Cannot stand the new Mobile Discord UI, actually. Like. Why? Just why? I liked that it reflected Desktop, it was simple to understand and use and all the information I needed (locations of unread messages) were all in one spot instead of split up by buttons on a hot bar.
Also that DMs tab is fucking trash, dude, that triggers every part of my ADHD so bad, why does it look like a screen of emails what is WRONG with you people?
And why is the settings button so stupidly difficult to find? Like it should not be that small and take that many steps to get to. What the fuck?
I've already used a process to rollback to an older version of the app but like why can't there just be a toggle? Why can't we let apps be unique and have unique interfaces instead of trying to make them all work the fucking same? I use Discord because it ISN'T Amino or Instagram or Google Hangouts or Skype or Steam or anything like them! That's the point! That's the fucking point!
Stop fucking homogeonizing everything into Messenger App #57! This fucking sucks!
#slime speaks#i've already left feedback in every avenue i can#i wouldn’t be complaining if they just. gave me a toggle option for ui preference#i get the new ui might make more sense to other people but like#it's too cluttered and has too many steps#i use this app to message because it's simple and has all the things i need it to have#and all of it is easy to find because i know where it is#discord#discord update

A quick Stylus script to make Tumblr's new sidebars a little less crowded and more comfortable
So, that new sidebar, yeah? Sure is a thing. The tumblr devs might change things before it's fully implemented across the board, and Xkit Rewritten might add some options after the interface moves from testing to permanent -- but until they do, here's a little fix to spread things out a little, so that your tumblr experience doesn't feel so squished. It results in a dash like this:
which is a little more comfortable than the original, I think.
To install the script, first make sure you install the addon/extension Stylus, if you don't have it already. And then, well, simply click here, and click "install" to add the style. Enjoy your more wide open spaces!
(Code under the cut for advanced users; comments or suggestions are welcome. You're also free to modify your own copies for any sidebar width or spacing you prefer.)
/* ==UserStyle== @name Tumblr - New Sidebar Fixes @namespace https://nobodysuspectsthebutterfly.tumblr.com @author Mindset @description Moves Tumblr's new sidebars outward to make things a little less crowded. @version 1.3 @license GPL-3.0-or-later ==/UserStyle== */ @-moz-document domain("tumblr.com") { /* makes sure this only applies to page sizes where the sidebars appear */ @media (min-width: 1150px) { /* moves the left sidebar further left */ .ZkG01 .h_Erh { margin-right: 100px !important; margin-left: -90px !important; } /* keeps the center section the width it should be and moves the right sidebar to the right */ .ZkG01 .lSyOz { min-width: 625px !important; padding-right: 100px !important; } /* keeps the right sidebar the width it should be */ .ZkG01 .e1knl { min-width: 320px !important; } } }
#tumblr#[tumblr]#sidebars#tumblr ui#tumblr update#stylus#stylish#userstyles#css#coding#i may fiddle with this to reverse the ui to put the menu on the right and the search/check out/radar/xkit tracked tags on the left...#which is easy to do with one line but harder if you want to keep the tumblr t up there on the top left or other things idk#though either way i'm pretty sure i'll do that in a different script rather than updating this one#also fyi this is tagged stylish because my older css tweaks were tagged that but don't use stylish it's spyware sorry. use stylus instead#also posting code on tumblr these days is a pita ugh

I spent 3hrs today creating a new art portfolio website on a new platform only to find out it was not, in fact, free. I found this out after I finally finished making the site.
Anyways that's how my Friday went.
#cherry rambles#the way i was DEVASTATED#the design is simple enough that i can recreate it on a diff website builder BUT#I actually really loved this particular website builder compared to other ones ive used in the past#tbe UI is really nice and easy to navigate and very intuitive to use#and their desktop-to-mobile layouts were super fluid and easy to adjust together everything just flowed so smoothly#THEN BAM#NOT FREE#and its not even cheap (for me)#whelp#back to the drawing board#tho one day#i will finally finish learning html#and just code my own custom site#i would love to make a fun interactive artist website for myself#I'll throw it on my adhd to do list LOL

i have been in boston for five days and ive absolutely Nothing nice to say about it. west coast continues to be best coast if only because you dont need 200 years of lore to navigate the transit system
#mochi rambles#salem was cool tho i would go back there but fuck boston proper god the transit is so bad#its clean? it runs often? the signs are visually easy to read? *nothing about it makes ANY SENSE*#i may be a little salty that i had to buy a ticket for a train ride because the pass i have didnt fucking work at a terminal#because i made the grave error of *going down the wrong platform*#because the ui is bad and boston should feel bad#heaven forbid you try and tap into the opposite direction train platform whatever after getting lost#a completely normal thing when your signage is as intuitive as astrophysics#also i have been nearly run over as a pedestrian like eight times#ive left our hotel six times#including us swapping hotels cos the first place had ROACHES#also i get off the bus to our roach free hotel at everett and the bus announcement thing#puts a whole extra syllable in there#i had to visually read the next stop Everett sign as the announcement went to connect them#ugh

