Thank you!
1) where do you think class of 07 takes place? do you think the school is posh enough to pull people from different states or would they all pretty much be local?
2) what kind of beer is most associated with aussie rednecks (and is "bogan" dated slang)?
okay so
the show takes place in New South Wales. The co-ordinates that Zoe gives out on the Radio (south 34.4100, East 150.3037) show it to be south of Sydney, and about 1.5 hours drive away. Generally boarding schools cater to in-state kids, different states have different end of year exams and education standards, so I assume all the student, bar Sandi, lived in New South Wales for their whole childhood, however characters like Teresa have moved inter state; in her case to Queensland to live in Brisbane. Based on how close the town lights are in the first episode I assume there are also day school girls as well and boarders. So they would be largely state locals but from a mix of Rural and Urban backgrounds
Bogan is still used, generally it's a pretty broad term, more a reclaimed label rather than a pejorative imo. Beer wise there a lot of state pride in your local mass market beer(I live in Western Australia and my dad loves Emu Export). The common beer in NSW is Toohey's New.
feel free to ask any thing else that you want clarity on

Meet the actor set for stardom in 2024: Matthew Backer

Meet the actor set for stardom in 2024: Matthew Backer
Tumblr media
Brisbane’s own Matthew Backer chats to QNews about his career as an out gay actor, being a Play School presenter and his big year ahead.
Matthew has just flown in to visit family for the holidays and joins our video interview from his childhood bedroom.
He explains that his parents have turned it into a spare room, although they still have some posters of him on the wall.
It’s clear his parents are proud of his achievements and they have every reason to be.
Matthew’s rise as an actor and TV presenter has grown each year over the last decade and it feels he is on the precipice of something even bigger.
Matt grew up in Brisbane because of his dad’s rugby league career. His father, Bradley Backer, played for Easts and was in the first-ever State of Origin series for Queensland.
Other pursuits were Matt’s passions though.
“I went to an all-boys Catholic school in the 90s, enough said on that, but that’s where I found acting doing school musicals and plays,” he tells me.
Journalism
Despite his love of acting, his first career went down a different path.
He studied journalism at the University of Queensland and went on to become a cadet reporter at the Fraser Coast Chronicle in Maryborough.
Maryborough was his family’s home town and despite not living there he knew the place inside out as a regular visitor.
Although he loved the job and living with his grandparents, he started to feel it wasn’t the right path for him.
“I just constantly had that little voice going like ‘you should be acting’. So at the end of that cadetship, I was like It’s now or never. I just really wanted to audition for NIDA, so I came back to Brisbane for a year and did every amateur play you could think of and short films and promo work and then I auditioned.”
Matthew got into the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) on first go and then moved to Sydney for his new life as an actor.
Acting career
Matthew’s credits since then are extensive.
After landing his first professional gig as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys he went on to a substantial theatre career.
In 2016 he won a Matilda Award for Best Male Actor in Queensland Theatre’s production of Switzerland and a 2016 Broadway World Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Sydney Theatre Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
He hasn’t shied away from screen roles with credits in Wellmania, Five Bedrooms, A Place to Call Home and Home and Away to name just a few.
The versatility of roles and medium has helped shape the longevity of his career.
“You just gotta take what you can get, the industry is not big enough,” he says.
“Thankfully, I can act and I can sing and I can move well. So I tick a few boxes, which you have to be able to do in Australia. Otherwise, there’s just not enough arenas for you to play in. But thankfully, I’ve got many fingers in many pies.”

Queer representation
Being boxed in as a “gay actor” has been a frustrating experience for Matt at times, particularly early in his career when the roles he was typecast for were consistently going to his straight colleagues.
“Six, seven years ago, it was pretty much all straight actors playing gay roles and the gay roles were not even that developed. I think some of the soaps had two gay stalkers on there,” he says.
“I don’t subscribe to the belief that only gay actors should play gay characters. That’s not it at all, but when the seesaw is like this [he puts out his hands to symbolise unbalanced scales] we have to level it out a bit.”
However, since he first began acting he has seen a demonstrable difference in the industry.
