Learning how to have friends as an autistic adult

Growing up, I wasn’t very popular. People knew who I was, but not a lot of people actually got to know who I was, and I never kept a friend for very long. And as I grew, I found myself being pushed to the borders of cliques, unable to figure out why I felt so different to the people I was around. I felt like an alien. So, I tended to choose isolation over standing in the background. It was a lonely life, but to me, a life filled with books instead of people was better than being surrounded by people I felt didn’t understand me. I convinced myself that I was an introvert, that I didn’t need those people. Poor kid.

When I realized I was autistic, one of the first things that clicked in my head was the fact that I am actually incredibly extroverted. I love being around (certain) people. So, I downloaded Bumble. 

Bumble has given me the opportunity to weed out the absolute no’s--the bigots, the willfully ignorant, the radically religious--and instead allow me to interact with genuine people with similar interests to me. I swear this isn’t me intentionally plugging Bumble, but it really has saved my little social life.

I prefer being with a small group of people over a large group. I enjoy having deep personal conversations with people that I love and trust.
