Interior Design Ideas: Nantucket Shingle Style Home
If you’ve read my blog for a few years, you probably will know that I love classic homes and this Nantucket shingle home built by Orren Pickell Building Group is a home that is sure to not go out of style anytime soon.
Here, the builder share the insights of this beautifully designed home: “Honoring their East Coast roots and incorporating a cozy farmhouse feel guided the design of this gracious shingle home.
After scouring the area for land that would offer the right combination of privacy and views, the family selected this wooded, ten-acre parcel. The Pickell team positioned the home at the high point, making sure to maximize the expansive vistas on all sides.
Architectural details such as a cupola and shingled exterior provide the Nantucket aesthetic the family wanted, while the interior has the warm, lived-in feel they desired. The chicken coop, supplying fresh eggs every morning, fits right in.
Broad pine planks, rough-hewn beams in the dining room and reclaimed timbers in the family room add to the farmhouse character and complement the family’s rustic American antiques. However, custom cabinetry and an open first-floor plan make the home eminently livable today.
An eat-in kitchen, formal dining room and living room flow easily from one to another, creating an ideal space for entertaining. In addition, the first floor features an expansive master suite with indoor and outdoor showers, office space, and a large mudroom centered around a vintage workbench.
The lower level is home to an antique bar the owners found in a shop in Indiana, as well as a gym and a soccer practice area (complete with reinforced drywall to prevent damage). Three more bedrooms complete the layout upstairs.
Throughout the interior, warm colors, extensive wood, natural light and comfortable furnishings make the 5,000 home feel friendly and intimate, just as the family dreamed of.”

Two Luxury Single Family Houses With Red And Grey Decor
Two terrific tours of single family house interiors are here to show us how to tackle a red and grey colour palette for maximum impact, each designed and visualised by Tamizor. Our first luxury family home plays host to a vibrant red sectional sofa, red rug and red pendant light combination that dominates an open plan family living space. All other parts of the living area are knocked back in shades of grey and black, with light relief from wood panelling. The second tour is a slightly different take on the colour theme. White is used to offset swathes of grey and black, and only a smidge of red accent colour showcases inside this scheme.
Tour number one kicks off in a minimalist living room, with a vibrant colour block combo of a red modern sofa, red area rug, red coffee table and a red pendant light. All of the pieces hold together in one single shade of red.
The L-shaped sectional sofas hug the lounge layout around two corners of the huge red rug, facing each other in a conversational arrangement. A tv is mounted on one side of the lounge, opposite the lively flicker of the contemporary fireplace on the other.
The modern fireplace is of a linear design, set upon a black hearth with a rugged edge.
A black wall partially divides the lounge from the dining room, and obscures part of the fireplace from view of the sofas.
An unusual floor lamp lights up the charcoal coloured drapes. LED strip lights illuminate the underside of a black slatted wall panel that frames the tv.
More modern dark interior design shapes the adjacent kitchen dining area. Huge pendant lights hover as giant black cones over a black dining table and grey chairs. A charcoal coloured kitchen looms darkly behind the eating area.
Wood slat panels and doors lighten the look of the dark decor at one side of the open plan room.
Red wall art punctuates the end of the hallway.
A modern grey kitchen sink is sunken into the central island.
A black staircase design rises up through the hall, with black metal balustrades drawing vertical lines all the way from the treads to the ceiling. Daylight peeps through the spindles from full height windows behind. Huge planters grow a couple of plants inside the glass.
Across from the modern staircase, a red pouf sits in front of a large wall mirror. The pouf matches the sectional red sofas in the lounge. These two areas are marked as separate by a change in flooring design – one being covered in light beechwood planks and the other finished in a wide dark tile.
The master bedroom has a completely grey and wood decor scheme, aside from a burst of green coming in with mature indoor plants. A grey bed and padded headboard design is set on top of a grey bedroom rug. Long grey drapes pool at the window.
