THEY ARE HERE!!! I'm very excited to finally share the full designs hope you guys like them <3

These are only like a base, they'll wear more layers on top and have more weapons and armor some times (and like, wear other clothes) but I wanted to have at least one reference for myself that I can use and later on work on top of and give them more outfits (playing dolls with them basically)

I had a lot of thought behind the designs so if you're interested, there's an infodump below the cut. It's very long and messy so read at your own risk

I tried to have some sort of historical accuracy (even if it's a fictional story and the exact time period when it happens is ??) mainly bc I'm tired of how celts are portrayed in media (they wore tacky colors please stop with the grey brown leathers fur), and a bit bc I'm a nerd and I can't do anything if I don't do some research before.

On the other hand I wanted to make good character designs that told things about the characters and stuff, so I had to juggle a bit both things. Plus there's not much variation in clothing styles, so I had to do what I could.

I wanted to use colors, jewelery and styles to group or distinguish the characters. So Láeg and Emer wear a very similar color palette, Cú Chulainn has some blue in his mainly red outfit (and also the under tunic thing resembles Emer's) and Ferdia has some red in his mainly blue one.

Láeg and Cú Chulainn wear the same kind of thing, but I gave Cú Chulainn more layers in reference to the 34683 shirts thing. I went no pants wider belt for Ferdia bc honestly I didn't know how else to make a clear distinction as "this one character is from a different place", there's only so much you can do with the few styles there are.

Jewelery choices! This was a lot bc I really like torcs and I wanted to use them again to give Ulster characters and Connacht characters different kinds of torcs. My first instinct was to give Connacht those very heavy ones that have rings at the ends, but then I did some research and those were only found in england so. Then I went to look what kind of torcs were found in each place and I found that they were the same!!! Obviously!!! Bc they are next to eachother!!!

So I took creative choices and as I found some bracelets in Ulster that looked like torcs I went okay those done (plus they are way easier to draw) And I gave Ferdia the spirally one and Cú Chulainn the "bracelet" one. Plus gave a matching bracelet to Láeg. Emer wears a lunula bc her father is described as wearing one in The Hound of Ulster and I liked it.

Also important, the headpiece Láeg wears. I used to draw Cú Chulainn with a similar one just because I liked it, but then after reading I liked that Láeg is the only one wearing it. At first I was going to give Emer a similar one but in the end decided against it to make it exclusive to Láeg and to not give her more jewelery than to Ferdia. I wanted Ferdia to wear a lot and be like, more stylish I guess bc I feel he cares about that stuff (I mean part of the bribe to fight Cú Chulainn was a brooch so)

And I think that's it! Sorry it was a lot hfasjkd but I wanted to share it. If there's something I have missed and you're curious to know about feel free to ask! I might have a long ass answer like this or it might be just because XD And if you have comments or opinions they are also welcome! I'm no expert or anything (just a big nerd) so I apreciate any insight.

Bc I need a pick me up and I also just had surgery, I give you an AU where Rae manages to get the vipers to the modern world

Here’s some things that I think they’d do

Key wants to teach Rae’s ex a lesson. She has to talk him down from his original ideas. They settle for egging his car to start.

It takes a while, but Marius no longer thinks of cars as these hulking metal beasts to fear. He actually learns to drive and ofc is a big stickler for the rules. What he does fear is Eric’s driving.

After getting over the scandal of it all, Emer takes to wearing pants. Especially sweatpants and leggings now that she’s learned about the gym and the myriad of sports she can try out. She is absolutely not wearing anything with writing on the butt, no matter how much Rae and Eric insist on them all matching.

They immediately take Lia to the optometrist and she gets decision paralysis trying to pick out a set of frames. The other vipers help, Eric and Rae picking a few that are far too flashy in her opinion. She ends up with a simple pair and is elated. The other two convince her to get prescription sunglasses with snakes on them though.

They go to the grocery and are in complete awe of all the options readily available. Marius and Emer are taken aback by the junk food and sweets that the others try at Rae and Eric’s suggestion. Marius, Emer, and Key immediately take to coffee and buy plenty. Marius won’t admit that he bought the huge tub of vanilla ice cream.

