Balance Your Home’s Humidity for Maximum Cool
Tumblr media
Want to know the secret to staying comfortable all summer long without racking up high electricity bills? Manage both your home’s temperature and humidity levels. Of course, lowering the thermostat helps, but for the greatest impact, you need the right level of humidity. It’s like how a drier day feels so much better than a muggy, sticky one.
Let’s dive into humidity and how you can maximize your home’s comfort with simple, portable air comfort solutions to reduce costs in the long run.
First things first: What’s humidity?
Humidity is the measurement of water vapor in the air. The higher the humidity, the heavier and more oppressive it’ll feel. Relative humidity is measured as a percentage.
The right humidity levels help your home feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
How do I check my humidity levels?

Hello! I hope you’ve been doing okay! I saw that you had requests open and I also saw that you take requests for Carmen? If it’s totally okay of course to request for him! I got into the bear a few days ago and my brain has been filled with nothing but thoughts of Carmy. Would it be okay just requesting something that’s just Carmen being worried/concerned about the reader? He just always sees whenever there’s that tiredness to them when it looks like it’s a bad day, that slump in their shoulders that all too much reminds him of him a little sometimes, just bringing them into the office and his eyebrows are furrowed with that look of concern and his eyes the same, maybe unexpectedly just wrapping them in a hug (Your writing is so cute btw!) 💕
to carry and to bear

ask, it will be my infinite quest to fulfill! love this request so much and i loved writing is even more. i'm going to be so annoying when s2 comes out, especially since i love carmen's character so much! thank you for your request anon <3

Wrapping yourself tight against the chilly wind of the unforgivable Chicago weather, you watch the city coming alive in the early morning as you walk down the concrete sidewalk of the Beef’s city corner.
Merchants and gazebo have begun to set up shop, their bright red vendor stands a stark contrast to the grey haze of the windy city. Corner stores and cafes have begun to uncover their blinds, dusting away the sliver of droplets that had long since evaporated after a heavy downpour the night before.
it’s slow though.
The mass of cars and yellow cabbed taxis haven’t yet filled the gravel roads, and the surging rush of traffic and uncontrollable road rage the beef windows have been accustomed to viewing hasn't filled the air.
The pinch of cold begins to itch against the cracks in your outerwear. Your trusted winter jacket and gloves had been left at the bottom of your laundry basket and instead you were forced to throw on a flimsy polyester jacket that provided absolutely no warmth.
Your fingers are stuffed into your pocket, trying to hide them from the cold but it is no use. They shake against the freezing air of wind as you push past huddles of men chain smoking and passing coolers of steaming coffee on street corners.
You’re about to go ask for a cup, despite Carmen's disgruntled comments of their huddled group festering near the restaurant. They were a pack of wolves, and whilst Sydney's sandwiches had fended them off for a while, the hole in the Beef’s window was still fresh. Like a cycle, more and more had begun to trickle in from alleyways, leading to customers steering clear from the nearby streets.
Carmen didn’t even like you walking to work this early, you get it, despite being daylight, Chicago had a way of defying social norms. You had paid some attention to the increase in robbing and attacks that had begun to frequent news reports.
It wouldn't have been a problem, walking was always voluntary for you as you had a perfectly fine working car that would drive you to and from your destination with as little as a rumble from its engine. And yet, that seemingly perfect car decided to break down on you this morning, leading to an overheated engine and a smoke filled hood.
So not only did you have to pay for a towing truck to drag away your car to an auto shop you couldn't afford to afford, but you were late. And you hated being late.
Not to mention your sister had called you late last night, asking to stay for a couple nights after her good for nothing boy-friend you would rather call a child had kicked her out after a fight.
She had rambled for nothing short of 2 hours after you had gotten home from the Beef late last night, and the pull of sleep had begun to weigh on you. The exhaustion and deprivation had written itself in the slug of your limbs and the slump of your shoulders.
You had to come in today, there were no rest days even if the Beef wasn't neck deep in debt and Cicero didn't have you all on a leash. Especially if you wouldn't allow yourself one. You had that in common with Carmen, you frequently ignored your own needs for your craft, the same insatiable passion and need for perfection driving you to exhaustion.
The familiar chime of the Beefs wooden doors hit your ears, and you shake off the cold of the city streets, the Beef is warm and you're grateful, sighing as the heat of prepped ovens and oiled pans defrosts your face.
It takes a second before you walk into the busy kitchen when the sound finally reaches you. The screeching sound of Richie's voice bickers with Tina about the next door convenient store being turned into a “pretentious hipster coffee shop that is legally selling dog water to unassuming Chicagoans”.
Dragging on and on about the invasion of gentrification that will soon take out all the good businesses that had been around since his grandfather had come from Sicily. Richie was not from Siciliy. In which Carmen mirrors your thoughts and yells that he is not Italian, and his obsession with the European country has been bordering on creepy.
Ebra is reciting an article about a culinary student that had gone rogue and murdered their entire class, giving pointers on how he himself had to patch up an entire unit of people stabbed by a bent corkscrew. The loud conversations and untethered yelling across the kitchen combines with the malfunctioning arcade that has begun to re-circuit the same sentence for 20 minutes now, digs a deep burrow into your temple.
You stand at the entrance of the kitchen, watching the commotion of early morning prep with a tight grimace, your head begins to vibrate a little, the start of a headache you won’t be relieved from spreading and you have to swallow down the exhaustion that begins to seep in at the sight.
Sydney brushes past you, greeting you with a hello and one of her charming smiles before muttering about throwing that arcade machine out the back. You giggle and it hurts, but you do it anyway because, fuck, you would help her.
You step into the kitchen, and the crew each turn to greet you good morning as you walk past them into the locker bay stuffing your bag and shoes into the cabinet before quickly changing.
Your phone reads 7am and you stuff it into the pocket of your hung jacket before slamming the locker shut. Carmen peeks his head around the corner, nodding at you as you put on your non-slip shoes, calling your name when you don't notice, you flinch before peering up and Carmen waves trying to get your attention.
“Mornin’ chef, didn’t think you were coming in” Carmen remarks, raising his eyebrows as he leans his shoulder against the wall.
“Morning, yeah, sorry about that, uh- shit happened and I had to deal with it all at once. Won;t happen again” You reply, biting back a yawn, before letting your feet fall to the ground.
“It’s all good,” Carmen replies, nodding, wiping his hand on the white towel hanging on his shoulder that was already smudged with stains.
“Just shoot me a text or call next time, yeah?” Carmen replies
“Will do chef” You reply, smiling, before peering out to see Sydney carrying a basket of  ingredients
“New recipe?” You ask, nodding towards Sydney, and Carmen nods, running a hand through his curls as he leans forward.
“Well call it trying something. Not yet finished, just needs some minor tweaks here and there” Carmen replies
“I can help Sydney out if you want?” You reply without a second thought.
You already had prep and a marinade you had to make for Cicero’s function he had conveniently told Carmen about the night before, but helping out was second nature to you, it was a part of this family's culture.
Carmen shakes his head, his eyes falling to your slumped shoulder, and the slow but tight blinks you tended to do when you were exhausted.
The second he had peered his head around the corner and saw the slug of your limbs he knew something was up, but he also knew he couldn't force you to relax, you were worse than him, always taking on so much, filling up your cup until it was overflowing.
“No, no, it’s alright, besides, that marinade isn’t going to be easy, I should be asking if you want me to help out” Carmen replies, chuckling, scratching his neck as you curve your mouth into that smile he loves so much. You could be half-dead and he still stares at you like you were the most gorgeous thing he's ever seen.
“I think I’ve got it handled. I remember having to make something similar back at Le Bleu, you just got to get the temperature right or the entire thing gets spoiled. Having more than one person just makes it more confusing. besides, don't you have that meeting with the vendor today?” You reply, and Carmen sighs, nodding
“Yep, hopefully this place looks stable enough to get him to sign, you know I can’t deal with corporate bullshit. Sydney should’ve met up with them, fuck any one other than me” Carmen replies, shaking his head as he fidgets with the hem of his apron.
Despite his numerous accolades, and world renowned talent, he only ever felt at nature in the kitchen. High function parties and elusive dinner bars were things he despised, feeling out of place despite it being thrown in his name.
“Hey, don’t be so hard on yourself, you're the face of this place Carmen, you’ve transformed it, you oughta show them the Beef is the best investment they’ll make. Hell you’re the best investment they can make” You reply, and Carmen ears perk at your reply, smiling fondly at your comment. He didn't deserve your praise, and he hated the way the sound of your lips curving around his name shoots through him.
“Are y'all going to get to work or continue eye fucking?” Richie calls, as he passes by the locker bay, and Carmen immediately shakes his head muttering a fuck you before nodding to you, and heading back to his station. You get up from your seated position on the bench, dusting and ironing out the creases in your apron before mentally going over the things you had to complete before opening.
Prep vegetables, then start the veal stock for Cicero's marinade. You had to complete it early, since it had to be chilled for at least 5 hours, any less and the fat would congeal and turn into a complete mess you didn’t have time to fix.
You walk towards your station, stepping over sauce that had spilled onto the tile floors, this crew was amazing in their craft, but god were they messy. You bump shoulders with Sydney as you begin to grate and cut root vegetables and herbs, you have to force your eyes open, blinking several times before dipping your hand into an ice water bucket and wiping your face with it.
Sydney converses with you, and it wasn't that she was boring, in fact you both frequently spend time even out of the restaurant as friends. But you can’t even try to decipher what she says, just sounds coming out of her mouth that you pack away in order to get your job done.
Just cut the vegetables, finish the stock, cut the vegetables, finish the stock, you repeat it like a mantra in your head, unaware at Sydney calling your name. She reaches forward, pressing a soft hand to your shoulder to get your attention.
“Hey, did you hear me?” Sydney replies, concern written across her features as she peers at your disoriented state.
“Huh? Sorry, what did you say?” You reply, avoiding her gaze. You feel her penetrate through you, pitying the exhaustion on your face, probably realising you were a shit chef who couldn't even handle a couple responsibilities.