“I’ve noticed much more developed interesting queer characters that are really exciting. My mate Tim Draxl just got nominated for two actor awards for playing two gay roles and he’s openly gay. Like, that was not happening when I graduated, there was no gay actor openly succeeding that you could go ‘cool, I can do it’, but it is changing,” he says.
Play School
  View this post on Instagram
A post shared by MATTHEW BACKER (@matthewbacker)
For all his thespian prowess, there’s one role he is probably best known for: Play School.
Matt became a presenter on the iconic program back in 2017.
“It’s just so fun. It’s so silly. I mean, it’s in the name. We just get to go in and play and be big kids, and I’m such a big kid,” he laughs.
He has also been part of the program as so many children in his life grow up with it.
“When I started, I had two nephews and they were like, in the right age bracket. So they’ve grown up with Uncle Matt on TV. Now I’ve got two more nephews and a little niece and so they’re all watching and my friends are having kids and I think I got it at the perfect time. It’s a reminder of how special it is, it’s like the funnest job I’ve ever had.”
With his exposure across so many different mediums, I ask him who recognises him the most. He says kids often spot him but he also gets approached out on the scene.
“I was at Mardi Gras, and you know, everyone’s dressed up and having a good old time and a lovely gay guy skipped up to me and pointed in my face and was like you’re on Play School and skipped off into the night!”
A big year ahead
2024 looks to be a big year for Matthew.
On January 18, the Stan series Prosper comes out where he stars alongside Richard Roxburgh and Rebecca Gibney which he describes as “his biggest TV role so far.”
The show has been described as Succession meets Hillsong drama series.
youtube
Also coming out during the year will be Die Bully Die.
The film is one that Matthew and his friend Drew Weston co-wrote and will star in together.
It’s a comedy horror that takes some inspiration from Matt’s experiences at that 90s Catholic school in Brisbane as well as an incident he had later in life at Tropical Fruits.
“I looked across the dance floor and saw one of my worst bullies and they’re shirtless and gay. It was fine, he came up and gave me a big hug, but I felt really angry and I didn’t show it. I remember thinking, gosh, there’s so much drama and conflict in what I felt because I was happy for him, but also really angry at him.”
“So we developed this idea, based around a character who maybe hasn’t let that go and is a little warped. Horror is my favourite genre, so we just made it a horror comedy. Hopefully, people love it, it’s it’s bloody entertaining.”
The film’s budget was crowdfunded and the pair are hoping to have it played in a number of festivals this year.
Matthew’s ability to be a chameleon throughout his career stands him in good stead.
He’s gone from journalist to theatre and screen actor, Play School presenter, and now film writer. All while fully embracing his queer identity.
There’s no doubt there is more to come in his career and the boy from Brisbane will continue to do his parents and his community proud.

Travel Assistance in Brisbane
Tumblr media
Travel assistance Brisbane can be provided in many ways including public transport, private vehicles and accommodation. These schemes are designed to help the most transport disadvantaged residents in NSW.
Patients wishing to stay in private accommodation may be eligible for an approved subsidy for each night of their stay. This is paid directly to the accommodation provider by the approving hospital or health facility. To know more about Travel Assistance Brisbane, visit the Maximum Support Services website or call 1300983885.
The PTSS helps eligible Queenslanders travel to access specialist medical treatment not available locally. It reimburses patients for their travel and accommodation expenses. It also provides for patient escort assistance where necessary.
The governance framework for PTSS has been the subject of several reviews and audits since 2010. However, improvements are still needed.
A disability pensioner from Blackwater regularly travels to Brisbane for specialist appointments. Each trip costs them approximately $300 for travel, accommodation and food. This has become a major burden on their budget. In addition, delays in receiving reimbursements have been causing financial stress. This has resulted in this patient having to choose between groceries and trips to Brisbane.
The Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) is a NSW Government scheme that provides financial assistance for people who need to travel long distances for specialist treatment. This includes travel and accommodation expenses, as well as a living away allowance.
A person who is travelling interstate to see an authorised medical specialist can claim up to 75 per night for non-commercial accommodation and 40c per kilometre for private vehicle travel. The IPTAAS subsidy amounts have recently been increased to give more people access to life-saving treatment. This is great news for people in regional communities. It also means that more people with complex health needs can travel for essential treatment.