A glass wall ensuite bathroom follows on with the grey theme, with a grey double vanity unit and grey flooring.
On the way to bed, there is a luxury walk in closet hidden behind wood slat panel doors.
The double slatted doors slide apart to reveal a wide array of garment rails, shelves and drawers. Red seating is lined along the middle of the space.
Even the home gym gets a splash of red, in the form of a red balance ball.
Green botanical art provides contrast.
Inside the ensuite, textured grey floor tiles match rugged grey walls.
Mirrored cabinets are underlined with mood lighting in the shadowy scheme.
Our second tour features a modern living room for car lovers.
Red artwork has been hung on the wall to vie for attention, but whether the slatted doors are opened or closed, it’s the collection of sports cars that wins the award for showstopper.
A white sofa stretches out in front of the white sports cars, joined by another at its side.
Mirrored coffee tables sit in front of each designer couch, reflecting the light from huge windows opposite.
A cool floor lamp joins each of the sofas too.
Green garden views contrast with the red wall art in the room.
A grey area rug holds the whole lounge furniture arrangement together as one cohesive connected area.
A black slatted panel creates a commanding backdrop behind the tv. A white media unit cuts across the dark feature wall. More black slat panel work draws attention to the chimney breast that rises up to the rafters in the room, setting off a modern fireplace.
LEDs illuminate the treads of a dark staircase design.
The luxury dining room contains a huge grey stone table and chunky grey dining chairs.
Black slatted panels cover the dining room ceiling, with track lights twinkling through.
White kitchen cabinets brighten the border of the room.
The kitchen’s dining peninsula matches the rugged cut of the stone dining table nearby. The peninsula support leg is created by a linear planter design that rises up through the countertop.
One wall of the galley kitchen is a lightbox, glowing over the prep area and the grey kitchen sink.
The units that meet with the kitchen peninsula are dark grey to match, with colour coordinated integrated appliances.
Dual aspect green garden views bless the monochrome kitchen design.

It’s All in the Details for a Prewar Home
From skim coat to custom bookcases, a Fort Greene co-op makes a debut
Drawn in by the landmarked building’s beautiful casement windows and parquet floors, Cat and Jordan closed on a 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath co-op apartment in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. They loved the prewar apartment’s convenient location and proximity to Fort Greene Park but were put off by the interior’s worn and outdated appearance. The color scheme—yellowy-beige walls against the bright red brick of a nonfunctioning fireplace and tired cherry cabinets—was not to their taste.
Aside from the lackluster color, the walls had been repainted too many times to count, resulting in a “thick, uneven, mushroom-colored appearance.” The bad paint job was exacerbated by the defunct wiring that circled the baseboards. The wood floors told the same story: a lovely parquet (which Cat was partial to, having grown up in a home with it) was obscured by layers of shiny yellow varnish. The couple wanted to brighten up the space by stripping the walls and floors, adding custom built-in bookcases around the fireplace, and renovating the kitchen to make a “warm, modern home, comfortable, with spare decorations,” they explained.
Although they knew that their main goal was to make their apartment “look as big, bright, and clean as possible,” they were uncertain about how to make that goal a reality. Cat readily admits that neither she nor Jordan are design people, and “needed a lot of guidance.” With this in mind, they approached Sweeten, a free service matching homeowners with vetted contractors, to find a design-build contractor who would focus on the details and bring together a coherent aesthetic vision for the entire home. They chose a Sweeten contractor who provided direction and involved Cat and Jordan in the design process without overwhelming them with options. The couple described the process this way: “The contractor genuinely loves working with clients, explaining choices and limitations, and knew when to give us the ultimate stylistic decision and when to push back with his expert opinion.”
