Khymera - Hold Your Ground

"Hold Your Ground" is the latest release from Dennis Ward (pictured above) and Khymera. As expected, it's another fine slice of high pedigree melodic rock.

Dennis handles lead vocals, bass, and keyboards and is joined by guitarist Michael Klein, keyboardist Eric Ragno, and drummer MIchael Kolar, with Pete Newdeck contributing backing vocals.

Khymera has in fact built its reputation as one of the best examples of what great European melodic rock is all about. It has crystal clear production, soaring vocals, killer musicianship, and songwriting that reminds fans of the heydays of the genre.

Khymera started out as an alliance between Italian producer/musician Daniele Liverani and then Kansas singer Steve Walsh. But it developed into a regular musical project when bassist and producer Dennis Ward (Magnum, Pink Cream 69) entered the fold. Known as a bassist, Dennis has always sang background vocals with his bands, so he was more than ready and willing to take over the lead vocals for Khymera when the opportunity presented itself.

Dennis took a break from Khymera in 2008 but returned in 2015 for the album "The Grand Design". Their recent album "Master Of Illusions" whcih came out in 202 followed the logical progression of the musical path that was started when Dennis joined the project. It was a strong, extremely melodic release, showcasing the fantastic vocal abilities of Dennis and skills as a songwriter and producer.

Mercifully, the wait between albums has been a bit shorter this time. "Hold Your Ground" is an absolute tour de force of fantastic melodic rock.

Ez az átkozott járvány a zeneipart is jócskán megfektette. Április nem is szokott uborkaszezon lenni, most mégis alig-alig jelenik meg valami, ami pedig korábban erre a hónapra lett beígérve, többnyire késedelmet szenved a kialakult sajnálatos helyzet miatt. Ezekben az ínséges időkben lehet és kell leginkább “kukázni”. Most egy olyan albumot bányásztam, ami ugyan az angol AOR világából érkezett, de maga inkább a progresszív rock/metál műfajba illeszkedik.

Történt ugyanis, hogy a brit melodikus rock második vagy harmadik vonalába tartozó Newman (idén márciusban jelent meg “Ignite” című lemezük az AOR Heaven kiadónál) névadója, Steve Newman elhatározta, hogy tesz egy kisebbfajta kirándulást a progresszív muzsikák irányába, és olyan zenekarok nyomdokaiba lép, mint a Rush, Saga, Marillion, Shadow Gallery. Most kivételesen nem ő énekelte föl a lemezt, az új stílushoz új hangot keresett, így lelt rá végül egy Ben Green nevű fiatal csákóra, akiről persze még életemben nem hallottam. Nincs rossz hangja a srácnak, jól is passzol ehhez a kifejezetten dallamos, de az átlagos AOR-nál jóval változatosabb muzsikához.

Szerintem nagyon hallatszik a végeredményen, hogy ez egy brit falka műve, van benne jócskán a szigetország neo-prog hagyományaiból, bár egyértelműen nem illeszthető bele ebbe a műfaji kategóriába. Egyrészt néha fémesebb (értsd: metálosabb) a hangzás, másrészt van ebben egy nagy adag amerikanizmus is, de főleg a kanadai fajtából. Engem leginkább Eric Ragno és Dan Reed egy nagyon régi és hasonló tőről fakadt projektjére, a Vox Tempusra emlékeztet (In the Eye Of Time, 2004). Csak az a gondom, hogy bár kétségkívül dallamos a dolog, nem elég dallamos, és bár tagadhatatlanul progos a fölfogás, nem elég progos a kivitelezés. Az az érzésem, hogy szegény Newman egyik széket sem akarta megülni igazán, így azután tomporával a földre esett. Azért akadnak itt elismerésre méltó pillanatok. Ahhoz elég jó, hogy az uborka ízét elvegye az ember szájából…

Da quando è arrivato online il primo trailer ufficiale del film, tutti non fanno altro che parlare di Morbius, il nuovo cinecomic Sony nei confronti del quale i fan nutrono una serie di aspettative decisamente elevate. Le prime immagini ufficiali del film con Jared Leto hanno anticipato quello che sembrerebbe essere un film dark e molto avvincente.

