you don’t flinch. you don’t so much as blink. you stay still in spite of herself, in spite of the way your spine stands rigid and almost distrusting against the advent of the doctor’s touch. a cheek to a shoulder, but simply, she can’t understand how dangerous this is for you. on the other hand — you love her, and this always supersedes… everything. and then your defenses would love to drop, but they are what they are. you carelessly toss your phone aside to pin her under your attention, warm and russet and honest as your eyes are.

there are many things that claude does not partake in. two of them are favors and blind dates. yet here she is on a blind date as a favor owed to somebody. she thinks about the choices that have led to this scenario, and after a few minutes of retracing them, she realizes there would have been no other ending.

at least she is able to pick the time and place. an art museum, early in the morning before children run amok, still quiet and serene. there are a few people milling around, viewing the various works of art, but claude has her eye on the redhead peering at a painting.

it's a painting that claude knows, for a fact, is a fake. she helped to orchestrate the theft of the original.

"what do you think the artist meant to convey with this piece?" she smiles, lips painted red spreading into a friendly smile. for once, it isn't icy.

the cat peers over with laughing chestnut eyes, an eyebrow quirked in enigmatic posture. brows are dark, while platinum gold sits in falsely positioned curls upon her head. she watches the doctor with quiet intrigue from where she’s settled upon the couch, perched like a raven with a chamber door.

her movement is boneless, easy, serpentine. she shifts like water, flows limitlessly, gently molds the contours of her scarred palms with the sides of a pale throat. the kiss is soft, entirely honest, winds her arms around a neck before a nose touches hers in a silly little brush.

“ah, my wish is your command.”

"hey..." vanessa's head turned on a swivel as she sat on the edge of the patient bed, legs dangling over the side. impatience ran through her, feeling abandoned in her time of need. truthfully, she hadn't paid enough attention to the person who brought her into the emergency department. their voice was too high-pitched to take seriously, and vanessa was already predisposed to ignore any preachy-doctor types that crossed her path. "hello!?"

as she saw someone pass by, flames of red catching her eye, vanessa grabbed at the curtain and pulled, hollering in the woman's direction. "hey! you! yeah, ginger rogers," she called, picking on the person with distinguishable features she could point out. "yeah, hey, i'm sure you're busy," doctors always were. "but i've been waiting for someone to stitch me up for an eternity." vanessa nodded to the gauze on her forearm. "and i'd really like to get out of here soon before i get bored enough and remember that i have plenty of lawyers in my contacts that are well versed in medical malpractice suits, so..."

she shifts her feet almost like a sheepish child, eyes ducking down so that addison hopefully can’t see the blush that meredith can feel stinging her cheeks. addison’s always had that affect on her, calm cool and collected addison, with her bright red hair and gorgeous eyes and - well. it’s no wonder derek fell for her like he did. is there anyone who doesn’t immediately feel intimidated by the redhead beauty?

"yeah, we . . . take turns who gets the coffee, and it was my turn and i was expecting him and had he told me that you were going to be, i would have at least asked what you take instead." is it embarrassing to admit that she's got his order memorized, or more embarrassing to think about how she'd probably learn addison's, if these walks with her and doc become more frequent? not sure that's something she really wants to think about, especially not with the woman beside her. she probably has the nose of a bloodhound, and would be able to smell the blood rushing to her neck and face, even if she's probably too kind to actually say anything about it.

or maybe addison wouldn't even care, and somehow that makes it worse.

"so . . . should i ask what yours is, for next time?" and yet, foot meet mouth.

there's an indescribable warmth that bubbles in her chest, a warmth that embarrasses herself because in that precise moment, she remembers the lack of affection between her and her husband. when was the last time derek brought her coffee? she can't even remember. however, if the rosy complexion on her cheeks is ever brought into question, addison officially decided on blaming it on the moderately chilly seattle breeze blowing against her skin. " wow uhm ... thanks. you uh... you didn't have to. but uhm, thank you ... meredith. " instinctively, she reaches for the coffee cup and her mind couldn't help but to wander as she watches the heartwarming reunion between meredith and doc —— she's sweet. she's sincere. she's kind ... what's there not to like?

" ... oh ! " words addressed to her takes her out of her trance. the realization she had been smiling — genuinely smiling — hits her. addison dare not spare that another thought so she takes a sip of the coffee in her hand. " yeah, cream and sugar's fine — it's derek's usual coffee order but i'm okay with it. "
