I imagine them having a weird story where Mario is a defective robot with a glitch in his system that makes him sentient, and Puzzles is trying to keep him secret. And then they fall in love, and Puzzles is just accepting of his robo-husband and defends him no matter how weird he is.

Also, imagine in Puzzles bought Mario to be a prop in his shows and suddenly this robot becomes his first friend and love? Or if he found Mario in a junk yard and fixed him up (let’s be real, Puzzles gotta know quite a bit about tech if he wanted to own an entire fucking theme park and was able to turn himself into a machine). Especially since Puzzles is 100% broke and alone in every universe /hj

ALNST: Human Production Loredump

Very long, lore heavy post

Okay so not sure if this has been done before but, this is basically a compilation of everything that we know on how pet-humans are produced/sold plus my own analysis.

We know for a fact that there are three main ways humans are sourced in the ALNST universe:

Human modification centers/Human editing shops 

Foster homes/Family sales 

Auction houses 

+ Illegal factories 

(*not sure what the exact terminologies are exactly cause they seem vary according to translators but eh)

1. Human modification centers/Human editing shops

Examples: Till, Mizi, Sua

So first we have human modification centers, which do seem to be where the segyein typically adopt (read: buy) their pet-humans. The aliens who source their pets from these facilities also seem to come from all classes (e.g. Urak - businessman, Nigeh - influencer, Shine - ???) so I’m guessing modification centers are your typical commercial pet shop. 

We see baby Till being sold at a 50% discount so we do know they are sold pretty young, and that prices are probably based on whatever characteristics that the aliens deem favorable. But what I find interesting is the fact that these centers are called human modification centers (or editing shops in some translations), which hints that these kids do go under some form of modification before being sold. It’s most likely behavioral, kind of like a puppy training center, but I’m wondering if it could possibly include visual and genetic modifications too. 

I mean Mizi’s hair is pink even as a child ffs. You can’t tell me that’s normal.

We also know that Till was being cared for by his mom for a little while before he was separated due to the potential he demonstrated as a singer, which makes me think that most the kids that end up in modification centers are basically either A) produced in an in-house factory for that specific center or B) produced in an off site factory on a contract basis before being shipped off modification centers once they’re old enough.

Considering Io has a notch in her ear, which just gives me a heck ton of livestock vibes, and this specific image we got from Till’s comic I’m leaning more towards Option B. Baby Till also looks like he’s being shipped off in a giant crate which I’m guessing is a shipment to the modification center where he eventually meets Ivan. 

The providers look like they’re kept in tiny cages, and the whole vibe of the factories is giving puppy mill/commercial mass production. The fact that there are human mothers at all suggests that most factories that supply the products to the modification centers probably produce their products the old fashion way, with not much cloning/growing-artificially-in-alien-pods involved (probably to keep production costs low).

2. Foster homes/Family sales 

Examples: Hyuna & Hyunwoo 

Okay so there is almost no info on foster homes at all, but we do know that their main selling point seems to be the fact that they produce actual biological siblings that can be bought together in sets, which seems to be a novelty amongst the aliens (e.g. Sua and her ‘sisters’). They remind me a ton of amature dog/cat breeders – the sort that produce specific, fancy breeds and sell litters straight out of their backyards rather than go through pet stores. 

We know extremely little about the conditions in foster homes, but I’m guessing products are also produced the traditional route, but this is wholly speculation and being artificially grown in tubes seems just as likely (assuming the aliens running these things have access to such technology anyway). Either way, the conditions are probably slightly better than factories. Considering Phan (who is canonically some kind of alien aristocrat) ended up buying Hyuna and Hyunwoo, I’m guessing products produced in foster homes are most likely sold directly to middle and upper-class segyein, or possibly produced on a by-order basis. 

3. Auction houses 

Examples: Luka, Ivan (technically)

Right, so we’ve established that Luka is basically a human version of an inbred pug, having a bunch of traits that the aliens have deemed desirable at the cost of his health. The official art also lists his birthplace as an auction house, which suggests that these facilities have to be capable of producing humans at some capacity rather than just being a place where all the high quality pets with favorable genetics are sold. 