In the kitchen, their contractor focused on executing the two main principles behind the renovation: creating a “simple, sleek, elegant but functional design,” while preserving “the warmth and hominess of the traditional elements of the prewar apartment.” Since the kitchen opens into the living room, it was important for the materials in both rooms to echo each other. The satin-finished dark gray cabinetry, custom designed by the contractor, contrasts with the ¾”-thick white Caesarstone countertops and backsplash. The addition of a ¼” x ¼” reveal all around the countertops emphasizes the straight horizontal lines, and gives the countertop a lighter appearance. Similarly, the stainless-steel backsplash provides horizontal continuity and ties in with the appliances of the same material. Drawers have carved-out pull tabs rather than handles for a streamlined look. One of the loveliest aspects of the kitchen is hidden—the interiors of the drawers are made of a natural walnut, with perfectly-sized compartments for silverware and each kitchen implement. Cat says, “I never thought that the inside of a drawer could, or even should, be beautiful, but I appreciate seeing the woodwork every time I reach for a utensil.”
There were some minor changes made as the demolition got underway. An island was originally planned for additional prep and storage space, but when demo revealed that the dividing wall could not be knocked down as far as originally planned, they scaled the island back to a peninsula with a smaller footprint. As in this Sweeten renovation, however, an obstacle turned out to be an advantage. “In the end,” they said, “the peninsula was perfect and very functional.” On the kitchen side, the peninsula held all of the cooking kitchenware and cookware, as well as two bins (one for recycling, the other for trash). On the dining room side, cabinet space is filled with napkins and placemats, as well as cookbooks.
Additionally, a bonus was the modern and very useful bar top, which the Sweeten contractor proposed in a number of variations. The pair chose to go with a standalone reverse L-shape that complements the style and shape of the peninsula, and it provides a “comfortable and practical surface for leaning, resting a coffee mug or wine glass, or working on a laptop while sitting on a bar stool.” The open space between the bar and countertop creates a connection between the kitchen and the dining space. The couple has also used the bar for appetizers for dinner guests, and “people seem to naturally congregate around it.” They love the uniqueness of the bar, which adds a dash of unexpectedness to the room.
One of the elements Cat and Jordan were most excited about were the kitchen floor tiles. Originally, the kitchen had beige, textured, large-format tiles on the floor, which they hated. After seeing a feature in The New York Times’ Real Estate section, Cat had the idea to use cement tiles and wanted a slightly abstract, black-and-white pattern. With the guidance of their contractor, they decided on a medley of Moroccan tiles in black, white, and gray hues. As Jordan explained, “The more traditional patterns reflected the age of the apartment and the black casement windows, while the mix of different patterns loosened up the feel. We continued the same tiles in the fireplace floor, and it tied the living area and kitchen together very well. We were eager to see the finished tile floor, and we love how it turned out.”
In the living room, their contractor designed a new fireplace mantel with clean lines to complement the new built-in bookshelves. Its simplicity provided a focal point, surrounded by the more colorful books on the new shelves. The walls were also skim coated and repainted. Initially, Jordan did not see the value in spending the time and money on skim coating (a texturing technique to hide construction tape and other imperfections to give walls a smooth and plaster-like appearance) but is so glad that they did it—“I can’t believe what a difference it made—the whole place looks lighter, brighter, and fresher.” They chose a soft white for the walls with a slightly brighter, contrasting shade of white trim on the picture ledge railing, baseboards, and doors. This serene backdrop was perfect for highlighting the work of their friend, artist, and architect Shane Neufeld displayed prominently above the fireplace. The casement windows were also repainted and tidied up, while the parquet floors were stripped and refinished in a matte coating, preserving their original wood tones.
Cat and Jordan found the biggest challenge in the renovation was living through the construction, which took longer than expected due to hold-ups with the cabinetry. They weren’t able to use the kitchen and had to wash dishes in the bathroom and eat a lot of takeout. Wicket, their Norfolk Terrier, was curious about all the construction, so a baby gate was set up to keep her safe. “Wicket was pretty suspicious of the floor-sanding equipment, tiles, wood-cutting tools, floorboards, mop, and other supplies. Luckily, our contractors did a fantastic job consolidating the equipment in the construction zone and cleaning up at the end of each day, so we only had a few barking flip-outs,” said Jordan.