“I was asking if you could grab me some of the sauce I made yesterday from the storage fridge. You alright? You seem a bit..” Sydney starts, before you cut her off quickly
“Just had a long night, didn't get much sleep” You reply, rubbing your eyes with a hand. What has gotten into you? You weren't foreign to a few sleepless nights and a few too many deadlines you had to meet, hell your entire college and culinary life had been exactly that.
“That’ll kill you, you know” Richie butts in, reaching for a crab cake Sydney had prepared before being swatted away with a wooden spoon.
“What?” You ask, already regretting asking Richie to elaborate on what was clearly some elaborated story he had got stored away
“Go without that good old shut eye a few nights too long and you'll start hallucinating shit, not fucking with you you, don’t you know about the Russian sleep experiment-?” Richie rambles
“Ah here we go” Sydney replies, rolling her eyes
“You think because you went to Paris or whatever prestigious tight ass school you know everything? It’s real, happened right after World War 2, Russians got a bunch of people and just made them not sleep for like months, they starting turning into fuckin' aliens and shit-” Richie continues, ignoring Sydney's sly remarks about Richie's facebook usage.
“Richie c’mon, you know that shits made up” You reply
“Don’t matter, didn’t I tell you about my week long bender during college? Starting seeing my great aunt from the corner of my eye, and I swear she is still there-” Richie replies before getting cut off my Carmen calling his name
“Stop distracting my chefs Cousin”
You chuckle, shaking your head as Richie mutters about the fall of democracy and wipe your hands across your towel.
“I’ll go get your sauce Syd” You reply, and she smiles in gratitude as you turn towards the storage room. The cold air of the fridge wakes you up a little, and you rest your head against the door of the storage fridge, sighing in frustration. Talking to Richie was exhausting in itself, and when you were already running only fumes and second hand smoke you felt like it took the last bit of energy you had left.
You grab the container of sauce written with “DO NOT TOUCH” on its front, it's wrapped in cling film, with no lid and you're careful not to drop it everywhere. It wasn’t heavy, per se, just filled to the brim and without careful steps it was close to tipping out. You walk out of the storage room carefully, before turning towards your station.
“Corner!” You yell, twisting around the corner of the kitchen, before you slam straight into a tall body, jerking back and inadvertently spilling the sauce all across the kitchen floor and onto your shoes. You feel it sink into your socks and drip down your apron, eye twitching in frustration as Marcus starts apologising profusely, you ignore him, dropping down to your knees and reaching for paper towels. You start wiping away the sauce, as Marcus drops down to your level and tries to help, you shake our head looking up at him.
“Stop, Marcus, just stop. I can do it” You reply
“But-” Marcus protests
“We don't need two chefs to clean up a one person job, alright? You need to finish prep” You reply, letting the towels soak up the sauce. You grieve for Sydney, not all of it had spilt, but a quarter of a container wasn’t enough to get through the morning rush, let alone the entire day.
You ignore the spilt sauce all over your clothes, you didn’t have time to change now, rushing back to your station before telling Sydney about the spill
“You serious? I thought I could leave early today, got a friend's birthday” Sydney replies, pinching the bridge of her nose.
You instantly feel guilty, you should've been more careful, and now Sydney would have to pay for it.
“Hey, I got it, let me take that new recipe off your plate. That gives you enough time to get to the party?” You reply
Sydney looks up, rising her eyebrows “No, no I couldn’t possibly ask you to”
“Nonsense, I owe you anyway, remember when I had to leave halfway through the morning to get my sister?” You reply, with a tired smile before Sydney wraps her arms around you, you rub a hand across her back. You can’t really feel her arms around you, it’s like all your senses are delayed, you ignore it as you get back to work, now with another task on your plate.
You finish chopping the vegetables after a short while, usually you were the fastest in the house, but today you lagged behind, finally carrying the vegetables to Carmen who looked at you strange, his eyes staring through you, he swallowed like he was going to say something as you walked away, before stopping and continuing stirring the stock on the stove
By the time the Beef opens, you're still elbow deep in work, you've stayed silent most of the time, waving off Marcus’s apology and instead working, not stopping since you started. You skipped breakfast, and you hadn't gotten a chance to eat, and just when you're about to make yourself something, Richie calls your name from the front counter.
You walk towards the front of the Beef, wiping stains on your apron to look a little presentable to the outside world. Richie stands at the register, flicking a pen in his hand, a look of annoyance on his face.
“What's up?” You ask Richie, as a tall man dressed down in a polo sweater and khakis stares down at you in anger. He’s familiar, someone you had served when Richie had to take his smoke break, and he scrutinises you as you smile at him.
That’s the only way you could communicate with these people, any hint of anger and you’d be written of as angry and unable to control your emotions, you lost your last job because you defended yourself anyway.
“This guy said he came in and you made him something he apparently didn't like, but finished anyway” Richie replies, a knowing look passes between you both and you sigh, you don't have time for this.
“Morning Sir, May I ask what’s the problem” You ask politely
“You suggested to me a dish from the menu, alright, YOU, not me, so don't go blaming me for this, and look what I got, not only does it have nuts, which i hate, it's spicy. Way too spicy, I want a refund, NOW” The man replies, seething, his yelling catches the attention of other patrons, and Richie begins to reach under the table for a bat.
“Well, you finished it all so I don’t know what you-” You begin before the man cuts you off loudly
“Do you think I give a shift what you think? Huh? Jesus fucking Christ, see you just need to do what I fucking say, not argue. Give me a refund before I get you fired from this shit hole you dumb stupid-” The man yells, loudly before Carmen's booming voice cuts him off
“I wouldn't finish that sentence if I were you” Carmen replies, clenching his jaw in way that told you he was trying to hold back the rage from spilling out
“Who the fuck are you?” The man asks
“I own this shit hole you piece of shit, and if you don't get the fuck out of my restaurant I'm going to break every single bone in your face with my bare hands".
“Excuse me?”
Carmen laughs, shaking his head before smiling at the man
“I told you”
Carmen drags the man by his collar, throwing him onto the sidewalk and dragging his body to the alleyway, you fear what he is going to do and Richie raises his eyebrows in astonishment.
“Well shit cousin, you ain't a pussy after all” Richie mutters under his breath
You can faintly hear the sound of splitting skin and the crack of bone, before Carmen storms back into the restaurant, eyeing all the patrons who are following his every move.
“Y'all got that? Anyone mess with my people hear and your walk out on a fucking stretcher” Carmen replies still seething with anger, before Richie claps loudly as Carmen walks back behind the desk.
“Call a fucking ambulance” Carmen replies, rolling his eyes at Richie before he walks towards you, the the tension immediately leaving him as he find your safe and away from that man.
“You alright? He didn't hurt you or anything?” Carmen asks in concern, his eyes darting across your body to see any imagined injuries
“It seems you should be asking him that question” You reply, nudging towards the alley of the Bear, chuckling as you shake your head.
“You didn't have to do that you know, iIcould have-” You start
Carmen looks down at you in concern, shaking his head as he places his hand on you shoulder
“Could've what? He was screaming in your face and I wasn't about to let him think that shit was okay, god, how could you not react?” Carmen replies, looking down at you in concern, shaking his head as he places a hand on your shoulder.
“I’m just so busy, I still- Fuck, i still got to get Cicero's marinade in the fridge, and i need to start on Syd’s broth” You mutter pressing your fingertips to your temples.
“What? You’re doing Sydney’s load as well? Hey, you need to sit down a second” Carmen replies, as you begin to walk back towards the kitchen, with Carmen hot on your heels, asking you to stop and turn to him.
You hear him call your name, but the mountain of tasks that were now even later due to that customer had begun to seize your consciousness.
All you could focus on was the dishes you needed to make and the pain in your temples that had begun to spread down, your vision getting fuzzy around the edges as you try and shake yourself awake.
“Dammit, listen to me! Stop cutting fucking vegetables and listen to me” Carmen yells at you for the first time, twisting your body to face him and you spit out in anger
“What?!”
“What’s gotten into you today?” Carmen replies, yelling
And you don't know why, but that question breaks something in you, and you can't help but let out a short chuckle. Carmen looks down at you in horror, trying to reach for you, to catch you when the inevitable happens and you look at him once before it does.
Before your vision begins to blur and the edges begin to burn like a flame, you try and catch yourself, but it’s too late and you fall into Carmen's arms, wrapped up against his chest as you crash.
Carmen gathers you in his arms, his heart breaking beneath his breasts, holding his sweet girl in his arms as the streams of tears dampen his shirt. The rest of the crew watch on in concern, and Carmen shoes them away as he carries your unconscious body to the office.
“What the fuck Cousin?” Richie calls
“Hey, hey, is she alright? What -what happened?” Sydney replies in horror as she watches Carmen carry you from the kitchen.
“What happened was, ya'll did fuck all when she was practically breaking down trying to finish everyone else's fucking mess. What happened? Are you fucking serious? If i wasn't there, she would’ve fainted into a burning skillet of your fucking vegetables Sydney” Carmen replies, shaking his head, the entire crew goes silent, the only sounds coming from the beeps of ovens and stove tops, and the sizzling of burning food.
Carmen goes quiet, as he assesses your state, there is something unwritten in the way he holds you, and he blinks tight, his face twitching a little as if he had to make sure you were in his arms, the only place he wanted you to be.
“Get back to work” Carmen replies, quietly, a stark contrast to his rage from before, the crew has never seen him like this, his eyes and focus on you, as if he has been seized by this responsibility and dying need to protect you. He can hardly breathe, his arms shaking as he stares down at your sullen and tired face.
“We need-” Marcus starts before Carmen shakes his head
“No, no, enough. Sydney will hold down the fort, this is my responsibility. Get. back to work.” Carmen replies
—-
Carmen wastes no time to gently place your body onto the scuffed office couch, pressing a hand to your head, before reaching for an ice cold container of water, dipping a towel into it before gently pressing it to your forehead.