I’m guessing they’re sort of an extremely exclusive, overpriced version of foster homes that cater to the upper classes. The products they produced are probably the highest quality money can buy (think competition grade racehorses with ridiculously long pedigrees), and are sold to the highest bidder.

We don’t really know where this particular scene in Wiege takes place, but chances are that it’s either in some facility owned by Heperu or the actual auction house where Luka was born/created. We also don’t technically know for sure yet if Luka is actually a clone, or if he just happens to be the progenitor of the clones he accidentally murdered, but either way I’m guessing that products produced at auction houses would most likely be produced and grown artificially to ensure optimum genetics. Considering they cater to the upper class I wouldn’t put it pass them to offer exclusive services like cloning to their clients. 

Auction houses do seem to also function as a place where illegal products are sold. We still don’t really know how Ivan ended up being auctioned off, considering we saw him with Till in the modification center when he was younger (I’m suspecting Unsha might not actually be his first or even second owner, and that he was first illegally sold to the modification center, bought and then resold at an auction), but this particular shot of him is definitely giving underground, black market auction.

My theory is that the auction houses are either split between legal auction houses (like the ones that made Luka) and illegal caution houses (the one Ivan ended up in) or more likely that they have both legal and illegal sessions exclusive to the wealthy.

4. Illegal factories 

Examples: Ivan 

So Ivan’s birthplace is listed as the slums, and we do know that he was produced illegally. How is pretty vague, but the implication is that they are illegal human factories up and running in the shadier parts of town. Ivan doesn’t seem to know his birthday either, which probably means his documentation is shady af. We don’t know exactly if pet-humans have to be registered, but seeing that illegal humans are a thing, they probably have to be and Ivan was not. 

Considering we got this from his album cover, I think it’s safe to say that conditions are the worst out of all the places to possibly be born in the ALNST universe (rip Ivan, you deserved so much better). I’m assuming it’s supposed to reflect illegal puppy mills, where costs are kept as low as possible and the only goal is profit (I don’t even wanna picture the horror Ivan’s provider probably went through). Though it ended up being a trademark of his, I’m also thinking his snaggletooth might have originally been some sort of production defect that the aliens just never bothered fixing, considering he was technically supposed to be a low-quality product. 

Building on that, I’m guessing the main clients of these illegal factors are modification centers (similarly to how some pet shops would unethically source their animals), but considering some translations list Urak and Unsha as shady businessman I’m thinking illegal human trade is probably pretty rampant too, and some of their products are sold directly to lower-class segyein for cheaper prices. 

5. Bonus: Strays 

Not the actual term for the rebels but that’s what the rebels/humans without owners essentially are in this universe – strays. We see a bunch of kids in the rebel base in Wiege, which makes me wonder if they are kids that the rebels freed from captivity/picked up randomly during missions (case in point Dewey), or if they happen to be the children of the stray humans. 

Which brings me to the headcanon that there are some humans in this universe that have been free for generations. It’s a nice thought to have at least, that despite how humans as a species has been twisted to the point that love is but a vague concept there are still some traces of humanity that made it out of segyein oppression in this universe.

Hello, folks. This is your Oldie Chinese Diaspora Anon™️. I am starting to feel like I sound like bad news bears, so I would like to make my stance clear here. I have nothing against blind box dolls – heaven knows, I have a couple of them, too. It’s just unfortunate that I keep on encountering troubling news when it comes to blind box dolls, it seems. Please bear with me, would you?

