I always felt so welcome in the theater world and so free.”ĭonovan said he took theater seriously “but didn’t realize where it was all headed until I was a junior in high school and my acting teacher said I could apply to a conservatory program. I got to travel around the state, seeing other folks’ plays. “In Massachusetts,” he said, “there’s this thing called the Drama Guild Festival. I loved telling stories – I’ve always been a very narrative-oriented person.” Having spent his first 7 years in Connecticut, followed by 3 years in England, and a return to Massachusetts, where he had been born, Donovan embarked upon the theater circuit. “When I was in second grade, we all did the school play,” Donovan told me. But whereas Joe is a Westerner, not highly educated, and struggling to find his place in the world, Edmund is a New Englander, well-educated (Boston University, Yale), and enamored of acting since childhood. This is not to slight Joe and Edmund’s commonalities, chief of which is that actor and character are essentially the same age. So it proved when, after having watched Edmund Donovan four times perform Joe in Greater Clements, I sat down with the actor to talk and discovered a person quite unlike the troubled 27-year-old of playwright Samuel D. There is another sense in which Wilkes’s remark can be construed: You can watch an actor many times in a role and be quite sure the man himself is, in person, very little like the character – the him - he is portraying. Of David Garrick, titan of the 18th-century London theater, his contemporary Thomas Wilkes once said: “Whenever I see him perform a role I never see HIM.” According to the literary scholar Leo Damrosch, Wilkes meant that “you could see Garrick in the same role many times, and still be overwhelmed.”

With the release of AGIT we find out that Dark Phantom really hates being called Danny.

CIVIL WAR (2024)

Civil War takes place in the very near future, a look at an America that is at war with itself and violently coming apart at the seams. It’s a dystopian wasteland with hundreds of abandoned cars, burnt out cities, gunfights punctuating the night, abandoned corpses and people turning on each other. It’s a very depressing thing to speculate about. Particularly because none of it seems all that far-fetched from where we are in history.

Interestingly, the writer/director Alex Garland doesn’t really bother with the politics of the situation. We never completely know what has caused the rift in the States – we are just plummeted into the situation with little or no understanding of the reasoning behind the conflict.

Even occasional hints are somewhat confounding. For example the force taking on the American government is apparently a coalition between the states of Texas and California – and I don’t think in reality you can find two more diametrically different States. Also the US President, as played by Nick Offerman, is somewhat reminiscent of Donald Trump, and yet in other ways he is not.

Garland seems to be saying it really doesn’t matter to the story that he is telling. Once the war has come, the causes sort of blur into the background. This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, this ain’t no fooling around.

Civil War revolves around four war correspondents who are crossing the country in a news van trying to cover the story, and hopefully get an interview with the President.

These (extremely) intrepid journalists are: Lee (Kirsten Dunst), a renowned but rather jaded photo journalist, Jesse (Cailee Spaeny), an extremely young-looking photographer who idolizes Lee and is still old-school enough to use a 35mm film camera, Joel (Wagner Moura), a writer who seems to be just a bit too excited by the warfare going on around them and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), an aging journalist who is much more circumspect and concerned about all that is going on around them.

Interestingly, although the two women are constantly taking pictures and the two men are supposedly writing the stories, they have no way of forwarding the pictures (cell coverage is gone) and they guys never seem to actually get around to writing.

However, they cheat death many times in their voyage across country to Washington DC. They realize very few people can be trusted at this point and are nearly constantly getting shot at. They also realize quickly that their press credentials are not going to keep them safe.

In general I am not a huge fan of dystopian films, but I have to admit that Civil War is a particularly gripping one, particularly in its fast-paced, danger-filled climax. The sight of Washington DC under attack, with trashed cars piled up to make barricades and missiles lighting up the night sky is disturbing, to say the least. And a brief earlier segment with Jesse Plemons as a renegade soldier deciding who is a “real American” is one of the more harrowing scenes in recent cinema.

Director Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) has been saying that Civil War will probably be his last directing job, at least for the foreseeable future. (He will probably continue on as a screenwriter.) If that is indeed the case, Civil War is a pretty good way to sign off.

EVENT : emergency lockdown

With the island still under attack, all civilians (students, faculty, and island residents) have been assigned a location on the island to shelter in. Location assignments have been sent to each phone. Characters receive only their own assignments, not the entire list.

Most guards have been summoned to fight the attackers; a handful of NPC guards have been assigned to find and deliver lost civilians to their assigned shelters; all player character guards have received orders to collect supplies from designated emergency locations and proceed to an assigned shelter to protect civilians. Guards assigned to the shelters have a list of all civilians assigned to their shelter and are expected to check each of them off on arrival.

Another explosion has left half of the dormitory building collapsed, and the other half quickly following. Characters may have been in the building when it collapsed, and escape plots/injury plots are allowed!

The island is under attack by Delphine Delecaille. While the protections were down, Delphine and many of her people made it onto the island. Among the attackers is a massive purple dragon--characters may witness the dragon flying over the island, breathing fire, but should not come up against it. They may, however, encounter as many NPC attackers of various species as you please on their way to their shelter. Characters can fight and kill NPC attackers without consulting the main and without fear of consequences!