Lastly, the couple has a bit of advice for future renovators: watch some home renovation shows to get design ideas, but also to “inure yourself to the possibility that something unexpected can, and almost certainly will happen during a renovation, especially in an old building.” While nothing of budget-blowing proportions came up in their reno, they did learn to take construction surprises in stride. For example, when the contractor had to change the kitchen island to a slightly smaller peninsula, they realized that the overhead recessed LED lights were off-center for the new design. “Rather than rip out the new lights, call back the electrician to move them a few inches, and patch and repaint the ceiling, our Sweeten contractor came up with the easy solution of angling the adjustable beams to shine over the peninsula from their present location. Having watched so many renovation TV shows, we felt relieved that nothing major popped up and were less disturbed by minor changes in the plans.”
Thanks to Cat, Jordan, and Wicket for sharing their beautifully updated prewar home!

Interiors That Show Brave Use Of Creative Finishes In Small Spaces
It’s easy to imagine putting statement pieces into a large living space, bedroom or bathroom, but sometimes not so easy to envision them working in smaller quarters. Limited space can often lead to limited ideas on pattern, materials and panelling; feeling boxed in can stop us from thinking outside of the box. If you’ve struggled with this, then these three small home designs are all set to inspire you. Each of these homes contain modestly sized spaces that are styled with big ideas. The interiors boast their own modern characterful features and brave use of creative finishes, some of which you might only ever have imagined in larger proportions.
Designer: Obriy Architects   Visualizer: Obriy Architects   First up, we take a tour around a 50.5 square metre home, designed for a Dutch entrepreneur client in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Russet tones, cream and palest grey colour a modern scheme, with linear cuts and slick finishes. Even the soft furnishing materials have a linearity to them, with corduroy style rib running through the sofa upholstery, and ridged stripes in the tonal area rug.
The marble coffee table has a slatted effect, which runs in line with the wood grain laminate floor beneath.
The media wall is where we meet our first big idea for a small space. Despite the dimensions of the tiny living room, this wall is given a super eye-catching treatment. A stainless steel panel creates a high shine silver backdrop for a sleek black floating media unit. Visually, the panel and unit seem to pull together as one much bigger, more impressive piece of furniture. The reflective steel surface reflects light in the room, and so has a space widening effect too.
A projected clock is splashed above the media unit and panel ensemble. The huge digital clock digits dominate the lounge but take up no physical space at all.
The small open plan living space is roughly halved between lounge area and kitchen diner. The floor changes from wood laminate to terrazzo tile to mark the transition.
Talk about brave finishes in a small space! This all out terrazzo dining room is a showstopper, and if the terrazzo confetti-style pattern wasn’t enough, there is also a ribbed wall panel to turn up the texture. The base of the round dining table is ribbed to match, and even the vertical radiator complements the effect. Cream modern dining chairs sit crisply against the brave backdrop, and a simple glass vase dresses the table.
The L-shaped kitchen is a thing of modern beauty, with gorgeous wood grain cabinets and glowy backlit open shelving.
A unique table lamp provides the cosy glow in the lounge.
The end of the kitchen peninsula is dedicated to drinking glass storage, putting them in easy reach of the adjacent dining table.
Indoor plants in modern planters grow a tropical touch in the bedroom.
A sleek bedroom pendant light drops over the wide framed platform bed.
The wide bed frame negates the need for bedside tables.
A stunning metallic closet stands opposite the foot of the bed. An elegant elliptical mirror is poised outside of the mini walk-in.
Inside the bathroom, a unique beige bathroom set contrasts with super pale grey walls.
Beige bathroom tiles mark out a splash zone around the bathtub.
Perspective drawing.
