We, the undersigned, come together as creatives and artists, recognising the immense power held within each voice, especially those often underrepresented in our society.

Art and creativity shapes and reflects the diverse experiences of our communities. It’s vital that politics does too, and that everyone’s voice is heard in our democracy.

But in Britain today, as many as 8 million people are not registered to vote at their current address. Turnout of younger voters has been falling considerably. New rules requiring photo ID risk excluding hundreds of thousands of citizens, and disproportionately affecting poorer people, those with disabilities and people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

We, the undersigned, stand united in our belief that participation in elections is not just a right, but a profound responsibility—one that should extend to everyone, at the heart of a vibrant democracy.

That is why we urge you to join us in registering to vote for the upcoming local elections before the deadline of 23:59 on Tuesday 16 April, at https://qrco.de/giveanx. Remember, you are also eligible to register if you are a qualifying EU or Commonwealth citizen.

We join hands with the young people leading the Give an X campaign in emphasising the importance of young people shaping the future, and we urge each and every citizen to claim their seat at the table.

Voting is not just casting a ballot; it is narrating the stories of our communities and painting a vision of a better tomorrow. In the face of huge challenges nationally and globally, that has never been more important.

Let’s all of us write the next chapter together. We Give an X – will you?

This year’s collection is more or less bookended by a pair of soundalike versions of famous popular songs. I can pretty much guarantee that you’ve never heard “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” or “Auld Lang Syne” arranged like this.

Other highlights:

Joel Paterson, an interestingly retro guitar stylist who wears his Les Paul and Chet Atkins influences on his sleeve. He’s done a couple of Beatles cover albums and a couple of Christmas albums as well. His take on “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is appropriately jaunty.

I was literally in the process of finalizing the mix for this year’s compilation when a new holiday album from Kate Rusby (Light Years, her seventh) appeared, so I had to stop everything and find a track to include. I first discovered her lovely works, always impeccably arranged, produced and performed, a few years back and have made use of her recordings, both serious and silly, a number of times in these collections.

When Eartha Kitt had a huge success with the slinky “Santa Baby” in 1953, the powers that be at her label decided, as label execs tend to do, that what she needed was a follow-up that sounded just like it. So in 1955 she recorded a version of the then-popular novelty song “Nuttin’ for Christmas”, retitled as “Nothin’ for Christmas”, with the lyrics completely re-written to sound saucy in the manner of “Santa Baby”: instead of the refrain, “Cause I ain’t been nothin’ but bad”, for example, “Cause I didn’t want to be bad” was substituted, with Eartha lyrically turning down offers of various “gifts” from would-be seducers. The song also makes use of almost the exact same arrangement as “Santa Baby”, right down to the “Boom, boom-boom, ba-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom” background chorus. I don’t know whether it sold well or not, but it’s a lot of fun.

The Soulful Strings were what Mantovani and other purveyors of easy-listening might have sounded like had they worked for Motown or Stax: heavy strings, of course, but with soul-jazz funk as the engine. This version of “Sleigh Ride” is way cool.

I often like to include one or more Beatles-related tracks in these compilations, and this year having seen the release of one more (and allegedly final) Beatles song, “Now and Then”, it seems only right to share the Weeklings’ version of “Christmas Time is Here Again”, originally from the Beatles’ 1967 fan club Christmas message of the same name. This song has been covered by a number of artists (including Ringo Starr) despite the fact that it consists of nothing more than a chorus without any verses, and the Weeklings do a great job of padding it out with musical quotes from “Flying” and “Baby, You’re a Rich Man”. This is preceded by a lovely, wistful arrangement of John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by a singer named Gabrielle Aplin.

And what holiday season is complete without a visit from the Three Wise Stooges, who can always be counted on to keep the crash in the créche.

The arrangement of “Let No Walls Divide”, recorded by Doris Day in 1961, is more than a little bombastic, not to say completely over the top, but the song’s sentiment is a nice way to close out this year’s collection…

Except, of course, for the coda: given the title of this compilation, it seemed absolutely necessary to include an excerpt from the mighty John Cleese’s unique interpretation of “The Night Before Christmas” (You can hear the whole thing at the link below).

