Post Christmas Post number 1 (stitch 443)
As I have done in the past, I decided to make something to go with the gift I was giving as part of my office’s Pollyanna/Secret Santa/gift exchange. I has some Yarnspirations Caron Cloud Cake in the color Warm Sky. It is a very soft polyester yarn in the colors of pink, orange, purple and blue. This yarn used a 4.5 mm (size 7) hook. Here is how I made it: Ch 37 Row 1: SC in 2nd chain from…

might do something a little crazy with this vest where instead of working it in front and back panels... i crochet the bottom in one piece and then add the decreasing top portions afterwards
#it's going to be a button up vest. not sure if i want to do a slst ribbing or a fpdc/bpdc ribbing#slst would take sooo much more time and idk if i like the look as much but it might be easier to add buttonholes to#i do just really like post stitches admittedly#they look good and they're fun to work#but for fpdc/bpdc i would have to get very specifically sized buttons to fit between them

Crochet beanie is underway! I couldn't find a pattern for the exact beanie construction I wanted with the ribbing technique I wanted so I'm writing my own lol I'll share it once I have the pattern (and the beanie) finished
So the first two memory bears are finished and delivered to their person and I am left bearless, having discovered the fun of the puzzle of putting together a bear from baby clothes and with no baby clothes to make a bear out of
What should I make next? I mean, my next crochet project is a beanie for an art trade (I am excited) but what should I sew next?
#the person behind the yarn#this might be an unpopular crochet opinion#but I strongly prefer using fpdc/bpdc (or fphdc/bphdc) ribbing instead of the like blo ribbing worked horizontally#and then you join it and crochet along the long edge#I dislike doing that kind of ribbing so much#and like sooooo many brim up beanies use that technique#so I mostly crochet beanies top down#but that doesn't work for this style of beanie#or like. it probably could? but it would take more effort and not look as good#so instead: I am writing my own pattern

"Sorry, Elias, I can't hear you. There's a door in the way."

Character Name: Martin Blackwood
Fandom: The Magnus Archives [Podcast]
Voiced By: Alexander J. Newall (@rqbossman)
Yarn Used: Shoes: CraftSmart Value - Dark Almond Trousers: CraftSmart Value - Coffee Jumper: CraftSmart Value - Cornflower Skin: CraftSmart Value - Peach Hair: CraftSmart Value - Clay Ombre Glasses: Ashland Floral Wire - 22 Gauge/Iron/Silver
Basic pattern here.