Carmen shakes his head in anger, he should've seen this coming, he should've noticed from the slump of your shoulder and your one word answers that you were stretching yourself too thin.
Carmen tortures himself as he replays the moments before you fainted into his arms. The way your features twisted into a sob, and the lasts shred of resolve snapped, and you had reached for him, you had reached for him.
You had reached for Carmen when you fell, and something in him broke when he had caught you.
Carmen had been used to his own self-destruction, but as he rested his thumb, rubbing circles and wiping away the tears on your face, he wished himself to change, not just for him, but for you. How could he? How could you be such a poor example to you? This was his own fault, and the reality of that conclusion twists like a knife to his gut.
His sweet girl, his Sunshine, who had thought the needs of this goddamn sandwich shop was more important than her own. You begin to stir in his arms, and the tension and shake of his arms begins to release as you wake up, Carmen eases you into consciousness when you begin to panic.
“Hey hey, I’m right here, you're okay, you're okay” Carmen replies softly, and you squeeze your eyes tightly, trying to understand what had happened and why you felt like your body was filled with lead.
"What, what happened” You reply, looking across the location of the office.
“You fainted, and I carried you to the office because you are not going back into that kitchen” Carmen replies, sitting up from his slumped position.
You stay quiet,  confusion lacing your features as you shake your head. You fainted? How did that even happen? You had never fainted in your entire life.
Carmen peers at you, his eyes dancing across your face as your silence frightens him, he wouldn't even recognise you, your usual bubbly, and incredibly chirpy self was not replaced by someone who was so exhausted they couldn’t stay conscious.
“You gotta talk to me baby girl, please, look at me, you can tell me, you can tell me anything” Carmen replies, softly, caressing your hand with his thumb when it begins to shake.
You look up at him, his expression of worry and concern causing your features to twist,
“I um, I’m just a little tired” You reply, the beginning of tears choking you, causing your words to rush out as  you try to stop yourself but it is fruitless, and Carmen eyebrows kind of pinch, he kind of frowns a little as he looks at you in that way.
It's all it takes before you sob, and sink into the coach. Carmen gathers you once again in his arms, and scoops your legs so that they lay across his thighs, and your head rests against his collarbone.
“I know baby, I know, I’m sorry, Oh honey I am so sorry” Carmen replies, rubbing your back as you let the last of your resolve sink into his chest, the cry of your tears leaving you speechless.
You can’t stop crying, the cup spilling over and making a big whole mess, snot and tears and heartache and exhaustion dirties Carmen's chef whites and you can't help but grip onto him like he is the only thing tethering you to Earth.
You don’t have to tell Carmen then, he knew the second you walked in, and he knows now when you hold him. There's a certain grief Carmen feels when he looks at you and sees himself, and in a way this is for Carmen too.
You sit like this for a while, you and Carmen. Wrapped in his arms as you lay across his lap, long after the tears had run dry, where you are left with hiccups and the soothing touch of Carmen's hand across your back.
It feels like you two are the only people on earth. Everything is Carmen; its all you smell, all you feel against your skin, all you hear as he whispers into you ear. No one dares to step into the office doors, even when an hour ticks by, even when the trickle of customers turns into a downpour and the orders never end, the family knows that you need this, that your health was better than money, or happy customers and fuck all.
Even after you have cried your eyes out, the responsibility of work begins to weigh on your body, you still had so much to do with so little time
“But the marinade, and- and Sydney's” You begin before Carmen cuts you off with a soft squeeze.
“Richie’ll handle it, and if he doesn't Cicero can go fuck himself. You really think I’m going to let that override you right now? Just forget about the kitchen alright, can you do that for me, pretty girl?” Carmen replies
You nod, the burden that had exhausted you to sickness lifted from your shoulders. You look towards the clock and realise the vendors were coming soon to meet with Carmen, something he couldn’t miss.
“The vendors, aren't they-”
“They came in 3 hours early, it's why it took me so long to get to you when that asshole was throwing a fit” Carmen replies, knowing what you were asking for.
You peek at him in question “Well?”
“They signed.” Carmen replies, rolling eyes and smiling at your delighted squeal
“What did I tell you? Carmen Berzatto is more than-” You start before a yawn stretches through you.
“Alright, alright, enough talking from you. When’s the last time you ate?” Carmen asks
You stop and scratch your head, trying to think and you laugh a little when you can’t remember.
“I don't know” You reply
Carmen’s eye twitches, and he smiles down at you before easing you off his thighs and onto the coach.
“What- what are you doing?” You ask, not even trying to hide the sadness in your voice. You already miss the heat of his chest warm against your cheek.
Carmen smiles softly as he looks down at you, threaded a hand through his head as he wipes down the creases on his apron.
“I’m making you something”
“What? No it’s- it’s okay I’ll eat at family” You reply, reaching a hand out to him
Carmen reaches for your palm, pressing a soft kiss on your the skin of your knuckles before reaching down to kiss the top of your head.
“No you need to eat now, alright? You're going to sleep the rest of the day, and then, and then, you're coming back to my place so I can keep an eye on you. You gonna listen to me or protest?” Carmen replies, eyebrow raised as he crosses his arms. His voice drops down an octane, like it was a command, and you have to bite back the desire floating in your stomach at the way he looks down with his eyes all heavy from above.
“Okay, alright, whatever you say Chef” You reply with a smile, and Carmen sinks his teeth into his bottom lip when you say it like that.
“Just wait a sec” Carmen replies, and as he is about to leave you call for him again
“What are you even making, half the ingredients are gone”
“It’s no problem, it’s your recipe anyway” Carmen replies, with a hint of a smile on his face before he leaves the room. It takes you a while, half because you're exhausted and the other half because you're hungry before the realisation hits you that he's made a recipe for you, about you.
You can't help the smile that stretches across your face, goddamnit Carmen Berzatto, and you say you aren't a romantic.

Help! I think my timelord has a fever? I can't tell 100% but they don't look good. Do I need a special thermometer to check? (Where do I buy/find one?) What do I do??
Gallifreyan Pyrexia
Disclaimer: This guide is not suitable for humans. Always consult your human medical people.
🌡️ Checking Temperature
First things first, you don’t need a special thermometer to check your Time Lord’s temperature—a human one will do just fine. Here are some key points to remember:
Every Gallifreyan will have their own normal temperature baseline, somewhere between 15-19°C (59-66.2°F).
This shouldn't deviate by more than 2-3 degrees.
If their temperature rises above 19°C (66.2°F), they could be suffering from hyperthermia.
📋 Recognising Hyperthermia
Hyperthermia occurs when their body temperature exceeds 19°C (66.2°F), potentially leading to heatstroke and other serious complications. Signs and symptoms include:
Flushed Skin: The skin may appear red and feel hot to the touch.
Sweating: While not as common as in humans, excessive sweating may occur.
Weakness: A general feeling of fatigue or weakness.
Dizziness and Confusion: Disorientation and dizziness can be significant signs.
Rapid Heart Rate: Increased heart rate can accompany the rise in temperature.
Nausea and Vomiting: Digestive upset can be a symptom of severe hyperthermia.
🏡 Home Treatment for Hyperthermia
If your Time Lord shows signs of hyperthermia, here’s what you can do at home:
Move to a Cooler Environment: Get them out of the heat and into a cooler, shaded area immediately.
Hydration: Encourage them to drink cool, non-alcoholic fluids. Water is best. Avoid caffeine.
Cool Compresses: Apply cool, damp cloths to their forehead, neck, armpits, and groin.
Fan Air: Use a fan to circulate air around them or gently fan them to increase evaporative cooling.
Remove Excess Clothing: Help them remove any excess clothing to allow their body to cool down more effectively.
🚑 When to Seek Immediate Help
Temperature above 19°C (66.2°F)
Unresponsiveness or severe confusion
Severe vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
Signs of shock (rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, clammy skin)
You suspect Sepsis (Refer to the Guide Sepsis Emergency Response (SER))
🏥 Advanced Treatment Guide
If home treatments are not effective or the patient's temperature is rising rapidly, seek medical attention immediately. If you're in a TARDIS, the medbay has an automated interface that can guide you through these next steps.
📋 Assessment
Initial Assessment: Check vital signs, including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. For a detailed scoring system, refer to the Guide Gallifreyan Assessment Scoring System (GASS).
Continuous Assessment: Continuously monitor body temperature and vital signs. Use an accurate thermometer capable of reading low temperatures.
🧊 Cooling Methods
IV Fluids: Start intravenous (IV) fluids immediately to rehydrate and cool the body from the inside.
Cooling Blankets: Use cooling blankets or pads to lower body temperature. Ensure these are set to a safe temperature to avoid overcooling.
Ice Packs: Place ice packs in the axillae (armpits), groin, and neck to rapidly reduce core body temperature.
Evaporative Cooling: Use misting fans and cool water sprays to enhance evaporative cooling.
💊 Medications
If deemed appropriate by a medical professional/the TARDIS medbay computer:
Antipyretics: Administer antipyretics to help lower fever.
Anticonvulsants: Administer anticonvulsants to help reduce risk of seizures.
Sedation: In severe cases, sedation might be necessary to control agitation and allow for more effective cooling.
🖥️ Monitoring and Support
Electrolyte Monitoring: Regularly check electrolyte levels, as hyperthermia can cause imbalances.
Cardiac Monitoring: Continuous cardiac monitoring is crucial due to the risk of arrhythmias. Refer to the Guide Gallifreyan CPR for reviving a Gallifreyan in case of cardiac arrest.
Neurological Checks: Regular neurological assessments to monitor for signs of brain damage or seizures.
Mechanical Ventilation: If respiratory distress or failure occurs, mechanical ventilation may be necessary. Follow the ABCDE Assessment Guide to quickly assess and treat a sick Gallifreyan.
🚑 Post-Emergency Care
Once the immediate threat is over, following up with a specialised Gallifreyan medic is vital. Your Gallifreyan might need specific treatments to fully recover and prevent future incidents.

