Chiming in to back up the point of rehydration packets and electrolyte balance, speaking from experience as someone who both lives in a hot environment (Texas) and also suffers from having a stomach that responds to any mild disturbance of the equilibrium with ‘EJECT’. Personal story time to whack the message home.
I suffered a cyclic vomiting episode while visiting a mountain reserve and wound up spending several hours unable to move due to severe abdominal spasms from dehydration. I thought I was having diarrhea at first, only to realize that wasn’t a case, and had to belly crawl across the 10 feet of bathroom floor to the shower while leaving a trail of clothes behind me to manage to stretch up and turn the hot water on and get it on my abdomen for some pain relief because it was 4am and I was too weak to call for help. I had been drinking water while sick, but I’m from a very low elevation area and didn’t realize how fast I was losing water and electrolytes; end result, my electrolyte levels got so low I was unable to stand up straight for over two days afterwards. I had just finished having a bout of a vomiting condition whose other defining symptom is pain and I was in so much agony I was crying. I was unable to stand upright for over 48 hours afterwards.
You need water, yes, but you also need electrolytes. Most of the time, water or any other general fluid works fine! You get enough electrolytes from your food to keep you going and the water’s all you need. But, if you’re not used to hot weather, or high elevations like me, you’re not going to accurately know when you’re okay and when you’re in a bad situation. You can’t tell what is normal levels of water loss and what is cause for concern.
And hell, sometimes you fuck up and make mistakes even in an environment you are used to! Sometimes you’re not paying attention, or things happen, and something you thought you had under control isn’t. I’ve been fortunate enough to have gone several years with a cyclic vomiting attack now, but I can still get sick, and my stomach still jumps to vomiting as the solution to any slight ailment, and I keep electrolyte solution in my apartment just in case.
Water is important, but if we’re genuinely discussing staying hydrated, we can’t leave out how important electrolytes are to that. They’re not hard to get, either, you can find them at most stores. Water, water everywhere, every drop to drink, certainly. But in order to stay properly hydrated you have to make sure you maintain your electrolyte levels too.
You’re certainly not going to need it every day, but if you’re experiencing a level of dehydration you’re not used to; abnormally hot weather, illness, high elevation; please, make sure you can replenish your electrolytes too. Don’t end up like I did. (I suffered a similar incident several months later and had to be brought to the hospital for fluids. I should have gone then as well but I was stubborn and poor.)
Drink water, but if it’s getting bad, remember that there’s more to you than fresh water, and make sure you can replenish the rest of you too.
