rewatching elementary now with the knowledge Jonny Lee Miller had started with his own sobriety and recovery whilst filming is honestly transcendent. He is so GOOD. he is gut-wrenching. The scene where Sherlock explains his sobriety feels like a leaking faucet that requires constant maintenance and offers only not to drip in return - jlm does this thing with his voice where he's on the verge of tears but bored all at once. He's wrecked by a feeling he's utterly sick to death of having. It's such a compassionate performance. On another level it is truly crazy to me that we have so many Sherlock Holmes adaptations so eager to make Sherlock an addict, but Elementary is far and away the only adaptation that does that and takes the addiction seriously. Perhaps in part because of JLM's real life recovery, but we'll never know. On a rewatch, it's a lot :')

Way back, when I first watched Elementary, I wasn't quite feeling it in the beginning, because it felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be Not!Sherlock.

But then comes the scene, where Sherlock reveals, he knew why Watson changed her career and I was sold.

The entire time up to that point he was dismissive and rude to her. She was nothing more than a nuisance to him, being a "junkie sitter" hired by his father, whom he despises.

Right at the beginning he does a cold read on her and mocks her for switching careers from surgeon to sober companion, a job she clearly doesn't care for and, according to Sherlock, only took, because someone close to her OD'd.

Watson doesn't deny or confirm it, until later into the episode, where she tries to use his false assessment against him.

Only then does he interrupt her reveal and tell her that he knows, she did it, because she lost a patient due to a mistake. He just didn't say it, because it seemed to be a sensitive topic.

The fact that this man actually had a fucking filter instantly endeared me to the show.

The thing that’s so wonderful about Elementary is that it *does* the whole “Sherlock Holmes, rude misanthropic genius” schtick, but it DOESN’T STOP THERE. Sherlock IS a rude misanthropic genius, but he IS also capable of deep love, and he WORKS HARD to express it for the people he loves! It is incredibly endearing to watch Sherlock cook lasagna for Watson, advise her of the optimal temperature to eat it, and then sit stiffly next to her prepared to lockjaw his way silently through an entire Knicks game bc he WANTS TO BE GOOD TO HER. He takes pains to precisely and clearly communicate his support for her choices, even if she chooses to be away from him!

And IT JUST MAKES ME SO WARM about Sherlock, because despite how Sherlock claims that he is ONLY soft for Watson, Sherlock is genuinely *becoming a better person* as the show progresses by forming relationships with Captain Gregson, with Marcus, with Alfredo, with Kitty! “Misanthropy was so easy,” Sherlock mourns once, and I LOVE THAT LINE bc yes! It IS easier to just make Sherlock a rude ass misanthropist and nothing more! It’s HARD for him to open up! But he makes the fucking effort, because it is worth it and the show continually reinforces that.

He's a very important Sherlock Holmes actor for me, perhaps the most important there is. And it has nothing to do with how accurate his portrayal is to how Holmes is depicted in Doyle's stories.

poor baby man is fucking off (good riddance, i'm sorry, i know they're trying to make mycroft a sympathetic character but he is just too pathetic and annoying for me–i just can't connect to anyone who spends that much time wallowing about how much of a poor sacrificing noble man they are)

watson is moving out because she needs space for her own life which. maybe i'm just upset because i like their insane relationship but it feels like such a strange decision. none of the experiences she's had trying to have a normal life have worked so far, and maybe she's blaming that on living with sherlock but. she's committed to something that makes her happy, and seems to be under the impression she can keep that the same and have a normal life.

sherlock is maybe using again and also joined mi6? nothing to say about this other than what the fuck. okay i guess. sure.