The cold is made for cuddles! - Reader x Rise!Leonardo
GN
Pairings: Leonardo/Reader
Characters included: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, April
Warnings: n/a
Series: No
Summary: Leo knew that Y/N hated being touched, what he didn’t realize was that this was only a thing during the summer since the heat and sweat was just gross to them. So when they admitted that they did enjoy cuddles during the winter season, the freezing Leo had to test that assumption.
Word count: 4913
Authors Note: It’s a bit shorter than I would have liked but honestly I had fun writing the banter between Y/N and Leo haha
Request: I just tread your Rise!Leo x reader birthday fic and OH MY GOD 😚👌 beautiful. Your writing so edible (that is a compliment)
I have a request!
Rise!Leo (cuz you write him so well) x gn!reader who has recently moved to New York from somewhere south, where it gets especially icky from heat, like Arizona. Reader is somewhat touch-starved because they often overheat, but their favorite season is autumn/winter because it's cooler out.
So at some point Leo complains about it being too cold in the lair or how winter's coming, and reader enthusiastically says, "yea, that's the best time of the year!" When Leo questions then about it, they say it's the best time for cuddles!
And then after that, whenever Leo complains that he's cold, reader drags him to the couch or his bedroom to cuddle 🤗. It ends up being a sort of codeword for "I want cuddles"
Hope that's not too specific for you, friend, and feel free to ignore if you're not interested ~🌺👸
Y/N threw their front door of their apartment building open with a happy hum. Their lips turned up into a big smile as they slowly made their way along the pavement. The first snow of the winter had fallen and while the snow along the road was either melted or in a dark grey color, they couldn’t help themself but be content anyhow. There were still white spots all around the city that looked quite magical.
Though the beauty of snow wasn’t the only thing that made Y/N quite so happy. In fact, it wasn’t even necessarily the winter season. No, they frankly loved the cold! Winter and autumn were their favorite months. It brought along a special coziness with it that they just enjoyed so much. These months were made to cuddle up with someone beneath a blanket, drink something warm and watch really bad seasonal movies.
Y/N couldn’t help but chuckle to themself as they rounded yet another corner, a puff of warm air evaporating into a little cloud as they did so. If their friends knew what was going through their head right now, they would probably be mighty confused, seeing how they are usually so touch averse. To be fair that was mostly due to the weather! When everything is hot and sweaty you don’t really want to hug it out with others!
Ah, but yes. Their friends. A lovable and unique bunch. And with unique they meant the quite literal meaning. Their friend group mainly consisted of mutants and even one or two yokai, so yes, unique.
When Y/N moved to New York for college, they were so worried about finding new friends in this huge and new city. Moving across states was already a sobering thought but then there was the whole ordeal of knowing they would be all alone over there. Their family and old friends staying home or even moving further away themselves.
But luckily Y/N ended up having a few classes with the amazing and outgoing April O’Neil. For some reason April began chatting with Y/N whenever she got the chance. Talking about college, the city and the like. This soon turned into April inviting them to hang out at her apartment to study together which later evolved into them sitting in a park with some food and voicing the people who walked through. Y/N still remembers the improvisational argument they had with April when they saw a couple arguing on a park bench. Franklin, they named the couple, did not enjoy that David was constantly eating spinach with cheese and nothing else.
April and Y/N truly were the comedic duo.
It took only a month for the two to become inseparable college friends, which Y/N was thankful for every day. Sure, they might still get used to being in college and living in a new city but at least they had April at their side to work through all those hurdles and oh boy was April ever happy to help.
Now what the Y/N back then didn’t know was, that being friends with April meant that there was a chance that they would be standing face to face with mutants.
Not going to lie, the first meeting could have gone better. Y/N was hanging out with April and offered to walk to the nearest store to grab some snacks. When they came back, they were met with four mutant brothers that interrogated April as to why she was suddenly sending Mayhem, April’s teleporting yokai pet, so often to their place to be pet-sitted.
It took a while for Y/N to realize that they were in fact not dreaming and that this was real. They couldn’t help but poke and prod the brothers to make sure they were in fact standing in front of them.
Nowadays though, they were very good friends with the four turtle mutants. Most of the time after college classes they would immediately swing by the lair to relax and bring over some things for the turtles that they have problems getting on their own.
While they got along with everyone, even Splinter surprisingly, they got along with Leo the best. It wasn’t unusual for both to start talking in puns and sassing each other non-stop. Whenever this happened the others in the vicinity will groan in annoyance and make sure to get away from this.
As Y/N’s mind wandered back to these memories they finally reached their destination. A little coffee shop they found once when they were on a walk to clear their mind from all the college work. They loved this little place, it was comfy and it had the best drinks.
It’s the winter season so grabbing something warm was only natural and since they did announce to the Mad Dogs that they would swing by, they also grabbed some warm drinks for the family. They just hoped the drinks would still be warm enough when they arrived.
Once they received the drinks and paid, they got back out the shop and looked for the nearest sewer entrance. With their phone in hand, and an app that Donnie made for them so they could find their way around underground, they began their trek through the stinky sewers. Honestly, they were still not sure how the mutant family managed to keep the smell out of their home.
It didn’t take too long for them to reach the lair entrance. While Y/N was already in a happy mood and had a smile on their face, they couldn’t help themself as their grin grew even wider. They just felt at home here.
“Hello, guys! Delivery!”
The first to poke their head into the living space was Donnie. His eyes immediately landing on the tray with the cups in Y/N’s hands. His sour expression relaxed a tiny bit, but Y/N did notice the change.
He slinked his way towards them “Ah! Greetings, Y/N! You brought us drinks?”
Y/N nodded “Yep! It’s winter! Snow is out! Perfect weather for a nice warm cup of coffee, cocoa or tea.” They grabbed the coffee they specifically ordered for Donnie and placed it in his hands. As the warm cup made contact with his cold hand, he let out a satisfied sigh.
“Ugh, winter.” A voice spoke up next to the two. “Hate this season.”
It was Leo, Mikey and Raph stood next to him.
Y/N couldn’t help but roll their eyes at Leo’s statement, they knew Leo hated the cold, which made sense seeing how the guys were cold-blooded, but still. Not waiting for the others to ask about the drinks Y/N immediately moved to hand each their drinks.
Mikey immediately held the warm cup close to himself, taking a cautious sip while Raph was clearly just using the cup to warm up his fingers.
Leo moved the cup against his cheek, letting out a satisfied hum as he enjoyed the warmth.
“Don’t you guys have ways to heat up the lair? I figured Donnie would have already done something about it.”
Donnie took a big sip from his coffee “Well the lair is pretty open, so we opted mostly to heating up the closed rooms we got. So mainly the projector room, our rooms and of course my lab.”
Leo nodded “Yes, yes. Exactly.” He then used his free hand and placed it on top of Y/N’s shoulder, softly pushing them along “That’s why we chill in my room. I got some comics that I found and wanna show you and it’s way too cold here. Come on.”
As Leo continued to push them along, Y/N gave the other brothers an apologetic look, but they just shrugged their shoulders. That’s just how Leo was with Y/N. Loved hanging out with them and often kidnapping them to hang out alone. According to Leo it’s just because the two are just the bestest of friends. Something April loved to challenge seeing how the two spend a lot of time together in and outside of college.
Before Y/N and Leo could disappear, they could hear the rest yell out a quick “Thank you for the drinks!”
Once inside Leo’s room, he let the human go and immediately jumped into his bed, wrapping his blanket around his body with a sour expression. A floor heater was sitting in the middle of the room, but it was obvious it was only doing so much. It was alright for Y/N but they knew that Leo was more sensitive towards the cold than them.
“So, the comics?” they asked as they shrugged of their coat.
Leo just nodded towards his desk, refusing to move his arms out of the warm blankets.
Y/N couldn’t help but chuckle silently as they walked towards the desk, grabbing one of the comics. It was about a superhero detective, something they haven’t seen yet and as they skipped through the comics they could see why. The art was definitely interesting to say the least. They would love to get a breakdown from Mikey to see what he was thinking of it.
When Y/N looked back towards Leo, it somehow looked like he cuddled himself even deeper into the blankets. They let out a humorous snort “You really are turning into a Leo-Burrito.”
As a response Leo just stared blanky at them. His fingers were poking out of the blankets to hold the warm cup and move it to his lips so he could take sips. Probably trying to pace it a bit so he had more of the warmth.
“I should take a picture of this.”
And when Leo’s eyes widened, protests leaving his mouth, Y/N immediately grabbed their phone, snapping a picture of the blushing and bundled up turtle.
He sighed “You are more annoying than usual. You are so happy today.”
Y/N let out a bit of an evil laugh as they looked at the picture of the pouting Leo-Burrito, sending it along to April immediately “Well, it snowed! I love the snow!”
“I really don’t understand how you can love this time of the year! It’s so cold and annoying and oh yeah, cold.” He made sure to scowl, his brow ridge pulled as low as possible.
“Are you kidding? This is the best time of the year! It’s the year to get warm drinks, cuddle with people under a nice warm blanket and watch horrible movies!”
This seemed to surprise Leo. His scowl turned to an expression of confusion mixed with surprise, there was a slight blush on his face that Y/N attributed to him feeling cold.
Leo’s eyes narrowed as he stared at Y/N, only for his eyes suddenly to dart to his drink “Uh, you? And cuddles? Since when? You don’t even like it when we put our arm around your shoulders.”
“Well, when we met it was summer and all and during the warmer days it’s just … icky. I’m sweating and hating it. Getting hugged and all means more warmth and more sweat. It’s annoying but that’s the great thing about the colder months, I guess. I’m not entirely like... touch-averse, it just has never been the right moment?”
Somehow this became awkward, and Y/N could feel how an embarrassed blush made their way towards their face. To hide this, they turned back to the comic in their hands, still watching Leo from the corner of their eyes.