School transport assistance is a grant towards the cost of private bus or ferry travel for eligible students. It is based on the distance between your child’s home and the nearest state school of their chosen type. See the Specialised School Transport Assistance page for more information about eligibility.
It’s worth checking that your child qualifies before applying. If you’re unsure, ask your child’s school for advice. A conveyance allowance may also be available to help you as a parent/carer pay for your own car or van. See the Conveyance Allowance page for more details.
Eligible seniors can enjoy cost-of-living concessions across a wide range of goods and services by getting a free Queensland Seniors Card, Seniors Card +go or Seniors Business Discount Card. These cards offer discounts and offers on a wide variety of goods and services including holidays, travel, hospitality, automotive services and household needs.
You can also get a Gold Opal Card to access transport discounts on the Queensland TransLink network. You can find more information on eligibility and how to apply on the Queensland Government’s website.
There is a single application process for all three card types, and you will be issued with the one that best suits your eligibility.
Providing free travel on all TransLink bus, train and ferries services including regional qconnect and ferry services for eligible Queenslanders with severe disability. The Access Pass also subsidises taxi travel and lift payments.
Managing one of the largest integrated public transport networks in Australia, TransLink delivers bus, train and ferry services across a 10 000 square kilometre region that includes Brisbane City Centre, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich. This network supports the social and economic wellbeing of the diverse local communities in South East Queensland.
The Palaszczuk Government’s vision is for a public transport system that is accessible to everyone. The removal of annual and replacement card fees is one step towards this.
The Palaszczuk Government is ensuring commuters who are blind or have low vision can travel more independently with the introduction of the upgraded permanent go access Vision Impairment Travel Pass. The pass allows free travel on TransLink urban rail services and regional qconnect bus services, and is available from Vision Australia in partnership with Guide Dogs Queensland and Queensland Rail. To know more about Travel Assistance Brisbane, visit the Maximum Support Services website or call 1300983885.
The Vision Impairment Travel Pass is loaded onto a personalised myki and is valid on TransLink buses, trains and most ferries. It also entitles the holder to a companion card, which provides discounted travel for a carer or support worker. To apply, have a medical assessment completed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist and request the VIP application form from TransLink.

as someone who literally leaves tomorrow to go to university in iowa.... yeah if you don't live in the midwest, even americans barely care about iowa (except during caucus season cause our voting laws are terrible). my friend is coming from the east coast and all their friends are like "why the hell are you going to college in IOWA?" it's mostly soybean and corn farms with like three large towns, two of which are only large cause they host universities and the third's literally half an hour away from one of them so it just takes overflow.
YEAH i've been doing the math to put like, the size and population of iowa into perspective by comparing it to australia and my findings are as follows: the place with the most comparable number of people to iowa is the greater brisbane area (iowa has about half a million more people though), spread out across an area that's about nine times as big. This actually makes Iowa seem harder to ignore though, so to figure out how so many people can live there and how it can be so big, compared how much of the australian population lives in brisbane (19%) to how much of the american population lives in Iowa (0.97%) and those percentages really do make it like "o h that's how there are Whole States You Just Don't Hear About, america has a shitton of people in it." That being said, in high school I was in a math class for people so bad at math that we only did math for half a lesson and spent the rest of the lesson solving riddles so my faith in these numbers being correct is shaky at best lol.

There are fires in every state in Australia atm. Both NSW and VIC have declared a state of emergency for the next week, and are telling everyone in the SE NSW coast, the Snowy Mountains, and East Gippsland VIC regions to leave and tourists to stay away. Conditions on Saturday 4th January 2020 are expected to be extremely bad.
The first pics are photos that I’ve taken from my bedroom of orange and red sunrises and sunsets due to all the smoke in the atmosphere. All different days here, spread out over 3-4 months now. Smoke from the many bushfires that have been affecting Northern NSW and South East QLD have meant shitty air quality and apocalyptic looking scenes. Brisbane has been lucky, in that despite sometimes dangerous levels of air pollution, many of the fires have not impacted the city directly. The same cannot be said for the surrounds, with many communities in the Sunshine and Gold Coasts and around Ipswich/Toowoomba being affected. Unfortunately smoke spreading far and wide is not unique to Brisbane. I dare say most of Australia and now New Zealand too, have experienced smoke exposure from these bushfires.
