08. Blanche - “City lights” Belgium 2017
youtube
[2017 Review here]
~Ol aloing indu daignur zoin~
I can’t think of a hook more appropriate for Blanche because her journey was such a thriller.
But let us first discuss the obvious: “City lights” is nothing less than a brilliant song. It’s a dark, moody, innovative synthpop masterpiece. Like “Sebi” and many others in this higher-than-high section, it is a touching, immersive trip through the best modern music has on offer. Blanche is perfectly cast, providing an ethereal yet deep voice that conveys pure vulnerability. As the Polish commentor reportedly pointed out, ‘you can hear the tears in her voice.’
Tumblr media
and of course, it also features SuRie’s voice for that extra bit of kickass:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, we are mostly here because of the journey, one which, I don’t think anyone could argue that, was quite epic: From scalping ALL of Europe once her song was leaked, to having a series of calamitous rehearsals Blanche experienced a huge rise and an even bigger fall in the span of a full month. People turned on her left and right, as they normally do whenever they smell defeat.
Tumblr media
But remember, what do we say to the god of death? Not today.
Right at the very last moment, Blanche found her courage, found her voice, found herself as a performer and turned it around completely. You can actually pinpoint the exact moment where she experiences the epiphany in the SF, which I’ve gif’ed for convenience:
Tumblr media
It was STILL a thriller going forward, but once she qualified she was back on the map as a serious contender, however as an underdog instead of an overdog. She wouldn’t win, but nevertheless made everyone who believed in her proud of being a Blanche fan.
So ultimately, "City lights” is much more to me than just a really good song. It’s a mesmerizing tale -a passion in the biblical sense- of someone so crippingly shy and perfectionistic she almost succumbed to the massive pressure and just like that, turned it around into something golden. You may not like that a shy 17 year old with no experience lacks the confidence of the others and if you do, it’s your loss! Out of all the contestants on this list, it is Blanche that I’m the most proud of.
~small OT addendum~
PS: My friends also were heavily invested in Blanche’s journey and it actually resulted in her becoming a meme on our Discord server. Basically, they would spam blanche-related emoji’s and pasta’s everywhere until they (the memes, not the posters) got banned by the admins. The Blanche Wars between those who watch Eurovision and and those who don’t still haven’t fully subsided yet, but what our side has learned to become creative with our spamfolder offenses:

Lol. I mean, obviously, as a Belgian I’m a bit biased, right? But in reality this mostly translates to having strong opinions, which results in either very high rankings or very low ones. Having said that, Belgium was pretty good in this decade and we’ve got the Loïc/Tesoro/Blanche streak to thank for that. The past five years we’ve sending in great songs, though we must forever remain mindful of the live staging, which is our Achilles heel.

07. Poli Genova - “If love was a crime” Bulgaria 2016
youtube
THEY’LL NEVER BREAK US DOWN!
Lol I realize Poli hasn’t officially come out of the closet yet, but come on this is a Coming Out Anthem, right? “If love was a crime, then we would be criminals, locked up for life, but I’ll do the time ;-)” mhm yesssss get that tit’n’clit, girl. The only context where such a song would be more at place at is a Rainbow Pride Parade.
Tumblr media
All of this pro-LGBT empowerment is AMAZING obviously, but “If love was a crime” is an amazing, flamboyant party song at its core. It is a great composition that builds up its fiesta momentum at a *lightning fast* pace and never lets go of its tempo. Add in a wonderful dork dance,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Airstrip apparel
Tumblr media
and an EPIC final chorus,
Tumblr media
and indifference becomes an impossible feat.  “If love was a crime” is stupidly good at being fun and frankly puts every other funmonger to shame. Not to mention that Poli herself is AT HER BEST. This performance stands out as her most magnetic one. Not only is her song a near-religious revelation, she also has immense fun herself while performing it. *That* is the difference between a merely great entry and an all-time best one. OH DAI MI LYUBOVTA, BABY.
BULGARIA
Tumblr media
Mathematically the best chart out of everbody and I mean, look at those shades of green. This was a great decade for Bulgaria after a really mediocre one in the 00s.
I will however say that I don’t consider them the best country in this decade. Because A of all, the best country is Estonia and B of all it’s way easier to have a higher average if you have only 7 entries to rate as opposed to 10. Take away the three lowest of Estonia, Slovenia and Moldova and they easily beat Bulgaria in the overal list.
TOP 6

What are the odds that Belgium will be the last country announced to have qualified in Semi Final 1?
Especially after Loïc/Austria, Laura/Sweden and Blanche/Ukraine...