Designer: HE.D group   Visualizer: HE.D group   Our second home is located in Kyiv, Ukraine. The lounge is a simple layout of a low backed modern sofa and a minimalist round coffee table.
Despite its minimalist beginnings, this home interior goes maximalist on detail and finishing techniques. At the edge of the lounge and the bedroom alike, portiere pull closed across enchanting curved partitions.
The small studio layout does not discourage the use of pattern here. Green-grey and beige pattern swirls across a marble effect kitchen. Red wall panels create strong contrast and visual heat.
At the other end of the spectrum, the bedroom is a calm and collected scheme of plain pale greys. Two bedside table lamps bring in a balance of black on beige night stands.
Just outside of the bedroom perimeter, a comfortable lounge chair and a floor reading lamp make up a reading nook.
The reading nook just about touches the kitchen dining bar, but the red wall beside it helps to define the separate zone.
The marble effect of the kitchen extends across its floor too, ensuring that the back wall of cabinets is securely linked with the kitchen island.
The green kitchen island inspires the decor palette of the home entryway.
A ceiling soffit spreads the green theme.
Even the inside of the closet is cohesive in colour scheme.
Red accents dominate a wild terrazzo bathroom design.
Heavy terrazzo covers not only the floor but the vanity as well.
A red faucet pops out of the wall mirror.
An unusual red framed shower screen tops off the unique look.
Designer: Archants   Visualizer: Kate Gavryliuk   Lastly, we visit a small apartment with grey and wood tone decor, which was designed for a pet-friendly couple. Bespoke furniture has been built around the perimeter to maximise the amount of floor space available for their pet–and to give fur balls nowhere to hide.
The base of the bed and built-in sofa are dedicated to storage. Steps have also been integrated into the base of the bed to assist the climb.
The side of the bed frame includes a lift-up hatch to stow away an extra throw for chilly nights. Another by the sofa is well placed for media accessories and magazines.
A photographic print of a furry friend takes pride of place at the end of the bed, next to a raw concrete pillar that gives the small bedroom a cool industrial vibe.
The small studio apartment design does not shy away from dark colours. A black kitchen makes a bold addition.
There is a peninsula that doubles as a dining area in the kitchen. A linear suspension light illuminates the eating area and kitchen sink at either end.
A terrazzo wall makes a surprising and stylish addition beside the peninsula.
Dark charcoal decor in the entryway builds a big first impression for the small home.

Retro Modern Interior Filled With Original Design Ideas
An unusual interior awaits inside this 175 square metre home in Moscow, Russia. The apartment is positively littered with a myriad of original features and ideas, designed by Mops Architecture, and accented with an unexpected palette of dark coral tones. Confetti patterned linoleum covers much of the floors and some of the walls inside this abode, which gives the place a slightly retro yet modern feel all at the same time. The sleek simplistic lines of the furniture and room layouts could have came out on the cold side, but this is fully avoided thanks to a generous amount of wood feature walls, including one impressively curvaceous example inside the lounge that’s not to be missed.
Visualizer: ONI Render   The spacious main living room evokes a sense of calm and warmth right off the bat, with soft taupe decor and a smooth curvaceous wooden feature wall. The wood grain undulates across the wall behind the sofa like a huge flag ruffling in the wind. The modern sectional sofa is split into two islands in an L-shaped formation – leaving a walkway clear for access to the kitchen.
Colourful decor accents appear around the room, dominated by varying shades of dark coral that subtly blend with the wood tone.
One of the mid century modern coffee tables has a gleaming copper top, which complements the coral tones in the space. The other coffee table top provides a black base note to match the single scatter cushion on the largest sofa and a keyboard in the corner of the room.
Textured TV wall decor is fronted with a shallow white media console. The unit is wall mounted for a clean streamlined look beneath a flat screen television. The end of the TV wall is marked by a tall mirror to break up the visual, and it’s at this point that the feature panelling becomes a bank of storage units. A slender bookcase has been recessed into the white cabinets, in a striking dark coral colourway. A small library of books has been interspersed with decorative items, which take the place of wall art in this room scheme.