Now, I need to introduce you to an... old friend. While we all know the resin recaster and his myriad of companies, I think I have brought up the vinyl recaster, DBS, a few times before as well. As a refresher, DBS is a toy company that specializes in vinyl and ABS toys. They bill themselves as the creators of “proudly MiC” toys for the next generation. However, their dolls have been found to be “recasted” from resin into vinyl and they have been plagiarising from several different companies, from Koreans to down-home Chinese. The MäyTrëë line of blind boxes were rejected by the BJD community because while the original designer was independent, the dolls were made by one of the DBS companies and was thought to be one of their subsidiaries. With that as a preamble, let me introduce you to the “Inedible Rabbits” dolls (Well, these ones: https://www.kikagoods.com/products/moon-jumping-time-bunny-series-1-12-action-figure-bjd-blind-box?variant=44766128931050 ). Similar to the “Escape Plan” dolls, they were created by a team of newbies who first 3D-printed their designs and pitched them to what’s akin to a Chinese-version of a Kickstarter called Modian. During the crowdfunding period, people can pre-order these dolls while the team running the KS maintain regular updates, chase goals, changes to the designs, etc. The final production is usually outsourced to a factory. The team is, in theory, working with the team all the way until delivery. I still vaguely remember someone asking “why aren’t there KS campaigns for dolls?” Well, you’re about to find out why… it wasn’t the price or the long production time, There’s a lot more to it.

As with the “Escape Plan” team, there’s a gap between the final products when compared to the samples (https://the-bjd-community-confess.tumblr.com/post/756541155738615808/一万次出逃计划开箱-避雷快跑哔哩哔哩bilibili ). One of the problems that was encountered by the buyers from the Escape Plan Team was that they have gone AWOL when people started to receive their dolls and started complaining. With the Inedible Rabbit Team however, my sources reported worse issues with communication. The creative team was not only unresponsive most of the time but they would block anyone who even asked benign questions. We also found out that the creative team behind the Inedible Rabbits did not apply to become a company prior to establishing their KS. It means that all of the transactions are considered personal (think F&F). With their frequent and wilful blocking of people, there are a lot of donors who are worried about how shady their behaviour is.

This was discovered from a video that the Inedible Rabbit Team posted on their social media showing the interior of their outsourced factory that made clothes for them. She is afraid that if too much of the funds get pulled out, the creative team may just pack up and do a rug pull with the money. Thanks to the fact that they never registered as a company, if they run, there’s basically no way to get that money back.

I do not want to be seen as someone who stands in others’ way of having a good time and earning money. But I also cannot stay quiet when I know that blind box dolls are a lot of new collectors’ gateway into resin BJD. This is akin to me knowing that something is a recast but fail to warn the new comers ahead of time. If anyone gets looked down upon or rejected from a group due to association with a doll that uses DBS clothes, I don’t think I can quite live with myself. So… thank you very much for lending your ears to me once more. I know full well that I do not have the ability to change anyone’s mind, but at least I can sleep better knowing that I have tried my best to tell you what I know.

me: 1, apple: 0 (PSA to anyone else who hates the IOS 18 update/photos app update- there IS a way to revert it)

PSA to anyone else who fucking hates the AWFUL new ios 18 apple photos app UI: I managed to revert my phone back to EXACTLY how it was prior to the update WITHOUT losing any of my stuff (I had been running IOS 17.7.2 prior to the update). Here's what I did:

1.) I had an iCloud backup from BEFORE updating to 18.1.1. This backup was from when my phone was still on 17.7.2. You can still undo the update without a backup, but you'll lose all your stuff/your phone will be wiped. 2.) I went here and picked my phone type (iphone 13 pro in my case) and then downloaded the most recent ios BETA version (17.6 ver 3 beta)- it has to be one of those beta versions, because apple keeps their beta versions signed longer than other versions, and there are no longer any versions of IOS prior to IOS 18 that are still signed. You can't install unsigned versions via itunes, so they're useless. 3.) I downloaded the 17.6 ver 3 beta file to my computer 4.) I opened iTunes with my phone connected 5.) I right-clicked on "Restore iPhone..." button, and selected that 17.6 ver 3 beta file from my "downloads" folder 6.) I let it restore/factory reset my phone & it downloaded IOS 17.6 ver 3 beta to my phone because I selected that file in step 5.) 7.) It finished resetting it and then I SET IT UP AS A NEW IPHONE and i did NOT click the "partial setup," button because THAT button took me to a screen where they were going to force me to update to 18.1.1 AGAIN 8.) After setting it up as a new, blank phone, running on the IOS 17.6 ver 3 beta, I went into my iPhone settings, went to the software updates section, and updated to 17.7.2 (it gave me the option to update to 17.7.2 instead of 18.1.1- this is where the little loophole is, because the 17.7.2 file is no longer available for download online/is no longer signed, but you CAN still update from 17.6 to 17.7.2 from within your iphone settings) 9.) I updated it to 17.7.2. This would be your final step if you don't have an IOS 17.7.2 or earlier iTunes or iCloud backup to restore from. 10.) You can only restore from an iCloud backup during the setup process- so, I factory reset my phone AGAIN, but from within my phone settings this time (instead of using iTunes like I did when factory resetting & installing that IOS 17.6 version) 11.) During THIS setup process, I didn't click on the "partial setup," option, and then just clicked on the iCloud backup option after declining the "partial setup" option, and it restored from my 17.7.2 iCloud backup without forcing me to update to 18.1.1 12.) My phone was back to how it was right before the update! I then went and shut off all of apple's stupid "automatic update" features, made sure that it CANNOT update without me going out of my way to update it, because apple has LOST automatic update privileges with this vile, wretched IOS 18 photos app update. 13.) If you are going to do this, I recommend you do it as soon as possible, because even though the signed 17.6 beta was available, and even though I could update to 17.7.2 from within my phone's settings, there is NO guarantee how long this option will last, it could be gone tomorrow, it could be gone two days from now, it could be gone an hour from now.