Jody Miller’s Final Album Wayfaring Stranger Available Today On Heart of Texas Records

Heart of Texas Records is excited to announce Jody Miller’s latest release ‘Wayfaring Stranger-The Final Recordings.’ This six-song collection is the final recording project from Grammy Award Winner Jody Miller and even includes a re-recording of her biggest record. Jody Miller, a versatile singer with a rich, resonant voice who won a Grammy Award for “Queen of the House,” a homemaker’s reply to a hobo’s refrain, died on October 6, 2022, at her home in Blanchard, Oklahoma. She was 80 years old. Although lauded for her recordings in the folk, pop, patriotic and Gospel genres, her most consistent success came in the field of country music, where she notched six Top 10 Hot Country hits out of her 30 Billboard charting singles, including her Grammy-nominated cross-over version of “He’s So Fine.” It was Jody Miller’s intention to record a project primarily of songs that she had enjoyed performing throughout her illustrious career, but never had the opportunity to record. She entered the Heart of Texas Recording Studio in Brady, Texas, and recorded the old-time spirituals “Wayfaring Stranger” and “Tramp On The Street.” Miller recalled hearing both of these songs as a child growing up and cited Molly O’Day’s version of “Tramp On The Street” as one of her favorite versions of the classic. The song “I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand” became a personal favorite and testimony of Miller, especially during the last few years of her life. Written in 1974, by Colbert and Joyce Croft, the lines “I can’t even walk without You holding my hand. The mountain’s too high and the valley’s too wide. Down on my knees, I learned to stand. And I can’t even walk without You holding my hand” gave inspiration to Miller as she struggled with a debilitating disease. “For the past several years, I’ve been dealing with the effects of Parkinson’s Disease,” Miller wrote in July of 2022. “Through God’s grace and help of my family and close friends, I have been able to complete this project. Although I wish I had been stronger, I am so happy and grateful to share the messages of faith and inspiration conveyed through the words and music of most of these songs. I pray that they will be an encouragement to you.” Miller also included a new song “Blessed Are The Believers, and asked her long-time friend and fellow label mate Tony Booth to duet with her on the record. Miller and Booth were originally label mates on Capitol Records, and each spent a lot of time touring on the West Coast. Miller’s friend Bill Lorance, a confidante of fellow Oklahoma music legend Kay Starr, presented Yvonne DeVaney’s country song “My Exes” to Miller, and she immediately decided to include it on the “Wayfaring Stranger” project. Jody Miller concluded the project with a re-recording of her greatest hit, “Queen of The House,” the song that literally changed her life. Released in 1965, the song is based on Roger Miller’s monster #1 hit from early 1965, “King of the Road.” The song would garner Miller a Grammy Award and became her signature record that propelled her into Country Music, so it is very fitting that she ended her recording career by leaving her fans another version of this classic. The musicians included Michael Archer and Justin Trevino on bass, Deena Auderegg and Emily Gimble on piano, Justin Trevino on rhythm guitar, Charlie Walton on lead guitar, Jim Loessberg on pedal steel and drums, RJ Smith and Robert Weeks on fiddle and Jennifer McMullen and Jody Miller on harmony vocals. It was recorded at the Heart of Texas Recording Studio in Brady, Texas, and produced by Justin Trevino. Note

The more I think of it, the more it fits.

So you know this musical The Greatest Showman, which details the life of PT Barnum(aka the biggest scumbag who ever lived), right? Well, it’s freaky, but most of its songs(real bangers, btw) actually fit within the Season 2 arc and the characters motives really well.

Don’t worry, I will elaborate further.

(Note: This is going in on chronological order of when the songs appear in the film, so some events will be out of chronological order within the Greater Boston canon. Also, spoilers for literally everything in Season 2.)

1. The Greatest Show: The Red Line Referendum. ‘Nuff said. ‘It’s everything you ever want, it’s everything you ever need and it’s here right in front of you, this is where you wanna be.’ Fits especially well here.

2. A Million Dreams(till where the kids sing anyway): Little Charlotte with her tree of stories, constantly growing. ‘I think of what the world could be, a vision of the one of I see.’ Tell me, what could me more Charlotte than that?

3. A Million Dreams (Reprise): This is such an Ada song, come on. Besides, even in the film, Barnums kids sing this, expressing their wishes and desires. Ada may not be a very demanding kid(on the contrary, he’s a rat of sunshine on a cloudy day) and he is very optimistic.