Leo was nervously biting down on his lip as he seemed to mull something over. It was funny how easy of a time Y/N had when it came to reading Leo. The number of times they surprised him by telling him exactly what was going through his mind and offering him to listen to his worries was more than they could count on their hands by now. Unbeknownst to them Leo appreciated this detail about them immensely.
He had problems to voice his thoughts to the others, especially his worries, after all he was the confident one! So, to have someone just straight up almost read his mind and offer a listening ear was a big help.
“W-Well, I don’t believe you.” He suddenly spoke up. Leo must have realized how stupid this sounded, at least when Y/N looked at him with a raised eyebrow because he couldn’t look at their face as he stared at the wall next to him. His lip jutted out into a bit of a pout as he acted like he was deep in thought.
“What? You want me to prove it to you?” they laughed “Or do you just wanna get a hug and use me for my body warmth?”
Aghast Leo finally looked back at Y/N. Hit the nail on the head, huh? The blush on his face definitely darkened, he opened his mouth to most definitely say something witty and sassy in return, but Y/N stopped him by putting the comic back down on the desk and moving over to the blue turtle.
Leo was just staring at them with a slightly open mouth, curious to see what they were up to. When Y/N stood in front of his bed and looked at him expectantly he asked “What?”
“Move, idiot. Let me into your burrito!”
But Leo didn’t dare to move, so Y/N forcefully pulled on the blanket to open it enough to let themselves in. He shrieked as the colder air hit him which made Y/N laugh again. He was such a baby when it came to the cold.
Y/N made sure to sit down next to the taller terrapin and wrap the blue blanket around the two. They could tell that Leo was tense as they made themself comfortable next to him. He was usually very much okay with being all touchy-feely with his family, including April, so this surprised Y/N.
Slowly Y/N grabbed the almost finished drink from Leo’s hands and placed it to the side. Leo let out a sad whine as the warmth left him. Instead, Y/N grabbed the turtle’s arms and laid them around their body, pulling their own arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer to themself. Surprisingly Leo didn’t object to it and just let himself be guided by them.
It took a second but as Y/N gave him a little squeeze to show that this was alright, he let out a soft sigh as he took the chance to bury himself deeper into the hug. He was now pressing his cold snout into the crook of their neck which sent a shiver along Y/N’s body at first contact.
Seeing how this was the proper first time Y/N hugged Leo, they were a bit surprised with how cold his body was. Of course, they knew that this was a thing and they have felt it every now and again when their hands brushed, or when he laid his hand on their shoulder and arms, but it was something different as he basically tried to bury himself inside their body.
His legs searched for contact with Y/N’s, which soon resulted in their legs being intertwined. Y/N slowly moved a hand on Leo’s shell, lazily tracing along the pattern while their other hand rested on the back of his head “See? All good, right?”
Leo nodded slowly, his face still pressed into their neck “Mhm, warm.” Was all he said.
“I knew it! You are just using me for my body heat! I can’t believe you!”
“ ‘m sure am.”
“The devious criminal even admits to it.”
“This devious criminal will keep you for himself. You can’t leave this place ever now. I officially ‘m kidnapping you.” His voice was still muffled by him pressing himself against Y/N. They could feel his mouth move against their collarbone which tickled them, but they managed to suppress a laugh that was threatening to leave their chest.
“I should yell for help then, I guess. I’m sure your brothers are nicer to me.”
In return Leo just nodded, letting out a very non-committal “Mhm” in affirmation.
Y/N could tell he was getting sleepy. They made sure to lay securely against the wall of the room and gave Leo another squeeze as a silent encouragement to fall asleep. If he understood that or not, it didn’t matter, since he was out cold a minute later.
With a smile on their face Y/N made sure to continue tracing his shell. It was a nice feeling with how his weight was laying on them, his arms securely wrapped around their body, their legs tangled together. It felt comfortable and safe. Almost intimate even.
Y/N definitely thought the plastron would probably be uncomfortable on their body but somehow it was fine. They knew it wasn’t as hard as the shell, since it bended and moved along as he did his acrobatics, but it was still way firmer than skin.
This was also the first time they got the chance to take a proper look at his shell and let their hands run along it. They had to admit that they were often curious about it and would have loved to take a closer look at it, but it wasn’t anything they just could ask him about. Not that he wouldn’t have let them, they were positive, but the teasing would have been horrible and frankly they didn’t want to give him this satisfaction.
They could only imagine him saying something stupid like “Oh? It only makes sense you wanna take a better look at my awesome bod!” Something that would have definitely ended up with them trying to punch Leo.
As Y/N slowly closed their eyes, sensing the drowsiness, they began humming a tune. It wasn’t any specific tune, just something that came up and felt calming to them. The tune died in their throat though as they finally succumbed to their sleepiness as well.
Y/N woke up first, Leo was still wrapped in their arms but he too woke up when Y/N had the horrific realization that it was actually pretty late and that there were still projects that had to be done. There were silent, incoherent protests from Leo as they untangled their limbs from his and moved out of his bed.
“The comics were great, Leo.” Y/N laughed.
Leo buried himself further into the blanket, probably enjoying the rest of the warmth that Y/N so graciously donated.
“They are. Gotta get over here again soon so you can take a better look at them.” He murmured still sleep drunk.
“Ah, yes, and not for another cuddle session so you can steal more of my precious body heat.”
“What can I say? ‘s cold.”
“I might as well ask for payment if that is how this will go.”
“Your hugs are great. The others will be jealous. After all I’m the first to get a proper hug from the Y/N.” A yawn ended Leo’s quip.
Y/N just gave him an affirmative hum as they moved to give him a little pat on his head. He moved his head up so their hand connected with his cheek. Leo’s smug expression didn’t go unnoticed.
“Alright, see ya bud. I’ll try to come over tomorrow.”
There was only a soft “Yay!” from Leo as Y/N finally tore themself away from him and made their way out of the lair. They would have said goodbye to the others but all of them were probably bunkered down in their rooms and Y/N really needed to get back to their apartment in order to do some work. These due dates won’t wait for no one. Well, they kind of do it’s just a thing of if you are prepared or not but this wasn’t the point right now.
Once home though Y/N spent a good amount of time to chat with April viaphone and joke about the Leo-Burrito picture before they finally sat down to study and work. Still, they couldn’t help but sometimes get the picture of Leo out. It was funny okay? Also he looked adorable. Let’s ignore the fact that this was also amazing blackmailing material.
If they could they would love to print and frame the picture. Just for teasing purposes of course.
The next day Y/N made sure to make their way to the lair again after doing some chores and work. This time April joined them since they met up for lunch. Both happily gossiping about some professors and supposed university mysteries that April was currently investigating.
“I don’t think they have the capabilities to create ‘new life’, April”
April just scowled “Well, I don’t mean anything like a full sentient six foot beings! Just something small. We both saw weirder hanging out with the turtles.”
Y/N rolled their eyes “Why would our university, that specializes particularly in creative writing and journalism and the like, create their own lifeform. It just doesn’t add up!”
“That’s why I’m investigating! The rumors must have come from somewhere and usually there is a kernel of truth in there!” she groaned as the two rounded the last corner before arriving at the lair.
“I’m gonna predict and say that people are trying to hatch some bird eggs.”
Before April could retort, the two students already stood in the lair hence why Y/N cupped their mouth and yelled out “Boys! Your superhero, super friends are here and we are dying for some entertainment!”
“Ya know, we can just walk in without announcing it every time.” But Y/N just shrugged at that, they started doing it when they got to know the family and at this point it was just the procedure they always did.
Raph was the first to appear but his brothers were close behind. Leo had one of his eyebrows up as he looked at his two friends “What? Are we your personal jesters now?”
Y/N nodded happily, stepping closer to Leo with their arms crossed in front of their chest “Yep! I thought that was clear ever since the start of our friendship? I mean you always act like a clown, so I just assumed…”
“Hardy-har-har. Keep talking, let’s see who will be the clown by the end of this.” Leo took a step closer as well.
Before the two could start their joke argument fully, April stepped in between the two “Okay, kids! No arguing! It’s movie time!”
“Yes, please! Let’s get into the warm projector room!” Mikey spoke up, pulling April along. Leo followed suit and laid his arm around Y/N. At first Y/N could tell he didn’t dare to put the weight of his arm fully on their shoulders but when they didn’t protest or shake him off, he finally did relax and forced them to move along to follow the others.
Leo really took advantage of the fact that Y/N told him that during the winter they didn’t mind body contact. They enjoyed the contact actually. It’s been a long while since they had a proper hug or even a cuddle session like yesterday. Okay, maybe they were also taking advantage of this whole situation. Yet, it surprised them that Leo didn’t tease them about it. Made some quips or any kind of witty remarks.
Then again if he did Y/N would definitely stop gracing him with their hugs and warmth so there might be that.
The projector room was definitely warmer than the open living space of the lair but the differently colored blankets did show that the turtles were still struggling. Being cold-blooded must be rough.
The turtles scrambled beneath their respectively colored blankets while April worked to get the projector running to get the movie started. Y/N on the other hand went into the kitchen to prepare some popcorn and maybe make just some simple hot cocoa for the freezing brothers. It might not reach Mikey’s level but it was mostly for warmth than anything. Also their own cocoa wasn’t that bad it just wasn’t Mikey good!
Y/N first brought the popcorn bowls into the room only to vanish again and bring everyone their warm cups.
“Lately you are spoiling us with warm drinks, Y/N.” Raph noted as he took a sip.
But Y/N just chuckled “I bought you some yesterday and made you guys some today. If that is spoiling you then I’m really sorry for you.”
“Still appreciated!” Surprisingly it was Donnie who said that. He might put on a bad boy persona but some warm drinks managed to break through his shell after all, huh?
“Okay, got it! Y/N is amazing! Now let’s put on the movie, I’ve been working my butt off the last few days I can really use this right now!” April said as she started the movie.
Y/N wanted to retort that her work was snooping around campus all day but they bit the comment back. Instead they took their coat and threw it on Leo as they made themself comfortable next to him. He just squawked in surprise as he shook the coat off his head.