Trees and bees|| Blanche & Kristian Kostov
TREES AND BEES || BLANCHE & KRISTIAN KOSTOV
“Hey Blanche.” Kristian calls for me. He oh-so-conveniently happened to be my neighbour with the tree-planting.
“Hmm?”
“I think mine looks better than yours.” He says, eyeing both mine and his own tree, which were now planted and had our names with it.
I scoff at him, “Definitely not.” I say and place my hand on his arm shortly,  “But you tried.” I say and shoot him a sympathising smile.
Kristian’s hand flies up to his chest and over his heart, faking to be hurt. “Ouch.”
I do everything not to burst out laughing.
“Is your ego damaged now?” I ask him. a sarcastic tone in my voice.
He grins at me. “Certainly not.”
Right then, interviewers came up to us, asking for a quick chat with Kristian. He agreed and I took my chance to get away.
I was done for today and decided to head back to the hotel, and plan on spending the rest of my day there.
“Hey Blanche.” I hear his familiar voice call for me once again.
“You again, Kristian?” I grin at him.
He throws his arm around my shoulders, “Do you get pleasure out of trying to hurt my feelings?” he jokes.
“How’d you guess?”
“I don’t know, just a feeling I suppose.” He replies.
Kristian drops his arm from around my shoulders, “Anyway, do you want to go do something together?”
I didn’t expect him to ask that, resulting in me standing there and looking at him dumbfounded for a few seconds before I see a huge grin form on his face.
“Oh, get that off your face.”
“I do not know what you are talking about.” He says innocently.
I roll my eyes at him, “Of course you don’t. Anyway, what did you want to go do?” I ask.
“Eh, I didn’t really think of that yet. Just be ready at 7, I’ll come and get you.” He says and before I can agree or protest, he is already gone.
I walk back to my own hotel room with a weird feeling in my stomach that I wasn’t able to identify yet.
I glance at the watch that is on my wrist and see that it’s already 6, meaning that I only had an hour to prepare myself for whatever was coming.
At exactly 7 I’m done. Only seconds later I hear a knock at the hotel door, and I realise that it must be Kristian.
“You look nice, miss.” He says once I’ve opened the door.
“Well, thank you. You too.” I say, and let him lead the way to whereever we were going.
It ended up being a small and cozy restaurant.
“I hate to say this, but it’s really nice Kristian.” I tell him, and immediately regret it. The look on his face was enough. “Oh stop that.”
“I’m not even doing anything.” He defends himself.
“Oh, whatever. Let’s just go eat dinner.”
I’m surprised at how easy our conversation was flowing. It almost felt like we were long lost friends and had years of catching up to do.
“I have more for you, though.” Kristian says as soon as we walk out the restaurant.
“You do? What is it?” I ask surprised. I had expected that we were going back to our hotel now, but apparently that was not the case.
“Shh. Just follow me.” He says, not giving away anything. He starts to walk in some direction, and not wanting to be stranded in the middle of a country that I didn’t know, I quickly followed him.
We walk together in silence for some time, until Kristian speaks up.
“Who would’ve thought you could have so much fun with me, huh?” Kristian says and hits my shoulder softly.
“Who says I was having fun though?”
“Oh come on, don’t go and deny it now. Not a chance in hell you didn’t have fun with me.”
At this point I, too, couldn’t hold back a smile anymore. Either way, I still wasn’t going to give him what he wanted to hear. “Meh. It was alright.” I say and shrug my shoulders.
Kristian stops walking, leaving us both standing there at the middle of a bridge, “Alright? You’re calling me alright?”
“I just did, didn’t I?” I dare him by setting one step into his direction.
He smirks at me, and mimics my actions, setting one step closer to me.
“So, just to confirm, you’re saying that tonight wasn’t fun at all?” He says michieviously.
I nod my head and Kristian decides to get even closer, our bodies almost touching now. “Not even now?” he asks.
I shake my head.
Kristian wrappes his arms around my neck, moving his head the tiniest bit closer to me. “How about now?”
“No.” I stammer, and instantly get mad at myself for letting him affect me like this.
He smiles, and moves his head even closer to mine just so are lips almost touch. Any movement from either him or me would make it that they did.
“I’ll ask one more time,” He starts, “Did you have fun with me tonight?"
Without thinking I nod my head softly, at this point just wanting him to kiss me already. But instead of doing that, he backs away and grins proudly. “See.” he says, “I knew you enjoyed yourself.”
“Oh fuck you.” I say, and grab the collar of his shirt pulling him closer to me and pressing my lips to his.
Seemingly surprised by my actions, it takes Kristian a few seconds to react. But then he wraps his arms back around me and moves his lips in sync with mine.
[ tell me if you want a part two, cause I kind of want to write one ]