4. Come Alive: This one has a slightly darker connotation in GB, as the start of the Lottery actually. It’s not just because it’s a big and fancy event in canon, it’s also the one where all hell breaks loose, except in the most literal sense. In any case, BAD.

5. The Other Side: Mild rant here: this song is awesome, the choreography is awesome. In comparison, the Emily Oliver interaction via mail, though just as cool, does seem a little plain. All I’m asking, all I’m asking is that they suddenly break out into song and squabble for a bit until Emily finally lets up and listens to him. Nah but seriously though, this is actually the interaction between Emily and Oliver in song form.

6. Never enough: ‘Kay this could be a bunch of people in canon actually, but the only successful assistance that’s actually offered here, that is beneficial to the main characters(in the moment anyway) is that by Melissa. She’s an incredible assistant and genuinely cares about the Linzer-Coolidges. Much like the opera singer, Jenny Lind, Melissa’s assistance helps take a massive load off of Charlottes shoulders, woo hoo.

7. This is Me(Major, major, major, major spoilers for both media here): Isabelle Powell actually addresses some very pertinent issues in her campaign, though actually present forth with little skill and foresight. When her nephew, Isaiah is arrested however, she takes her final stand. As a form of protest, she locks the passengers/ commuters out of the rail car, refusing them permission to travel. Whether the message empowers her, we aren’t exactly sure, but it certainly empowers us, teaching us how to say ‘NO’ when we’ve had enough. ‘This is Me’ not only fits here because the character is breaking out of her shell and learning to accept who she is, it’s also a form of empowerment, teaching all the circus people that they’re just as valuable, if not more so, than the supposed ‘normies’.

8. Rewrite the Stars(once again, major spoilers): This one’s a bit of romance one, in the Greatest Showman. In Greater Boston, however, it shows Leon’s desperation and inability to actually act, despite being able to see everything. In the end, much like Anne Wheeler, he realises just how much a selfish decision cost him, though is unable to remedy this problem the way he would like.

9. Tightrope: This too, actually fits multiple characters, though the ones which stand out most to me are Autumn(played by Beth Eyre, my beloved) and Tyrell. The song displays a kind of despondency on the part of Charity(Barnum’s wife) who laments how much everything has changed and how far apart they’ve grown. The Autumn one fits slightly more closely than that of Tyrell(No this isn’t my Beth Eyre Bias™️talking, this is an actual observation), in that Oliver ultimately did everything just to make his family a little more comfortable, have a greater position in society. Autumn, in her letter, however proves that she doesn’t quite care about Oliver’s social standing, just his presence in hers and Ada’s lives. It couldn’t be more perfect, actually. Similarly, (but not quite as close in situation) Tyrell admits that Dippy(refusing to use his full name, because reasons) has changed dramatically ever since he was promoted, and knows that he isn’t quite like this new person he’s become. He still has some hope that Dippy will realise this eventually, but has mostly given up by this point.

10. Never Enough(reprise): Melissa leaving the post. Need I elaborate further? Granted, this is a looser comparison than the remainder of the songs since Melissa doesn’t add really destroy any lives or careers (that weren’t already destroyed) ; she really just goes like,” Screw this, I’m out.”

11. From Now On(SPOILERS AHOY!!!!): The Mayor(the Original freaking Mayor, I mean) returns home, after reading Nica’s letter and realising just how big his mistake was. This could also be Nica realising the error of her ways and heading over the police station to confess(though this is quickly dashed by Dmitri’s appearance on TV).

12. The Greatest Show(reprise) (I cannot stress this enough, SPOILERS)): Charlotte forfeits the campaign for Mayor in a sudden twist, leaving only Emily as a viable candidate. This is also a fairly loose interpretation here, as unlike Carlisle, Emily strikes the audience as being a more harmful successor while Charlotte actually tried her best to govern the city of Red Line as fairly as she could. The comparison here, lies in that she and Barnum realise what important, and choose to focus on that, instead of chasing after a temporary dream.

That’s about it from me, folks. I’m sending this as an ask, because I don’t post very often in the Greater Boston tag, though I felt this was something worth sharing/ cursing your feed with.