Rae has a horror movie marathon with Key. Ofc he calls out all the dumb decisions and says he could defeat the killers easily. Rae doesn’t doubt that he could if he figured out a way into their stories. Key is especially nitpicky when it comes to zombie movies.

They go to the club. Marius guards drinks while the others dance. Some guys make a pass at Lia, Rae steps in, they make a pass at her, and it takes all the vipers to stop Key from committing murder. There’s still a bar fight though. Lia’s tears help them narrowly avoid getting kicked out with the other guys.

They go to a convention and are simultaneously amazed and horrified by the number fans. Eric insists on dressing up as himself so he can properly meet all of them. He also buys plenty of art with himself and Marius. Key doesn’t think that the art of his lady captures her well enough.

They scheme their way into the Eras Tour (Key found a scalper and threatened them). Rae goes in the Reputation bodysuit much to the appreciation of Key who wears black to match. Eric is bedazzled from head to toe and Marius is convinced to wear a tshirt. Lia tries a dress with cowboy boots and Emer decorates a denim jacket. They all wear friendship bracelets. Key shows off the one Rae made him. Meanwhile, Marius refused to wear one till Eric feigned being heartbroken. Lia took to making them very fast, so she and Emer carry basket fulls.

Key gets into video games. He lets Rae win more often than she thinks, just to make her happy. She doesn’t know that he’s quickly becoming one of the top esports players in the country.

Marius learns about Eric’s lost love Netflix. He likes the documentaries and such. He’s horrified by Bridgerton.

Rae teaches them the Hot to Go dance. Lia loves it and Emer takes some convincing. She does like Chapell Roan and Good Luck Babe really gets to her.

Musical numbers aren’t uncommon. No one is surprised when Rae and Eric, or even Lia, burst into song. Everyone is a little surprised when they catch Key singing. Rae isn’t surprised that he likes Heathers of all things.

Artist’s Note: Regarding her ascensions, I had a hard time picturing what her preceding ones would look like. I mostly use some bits of the story as my reference. The 1st ascension is pretty much her princess attire, while the 2nd is supposed to be her outfit when she departed for Ireland. The last one has a sad and somewhat grim description because it’s supposed to be two things: a wedding dress and a funeral dress. I’m still not done with her lore; I’m kinda stuck on how to ‘twist’ some of the important parts in the original myth. But I imagined Emer Lily as somewhat of a tomboy. Also, translating the name to Japanese was hard; I couldn’t find anything on Wikipedia Japan (unless I’m not looking hard enough), so I had to look up the actual pronunciation online, which was twice as hard because most of the sources I found didn’t include the phonetics of the name. Luckily, I managed to find one, and I had it translated using a reliable machine translator.

(Sorry if everyone has already made these points. Tumblr’s search is fucky, if I’d seen it already, I’d have reblogged it.)

I think Emer is a Valerius bastard.

I’m not going to bore us all with evidence of her being unusually good with weapons when she’s barely touched them before. I’m not even going to compare her casual comfort with threats and violence to the Valerius line’s famous ancestral rage. She’s going to be the Iron Maid, it’s foreshadowing, we get it.

I’ve got lots of weak Doylist evidence I could bring up: Hers is most frequently the POV chosen to talk about Valerius bastards. She’s got a similar personality to Marius and has even taken his romantic role.* The wounds she gets from the manticore never get followed up on-almost like they healed on their own.**

But I understand. That can all be handwaved away. So here’s the strong Watsonian.

It Is Known that Valeriuses have super senses. I thought I remembered a couple lines about Marius having magically good night vision and, separately, a line about Emer being good at seeing in the dark, but I fully admit that I haven’t been able to find anything relevant while searching for proof.