1. BELGIUM
Blanche - “City Lights” 4th place
youtube
And so it ends... it only took me TWO MONTHS good lord.
I’m not going to beat around the bush here. The choice to put Blanche at the top of this ranking was easy. There hasn’t been a contestant in a WHILE whose journey I’ve been THIS invested in. (the last time was Tinkara in 2014; ESC rewarding her with a spot in the finale on my BIRTHDAY was the best bday gift I ever received ;__;).
I suppose there *IS* the universal (and not entirely unfounded) criticism that Blanche played a lesser version of the Aminata game and... I don’t remember if i’ve mentioned it before, but I really fucking love Aminata? Even a “watered-down Love Injected” is EASILY the best entry of the year for me, #SorryNotSorry. (though she’s more like Lisa Miskovsky i m o)
There are several things which attract me to Blanche. The Staging, for instance. Sure, it *could* have been better. Did It need to be better? Nah. We were always getting this top four, in that particular order, so it’s fine. The backdrop and lighting were spot on and provided the dynamism it needed. It also features my personal favourite visual effect: Floortile Sorcery:
Tumblr media
Mesmerising
I also really love Blanche as a hume. I have a soft spot for the Bèta Introverted Band Geek type of contestant because they feel so disarmingly out-of-place (cf.: Salvador and JOWST, but also past contestants like Tinkara Kovac, Jónsi or Aud Wilken). Blanche shines not in spite her inate lack of star power but because of it. She’s relatable and real. She remains *herself* and in doing so, endeared an entire continent. In other words, she is everything Salvador fans claim Salvador is.
Tumblr media
So, about ~That Journey~ or as I would like to call it:
The PASSION OF THE BLANCHE
Blanche is often compared to a wallflower, a lamb, a deer-in-the-headlights, bland, dead-eyed, emotionless and sombre. I would agree had I not rewatched.
Tumblr media
On rewatch it became clear to me that Blance was, in fact, arguably the most passionate out of everyone, albeit not within the usual meaning of “intense emotion”, but in the ancient Biblical sense of “experiencing an extensive period of intense suffering”. <3
Naturally, this upset the Value Seeker part of the community who were DEMANDING a Fierceness Injection, but lol I mean Blanche isn’t Aminata and she never will be, deal? She is an introverted, camera-shy schoolgoer who spent most of her interview time looking at her feet  or tripping over the English Language (btw: best Frenglish ever? Yes, defo) If she had tried to pull off “fierce” she’d have failed and flopped and been OUT in the semifinal.
Tumblr media
Instead, the Belgian delegation did the most clever thing they ever could have done. They profiled Blanche as vulnerable, desperate, afraid to lose her lover and it worked. The Key change at the end is sublime, symbolizing the BREAK OUT from her icy shell, as she feels her romance slipping through her fingers. Do we *know* the panic, the desperation, the guilt which sets in when such a thing happens? Blance portrayed that perfectly and I was feeling it. So, I’m not bothered that she looks “terrified”; It’s part of her act, you ghouls. Do you think THIS is the face of a scarity-cat shrew?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I see is a focused young woman who knows precisely what she’s doing. (although the hand gestures are still awks lol but you can’t have everything)
But the Martyrdom of Blanche Christ wasn’t just self-inflicted. She also pulled us, the diehards (you’re still reading about Eurovision in JULY. don’t deny it.) into the ordeal from the second “City Lights” was revealed, which is an extraordinary feat.
You see, there has been a distinct pattern among the Fourth Placers ever since 2013. They always, ALWAYS start out as universally beloved top contenders for their modernized, edgy, too-good-for-Eurovision songs. Then, they have underwhelming rehearsals in which their ratings plummet only to get it together and finish in the top four anyway. Blanche’s journey is precisely that, except she took it to dizzying extremes.
Tumblr media
From the moment of the song reveal, the netizen fan community (myself included) took a huge interest in her. No surprise, considering the song is the best (like, it was the fave among pretty much ALL of her fellow competitors. slayage <3), her voice is exceptional and she’s from Top Tier Eurovision Nation Belgium (lmfao @ this being a statement I can type w/o any irony. Well I’d never!).
Naturally, as is bound to happen with pre-show faves, she was the locus of many netizen meltdowns over the course of the pre-show.
From #BadVoiceGate to #WhiteDressGate, #EmptyStagingGate and #ScaredLambGate, Blanche unwittingly fed our collective anxiety and paranoia, taking us for an emotional rollercoaster ride. The Blanche Experience was like watching a psychological drama unfold before our very eyes, with setback after setback after setback gutpunching us towards Bergendahlland until our Heroine, FINALLY, prevailed against all odds and finished in the top anyway. I don’t know about you, but for me, it was a catharsis. Everyone else’s journey pales in comparison to this epic saga of personal growth, intimacy and downright good music.
In short,