By the window, an entirely different seating area has been laid out to create a reading nook of sorts. A comfortable reading chair matches the accent colour of the bespoke bookshelf, whilst a black floor lamp stands out against the white backdrop of built-in cupboards.
The little reading spot faces a small module of sectional sofa, which has been situated to divide the area from the large living room.
Extra splashes of colour come in the form of quirky ornaments that occupy the TV console unit and coffee table.
An extruded design makes up a second unusual feature wall, which is lit by track lighting. The rest of the lighting in the room is a series of recessed spots.
Moving through to the kitchen, we find that a cosy diner has been created at one side and cocooned in wood cladding. Low slung cushion seating and a pair of side tables furnish the space. Dinner parties are off the table in this booth, but tea for two is a cosy and inviting affair.
A cantilevered countertop overhangs this kitchen island idea, where four bar stools provide an opportunity to eat with a larger number of friends or family members.
In the side of the wooden booth casing, recessed white shelving has been divided into decorative cubbies. The pale finish matches the kitchen countertop and white kitchen units.
The kitchen flooring and backsplash are of the same speckled design, looking like a storm of large confetti petals are fluttering down the walls and settling upon the ground. Solid yellow bar stools stand out against the chaotic pattern. A set of unique mirrors make an unusual piece of decoration for a kitchen.
An elliptical shape forms the kitchen countertops and wall units. A sleek run of wooden units cover one entire wall, which is where an integrated oven is housed.
Three modern chandeliers hang in line above the kitchen dining island. Their gold stems and flat circular leaves match the decorative mirrors by the prep area.
More stemmed mirrors are strung from floor to ceiling in the home entryway, as well as a more conventional full length mirror.
Yet another mirror flanks the wooden doorway, where the reflection makes the modest entryway appear enormous. A boxy shelf cuts across the glass, providing a spot to set down keys and phones by the door. Modern directional lights probe through the ceiling.
Two green stools occupy the hallway, like a pair of moss covered boulders, settled on sleek chrome stands.
The confetti flooring found in the kitchen is used here again in the hallway.
A white double sink bathroom vanity arrangement stands amongst coral coloured decor. Semi-sphere basins top cylindrical white vanities. Two circular mirrors ride the chrome pipework of unique bathroom faucets that descend as one continuous length from the ceiling. An elliptical shelf unit is suspended at one side.
A heated towel ladder is ‘propped’ against the wall opposite the bathroom vanities. The false wall that houses the toilet cistern has a finish that plays on the traditional tongue and groove design. The chrome flush plate matches with a wall mounted brush and spray kit. A waterfall shower awaits inside of a custom cubicle.

4 Nifty Little Apartments
These four super small apartments all measure less than a megre 50 square metres of floor area. However fresh interior designs and neat layouts make each one of them pretty nifty in their very own particular kind of way. Learn to navigate small project spaces with clever little layouts and modern furniture designs, and by implementing crisp decor ideas to clearly define different zones of use and needs. Find a warm terracotta hued studio apartment, a deceptively spacious kitchen in Kiev, a bold blue statement piece in Odessa, and Brazilian pad that despite being the smallest of the whole collection has perhaps the most interesting use of space.
Designer: Paintit   Photographer: Alexey Yanchenkov   Apartment number one, located in Kiev, Ukraine, measures in at 47 square metres. The interior design brief came with just one requirement, which was to not go beyond the limited budget. The design team cracked on with a terracotta and white coloured decor scheme that results in a warm yet fresh feel. A cool grey sofa plays around the base of an exposed raw concrete structural support column at the centre of the room.
A border of wood effect panelling covers the lower half of the walls in the studio apartment, like a warm hug.