Speaking of journeys to their shelters, your character may take any roundabout journey you like to arrive there, so long as they do, eventually, arrive there. Late arrivals are allowed. Characters may spend up to two (2) days outside of the shelter. After they arrive at the shelter, they will not be allowed out, though characters with teleportation will not be bound.

Characters will not be allowed into shelters they are not assigned to, even in the name of staying with their loved ones assigned there.

While the island is under attack, cell phones on the island are misbehaving. Texts and calls are failing 9 out of 10 times.

The protective spells have been restored, but the binding spell in particular is acting up. Bound slaves may find they have access to their powers in short spurts of up to ten or fifteen minutes at a time.

Most of the plot revolves around Wolfe running away from home and thus Edmund is going to have many consequences to his actions! Not the least of which being that he might have doomed the whole thing of Wolfe gets killed and his friends are pissed.

Jordan, who not only loves his daughter but also has had no issues with her KNOWING she’s a reborn monster, actually PUNCHES him when he explains how Wolfe was living. It is 100% no shame a sucker punch and Belladonna has to break the fight up before Nadine could try to back up her dad or Edmund could demonstrate exactly how easily he could kick Jordan’s ass in a fair fight.

I have another ask about Scarlet and Donovan so I’ll talk about them over there!

In all fairness, there was no way that the TV version of High Fidelity could be bad. The show is based on a book, that was already adapted into a movie — that I think I'll never get the courage to watch because I can only imagine how much of a brocialist the guy in there must be — and has the perfect ingredients: New York, Zoë Kravitz, and good music. It's like cooking desserts with condensed milk and chocolate: it definitely can't go wrong.

Just the same, in all fairness, it would probably take me too long to give this show a chance, since I tend to be very picky with the productions I watch because I don't want to start something that could end up a) canceled or b) with too many seasons made just to squeeze the fruit until there's nothing left. With High Fidelity, I'm almost certain I read something about it being canceled, so, if it wasn't for the song I Believe, I would have missed this perfection for all my life.

Rob is the kind of girlboss we can't help but envy. We can't deny that people like that in real life can be mesmerizing. She doesn't care what people think about her. She doesn't try too hard to be herself. She just is what she is, and she is the kind of girl that goes on a date with a cut on her hand and with a coffee stain on her shirt. Me? No… I take myself too seriously to ever do that. But seeing her doing it makes me want to do it as well. In fact, in one of the episodes she drank a whole bottle of prosecco on her balcony, and there I was, a few days before, doing the same — on a park bench, feeling super self-conscious, but I did it regardless.

One thing about High Fidelity is that this is a show that breaks the fourth wall, something I wasn't expecting so it took me a bit of adjustment, but then again, I'm constantly pretending to break the fourth wall in my daily basis like the main character I am, so I don't even know why I thought the show would be good without it. Even so, sometimes I feel like someone should try this whole talking-with-the-viewer thing without looking at the camera, as if the character is just speaking to himself without anyone noticing. It could be something different. I just think they missed the opportunity to show someone noticing Rob talking to us, like it once happened in Fleebag, but maybe that would've been too on the nose.

Basically, Rob spends the ten episodes coming back and forth to her top 5 heartbreak list, which I found genius (I can totally see myself doing that), and we meet lots of doubtful ex-lovers, especially Mac, who is so… meh. Love is stupid, after all. Before finishing the show, I read a spoiler that led me to believe she would end up with him (maybe in the movie it's like that?), but thank God she didn't — even though it could have happened, since the season ended with a potential storyline there, even having a decent finale for a canceled show.

In total, we have 10 incredible episodes, with no one feeling like a filler (although the episode featuring the encounter with the eccentric wife selling records came close) but honestly, even if the series consisted of 23 episodes, each lasting 40 minutes like they used to in the old days, it still wouldn't be enough for me. One of the episodes is from the point of view of her best friend, Simon, which was a good change (especially because it showed another perspective on the day we previously saw on a Rob episode), but that felt pointless because her other friend, the awesome Cherise, didn't have the same treatment. She would've absolutely killed in one themed episode just for her, because she is just the best. Coming back to Simon, I have to say, how jealous I am that he found someone like Blake. He's just… so perfect. The actor, Edmund Donovan, is incredible and so familiar, so I gasped when I discovered I had watched Akron with him (and fell in love there as well).

It turned out that Da'vine doesn't sing her version of I Believe on the show, which is another fucking waste, but what a nice surprise was to discover that Thomas Doherty sings. Just like his character on the disastrous Gossip Girl reboot, he's so charming and sexy, and being a singer is just the icing on the cake. Ergh, lucky Rob. But at the end of the day, I was #TeamClyde all the way because how can't you not be with Jake Lacy being there, right?

As with any other New York show, High Fidelity made me love the city even more. It made me want to be there so bad and to have friends like Rob, to go crazy and wild. I feel so uptight sometimes, I wish I could be a messed-up trainwreck like she is, even though I kind of am. Or used to be, since I'm trying to be the best version of myself for my mental health. So I guess I can settle for being a record store owner. The list of intense heartbreak I already have, anyway.
