Good morning 👋. It is obvious that I implemented selective coloring using #Gimp in this #photo of a #TrueCattleheart #butterfly (Parides arcas) The #wings themselves are black so the selective coloring did not affect them 😉. The red marking also remained the same 😝. The photo itself is a simple image. The most challenging aspect of the photo was gathering enought #light for the sensor, since this photo was taken indoors at #FairchildTropicalBotanicGarden (#FTBG ) 😰. Collin and I shook hands like men and settled our differences and on good terms again.

As for some random aussie farmer giving FL her social media handle that is just more out of context stuff. It was in 2010 and we used to buy 20-30kg of bananas a week from him when he was at Byron or Mullumbimby markets and this cringe creepy farmer dude was always like ‘hey banana girl is back! you should be the face of my market stall!’. One time she said ‘did you say to him to call me that??’ because I had always urged FL to put some fruit in her social media handle because we were promoting such high fruit consumption, it made sense and it made it easier for people to remember out names. She disagreed though and thought ‘Freelee the banana girl’ sounded corny and that her haters would mock her too much. It took her till mid 2012 before she had the confidence to consistently use the name FTBG. 

Good to see FL use all the things I taught her from day one 10 years later though even if she gives me zero credit and tries to make my life living hell each day behind the scenes.

STEM: Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

I have been taking a local flora class offered by Florida International University (FIU) which is located at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (FTBG)  so that I can one day qualify and sit for the patent bar exam.  I am a firm believer in knowledge is power.  One of my first class sessions I noticed walking around the property with my classmates a sign promoting a NASA project. 

NASA gave FTBG $1.24 million dollar grant.  The project targets underrepresented minorities interested in space exploration and botanical research.  

The mission: to identify edible plants that can be cultivated in space.

Rapid population growth and the recognition that space on Earth is limited has fascinated scientists for decades. The entertainment industry has repeatedly played with our fear of the unknown.  

Scientists go out of their way to mitigate and eliminate our fear and are now teaching younger generations to propagate plants and contribute to research which will be decisive in determining the plants that will and can be grown in space at FTBG.  To communicate and go beyond the generational gap, FTBG and NASA, decided to incorporate social media to effectively communicate with younger generations.

Schools were asked to tweet scientifically relevant tweets. 35 classrooms were snapped to see if research protocols were being followed.  Middle and high school students in South Florida were able to replicate results that were consistent with the results taking place in space. If you want to reach middle and high school audiences, NASA and FTBG identified Twitter as the social media network most effective.

The bottom line: organizations wishing to target and inspire middle and high school students need to have a presence on Twitter and generate content of interest for them.  Our future depends on our ability to inspire and motivate younger generations.