“Since you are always so cold.” Y/N whispered, making sure to open their eyes wide and putting on a pout to show off some very sarcastic pity.
Leo just huffed but still moved their coat around his shoulders, his eyes now transfixed on the action movie that began.
Watching a movie with the family was always fun. Mikey loved gushing about the artistic choices, Donnie tended to explain some effects or why something didn’t make sense while Raph showed his appreciation for any kind of cool action sequences and Leo couldn’t help but throw in some possible one-liners for the hero of the movie that made everyone groan in the room.
April had a clear weakness for any journalist kind of characters that made sure to get themselves involved with the plot in order to find out more as to what was happening. Y/N on the other hand was in a similar boat like Leo. They couldn’t help themself as they made puns. They really felt smug and happy whenever they made a pun that resulted in the majority of the room to burst out into “boo!” and popcorn being thrown their way. At this point they could tell when it would happen and they always tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to catch some popcorn with their mouth. Sometimes this would result in Raph trying to throw popcorn into Y/N’s mouth as they darted across the room.
Right now though Y/N was leaning against a beanbag next to Leo with a few pieces of popcorn littering their body that they didn’t notice.
Leo placed his empty cup on the ground with a soft clink, his gaze tore off the movie to look at Y/N.
At first Y/N didn’t notice, to engrossed in the movie as the hero ran after some goons. Their own eyes following the action until they suddenly noticed that someone was very clearly staring at them from the corners of their eyes.
When Y/N turned their head to quizzically look at Leo, they noticed how close he really was. He looked shy, a question on his face but too scared to actually ask. There was an adorable blush on his face.
Not expecting this sudden closeness the human could feel their cheeks blush as well only for a thought to suddenly enter their mind which made them affectionately roll their eyes.
“What is it, Leonardo?”
“Y/N?”
“Uh-Huh?”
“I’m cold.”
Y/N’s eyes wandered over his form to indeed notice the small shivers that wrecked through his body but the way he sheepishly looked at them they knew he also just wanted another cuddle session. Once again, Y/N was actually pretty good at reading what was going through his mind.
With a soft grin they scooted closer to him “Well, let me in your little burrito then.”
“Yes!” he cheered quietly, not wanting that the others heard him.
He happily opened up his blanket and waited for Y/N to scoot closer. Once they were close enough he threw the blanket around them and practically pulled them into his lap. Wrapping his arms around them while simultaneously nuzzling his face against their collarbone. In return Y/N threw their one arm around Leo and slowly traced along his shoulder, their other hand rested on one of Leo’s arms that was wrapped around their body.
“Happy?” Y/N chuckled.
Once again Leo nodded against their body “Yes. Very warm. Very comfy.”
“The thief strikes again.” They sighed somberly.
Leo’s chuckle vibrated though his chest “I did tell you that I was kidnapping you but you still managed to flee. Still dumb enough to fall right back into my trap.”
“Sure, Leo. Believe what you want but we both know I just took pity on you.”
“I love your pity handouts.”
Okay, that was enough. Y/N pinched the skin on his arm as their only answer. Leo hissed in surprise and as he wanted to argue back, Y/N made a point of staring right at the movie. Ignoring him completely. Leo leaned back against the beanbag with an annoyed grumble.
He hated it when Y/N did things like that, even if they didn’t say anything it still felt like they had the last word in their argument. Instead he moved their body flush against his so he could lay his head on their shoulder to watch the movie.
“I swear to god Leo if you use this chance to sniff me-“
“Oh my god, Y/N! That’s weird!”
Y/N couldn’t help themself to laugh as they saw Leo’s horrified expression that was laced with a deep blush.

K2 week 2023
Day 4: Confession
Word count: 826
Kyle wonders why Kenny never takes his parka off. The answer is much darker than he expects.
It was too damn hot.
That was the reason why Kyle was currently shuffling alongside the road at one in the morning. Heat radiated from the concrete and a cloudless sky full of stars twinkled overhead. Every bit of snow has evaporated long ago leaving nothing but parched brown lawns and sidewalks hot enough to fry an egg on.
Kyle had spent the past four or so hours tossing and turning beneath a thin Terrance And Phillip blanket with the A.C. on blast and the ceiling fan turned all the way up. Despite his efforts a film of sweat coated his entire body, making sleep impossible. He was still hot and sweaty as he aimlessly walked through town, but at least now he was hopefully burning enough energy to get some shuteye before the sun rose.
There wasn't much to see. Everyone else in town was tucked away in their homes. Occasionally Kyle saw a window glowing orange or flickering from a TV screen, but those were the only signs of human life he encountered from the sleepy mountain town. He had spent so long by himself that he had begun to space out and nearly tripped when he finally bumped into another person.
The redhead muttered an apology as he rebalanced himself and craned his neck to get a look at the person he had just slammed half his body into. Two beady blue eyes peered back at him from behind a thick tangerine jacket.
"Oh. Hey", Kyle said more awkwardly than he intended. "Didn't expect to see you here".
Kenny shrugged and put his hands in his pockets. "I was just taking a walk. It's hot as fuck at my place. No point hanging around there".
"Is your A.C. still broken?".
Kenny nodded. "Yep. It's unbearable. We have fans for circulation, but I'm still sweating just sitting on the couch".
Kyle set his jaw. "You need to get that fixed. It's not safe to be without air conditioning in this kind of heat".
The other boy exhaled through his nostrils. "I know", he said with a slight edge.
Kyle tried not to take offence at his tone. Kenny knew that his friends loved him, but he always got irritated whenever someone tried to teach him how to be safe. Kyle wanted to be respectful of his feelings, but that often conflicted with Kyle's own need to make sure he stays out of danger.
Kenny readjusted his parka and wiped sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand. His glove became noticeably darker with the added moisture.
"Speaking of health hazards". Kyle could practically feel Kenny roll his eyes at the first half of his sentence. "Why don't you take off your jacket? I'm sure you'd be much cooler without it".
He expected Kenny to wave him off and tell him to mind his business. Instead the other boy's pupils widened and his entire body went stiff as if he had been caught with his hand in a jar.
They were both quiet for a minute. Finally Kenny spoke. "You wouldn't get it".
"I want to try".
Kenny looked at the ground and folded his hands together. "It's like... Sometimes you'll dream that you're falling. And you always wake up before you land".
Kyle nodded.
"Yeah. I have that dream a lot. Except I always land first".
The other boy swallowed. "Oh...".
"Mhm", Kenny continued. "It fucking hurts. I can't move or think or breathe. Sometimes I can't see either. And when I can...". He put his arms over his stomach. "...I see my guts spilling out. And it's not just falling. I've been set on fire, eaten alive, run over, impaled, shot, drowned, poisoned, and everything else".
Kenny smirked bitterly at Kyle's horrified expression. "For a while I had like... not a bucket list, but the opposite of that. A list of ways that I wanted to die. And I'd cross things off it when I kicked the bucket in a new way. I don't keep track of it anymore 'cause I already got most of them".
"What does any of this have to do with your jacket?".
Kenny raised his eyebrows. "Hm? Oh. If I wear the parka a lot then it appears in my dream too. It helps keep my innards inside. It's still really painful and scary, but at least I don't have to look at myself smeared across the street".
"Man", Kyle said quietly. "That's nuts".
Kenny shrugged, his brow set into a straight, hard line. "It's been like this my whole life. I've tried everything, but it keeps happening anyway. No matter how careful and safe I am. It. Always. Happens".
Another uncomfortable silence passed between them.
Then Kenny put his arms behind his head and started turning on his heal. "Well, anyway. I gotta head home. See ya tomorrow, man".
"See ya", Kyle said back. "Stay safe out there".
"As if I have a choice".

Hey if you're experiencing a heatwave, here's some tips on keeping yourself comfy and cool
#1: open your windows in the early morning to let cool air in, and then shut your windows when outdoor temp exceeds indoor temp. This helps you start the day with a cooler home
#2: avoid running any appliance in your home that produces heat. This doesn't mean just not using your oven, but also leaving large screens off. They will heat up your space, and the bigger the screen the more surface area it has to diffuse it's heat into the air in your home.
#3: cold packs are your friends! Placing a cold pack on your chest, under your arm, or on your inner thigh directly under the groin will cool down blood by taking advantage of major arteries that run close to the skin. Your blood is a HUGE part of temperature regulation, and placing a cold pack on a high flow area can help your blood diffuse more heat out of your body and return to the deeper tissues at a cooler temperature.
#4: Help your pets keep cool by wiping them down with a damp towel. DON'T SCRUB IT INTO THEIR FUR! Evaporation is what is gonna help keep them cool, and the water will readily evaporate from the top layer of hair but NOT if it's soaked fully into the fur. That's why you use a damp towel, not a sopping wet one.
#5: Eat Cold Meals; if you don't have to heat it up that helps with minimizing appliance usage AND a cold meal is a chunk of mass that's going to be in the center of your body for a bit while digestion gets started. Just like sending cooler blood back into your system can help avoid overheating, so can choosing cold meals and liquids to put into your body on a hot day.
#6: Lay Your Ass Down. Seriously. It's a heatwave, stop trying to squeeze in yard work or extra chores. Sit your ass down and rest. PARTICULARLY if you have a medical condition relating to your heart, since the human body responds to heat stress by dilating the circulatory system and increasing the rate of circulation. That's why your skin flushes: your body opens up all the tiny capillaries to get more hot blood near the skin to cool off and dissipate heat.
#7: Take a shower, as cool as you can stand. Particularly if you're suffering from heat stress already and your skin has flushed. Expose all that blood and skin to cool water to help bring everything down a notch or six.
#8: I'm not gonna say Drink Water because we all know water is good when you're feeling hot. What I AM gonna say is remember YOUR BODY CANNOT UPTAKE ALL THAT HYDRATION WITHOUT SOME SUGAR, AND CANNOT RETAIN THAT WATER WITHOUT SALT! Without a small amount of glucose (simple sugar) your intenstines cannot take up all that water efficiently and you'll piss it out. Salt and other electrolytes help you hold on to your fluids. If you're drinking loads of water but your mouth is still dry, consider some OJ with a side of saltines.

