their Redhawk ID. Here, you can use the weight room, a variety of cardio machines, take group fitness classes, join in on intramural sports clubs, swim laps, or just play a pick-up basketball game with your friends. Taking care of your physical health helps to care for your mental wellness and the programs at the SRC are endless.

Before April of 2019, I had never spoken at a technical conference or meetup before. By the end of June, I would have spoken five times on various Serverless Subjects. It was an insane period of growth. One might call it a Serverless Spring! Given the opportunity, I would do each event again and recommend them for most people.
Tumblr media
APITheDocs
Gateways to Gateways: API Development in the Cloud
Date: April 19, 2019 Target Audience: Technical Writers View Slides on Provonix
This was a one-day, single track conference about API Development and documentation. As a spin-off from WriteTheDocs, the focus was API Documentation and Developer portals. It took place at the American Writers Museum which was a surreal, magical experience. The conference was well staffed and organized as well as centrally located. Even with Conference Sandwiches, the meal was included and had vegetarian options. I’m not a vegetarian myself, but I know how difficult it can be without them. It was also small enough that it was easy to mingle with speakers and staff so networking was pretty frictionless.
I found my talk which focused on Cloud Native API Development to be too technical for a majority of the audience. Most focused on the user experience of API Documentation, while my experience lent most to understanding how they worked and what was important to understand for handover and internal developer documentation. Still, as a developer and not a technical writer, I still found a lot of the content useful. Knowing what technical documentation is expecting helps with communication to other teams and informs the way APIs are designed. Also, they record all presentations and had them up in a timely manner, so others can hear you speak along with your slides. If you can submit to it, I highly suggest it!

  AWS Summit Chicago
Serverless ETLs Three Ways
Date: May 26, 2019 Target Audience: AWS Developers View Slides on Slides.com
This was a one-day summit put on by AWS. Like any AWS Event, it was a long, wild experience. It was held at McCormick Place Convention Center, which is one of the easiest places to get to in Chicago. Unfortunately, while food was provided, it was not possible to handle the droves of attendees and it ran out almost immediately. There was also no easy fall-back plan for food as there’s no options adjacent to the Convention Center.
Outside of the expo floor, the breakout rooms were both clever and off-putting. They used the main keynote room, which was smart, and broke it up into six sections. Then those sections were given color coded headphones so six presenters could share the big stage at a time. It was clever, but it also made sure if you had issues with strange headsets or you weren’t early enough to get a set of headphones, you couldn’t watch the talk. And then, it made between breakout talks not feasible.
My talk was the second slot in the Dev Lounge right at the start of lunch, which is a small stage in the middle of the Expo Floor. I reached a wide audience speaking about different implementations of Serverless ETLs and while I believe they was interest, the format did not lend to a lot of feedback or conversation afterwards. Also, it was impossible to record with the background noise. Still, as a speaker, there’s fewer venues where you can get as much exposure. So it’s still worth the experience.

  RevolutionConf
Traditionally Serverless
Date: June 7-8 Target Audience: Software Developers View Slides on Slides.com
This was a two-day multi-track conference at Virginia Beach and by far my favorite event this summer. As a participant and speaker, this conference really concentrated on the ability to engage others. It was easy to move in and out of sessions and breakouts. There was enough food for all of the attendees. Childcare was provided for a very reasonable fee. Speakers and staff were accessible over Slack and in person. Everyone was very open to conversation, either about their expertise or their observations of technology.
My talk was the last slot of the two days in a small breakout room, but I was still able to see and monitor all of the attendees for interest and engagement as I went over how to transition a traditional application skill set to a Serverless one. I was able to field questions and be heard clearly to the end of the room. Because of the environment of approachability, attendees who had established careers felt comfortable to discuss how to add it to their arsenal.
As it is an independent conference, it’s hard to say if it will return. However, conferences like this should absolutely be supported and if they wrote up their best practices for running such a conference, every other event should take note.

  AWS Midwest Community Day
Gateways to Gateways: API Development on AWS
Date: June 20, 2019 Target Audience: AWS Users View Slides on Slideshare.net
This was a one-day multi-track conference in Chicago which acted as a Meetup of Meetups, collecting the various ten local AWS User Groups. This was a great way to meet local businesses and users to talk about real life use cases of AWS. Here I met a few people from other technical communities such as Write/Speak/Code.
My talk was the last of the day in one of the breakout rooms, situated in a large auditorium style classroom. The talks targeted an intermediate skill level, while my talk which focused on AWS Services in API Development was more of a general overview. If I were to do it again for this audience, I would have used more specific implementations, such as serverless GraphQL or Websockets.
For a conference, it was very well run. There was a lot of people there from the various user groups so there was a lot of people meeting people from their own groups. I was also unfortunately drained from the previous other events so it was difficult to reach out to people.
  PearConf
Monitoring Serverless
Date: June 25, 2019 Target Audience: General Audience
This was a meetup, but I still included it for two reasons. First, it was literally within a week of AWS Midwest, so I wasn’t yet off the Spring Talk Circuit. Secondly, I really enjoyed it. The meetup was small, rounding out to about a dozen attendees and I anchored the three speakers. I spoke about Serverless Monitoring, but with it being a smaller crowd, only presented a first draft. Still I was able to have a lot of strong discussions about serverless architecture.
So that’s four (plus one) conferences of various sizes and content where I spoke about serverless. It was an intense ride, pushing me beyond the bound of my introvert limits at some points. Even if not at the same events, I would definitely do this kind of spree over again. I found I was usually the only one who looked like me on the speakers list. If there was another, there were no more than three. In the audience, there were way more than when I started in the industry. So hopefully seeing me in the lists will get more visibility and I’ll see that reflected in future audiences and colleagues. I also get to push serverless to crowds and get past most of the initial apprehension.
I still have two speaking slots left. If you’re in Chicago for ChiWITCon or New York for Serverless Conf and you aren’t done listening to me drone on about serverless, please drop by so I can go over it all over again!
I delivered talks about #Serverless Development at #apithedocs #awssummit #revconf & #awsmidwest! Before April of 2019, I had never spoken at a technical conference or meetup before. By the end of June, I would have spoken five times on various Serverless Subjects.
