i love it when characters are unfair, actually. i love it when they’re uncouth and cranky and hypocritical, i love it when they have cognitive dissonances, i love it when they make good and bad choices for the wrong reasons. i love when they’re short to anger and hard to understand. i love it when they’ve destroyed themselves for nothing but can’t even see either part of it yet. i love it when they’re messy and selfish and bad at communicating. i love it when they get convinced of their own ego and stuck in a feedback loop regarding their own warped paranoia. i love it when characters actively make their lives unknowingly harder for themselves. i love it when characters don’t know they’re in a story. i love it when characters are like real people

I think Terry is such an interesting character for the way he shows us how easily good morals can be evil without being compromised and the distinction between evil and cruelty.
He has very clear moral lines and sticks to them throughout the show. His belief is always that one must do everything to help those they care about. While many of us might object to the way these morals play out for him, specifically with being willing to use dark magic as an elf and being willing to kill Ibis (even if he feels horrible about it), the fact of the matter is those aren't moral lines very different from much of our main cast (especially Callum). And this is so important for setting up many of the hard choices the main characters will have to face in the next few seasons by showing us someone who can be so kind and loving and help plants grow can also be violent and dangerous without questioning the morality of their choices.
And it is also interesting because of what it means when he calls Claudia out for being cruel in taunting Rayla about the coins. Because Terry is an antagonist in the show, he manages to be "okay" with killing someone and yet he objects to Claudia taunting Rayla, a much more insignificant way of hurting someone. And that is because of Terry the question is not about if you are hurting someone but if you are helping someone else by doing so. Evil is when you hurt someone in order to achieve your aims. Cruelty is when you hurt someone for no reason.

"You wanna know why I'm really in therapy? It is because I have spent my entire life feeling like a constant disappointment. And you want to talk about our jobs? You think my job is dangerous? I have walked through fire every single day of my life because of you. That is why I'm in therapy. Because nothing I ever did was good enough."

I know this is a super unpopular opinion, especially in the ships I follow/write for, but I genuinely don’t think Steve/Nancy would be a back step in their character development and I absolutely don’t think the hints at it in s4 “came out of nowhere”
There’s nothing wrong with two people being bad for each other and then growing as people separately, and then being better fit for each other due to that growth they made on their own
S1 Steve was so concerned with appearances and his fathers approval that he never took the time to worry about other people, didn’t care to help nancy or worry about how she was handling barb
He grew from that, he acknowledged his bad actions and genuinely improved himself as a person. He’s no longer concerned about those appearances, only cares about keeping the party safe, and involves himself in Nancys plans immediately. He’s there for her, he wants to help, he puts faith in other people now
Nancy didn’t want to be stifled, she didn’t want to be put on the back burner or belittled and while s1 Jonathan was the support she was looking for, once they got together he was more concerned about his future and his opportunities, he disregarded her worries and ideas and theories and Nancy has learned to push herself forward even if it’s by herself (but we see that she’s way happier when people do support her, she’s just not afraid of them *not* supporting her anymore)
Genuinely I think their characters have grown in a way that makes them more compatible now than they were s1, and that’s not a bad thing
Do I obviously wish something else would happen ship-wise? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean their character development is ruined or their relationship “came out of nowhere”