But here's what Marius has to say about the Valerius hearing when he first comes across Rae with the Cobra:

Popenjoy leaned to whisper in the woman’s ear, his hair ornaments brushing her cheek. They glanced at Marius and tittered, obviously making a nasty joke. Not that Marius cared. A Valerius had superior senses. Marius could hear what they were saying, if he chose. He did not so choose. pgs 100-101

Compare Emer dealing with whispers during the Queen's Trial:

The Last Hope pulled [the Cobra] back into his chair. The Cobra was a tall man, but against berserker strength men were toys. He said something in the Cobra’s ear. Emer’s ears were keen from years of eavesdropping. It sounded like a name. If ‘Eric’ was a name. pg 314

Personally speaking, when I’m straining to hear something, I am absolutely awful at comprehending words (or names) I am not both familiar with and expecting. Emer got this one perfectly despite not knowing the name ‘Eric’ already. ‘Keen ears from eavesdropping' my foot

But it's not just Marius, and I don't have to just compare to my own experience. We get a few side-by-side comparisons of Emer to Key’s supernatural senses as well. These two are blatant:

“I want Key,” Lady Rahela whispered. Too soft for anyone but Marius to hear. The parlour doors burst open. Lady Rahela’s maid and guard entered as if responding to the summons they could not possibly have heard. pg 110

and

Threat radiated from Key like the waves of heat from a fire. The guard and Ziyi fell silent. Having ended all conversation, Key focused, intent on the night beyond the silvered glass. “You can’t possibly see anything,” Ziyi said, puzzled. Emer put a restraining hand on the rough leather cords tying Key’s vambraces in place. No matter what trouble nobles got into, they were safer than servants. A servant could be sent to the Room of Dread and Anticipation for any transgression. He must not venture onto the balcony. Even though both Emer and Key could see one thing clearly. Something had gone terribly wrong out there. pg 224

But pretty early on, there’s even:

Emer heard a soft patter off to one side, on the roof of the spiral staircase wrapping around the tower. It must be raining hard. A storm was coming. pg 61

Doylist disclaimer that this one was certainly mostly to set up how cool Key is for knowing that assassins are coming. And absence of evidence might not be evidence of absence-maybe the weather isn’t worth mentioning just as she’s going to sleep. But Rae doesn’t mention hearing anything. So maybe she didn’t hear that “soft” patter at all.

Last but not least, we get it straight from the horse’s mouth:

Blasts of heat sent Key’s wild black hair winding as though they were underwater. The glow of distant blood-hued fires bathed his face in infernal light. “After my father died, I had nothing, and my story meant nothing. Now I have you and the Cobra, and Emer, who sees and hears the same way I do.” pg 293

In conclusion, something’s going on with our future Iron Maid aside from simply the fact that she’s hopefully going to be an axe murderer. I think she's going to be a magical axe murderer, with a family curse-slash-blessing to back it up.

One last thing.

Emer’s mind howled like the ghouls in the abyss. pg 32

I realize SRB was doing a ton of stuff with figurative language in this particular chapter. (Like, even more than she’s constantly doing stuff with figurative language.) I just think that if I’m right and Emer's descended from the thing that's been howling in the abyss for generations, then this one is extremely fun, and I should get to point it out.

*As compared to the version of narrative the Cobra's familiar with. "When the white knight's heart strays to lost queens" etc. She's the white knight now.

**Yes, I admit that if this is supposed to be a clue then it should have been followed up on. Someone should have gone ‘oh hey wait I thought you were hurt?’ and there should have been something to handwave it away. 'It's only a flesh wound' or whatever.

However. Since her first fight scene was written as her picking up a SWORD and then later in the book she remembered the scene as if she’d had an AXE in her hand...I am suggesting that maybe there was insufficient editor and/or continuity reader attention given to Emer.

And also that perhaps there should have been a dramatic moment or at the very least Rae/narrative acknowledgement of the Iron axe-murdering Maid picking up an axe for the first time, so such a mistake could not have happened in the first place.

One comedic yet hypocritical take that (I think) the devs can do with Cú’s relationship with his wife is…he gets ironically jealous to a degree/possessive when Emer interacts with other guys in Chaldea.

Oh, it gets worse when that guy happens to be a certain Archer (you know who that is). THIS ONE IS A DECLARATION OF WAR.
