This time, it feels like the beginning of something extraordinary.

Hey wonderful Mods! Have any of you read any amazing books lately that you'd recommend? :)
Highly recommend Nuclear Family by Joseph Han! one of us just tore through it.
Another member of our steering committee just finished Pageboy by Elliot Page (we have both ebook & audiobook) & said it was very good.
& one other member of our team is loving the middle grade audiobook Ellie Engle Saves Herself!

have you seen this kat? what are your thoughts? twitter com/PublishersWkly/status/1384129772578504713?s=20
1) why are the three pics in the tweet all white women?
reminds me of the time Hafsah Faizal, a niqabi, was cut out of a Pub Weekly announcement tweet in which she was a main feature of the article they were tweeting about
2) i am so tired of more and more of publishing shifting to IP projects over original works:
Though a portion of Hyperion Avenue’s list will be developed in-house, Agurto stressed that the company is looking to publish authors outside the Disney family. “We are 100% in acquisition mode,” she added.
yes, this is happening more and more, especially in children’s publishing.
3) this is nice to hear:
Recent acquisitions include two books by Leah Johnson; the first in the series, Ellie Engle Saves Herself, is set to be released in spring 2023.
but also? Disney needs to stay the fuck out of publishing. it has its fingers in way too many pies and we don’t need publishing to be reduced even further (what with S&S as well as HMH being enveloped into other publishing houses) and make it even harder to get published. yes, you’re allowed and encouraged to sub to multiple imprints in any given publishing house, but the reduced number of publishers is going to make publishing even more elusive to anyone not In The Know/Bountiful With Connections/Already Famous

Do you perhaps have any recommendations for middle grade novellas?
Official novellas aren't really big in the kidlit space, but Alice Austen Lived Here by Alex Gino is actually short enough to qualify at 143 pages, and in general, the author is a great go-to for short queer/trans MG - Melissa, Rick, and their upcoming Green are all well under 300 pages as well. Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender is also relatively short at 240 pages, and Meow or Never by Jazz Taylor, at 256, and just under 300 are Ellie Engle Saves Herself by Leah Johnson, Cattywampus by Ash Van Otterloo, and Drew LeClair Gets a Clue by Katryn Bury.
If you'd like to go even shorter, consider This is Our Rainbow, ed. by Katherine Locke and Nicole Melleby, which is a collection of queer MG short stories!