A custom built bed is constructed in the same wood effect material as used on the wall panelling, as is the headboard shelf and headboard feature wall. A partial room divider is fashioned out of a glass screen to make the head of the bed feel a little more cosy and separated from the open space.
The headboard shelf is sunken slightly so that a small library of books can be cradled safely without risk of falling onto anyone’s head in bed. Flexible lamps provide bedside light.
In a warm glow of terracotta coloured units and a matching backsplash, the small one wall kitchen appears its own entity in the open plan. A tiny table welcomes one diner for dinner.
A glass wall bathroom means the full amount of floor area remains in view to keep the home interior looking at its largest.
Visualizer: Taras Kaminskiy & Veronika Mulieieva   Tiny apartment number two is also a home in Kiev, this time with a slightly smaller area of just 44 square metres. The comfy seating has been picked out in a low slung floor hugging design to maximise the sense of available space in the main living area.
A trio of kitchen bar stools line up at a kitchen island directly adjacent to the sofa.
The L-shaped kitchen with island is a sleek monochrome design with a comprehensive range of units that does not feel inadequate or cramped at all, despite the compact nature of the home.
Wall cabinets are lit underneath by LED strip lights, which creates a cosy and inviting glow.
Slab doors hide amongst modern wall panelling.
Lighting is kept slimline and minimalistic in aesthetic.
Black integrated appliances, kitchen faucet and sink blend with a dark worktop.
A textured feature wall is accentuated in the bedroom by perimeter lighting at the ceiling line. Slender bedroom pendant lights descend over the bedsides. A black swing arm wall lamp provides task lighting over a desk that neighbours the bed. The home office area is separated from the sleeping area by a ceiling-to-floor curtain.
Modern artwork compliments the shades of the grey bedroom.
A beautiful vanity unit is wall mounted in the bathroom, with storage cubbies built into the countertop. A circular mirror is flanked by simple bar wall lights
Floor space is kept clear and maximised by a wall hung toilet design.
Apartment layout plan.
Architect: Sivak+Partners   Next up is a neat 50 square meter apartment in Odessa, Ukraine. The decor is a predominantly grey affair, though a bright blue sofa brings an uplifting hue.
The stand out colour of the sofa also helps to define the lounge from the adjacent sleeping area. The floor bed design has a headboard that fits the sleeping nook snugly.
Books can be stored inside the top of the headboard.
White closets line one side of the bedroom.
The wood floor ends at the edge of the combined lounge and bedroom space.
Grey tiles replace the wood floor planks as we move into the hall area.
Russet colour closets provide extra storage in the hallway of the small home.
A minimalist workspace with bespoke desk has been built around a supportive wall. The desk also acts as a room divider between the lounge and the kitchen diner.
Grey cabinets are arranged in an L-shape around a circular dining set.
A black sink and faucet give the grey kitchen a slick and serious look.
Cool white LED strips illuminate the prep area.
A wall of mirrored panels and doors increase the sense of space in the apartment.
Modern white bathroom tiles look clean and crisp in the bathroom.
The plan shows how an awkward trapezium floor plan has been conquered.
Designer: Ela   Photographer: Gui Morelli   The last apartment is located in Santa Cecília, São Paulo, Brazil. It has the most limited floor space of this collection at a compact 35 square metres. It was designed for a young couple who required a fully integrated apartment and the use of neutral colors to create a feeling of spaciousness. Compact seating without space eating arm rests has been utilised in the living area. A small side table holds a selection of books out of plain sight.
A mini eating area has been squeezed in opposite the kitchen.
The one wall kitchen budges right up against the tv wall of the lounge. By raising units off the floor it has been possible to trick the eye into seeing an uncluttered solution.
The utility area stands separately on the opposite side of the room.
Space has even been carved out for a peaceful study area just off the bedroom.
A blush coloured portiere can be drawn across the opening to the bedroom for privacy, and to block out the light from the large windows.
A framed motivational poster adorns the desk.