Tumblr media
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, 2019 was Australia’s hottest and driest on record since records began in 1900.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The drought has affected a lot of Brisbane’s surrounds too. The Mt Tambourine area is running low on water. The primary school there actually ran out in the last couple weeks of term before Christmas and had to tell parents to keep their kids home. They’ve had to ship water in. And yet big commercial water companies are still allowed to be bottling what’s left of the water as if there’s no drought.
We’ve also been having successive dangerous heatwave conditions with temps well into the 40°C’s (almost the 50’s in places) with strong winds fueling the fires, and said fires then generating their own weather, including Pyrocumulonimbus clouds which produce dry lightning that start more fires.
And yet we have climate change denying fuckwits in parliament and a Prime Minister who thought going on holidays to Hawaii during what has been an unprecedented national disaster was a good idea, and then tried to blame his wife and kids for wanting the holiday, instead of owning up to the fact that he fucked up and should’ve stayed behind.
People here are livid at the lack of action, support for affected communities, and lack of support for the Rural Fire Brigades, who (along with state fire services) have been on the front lines for months fighting these fires, and whose members are made up entirely of volunteers, 3 of which have died. It’s also made worse by the fact that funding these services had been cut in several states last year before the fires started.
Honestly the last few months have been a bit of a shitshow, and with 2 more months of summer, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.

via Anarchists Worldwide Coordinated Actions in #Melbourne, #Brisbane, #PapuaNewGuinea, #SriLanka and #Malaysia in Solidarity with Anarchist / Antifascist Prisoners in #Russia
Following the announcements on anarchist media platforms of the manifestly excessive prison sentences faced by members of the FSB fabricated “Network” – Dmitry Pchelintsev, Ilya Shakursky, Arman Sagynbaev, Andrei Chernov, Vasily Kuksov, Mikhail Kulkov, and Maxim Ivankin – anarchists/ antifascists across the South/East Asia and Oceanic region undertook a series of spontaneous solidarity initiatives. Following the trials of Viktor Filinkov and Julian Boyarshinov, we will continue to undertake further actions to contribute to the forthcoming week of international solidarity, February 22-29.
We send our love, rage, strength, and friendship to not just the accused members of the “Network”, but all Russian anarchist/ antifascist prisoners experiencing torture and repression. Azat Miftahov, Ilia Romanov, Egor Lesnyh, Evgeny Karakashev and Kirill Kuzminkin, know that you too are in our thoughts and the unforgivable persecution you are enduring inspires us to act in defence of our shared commitment to anti-fascism/ anarchism.
Brisbane, Australia: In Meanjin/ Brisbane, primary school aged children, upon learning of the oppression faced by Russian comrades, were inspired to create a poster reading Release the Russian Network (A). This next generation of anti-authoritarians asked their solidarity message, “Cages are not for humans or animals”, be communicated to both Russian comrades and the state apparatuses responsible for their incarceration.
Melbourne, Australia: On February 17th, anarchists in Narrm/ Melbourne, a solidarity photo, featuring a group of local anarchists / antifascists, was taken with a banner reading: Love, Rage and Solidarity from ‘Australia’ to Russian Anarchists. STOP THE TORTURE! FCKFSB!
Music for the Global Intifada, a weekly anarchist radio program, broadcast from Narrm/ Melbourne, regularly reports on the situation of anarchist/ antifa prisoners in the Russian Federation. Programs broadcast on the 30 January and 13 February specifically reported on the pre and post sentencing of the ‘Network’ prisoners.
Sri Lanka:  On February 14th, antifascist anarchists in Sri Lanka, undertook an action at the Embassy of the Russian Federation, in the country’s capital Colombo. At the entrance to the embassy, an FTP themed banner was hung. It stated: Fight The Patriots! Flog Torturing Police! Flay the Prosecutor! Flames to Penitentiaries! Free the Prisoners! International Antifa Anarchist Solidarity with “Network” and all Political Prisoner Comrades in Russian Cells!