Martin. My boy Martin. First character I put on this list before it was an actual list. (Why didn’t I do him first? Look…by the time I realized I had to actually do this, other podcasts were still ongoing and characters actively needed hugs.) It has been a long time since I have identified with a character so hard, and I love him so much. I couldn’t wait to get to hug him.
He differs from the base pattern as follows:
Shoes: I gave Martin loafers, or at least that was what I meant to give him. Therefore, I stopped with the shoe color at R6 (the final decrease) and switched to trouser color. I also knotted a small scrap of brown yarn on the tips and tied them in bows.
Trousers: So here’s the thing: Martin is fat. I know there are people who want to argue that the podcast never explicitly says the word “fat” - just things like “a bigger guy” and “roomy” and the like - and that that could mean he’s just tall or broad or muscular or whatever, but for fuck’s sake, there aren’t that many fat characters out there that aren’t punch lines, let me have this. Anyway, I am also fat, so I admittedly based a lot of my alterations on, well, me. And the first thing I decided was that Martin, like me, has trouble finding pants off the rack that fit him properly because everything that fits his waist has too long of an inseam, so I decided to give him cuffs on his pants by doing R7 as hdc in front loops of R6 only, then R8 as dc in the back loops of R6. I then continued as normal up through R17 and: R18: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st] 5 times around, sl st in first sc (20 sc). R19: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (20 sc). R20: Ch 1, [sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st] 4 times around, sl st in first sc (24 sc). R21-29: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (24 sc). After completing second leg, sl st to middle of inseam. Ch 4 and join to middle of inseam of opposite leg. R30: Ch 1, [sc in each st around leg, sc in each ch across] 2 times, sl st in first sc (56 sc). R31-32: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (56 sc). R33: Ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, [sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st] 2 times, sc in next 32 st, [2sc in next st, sc in next 3 st] 3 times, 2sc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in first sc (62 sc). R34: Ch 1, [2sc in next st, sc in next 2 st] 4 times, 2sc in next st, sc in next 32 st, [2sc in next st, sc in next 2 st] 5 times, sc in next 2 st, sl st in first sc (72 sc). R35: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (72 sc).
Jumper: Let the record show that I bought this yarn specifically because it was the exact color I always had in mind in leaves when I referenced “the jumper Jon once offhandedly complimented him on”. I did it the same way I did Joseph’s hoodie, fpdc around each st in R34 and then continuing in sc, but I also decided to make his stomach a bit bigger as I went. Beginning with R39: R39: Ch 1, [sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 32 st, [2sc in next st, sc in next 5 st] 3 times, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 st, sl st in first sc (79 sc). R40: Ch 1, 2sc in first st, sc in next 78 st, sl st in first sc (80 sc). R41-42: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (80 sc). R43: Ch 1, sc in first 2 st, inv dec, [sc in next 4 st, inv dec] 3 times, sc in next 32 st, [inv dec, sc in next 4 st] 4 times, inv dec, sc in next 2 st, sl st in first sc (72 sc). R44-45: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (72 sc). R46: Ch 1, [sc in first 4 st, inv dec] 12 times, sl st in first sc (60 sc). R47-48: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st (60 sc). R49: Ch 1, [sc in first 3 st, inv dec] 12 times, sl st in first sc (48 sc). R50-57: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (48 sc). R58: Ch 1, inv dec around, sl st in first st (24 sc). R59: Switch to skin color. Ch 1, sc in back loop of each st around, sl st in first st (24 sc). R60: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (24 sc).

Head: I decided Martin has no neck really, but a slightly square head/jaw. (It came out a bit chinless, honestly, but it works for him.) So the pattern went as follows: R61: Ch 1, [sc in front loop of first 3 st, 2sc in front loop of next st] 6 times around, sl st in first sc (30 sc). R62: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (30 sc). R63: Ch 1, [sc in first 4 st, 2sc in next st] 6 times around, sl st in first sc (36 sc). R64: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st in first sc (36 sc). R65-R82: Continue as in base pattern. I also gave him ears like I did Alice. For hair, I did the loop method again, just…significantly shorter, so I had to do more of it. (Which was fine, really, it kept me occupied on a long car ride…)
Glasses: I didn’t wrap these in thread this time, but I did cut the wire long enough that I could double it up the whole way across, so it works well, I think.
Arms: Like with the legs, I decided to make Martin’s arms fatter than usual, so at R12 I chained 2 and then did a pattern of (hdc, 2hdc) around to open it up to eighteen stitches from twelve. I also extended them to 33 rounds to fit better with his body.

Made Sean a new hat. Here you go:
I-Hook, approx. 200 yards Worsted Weight Yarn (Berroco Talara used). We're making a ribbed hat that will have some stretch. It'll buckle a little at the beginning, but trust the process.
Round 1: Make a magic ring. Work a chain 3 in magic ring. This counts as your first double crochet (DC). Mark this as your first stitch in every round. Work 9 more DC into ring. Do not join. We are working in a spiral with the same starting stitch in every round.
Round 2: Complete 2 front post double crochet (FPDC) around the chain 3.
Round 3: Complete 2 FPDC around other 9 DC around (20 stitches total).
Round 4: Complete 2 FPDC around every FPDC of previous round (40 stitches total).
Round 5: Complete 2 FPDC around every FPDC of previous rounds (80 stitches).
Round 6: *FPDC in the first stitch. DC in second stitch. Repeat from * around. You will have 80 stitches. 40 will be FPDC. 40 will be plain double crochet.
Round 7-31: Continue working a FPDC in all odd stitches and a plain DC in all even stitches until you have completed 25 rows in this pattern. At the end of pattern round 25, join the last DC to the FPDC that started the round with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Note: You can always add or remove rows for a preferred fit.