Il personaggio è noto per essere uno dei più grandi nemici di Spider-Man e possiede tutta una serie di caratteristiche (inclusa la sua storia personale) che lo rendono assolutamente perfetto per uno standalone. Grazie al primo trailer (e alla presenza del personaggio di Avvoltoio/Michael Keaton), sappiamo che il film sarà collegato al MCU.

Di seguito elenchiamo 5 camei del MCU che vorremmo vedere in Morbius:

Spider-Man

Le probabilità che Spider-Man appaia in Morbius sono abbastanza alte, soprattutto dopo che il personaggio di Avvoltoio è stato avvistato nel primo trailer: inoltre, Peter Parker ha una profonda connessione con i personaggi coinvolti nella storia.

Sony e Marvel hanno un accordo in merito allo sfruttamento del personaggio, quindi ci sono buone probabilità che qualcosa sia già stato orchestrato per permettere a Tom Holland di apparire in alcuni dei film realizzati dalla Sony e dedicati agli storici nemici dell’Uomo Ragno. Con Michael Morbius tra i più noti nemici del simpatico arrampicamuri, il minimo che i fan si aspettano è che il personaggio di Peter venga almeno citato nel film con Jared Leto.

Bruce Banner

Uno dei grandi temi che riguardano il viaggio di Michael Morbius è il fatto che stia cercando disperatamente di trovare una cura per la sua malattia. Se quella parte della storia – almeno dal trailer – sembra essere raccontata in maniera molto dettagliato, avrebbe allora senso nel film il cameo di un personaggio del MCU dotato di grande intelligenza e di enorme conoscenza scientifica.

Il primo supereroe che ci viene in mente è naturalmente Bruce Banner, un personaggio che ha molta esperienza nella ricerca di cure per salvarsi da potere sconosciuti. Vederlo interagire con Morbius sarebbe un ottimo modo per includere nel film un personaggio del MCU. 

Scarlet Witch

Parlando di personaggi interessanti del MCU che sarebbero bello vedere in Morbius, Scarlet Witch è sicuramente uno di questi. Stiamo parlando di uno dei personaggi più forti e potenti dell’Universo Cinematografico Marvel: proprio per questo, c’è bisogno di coinvolgere maggiormente Wanda Maximoff sul grande schermo.

Molto presto Scarlet Witch avra una serie a lei interamente dedicata che debutterà su Disney+, l’annunciata WandaVision, e un cameo del personaggio in Morbius potrebbe essere una mossa decisamente intelligente da parte della Marvel per suscitare ancora più interesse nei confronti della show. Dalle prime immagini del film, sembra che Morbius avrà dei toni particolarmente dark che potrebbero facilmente adattarsi alla personalità di Scarlet.

J. Jonah Jameson

J. Jonah Jameson non è un personaggio folle, dotato di superpoteri incontrollabili: eppure, sembra difficile riuscire a trovare qualcuno che odi Spider-Man più di lui.

Abbiamo visto Jameson fare il suo ritorno nella scena post-credit di Spider-Man: Far From Home, quindi sappiamo che il personaggio tornerà sul grande schermo. E se fosse proprio lui a manipolare Morbius e Avvoltoio, preparando così il terreno per il terzo film dedicato all’Uomo Ragno?

Blade

Sappiamo che Blade farà il suo debutto nel MCU grazie al film con protagonista il premio Oscar Mahershala Ali, ma cosa accadrebbe se la Marvel decidesse di introdurre il personaggio in Morbius? Il film con Jared Leto collegherà per la prima volta l’Universo Cinematografico Marvel al mondo dei vampiri, un’ambientazione a cui appartiene anche il personaggio di Blade.

Morbius potrebbe dunque essere il film perfetto attraverso il quale introdurre Eric Brooks, offrendo quindi alla Marvel la possibilità di accennare le origini del personaggio, senza così scendere in ulteriori dettagli con l’annunciato standalone che vedrà protagonista Ali. E se i film venissero collegati, il Vampiro Vivente potrebbe addirittura comparire nel film dedicato a Blade…

Album Review: Khymera - Master Of Illusions

While known as a bassist, Dennis always sang background vocals with his bands, so he was more than ready and willing to take over the lead vocals on the Khymera albums “A New Promise,” “The Greatest Wonder,” and “The Grand Design”. While Khymera has been on hiatus for some time, Dennis is ready to come back with a new album, “Master of Illusions”, which comes about four years after the release of the last album, “The Greatest Wonder”.