Malaysia: Anarchists in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, visited the Embassy of the Russian Federation on February 15th. A banner demanding FCK FSB FREE (A) /// NETWORK was attached to an outer wall of the highly guarded embassy.
Papua New Guinea: Anarchists in so-called Papua New Guinea communicated a solidarity message to comrades in the Russian Federation, “Solidarity from the outskirts of so-called Papua New Guinea, territory of hundreds of tribes and a neighbour of occupied West Papua. Until all are free!” This message was accompanied by a solidarity banner in Russian, FREEDOM TO ANARCHISTS FIRE TO PRISONS.

What was your school like?
Small. It was a church school so it wasn’t like a fancy or prestigious private school. We had uniforms which is the norm in Australia but they were like a little more formal than state schools (which is what we call public schools) and because it was Adventist most of the students were religious people. Some of my friends weren’t but they grew up in the school so they knew all about our church and even went to church summer camps and stuff. It was P-12 so you could literally start at preschool and stay til you graduate.
But the high school and primary school are separated by this tiny little man made creek. It’s not even a creek really but that’s what it was called. You had to walk over a little bridge to get to the other side of the campus. Because it was a church school we had a lot of students who commuted from across the south east of Brisbane and the north side of the Gold Coast. So we had private buses. I went on one to school every day. The bus driver was actually a family friend my parents met in their 20s, and still in our social circle aha. The school shrunk in numbers as I got older. But it was roughly 500-600 students at a time? Primary always had more. The high school was probably an average of 250 kids when I was there.
So like as you can imagine we all knew each other lol. There were two classes in each grade. Some rarely had 3 and even rarer my sister’s grade only had one class in year 7. 30 kids in the whole grade so there was no point splitting them for the sake of having two streams. That’s home room classes I mean. Obviously we had different classes when we had different subjects and such aha.
Every year we would have “team sports day” which was when all the other Adventist schools within driving distance (like 2 hours at most) would come and compete with each other with various sports. But the thing was you didn’t have to actually do the sports. It was an excursion so they’d all bring their entire schools. So for those of us like myself, who didn’t play sports. It was a huge social event and we would all be very invested in which boys would come and visit that year lmao
When I was in grade 11 our home room teacher didn’t return from a school break and then we later found out it was because he got caught in a sexual “relationship” with a girl in my class. So he went to jail.
Another youngish teacher would socialise with teen girls on the weekends. And everyone knew it was sus. He was never caught doing anything actually wrong but he left the school after his divorce and I think he also quit teaching lmao
There weren’t that many scandals other than the jail thing tbh. But everyone always shipped the jail teacher with any young single female teacher. So like it was a shock to find out he wasn’t into the adults 😳
We had 6 classes a day except Wednesday’s which was sport day. We had two classes then recess. Two then lunch. Then two then home. Wednesday’s we just had sport instead of the last two.
Um idk what else to tell 😂 we had a tuck shop/canteen and if you worked there as a student you got to have a free lunch of whatever you wanted. I never did coz of anxiety but that was cool.
The musical one year was high school musical. One of the girls who was in it actually became an actor a year later which wasn’t surprising since her older sister was already one.
Most of the teachers were nice but you could get in trouble for the dumbest things 😂 like not having your damn hat when you went to the bus. I got detention for that a lot.
Most of the teachers were really accommodating to my anxiety. It wasn’t diagnosed at the time but they treated me with special considerations just because they thought I was shy and that was good. One teacher didn’t but she’s a bitch and nobody liked her anyway. She bullied me and then the next year found someone else in the class to bully and kind of ignored me lol
Also back to the sport thing. One sport you could choose instead of sport was community service. Which was going to do yard work for people’s houses. And the two teachers who ran that service would always take us to McDonald’s afterwards. The bus driver was our religion teacher who was also the chaplain of the school and he would joke and call it the holy place 😂
They’d buy us all a 50c ice cream cone every Wednesday.