I think the thing I appreciate most about North America is that while it might be miserable outside, and cold and dark and wet, on your return home the house stays the same temperature and the temperature is comfortable. It's warmer inside than outside. You don't need to constantly have hot showers to get your core body temperate back to 38. You don't need hand warmers or gloves inside. You don't need to cycle through two heatpacks even with the aircon on reverse cycle. You can touch your covered skin with your bare hands without flinching because your fingers aren't cold. Your toes have sensation. You can't see your own breath fog in the air.
Australian houses are built to stay cold, and they do that very well. But they're also without insulation. They're concrete slabs and double brick with nothing between. There was a government initiative to insulate roofs that killed a bunch of people.
The upside is that unless it's more than a few days over forty in summer, the house is kind of nice as long as spiders don't colonise your bed while you sleep because it's cooler inside. There's a few weeks a year the heat is completely intolerable if you don't have aircon, but you can always jump in the shower fully dressed and enjoy evaporative cooling for the next half hour.
But. Like. Temperature control. In houses so much older than I've ever seen. Central heating, or whatever it is.
Do you know how nice it is to not be cold in the space that you pay to live in? I have vascular and circulatory diseases and I turn blue inside a house I pay to live in. A lot of people in Australia complain about how cold it is, because we never come home to a warm house. And we don't have the kind of clothing to facilitate how cold it is inside.
Our housing industry standards are so subpar. There's no double glazing. I've heard our houses described as glorified tents and that's pretty accurate.
So it's very odd to experience a winter where it's bitterly cold outside, and then come home to a warm house, a hot shower and wear only flannels and socks to bed. No seven layers of jackets and jumpers and oodies and dressing gowns. Just pyjamas.
I would like a heapack, but it's not the necessity it would be at home. Rather it would be the comfort and familiarity of home it would offer.
Anyway, I guess I understand 'baby, it's cold outside' a little better this November.

Chapter 5 - Steve
Words: 1326
Here is the post that started it of and chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4.
“Whatcha thinking, Steve the Hair?”
“Jesus, Buckley.”
I laugh quietly as Robin shoves me against the cold glass, perching on the edge of the window seat. I drop Eddie’s hand as inconspicuously as I can.
“So?” she asks, elbowing my arm, “A penny for your thoughts. Go.”
I sigh, “My parents are out of the house for a week. You know what I would have done two years ago?”
“Throw a massive rager, hook up with some chick, get really drunk and maybe take some drugs?”
“Yep.” I survey the room, “But now? Now I invite over a bunch of highschoolers, my ex, a lesbian and a murder suspect to play D&D.”
Robin smiles, “D’you miss the old Steve?”
“The absolute douchebag that hated anyone different, was homophobic and was extremely posessive of my girlfriend?” I ask, “No. No, I don’t miss him.”
“You shouldn’t.” Robin confirms.
I fiddle with my hands. I’d been planning this. I’d been planning it for a while. “Robin…” I start. She raises an eyebrow. “I…I just…”
“Steve, if you’re gonna re-confess love to me,” she says, “I don’t know what to tell you. The only thing about you I find romantically attractive is your ex. Exes.” I laugh quietly.
“Yeah, no, I just…” Come on Harrington. Just do it. “I…”
A stir can be heard from behind us. Nancy’s eyes slowly open. I notice the blanket she’s using is tucked carefully around her body and, remembering that Robin was sharing it with her before she came over here, smile. Robin cares about Nancy, that much is obvious.
“Hey,” Robin says, “Did we wake you?”
“Nah, I’m a light sleeper.” Nancy replies, rubbing her eyes, “And that moonlight’s fricking bright.”
She gently moves Max and Eleven so they’re leaning on each other instead of her. Her feet patter against the cold wood as she makes her way over to us and Robin moves to the floor to give her room on the window seat. But now Nancy’s listening I can’t…I can’t do it. My slight confidence in coming out to Robin evaporates like smoke. Or is it mist? Or steam?
“Steve was just about to reveal a mysterious truth about himself.” Robin says, her head leaning against Nancy’s knees. Nancy looks up with interest, snarkiness and yet, still, kindness.
“Oh?” she asks. Oh indeed.
“Nah, it’s nothing.” I rub the back of my neck. Robin raises her eyebrows.
“No, it’s not.” she says, “Tell me. Now.”
I frown, “And what if I just…didn’t?” Robin groans.
“C’mon, Rob,” Nancy says softly, “Don’t push him.” Robin concedes.
Her and Nancy begin muttering to each other about - God, I don’t know - and I stare at the moon. The glow is magnificent and powerful, falling directly onto the boy asleep opposite me. And now I’m staring at Eddie. I swear it was an accident.
He looks so beautiful in the nightlight. His hair, pulled in a messy ponytail, boasts stripes of moonlit white in between the charcoal black. His knees tucked up to his chin, he looks so…small. I just wanna kiss him, really.
As if his brain caught my thoughts, his breath stutters to a wake. He glances up, a cocky smile already perched on his lips.
“Hey b-” he says, taking in the girls just in time, “...Harrington.”
Guilt flashes across Nancy’s face, “Oh, crap, were we too loud? Sorry.”
“Ouch, Wheeler.” Eddie says, “You’re that sad I’m awake? C’mon man.”
He stretches, exposing a strip of skin below his shirt, and stands. “I’m going for some air. Anyone coming?”
Robin glances at him skeptically, “It’s like 2 am.”
“Your point being?”
“I’ll come.” I offer, and Eddie smiles quickly as he outstretches his hand. I hesitate for a split second before accepting.
We head outside, where the warm night is cooler than usual. Summer is slowly reaching its end and soon Eddie will be returning to his remote home. Alone. Where the Christians of Hawkins can’t hurt him.
“You look sad,” Eddie observes, perched on the railing of my porch. His eyes are slightly furrowed.
“No, it’s…” I look down at my hands, “It’s nothing.”
Eddie frowns at me, in thought. I avert my gaze. He clicks his tongue and grabs my hand, leading me away from the light of the house and the window. We traipse around my house to a darkened corner, away from street lamps and random neighbors up at 2.
“Wipe that smile off your face,” Eddie says, grinning even as he says it, “I didn’t bring you here to make out with you.”
I contort my face into an unimpressed expression.
“Ok, maybe we will.” he concedes, “But first, you’re gonna tell me what the issue is.”
“I told you, it’s nothing.”
Eddie’s hands are either side of my face and his lips are on mine before anything else can happen. I don’t think, don’t hear, don’t see, all I do is feel his silken hair in my hands, my back pressed against the wall, and sink into him. But now he’s pulling away, his intense black eyes burrowing into my brown ones.
“Is it, Harrington? Is it nothing?” he asks. I attempt a cocky smile.
“Did you just kiss me so I would talk?” I ask. Eddie shrugs.
“Maybe. What’s it to you?”
I clear my throat. “Fine,” I mutter, almost too quiet for him to hear, “I just…I don’t want you to go…”
Eddie’s eyebrows raise in clear confusion, “Go?”
“Home.” I say, still staring at my feet, “Away. Go, to your home, which is away from here. Away from me.”
“We call almost every day.” Eddie says softly.
“It’s not the same.”
He stays silent.
“I wish we could meet more,” I continue, “I wish Hawkins hadn’t driven you away, I wish I hadn’t spent nearly a year thinking you were dead, I wish I had asked you out ages ago.” I scoff. “I wish I could kiss you in public”
Eddie sucks in his breath. We never really explicitly discuss the biggest elephant in every room, but we need to. I need to.
“I can’t bring myself to tell anyone we’re dating…” I mutter “and-”
“Hey, there you are.” Robin says, appearing from around the house. She swipes the back of her hand against her mouth and skids to a stop in front of us. “Why’re you over in a dark, secluded corner? Just here to sell some drugs?”
“The only drug here is me.” Eddie says, grinning. All evidence of the somberity of the conversation mere moments ago has vanished. I clear my throat.
“What’s up?” I ask, very obviously diverting the attention away from us, “Where’s Nancy?”
“Max had a nightmare again,” Robin says, “so Nancy’s comforting her.” There’s a palpable tenderness to the way she says her name.
“Hey, Eddie,” I say, forcing myself to leave his side, “Feel free to raid my fridge. There’ll be some good midnight snacks somewhere.”
Eddie winks at both me and Robin, immediately understanding what I’m trying to hint at. Then, as he walks away from the two of us, he shoots me a double thumbs up. I really can’t ask for a better boyfriend.
I get out a cigarette to steal myself, but Robin snatches it immediately. “No,” she demands, “Gross. Stop.” I groan.
“What’s up with you tonight?” she asks, staring at me, “You’re agitated, you’re twitchy, you’re smoking. What’s wrong?”
I should do it. I know I should. It’s only fair to Eddie, literally the best thing to happen to me. It’s only fair to me, to finally share this massive weight with my best friend. I should take a deep breath, stop being ashamed of who I am and tell my lesbian friend that I’m bi. It should be easy.
“It’s…” Fuck. “It’s nothing.”
“Are you sure?” There’s concern in Robin’s eyes and I hate doing this to both of us.
“Yeah.” I mutter, “Everything’s fine.”
Holy shit it’s been a while. Sorry about that lmao. I hope you enjoyed this slightly-shorter chapter, and know I have all the next chapters lined up, so it’s only a matter of posting them.

How to Keep Dogs Cool in Summer: The Ultimate Guide
As the temperature rises, it becomes crucial to know how to keep dogs cool in summer. Just like us, our furry friends can struggle with the heat, and it's our responsibility to ensure they stay comfortable and safe. This guide covers everything you need to know about keeping dogs cool in summer, from recognizing the signs of overheating to practical tips and products that can help.