Musically, the new album very much follows the logical progression of the musical path that was started when Dennis joined the project. “Master of Illusions” is a strong, extremely melodic release, which showcases the fantastic vocal abilities of Dennis and highlights his great skills as a songwriter and producer.

Khymera still offers one of the most shining examples of what great European melodic rock is all about: crystal clear production, soaring vocals, killer musicianship and songwriting that reminds fans of the heydays of the genre when bands like Giuffria, Icon, and Signal roamed the Earth.

Khymera - The Grand Design

Das erste Mal als ich von Khymera hörte war irgendwann im Jahre 2003, wenn ich mich recht erinnere. Damals sang noch Steve Walsh von Kansas, und bis auf das Schlagzeug spielte alles ein gewisser Daniele Liverani ein. Das Projekt entwickelte so seine Regelmässigkeiten und schon bei der zweiten Khymera Platte übernahm Dennis Ward den Lead Gesang. Dennis Ward hatte ich schon immer auf dem Radar, war ich ein Liebhaber der ersten Pink Cream ’69 Platte, die ich auch heute noch kultig finde, entwickelte sich Dennis immer mehr zu einem meiner Lieblingsbassspieler der Szene. Das er Bass spielen kann, wusste ich also, und hab mich auch in unzähligen Liveshows davon überzeugen können. Für mich war es vor knapp 20 Jahren dann auch ein Riesending, als ich in einer meiner Bands selbst einen von Dennis Ward geschrieben Song coverte. Aber genug Vorgeplänker, bei Khymera zeigte Dennis Ward auch auf einmal, dass er nicht nur als Bassist, Songschreiber, Produzent und Mann hinter dem Mischpult jeweils einen Hammerjob abliefert, nein auf einmal singt er auch noch, und wie. Der 1967 in Texas geborene Musiker verfügt auch noch über eine der besten Stimmen wie ich finde des Genres, das kam irgendwie bei allen Background Sachen die er gesungen hat, nie so richtig zur Geltung. The Grand Design ist nun das erste Khymera Album bei welchem Daniele Liverani nicht mehr mitwirkt. Bass und Gesang hat wie schon erwähnt Dennis Ward auf Band gebannt. Das Schlagzeug übernahm Edguy Schlagzeuger Felix Bohnke, die Gitarrenarbeit übernahm Ex-Wicked Sensation’s Michael Klein, die Keyboards Eric Ragno, der eigentlich schon bei allen gespielt hat, die irgendwie was mit melodischem Hard Rock zu tun haben und Jim Rybkost. Für die Hammerproduktion zeichnet sich natürlich auch Dennis Ward verantwortlich. Sieben Jahre verging es nun bis The Grand Design als neues Album erschien, sieben Jahre Wartezeit die sich echt gelohnt haben, Melodic Rock vom Allerfeinsten mit grosser Ohrwurmgarantie. Es gibt von den zwölf dargebotenen Songs nicht eine schwache Nummer, es gibt softe Nummern wie Where is the Love, Keyboard dominante Songs wie Finally der aber auch ein hartes Riffing besitzt. Es hat Nummern die mich an die 80er Jahren erinnern, wie der Opener Never Give Up On You. The Grand Design ist eine Platte geworden, die werde ich auch in ein paar Jahren noch auflegen und mir reinziehen, eignet sich zum Autofahren, zum Geniessen mit dem Kopfhörer oder einfach so zum Mitstampfen. Und wenn das Projekt jetzt auch noch Live einen Platz findet im dicht gedrängten Programm von Dennis Ward, das wär der Oberhammer.

Egyértelműen hallatszik a dalokban, hogy Eddie Van Halen és Randy Rhoads hatalmas hatással volt a játékomra, sokkal inkább, mint a debütáló lemezen.

De van bennük némi Deep Purple hangulat is, annak ellenére, hogy kevesebb a billentyűs hangszer. Más nótákban meg ott vannak a Rainbow és Dio hatások… és így tovább. Ezek a hatások teljesen természetesek, cseppet sem kiterveltek. Csak hagytuk, hogy sodorjon minket magával az ár, számunkra ez a rock’n’roll lényege.”