It became very apparent in the early days of the pandemic, when so many people had to shift quickly to working from home, that having home PC has become a thing of the past. In my department of 100 or so people, I was one of about 5 who had a home desktop. Around half had some kind of laptop, but a good proportion of them were little netbooks or Chromebooks. Everyone else only used tablets or phones at home.
It's not (just) that kids aren't interested in learning to use a PC, it's that an increasing number of households don't even have one available that they could use.
Telling young zoomers to "just switch to linux" is nuts some of these ipad kids have never even heard of a cmd.exe or BIOS you're throwing them to the wolves
#i strongly believe that using a PC is like eating fibre#sure it might not go down as easy as ultra-processed mobile UI pop-tarts#but it's important for a healthy technical digestive system

android update made my phone look more like an iphone >:( but i was able to turn some of it off!! :) and it gave me more space per page on my home screen for apps and widgets and whatnot which is kinda nice
anyway remember to dig around in the settings kids there might be some fun stuff like turning off the difference between swiping down on the left and right sides of the top of your device to being down two seperate menus that should just be one fucking menu anyway :) and as always: fuck apple
#android#fuck apple#fuck android honestly theyre the ones that made me spend half of my waking hours before leaving for work doing that shit#UI should be clean and easy to use and have fucking BUTTONS#fuck gestures. for real.

here's a list of programs/sites/whatever that were helpful to me when i was moving away from using spotify & back to downloading music:
soulseek - peer to peer downloading program, has most music you'd want. there's "rules" to it though and the UI is a little confusing, but you can figure it out. there's tutorials. i believe in you
cobalt.tools, ytiz.xyz, yt-dlp - mp3 downloaders, for the songs that you can't find on soulseek
musicbee - music player, extremely customiseable. reminds me of when i used itunes back in the day. has a lot of good features, including syncing music over to your phone
lastfm & listenbrainz - sites that keep track of your listening stats. i'd recommend this even if you still choose to use a music streaming service
syncedlyrics - cmd thing that gets you timed song lyrics, like the ones spotify has. there's no UI but it's easy enough to use. just grab the lyrics and timestamps it spits out and paste it into musicbee
music presence - program that shows what song you're listening to in your discord status, in case you use discord and enjoy the thought of other people seeing what you're listening to, which i do for some reason
i'm not going to lie to you and say that switching away from spotify/streaming services is an effortless task, it took me half a whole day of nonstop Work to get all my music downloaded and sorted out, but i will say that it was worth it!! and you should do it 👍 if you want to
ETA: for more resources, check the reblogs! Plenty of different people have pitched in more sites/programs/etc that i didn't mention here that might be helpful to you as well
#on my phone i'm using poweramp. which i did pay for but that's entirely because i didnt like musicolet/pulsar's UI#and if you have the money you should buy the music from the artists you enjoy. but also pirate more it's ok

ahh honestly it's not a straightforward UX thing. typically, when people look at a timestamp, the most useful thing is to know relatively when it was rather than specifically, and the lay person wont want to do the maths in their head
like, '2024-09-11 2:04am' works, maybe '11th Sep 2024 2:04am' might be easier to some, but neither are perfect mostly because not everyone will read them at the same speed. i prefer the former, but that's because it's the datetime format i'm used to, but pretty much everyone can read 'about an hour ago' and know that it's a timestamp from about an hour ago without having to do an extra step in thinking
there's also the fact that most interfaces simply arent designed for taking screenshots of. like, that's just not a usecase anyone is thinking about. maybe they should but eh the interface is designed to be used first and everything else second
there are middle-grounds that might help i guess, like for a timestamp <24 ago you could give only the time (eg '2:04am'), but that doesnt actually solve the issue here, since you end up picking-and-choosing what parts of the timestamp to show (tumblr shows eg 'Sep 11' for posts older than a day or few)
generally, the reason why a UI does something the way it does can usually be boiled down to the fact that they almost always serve the lowest common denominator, which means it will work good enough for most but not fantastic for many
also, you can hover over most timestamps in most UIs and it will tell you the exact timestamp. depending how it's done it may take a second to show, but usually it's there (tumblr does this via the title attribute, which is the usually best way to do so). doesnt work for mobile but most UX is inferior on mobile
It's absolutely horrible how modern interface design gives times relatively like "2 hours ago" and "1 day ago" firstly because you often see 3 posts all saying "1 day ago" and want to know what order they were posted in, which you are now not told. But also because it means any screenshots of the post now retain NO information about when the post is from. It's also just. Much less useful information. I can instantly look at a date/time and think "oh that was about a day ago" I cannot look at a post that was "about a day ago" and know when it was posted.
#lizabeth talkabeth#this prolly isnt helpful at all but i work on uis all day#so i end up having Thoughts on it#and i do like working & thinking on them#the last bit isnt a statement on mobile or anything#its just that a lot of things that make desktop clean and easy to use just dont translate to mobile at all#purely because mobile has a smaller screen no keyboard and no mouse#less options less usability

Your art is awesome! I especially love the way you draw Jamie. If there were official Our Life comics I'd want you to be the artist for them.
#excuse me?!?!#That is so sweet omfghfkghksfhdkjfdh#responses#in my playthroughs Jamie is usually the default when customization opens up#I play on the steamdeck and the customization UI isn't easy to use#the dang keyboard always pops up#so I always just go with the default options so that I can at least play the game#gbpatch#gb patch games#olbaa#olba#our life#our life beginnings & always

for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?
for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?
if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason
#tumblr#idk that radio shack post made me think#how much money could tumblr make if they fixed problems we wanted them to?