Understanding the Importance of Keeping Dogs Cool in Summer
Keeping your dog cool during the hot summer months isn't just about comfort—it's about preventing serious health issues like heatstroke. Dogs are more susceptible to heat than humans, and understanding why can help you better protect them.
Why Dogs Are More Susceptible to Heat
The Physiology of Dogs and Heat
Dogs don't sweat like humans do. Instead, they rely on panting and limited sweating through their paw pads to regulate their body temperature. This makes them much more prone to overheating, especially during the hot summer months.
Signs of Overheating in Dogs
Recognizing the signs of overheating is crucial. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and in severe cases, vomiting and collapse. Being aware of these signs can help you act quickly to cool your dog down.
Tumblr media
Effective Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool
Providing Plenty of Fresh Water
Hydration is key to keeping your dog cool. Always ensure your dog has access to fresh, cool water. Hydration helps regulate their body temperature and prevents heat-related illnesses.
Tips for Encouraging Drinking
Encourage your dog to drink more by placing water bowls in multiple locations around your home and yard. Adding ice cubes to the water can make it more appealing, and offering flavored water or a dog-friendly electrolyte solution can also help.
Creating a Cool Environment
Indoor Cooling Solutions
Keep your home cool with fans and air conditioning. Create a designated cool area with a cooling mat or a damp towel for your dog to lie on. Darkening the room with shades or curtains can also help reduce indoor temperatures.
Outdoor Cooling Solutions
If your dog spends time outside, provide plenty of shade and access to fresh water. Consider using a kiddie pool filled with cool water or setting up a misting system to help keep your dog cool.
Using Cooling Products
Cooling Mats and Beds
Cooling mats and beds are designed to help dogs regulate their body temperature. These products use materials that stay cool or can be refrigerated for extra cooling power.
Cooling Vests and Bandanas
Cooling vests and bandanas are great for walks and outdoor activities. They work by holding water and slowly releasing it through evaporation, which helps to cool your dog as they move.
Tumblr media
Timing Walks and Playtime
Best Times of Day for Outdoor Activities
Plan walks and playtime for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid the midday heat to reduce the risk of overheating.
Adjusting Exercise Routines
On especially hot days, reduce the intensity and duration of your dog's exercise. Opt for shorter, more frequent walks and incorporate indoor play to keep them active without exposing them to extreme heat.
Offering Frozen Treats
DIY Frozen Dog Treat Recipes
Making frozen treats at home is easy and fun. Try freezing broth, yogurt, or pureed fruits in ice cube trays. These treats can help cool your dog from the inside out.
Store-Bought Options
There are many store-bought frozen treats available that are specifically designed for dogs. These can be a convenient and tasty way to help keep your dog cool.
Grooming Tips to Beat the Heat
Proper Grooming Practices
Regular grooming helps to remove excess fur that can trap heat. Brushing your dog frequently and keeping their coat well-maintained is essential during the summer.
Avoiding Shaving Certain Breeds
While it might seem logical to shave your dog to keep them cool, some breeds have coats that actually help insulate them from the heat. Always consult with your vet or a professional groomer before shaving your dog.
Special Considerations for Different Dog Breeds
Breeds More Prone to Heat Stress
Brachycephalic Breeds: Breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus have shorter snouts, which makes it harder for them to cool down through panting. These breeds require extra care to stay cool.
Double-Coated Breeds: Breeds like Huskies and Golden Retrievers have double coats that can make them more susceptible to heat. Special grooming and cooling strategies are needed to keep these dogs comfortable.
Customizing Cooling Strategies
Size and Age Factors: Puppies, senior dogs, and smaller breeds can be more sensitive to heat. Tailoring your cooling strategies to your dog's specific needs is essential for their well-being.
Health Condition Considerations: Dogs with health issues such as obesity, heart disease, or respiratory problems are at higher risk for heat stress. Always consult with your vet to develop a safe summer plan for your dog.
Safety Tips for Outdoor Activities
Safe Car Rides
Never leave your dog in a hot car. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, even for a short period.
Using car sun shades and cooling pads. Sun shades and cooling pads can help keep the car cooler during trips. Make sure your dog has access to water and plenty of ventilation.
Protecting Paws from Hot Surfaces
Signs of Paw Burn: Hot pavement can burn your dog's paws. Signs of paw burn include limping, licking or chewing at the feet, and visible blisters or redness.
Using Booties and Paw Wax: Protect your dog's paws with booties or paw wax. These products create a barrier between their feet and hot surfaces, reducing the risk of burns.
Recognizing and Responding to Heatstroke
Symptoms of Heatstroke in Dogs
Early Warning Signs: Early signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, and restlessness. Being aware of these symptoms can help you take action before the condition becomes severe.
Severe Symptoms: Severe heatstroke symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and collapse. Immediate veterinary attention is required if your dog exhibits these signs.
Immediate Actions to Take
Cooling Techniques: If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area immediately. Use cool (not cold) water to wet them down and offer small amounts of water to drink.
Seeking Veterinary Care: Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Even if your dog seems to recover after cooling down, it’s crucial to seek veterinary care to ensure there are no lasting effects.
Conclusion
Keeping your dog cool in summer involves a combination of hydration, creating a cool environment, using cooling products, and timing activities wisely. Regular grooming and offering frozen treats can also help your dog stay comfortable.
Understanding how to keep dogs cool in summer is essential for their health and happiness. By implementing these strategies, you can ensure your furry friend enjoys the season safely. Remember, a cool dog is a happy dog!

Swamp cooler service
Comprehensive Swamp Cooler Services: Installation, Maintenance, Repair, and Replacement
Swamp coolers, also known as evaporative coolers, offer an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional air conditioning systems. Particularly suited for dry climates, these coolers can significantly lower indoor temperatures while consuming less electricity. To keep your swamp cooler running efficiently, it’s crucial to invest in professional services, including installation, maintenance, repair, and eventual replacement.
In this guide, we’ll cover the key aspects of swamp cooler services, from installation to maintenance and repair, so you can get the most out of your cooling system.
Swamp Cooler Installation: Setting the Stage for Comfort
Proper installation is the first step to ensuring that your swamp cooler functions effectively. A professionally installed swamp cooler will provide consistent cooling, lower energy costs, and increase the overall comfort of your home or office.
Location is Key: The placement of your swamp cooler is essential for optimal performance. The system needs to be installed in a location where it can pull in dry, outside air to effectively cool your indoor space.
Ductwork Considerations: Swamp cooler installation also involves ensuring that the ductwork is properly designed to distribute cool air evenly throughout the building. Incorrect ductwork can result in uneven cooling or poor airflow.
Sizing the Cooler: Choosing the right size for your space is another crucial aspect. A swamp cooler that’s too small won’t cool the area effectively, while one that’s too large will consume unnecessary energy.
Professional Expertise: A licensed technician will handle the installation to ensure your swamp cooler operates at its best right from the start. With expert installation, you can expect fewer issues down the line and a longer-lasting system.
Swamp Cooler Maintenance: Keeping It Running Smoothly
Regular swamp cooler maintenance is essential to ensure the system operates at peak efficiency and lasts for many years. Without proper care, even the best coolers can face problems such as reduced cooling power, water leaks, or clogged filters.
Seasonal Tune-ups: Ideally, swamp coolers should undergo maintenance before and after the cooling season. This involves inspecting various components such as the fan, water pump, and motor, as well as cleaning or replacing pads and filters.
Water System Check: The water distribution system is a crucial component of swamp coolers. Maintenance includes ensuring that water flows properly to the pads, avoiding mineral build-up or blockages that can reduce the cooler’s efficiency.
Pad Replacement: The cooling pads inside the swamp cooler can become clogged with dust and debris over time, reducing their effectiveness. Regularly replacing these pads helps maintain optimal airflow and cooling performance.
Electrical Inspection: A routine check of the electrical components ensures the swamp cooler is operating safely and efficiently. This reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns during peak cooling seasons.
Winterization: In colder climates, it’s important to winterize your swamp cooler at the end of the season. This process involves draining the water, covering the unit, and ensuring all parts are protected from freezing conditions.
By scheduling regular maintenance, you can prolong the life of your swamp cooler and avoid costly repairs.
Swamp Cooler Repair: Addressing Issues Promptly
Even with regular maintenance, swamp coolers can experience problems that require professional repair. Common issues include poor airflow, strange noises, water leaks, and inconsistent cooling. When you notice any of these problems, it’s essential to act quickly to prevent further damage.
Water Leaks: Leaks are a common issue with swamp coolers and can be caused by cracks in the water tray, loose connections, or problems with the water pump. A technician will quickly diagnose and fix the issue to prevent water damage to your property.
Strange Noises: Unusual noises like grinding or rattling may indicate a problem with the fan or motor. Addressing these noises early can prevent more serious issues from developing.
Inconsistent Cooling: If your swamp cooler is not providing the cooling power it once did, it may be due to clogged pads, low water levels, or a malfunctioning pump. A repair service can troubleshoot and restore your cooler’s performance.
Fan or Motor Malfunction: The fan and motor are critical components of the swamp cooler. If either of these parts fail, it can lead to poor cooling or even a complete system shutdown. Expert repair services can replace or fix these components, ensuring your cooler operates efficiently again.
Swamp Cooler Replacement: When It’s Time for an Upgrade
Swamp coolers, like all appliances, eventually reach the end of their lifespan. If your unit is constantly breaking down or has become inefficient, it may be time to consider a replacement.
Frequent Repairs: If you find yourself scheduling frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire unit. Constant breakdowns are a sign that the cooler is no longer functioning as it should.
Energy Efficiency: Older swamp coolers tend to be less energy-efficient compared to newer models. Upgrading to a modern system can lower your energy bills and provide better cooling performance.
Technological Advancements: Newer models offer improved features like digital controls, variable speeds, and more efficient water usage. Replacing your old swamp cooler with an updated model can enhance comfort and efficiency.
Cost Considerations: While a new swamp cooler is an investment, the long-term savings in energy costs and reduced repair bills make it a worthwhile upgrade for many homeowners.