how to write australia!
australia is kind of a weird place. i think because a lot of people haven’t been to or seen the “real” australia, that they tend to not read about it. which should totally change, since australia is literally a goldmine of really “aesthetic” places and ambiences
* i talk about queensland a lot in this, because you guessed it, i’m a queenslander.
where things are
lots of desert out west. people are always like “omg desert!” but it’s more in the center of the land. places like western queensland, the northern territory, northern south australia and western australia will have the stereotypical red dirt that you’re looking for.
out in the desert there’s a lot of nothing. towns with 100 people, stuff like that. there’ll most likely be a pub, maybe a couple of houses. that’s it really. out in western queensland, there’s some “tourist” towns, like longreach (qantas museum) and winton (dinosaur shit), but if you’re going there, expect a lot of dirt and dead trees
a lot of people live on the coast. especially the east coast. it’s expected that 85% of the population live within 50km of the coast, so beach holidays are pretty common.
a not lot of people live in the cities for being cities, but our cities tend to be pretty big in space. like in queensland’s capital, brisbane, there’s a population of 2 million, but that’s 15,826 km² aka a huge space for legit a tiny population
towns are really spaced out. lots of suburbs in towns.
towns are really spaced out from each other. like there’s rest stops that are called ‘towns’ but they’re definitely rest stops. there might be a service station (gas station) but that’s it. between my town and the next town in the 10,000′s, there’s a 3/4 hour drive.
towns like mine
my town is a “small town” even though it’s not that small. we ain’t brisbane.
no diners. whatsoever. we haave restaurants, takeaway (both chain and local) and hipster local coffee places. take your pick.
lot’s of coal miners. just throughout australia even. a lot of them do ‘fifo’ work (fly in, fly out), where they live in a city, but fly out to the mines on weekdays. it’s not weird for one of your parent’s to be away during the week.
my town is indeed a mining town. shit was great during ‘the mining boom’ but now it’s the mining bust and there’s big expensive houses with no one to buy them.
we’re kind of near the great barrier reef, but not close enough to profit from it lol. it’s not a tourist town.
it’s not an “oh i can walk to my friend’s house” town. i can walk to one of my friend’s houses. other times we just drive.
“the bush”
the bush is hot. it’s hot as fuck and it’s not fun 90% of the time.
the other 10% is fucking around in the bush. which is fun.
chances are that a person in your family or a family friend has owned property out in woop-woop and you’ve gone and fucked around in the bush.
lots of little creeks everywhere. if you find a creek, good on you, gold star, don’t drink from it.
my cousins and i once went crabbing, bogged our buggy, walked like 5km home, went to look for firewood in said buggy and rolled it all in the same afternoon. easter saturday.
there are miles and miles of actually nothing. literally nothing at all. if you get lost. there’s a high chance you won’t be found again.
there’s a lot of cane farming in queensland. lots of cane farms and sugar mills. i remember driving to cairns once, and seeing the steam from a sugar mill off in the distance. it was the dead of night and there was so much steam i legit thought there was a fire.
there’s ruins in the bush. lots of old cars and sheds of random shit that have rusted away.
trees aren’t lush and green. it’s not a forest. they’re barky, shredded trees. more grey than green.
climate
it’s really hot for like 8 months of the year. the other four are pretty chill.
when we say it’s hot. it’s hot like you can’t imagine. it’s not just hot, it’s humid. the air is so sticky and thick and your clothes will stick to you. there’s been days with 99% humidity. come on. that is RAIN.
we get good breeze here because we’re on the coast. out west it’s hellfire. but they’re used to it i guess lol.
no snow sorry eek. except in ski resorts like hotham, thredbo, falls creek, places like that.
school
we wear uniforms. like school uniforms. they’re not cute. they’re super dorky and everyone and their dog gets their grandma to take their skirts up.
“no hat, no play” headass.
we don’t have cafeterias. bring your own fucking lunch. we do have tuckshop though. you can buy lunch or snacks from there for money. some of my childhood faves:
choccy milk
chicken gougons (chicken chippies but they sounded fancy)
chicken noodles
we got a slushie machine in grade 4. it was legendary.