A few FO for December
Since I've mostly been working through holiday gifts and Christmas doily commissions, it's been a little light on this blog lately. I apologize for that. All I can say is the time gets away from me sometimes.
But! I *think* all of the planned gifts are completed (unless something inspires me last minute) and finally all the commissions are done. Here's a sneak peek of some of my work when it was blocking:
The top is a crochet moss stitch Christmas cowl - I alternated red and green in a wool/silk blend called Symfonie Luna. It's for me, and incredibly soft. The center is the last of the poinsettia doilies - ended up making three this year. It's a pretty fun and quick all things considered. 20 rows total with a pineapple design, and the most difficult thing would be the fpdc's or the picots. The bottom are a pair of fingerless mitts knitted. It's got some funky mistakes in it, and I still haven't really figured out the right way to do the thumb. This pair will be for my husband, which is why I chose the dark blues and greys for his colorway. I made two other sets of these in different colorways for my mom and MIL as well, so the mitts are the gift of the year, it seems. I've used them as a tool for practicing my knitting, and for that they were wonderful.
Here's a close up of the stitching for the cowl:
And finally - I finished my second knit sock, using just the pattern and without the class to aid me. I'm impressed by how much I remembered. I also ended up having to start the toe decreases a second time because I made the sock too short, probably just a laziness on my part when it came to measuring. I'm not mad about it though; I really enjoy the decrease section, so I just got to do it again!
As for what's next? I have two more doily commissions that do NOT need to be finished by Christmas, so I might start on those. I have my third sock on the DPNS, and my sky blanket is continuing right along. But I'd also like to dive into some of this stash soon, so I'll admit to having started the thorough ravelry search for some of the colorways I have on hand. :)

Me five minutes ago: ugh I’m so bored of double crochets, I wish I was done with this row already so I can do fpdc :(
Me now: fpdc is the Bane of My Existence and if I have to do one more I will Die (I’ve done four)
(Fpdc is the abbreviation for front post double crochet)

Chair pads/mandalas! Pattern by Lilly Bjorn on Ravelry (brioche crochet masterclass is the pattern name: comes with another smaller pattern I believe).
I LOVE these. I made them several years ago and would happily make another few. They’re worked in FPDCs, with colors in alternating rows.

ok working crochet without turning your work physically but instead switching hands is supposed to be not necessarily easier but just like a benefit in some cases esp with stitches like fpdc where when you turn your work it becomes bpdc which is a bit harder to do so if you're working in the front alone it's all fpdc right so yeah i have discovered one downside stitch to crochet w/o turning it's the blo ribbed stitches you then have to alternate blo flo each row to get it to work out

Ok I was recommended this pattern to look at and see if I could work something out with this.
Right off the bat I'm seeing a problem [other than that frame around each round which would have to be removed somehow, likely replacing sc with ch and then stitching directly into 2 rows below like the original blanket pattern I'm trying to figure out].

Each corner has one more unworked stitch, and if this pattern is followed beyond the original square's pattern, that's going to keep expanding. That's not going to work for this visual effect any better than those frames of sc do.
Those frames could be hidden a bit by either replacing sc with ch, or by fbdc through the lower dc only, but working something that's primarily fpdc like that would have a lot of texture which the original blanket is meant to avoid texture and rely on the gradients of the yarn for visual interest, so that would look ok, but not be what I'm trying to make.
It also would mess up the gradient to have a line of 3dc up the center of each wedge with all the other clusters being 2dc, though no more so than having the corners does.