BLANCHE
I want to speak out to all the people that hate on Blanche because she didn’t give such an ‘impressive’ performance while singing. But the fact that she is ‘alone in the danger zone’ combined with her husky voice and her insecure facial expressions is what makes this performance one of the best in Eurovision history. I’m happy that she is fourth although imo, she deserved to be in the top 3. Go go Ellie Delvaux!

It was but a month ago that we first encountered Ellie Delvaux, a 19 year old Belgian singer songwriter who releases music under the mononymous moniker Blanche. She enthralled us with her rich, smoky voice on Wrong Turn, and now she continues to spellbind her on new track Soon, out now via PIAS. The flittering gem is beautiful and intimate, exuding much delicate sophistication and willowy bewitchment. Blanche describes the song as being “for all the moments this summer when you’ll feel less like dancing.” We turn, twist, and wind to its rippling strings, marching drums, and Blanche’s exquisite voice, dancing in our own way to the gorgeously vernal and snowy pastoral ballad. Soon can also be streamed via Spotify, here. Blanche will embark on a series of live dates this summer/fall, mainly back home in Belgium but in the Netherlands, Austria, and Luxembourg, too.

Like many ranking high on this list, Zoë’s journey started in uncertainty. I don’t know what is about frivolous paperthin songs like these that make people dismiss their chances, but either way, many considered poor Zoë a borderline qualifier. I however, always knew she would make the finals 😊 And you know why? Because positivity, bitches.
Tumblr media
From Naviband to Lake Malawi to Laura Tesoro, Eurosnobs have a penchant for underrating “Happy Songs”, writing them off as silly and shallow. True, joy is a fairly simple empotion. Does that make it any less valuable however? Too often do we take happiness for granted. Zoë radiates mirth from every pore, adorably sprinkling her viennese fairy dust everywhere with every twirl, conjuring upside down frowns on even the grouchiest faces.
Tumblr media
So basically, “Loin d’ici” is such a refreshing breath of air because it is so unpretentiously carefree. It isn’t bogged down by the strict standards that the musical industry imposes on so-called “quality songs”. Yes, “Loin d’ici” is repetitive and frivolous and has no deep underlying meaning (other than a shallow narrative about some faraway land), but it doesnt need to be anything else. Its mere existence makes people happy and I can’t think of a better quality in a song.

69. IMRI - “I feel alive” Israel 2017
youtube
[2017 Review here]
Yes, that’s right “LIVE at the semifinal”. We rate songs according to their best performance here. (when it suits my interests 😈), which conventiently allows me to skip over IMRI’s awful finale performance. 😈 However... Imri’s voice breaking to pieces 😍 Self-prophesized irony is the best sort of irony.

Pictured: a metaphorical representation of IMRI’s vocal capabilities
Anyway, am I the only person who fucking LOVES Imri Ziv? I can’t be the only one, right? Leg-day skipping, sexually ambiguous (totally gay) meathead <3 There are two distinct reasons why I love him. The first and more obscure reason is his song. I mean, “I feel alive” is trashy mediterranean dance pulp 😍 with a wacky choreography 😍 and an underlying message that is about Imri’s ESC trajectory,😍 in which he has now pulled a hattrick 😍 Anthems of autofellation 😍 “I feel alive” made for a FANTASTIC closer, setting Kyiv en fuego with its dutiful dance droning.
As for the second reason, well,..