4 pieces of red licorice for 20c???? bargain.
we have grades! normally it goes kindergarden (kindy), prep and then grades 1-12
we get an ATAR instead of a gpa or whatever the fuck. it’s a score from 0.05 (ur fucked lol) and 99.95 (ur a doctor).
on facebook you’ll find heaps of “hsc discussion group 2020/2019″ groups. yeah some people post notes, some people offer tutoring and most people post memes
sport
now, i’ll admit, i’m not into sport. but we are nothing if not a sporting nation.
i did swimming, played hockey, and dance
saturday mornings are for kids sport. it’s a thing. every kid plays a sport. we are sporty by nature.
we also get really into sport. rugby league, union, touch and afl are the big ones. rugby league is the big one.
there’s also a thing called ‘the state of origin’ between the queensland (the maroons) and new south wales (the blues). the blues suck don’t @ me. the maroons had an 8 year winning streak from 2006-2013. my mum can’t watch it because it stresses her out too much.
there was an ICONIC moment done by johnathan thurston (aka the cowboys and the league’s best player of all time). i remember screaming at the television and i HATE that. there’s so much that happens in these 11 minutes. it’s fucking wild. (https://youtu.be/SU5zcrDvMDU)
politics
liberal is “not good” in australia. the labour party is basically the equivalent of the democratic party (i think??)
we have a prime minister, but it changes a lot idk who it is now lol
compolsory to vote. you get a fine if you don’t.
other things you should know
we use the metric system because we’re not fuckheads.
no guns. gun control ay. if you have a gun, you’re probably a farmer.
not many starbucks here. sorry lol it’s shit coffee anyways

Family is who you choose
On Thursday my grandfather passed away, he was seventy-two. Due to the current limits put on our society, I could only take part in the funeral via a pixelated Zoom feed. It still doesn’t quite seem real, like all of my emotions are muted, or coming through a sieve.
I only met Papa once in the first six years of my life — I lived in the United States, he lived in Malaysia.  However, in September 2002, my family left Minnesota to move to the north coast of NSW. At the same time, Papa left Malaysia, along with my teenaged aunties, Rachel and Leah.  Together, my mum, dad, brother, aunties, Papa and myself lived in a loud brick house with tile floors on the banks of a murky canal for the next two years. When I first met him he had tanned, angular features and a hair line that would foresee my owns recession. He could be a grumpy SOB, often locking himself in his room for hours on end reading, barely saying a word to anyone. He was in contrast to the grandfather I had left behind in Minnesota, but over the years I learned to appreciate the ways he showed his love, which was almost always through his actions rather than his words. By the time Rachel, Leah and Papa moved out, we had lived up to what we technically already were: a family.
There are seven people that called Papa dad. Not all of them had his blood running through their veins, but all of them were his children. He was the head of our family, a family that has stretched across the globe and then retracted again. Growing up in Australia I got to know every one of them, living near them all throughout my life. Now in the age of Covid-19, we cannot be together to remember him.
Many of my relationships with family are built on food, however with Papa it was not the force of our bond. For us it was always sport, and in later years’ politics. But in life food is ever present, so there are always memories. Sadly, as many anecdotes from his eulogy attest, his cooking was never spectacular. In his final decade he wrapped his head around a slow cooker, but prior to that it was mostly unbalanced pastas and maybe a snag here and there. Still, there was a cheese plater on the table whenever we arrived, and a bowl of chips whenever the footy was on.
I know when this mess is over, we will all be together to remember him. For now, we have to settle for our memories. One night comes to mind that illustrates just how special a man he was, and the sort of family he created for us.
 ****
Papa and Kate’s place in Goonengary sits atop tall stilts, a fading hardwood abode hovering above the forest. It is surrounded by a deck that stretches out into an undercover area where we celebrated Papa’s 70th birthday two years ago. From the deck you can see miles and miles of valley.  Far away, the hill on the other side rises up — a dark green sheet of wilderness.
On right side of the deck were around 80 bottles of Papa’s Russian roulette homebrew. Some bottles (the good ones) are light and bubbly.  The rest (around a third), either explode in your hand or fizzle out, flat as a tack.  In my experience growing up around the man who brewed them, his moods could be the same. Sometimes exuberant (particularly on topic of his beloved Bombers), sometimes barely able to illicit a groan of discontent at the state of the world. The only way you can tell what you are going to get is by unscrewing the lid.
The quiet there is that perfect Australian bushland quiet, broken only by birds and the sound of wallabies crashing through the thicket. Although sometimes humans do interfere, that day as we arrived, the cursing of my father reigned supreme while he struggled to park the van in the uneven spots provided.