68. Michela - “Chameleon” Malta 2019

I am still in shock at how GREAT “Chameleon” ended up being. I mean, I had my reservations for the song but give her WATER, SHE’S A SWIMMER
Tumblr media
GIVE HER FIRE, SHE’S A FIGHTER
Tumblr media
GIVE HER LOVE, SHE’S A LOVER
Tumblr media
SHE NEVER WALKS AWAY NA NA
Tumblr media
Other than the cutting edge, mesmerizing staging that totally SOLD me on the song and beyond, there is of course Michela herself. Now, I have read a TON of criticism about her performance “EW SHE’S SO WOODEN AND CLUNKY AND NERVOUS NOT CONFIDENT AT ALL EW EW EW DIE” which... only endeared here even more to me lmfao. Like, Michela wasn’t born a lioness like Bilal and ZENA were. She is an introverted eighteen year old who won X-Factor Malta performing only ballads, it is NORMAL to not feel perfectly at ease if you were in her shoes. SHOW SOME EMPATHY!!. You think people would learn from Ellie “Blanche” Delvaux (that shy teenagers have plenty of charisma not in spite of their vulnerability, but because of it), but I suppose they enjoy getting smacked in the face with the truthhammer when their objects of hate prove their undisputed awesomeness.

67. Eugent Bushpepa - “Máll” Albania 2018
youtube
[2018 Review here]
Eugent was is another of those entries I kind of overlooked during the preshow and ended up AWESOME. Though he comes with the advantage that I already liked his song prior the live show. Never the less, being Albania in the Red Wedding Semi, I had already resigned myself to his inevitable NQ though when suddenly
out of nowhere
he fucking OWNED the Altice Arena?
Tumblr media
and I mean, I was in shock because um HELLO who are you and where were you all this time?? Of course, “Mall” is a good song in itself, a typical Albanian song: a quirky rock ballad that toes the line between dated and avant garde (though in this case it’s definitely *more* avant garde than dated), shot with cinematic precision.
Tumblr media
However the main draw to “Mall” is obviously Eugent’s voice. Holy shit I swear this is something I don’t normally care about but Eugent hit the entire vocal spectrum with it, bullseye. He did things with his voice I never thought a human could do. It’s like Anja Nissen... on crack and if Anja Nissen had a good song, likable personality and epic sense of fashion.
So, the conclusion I want to draw here is... is this the best male vocal performance of the decade? It might very well be.

shouts to @admanholmo for reading and commenting regularly on my blog! I hope you’re not to disappointed I booted your favourite, but #67 isn’t too bad I think! Onward to (slightly) better things

66. Minus One - “Alter Ego” Cyprus 2016
youtube
Entering with what is one of the BEST opening shots ever in a Eurovision song:
Tumblr media
Minus One may appear underwhelming, being ranked right after Eugent and being in a year that has 😍NIKA KOCHAROV😍 in it, but holy shit I was INSTANTLY hooked by that epic close up and never gave up, nor gave in.  Actually that’s a lie because I fell in love with “Alter Ego” the SECOND it was released. 🤭 Thomas G:sson is often credited for penning “Euphoria” but his best genre is -without question- schlager. And yes, this wonderful, unique, beautiful blend of metal and schlager is exactly what WE ALL NEED in our lives. Denying it is pointless. BE SWEPT AWAY by the EPILEPSY

and just the general dark, moody INSANITY:

WE’RE CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAWN AND THE SUNRISE LIFE IS A MIRACLE I SAW IT IN YOUR EYES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am not in love with Cyprus in this decade, nor do I think they were particularly good even though Eleni may make it appear that way. Cyprus have always been one of the most middling ESC nations to me, but it’s worth nothing that their highs are usually much higher than their lows are low. It’s just a question of getting highs consistently, which Cyprus normally don’t because the hellenic budget usually goes to Greece instead. With Greece going through a dark age however, I think they could reap the benefits and even clinch another top five soon though.

[News] Blanche: dritte Single “Soon”!
Tumblr media
Beinahe stripped down - in jedem Fall minimalistisch - untermalt der Song Blanches dunkles Timbre.
Sie selbst sagt, “Soon” sei “for all the moments this summer when you’ll feel less like dancing.
Blanche spielt neben einer Reihe Konzerten in Benelux auch eine Show in Wien:
23.11. A-Wien - Chelsea Club