Kate and the dog, Bella, a black as midnight Kelpie/Labrador with a strong snout, met us at the top of the stairs.  Kate is the final woman in Papa’s life, a life that had produced children in all along the east coast as well as across the Indian Ocean. Kate is tall and sharp.  Her hair sits short and trimmed, giving her the air of being in charge, which she is.
As always she greeted my brother Gus and I with a tight embrace, and a peck on the cheek.
‘How good of you to come all this way!’ she said loudly, easy in her role as de facto grandmother.
Around the back of the house, beyond the deck and up a tree, my uncle Adam is attaching a light to some branches, his feet perched unsteadily atop a wobbly ladder. His partner Tammy watching nervously from the safety of the ground. When he saw us, he hopped down with the agility of a man who has spent more than his fair share of time sailing.
‘Where’s Joey?’ my dad asked, sauntering over from the finally parked van.
‘Asleep, as per usual.’ Adam replied, referring to his ex’s daughter who had long ago become a functioning member of the Dennis family.
Seeing my dad and Adam together brought a warmth to my chest and a smile to my face. They both stand short and stout, much like their father; all with small bellies, short legs and strong arms.  No doubt my future is similar, but now is not the time for fretting.
Born in Victoria before spending their early youth in Papua New Guinea where Papa had been an economic advisor, my dad and Adam had been inseparable. Boarding school in central NSW had only brought them closer. Now middle-aged, living in Sydney and Brisbane respectively, it is odd to think of the distance that separated them. I looked over at Gus, rubbing his eyes into action, I was happy he would soon be joining me in the Victoria. Now, two years later, the distance is reinstated, only we’ve swapped places, he in Melbourne and I in Brisbane.
That night the deck bubbled with the conversations of a family reunited, eager to gain snippets of information about each other’s lives:
‘So how is Melbourne?’
‘Are you still working at so-and-so’s?’
‘Jeez, time really does fly doesn’t it?’
Across the table sat the youngest contingent of the family, my cousins Josh (ten) and Piper (six). Both still had beautiful wispy curls, the type of hair that Gus had had when he was a toddler, before it turned into the dirty blonde bird’s nest it is today. It had been over a year since I saw either of them. I tried to hold back my comments on the topic, remembering the monotonous feeling of being on the other side of the conversation at family events like this.
Despite the all-around contentedness, everyone had food on their minds. That night we were treated to a caterer, which was lucky, as Papa was known for his stubbornness around the BBQ and his ‘well-done’ (burnt) lamb chops; blackened meat that had still united us. I remember him showing me mint jelly for the first time when I was around ten, smearing on the flubberesque jelly from a Masterfoods jar onto his shank. He improved on the Webber over the next decade, but back then it was a saving grace.
With the caterer in charge, smoke and steam emanated from the grill and covered the crowd in a blanket of hunger. We were in for a treat.
When we were called in it was worth the wait: spiced chicken thighs with the skin charred from the grill, were still bursting with lean white meat inside. The cartilage, a Dennis favourite, was easy to pull from the end of the bones, crunchy and ever so forgiving when chewed.  Alongside the chicken was a salad brimming with cashews and zingy from citrus. This was not the food of a usual Dennis gathering. Afterwards, all that remained were empty plates and stained white table cloths.
My aunt Leah took the role of MC, a little awkwardly at first but after a few sips of bubbles she was rolling. Slender and Malaysian, not many would pick her to be related to me, or anyone else here for that matter. Sadly, Rachel couldn’t make it, but was sending her regards from Germany via a pixelated skype call.
Leah brought Adam up to make a speech, a role handed to him as the only sibling who would enjoy making a speech. He pulled out his gift to my grandfather: two golden garden gnomes.  The first bowing cheerily, the other just as jovial, its middle finger raised to whoever may walk by. ‘They represent the lessons I have learned from my father, the gnomes of acceptance and resistance.’ The statues looked an awful lot like him and his father — only neither of the gnomes had Papa’s scowl in their repertoire.
Ending on a teary note that further reflected how we all felt, looking into Papa’s eyes, Adam summed it up well, ‘you taught me family is who you choose.’