14.) I suggest Apple stops letting their UI devs reach into my mind while I sleep & use my nightmares to design their UI, because I don't really think there's any other explanation for how that mess was perfectly catered to piss me off & make the photos app unusable for me.

Pebble the wearable back from a long death

I started working on Pebble in 2008 to create the product of my dreams. Smartwatches didn’t exist, so I set out to build one. I’m extraordinarily happy I was able to help bring Pebble to life, alongside the core team and community. The company behind it failed but millions of Pebbles in the world kept going, many of them still to this day.

I wear my Pebble every day. It's been great (and I'm astounded it’s lasted 10 years!), but the time has come for new hardware.

You’d imagine that smartwatches have evolved considerably since 2012. I've tried every single smart watch out there, but none do it for me. No one makes a smartwatch with the core set of features I want:

Always-on e-paper screen (it’s reflective rather than emissive. Sunlight readable. Glanceable. Not distracting to others like a bright wrist)

Long battery life (one less thing to charge. It’s annoying to need extra cables when traveling)

Simple and beautiful user experience around a core set of features I use regularly (telling time, notifications, music control, alarms, weather, calendar, sleep/step tracking)

Buttons! (to play/pause/skip music on my phone without looking at the screen)

Hackable (apparently you can’t even write your own watchfaces for Apple Watch? That is wild. There were >16k watchfaces on the Pebble appstore!)

Over the years, we’ve thought about making a new smartwatch. Manufacturing hardware for a product like Pebble is infinitely easier now than 10 years ago. There are plenty of capable factories and Bluetooth chips are cheaper, more powerful and energy efficient.

The challenge has always been, at its heart, software. It’s the beautifully designed, fun, quirky operating system (OS) that makes Pebble a Pebble.

Today’s big news - Google has open sourced PebbleOS!

PebbleOS took dozens of engineers working over 4 years to build, alongside our fantastic product and QA teams. Reproducing that for new hardware would take a long time. 

Instead, we took a more direct route - I asked friends at Google (which bought Fitbit, which had bought Pebble’s IP) if they could open source PebbleOS. They said yes! Over the last year, a team inside Google (including some amazing ex-Pebblers turned Googlers) has been working on this. And today is the day - the source code for PebbleOS is now available at github.com/google/pebble (see their blog post).

Thank you, Google and Rebble! I can't stress how thankful I am to Rebble and Google, in general and to a few Googlers specifically, for putting in tremendous effort over the last year to make this happen. You've helped keep the dream alive by making it possible for anyone to use, fork and improve PebbleOS. The Rebble team has also done a ton of work over the years to continue supporting Pebble software, appstore and community. Thank you!

In addition to PebbleOS, we’ve been supporting development of Cobble, an open source Pebble-compatible app for iOS (soon) and Android (works great today, it’s my daily driver).

We’re bringing Pebble back!

I had really, really, really hoped that someone else would come along and build a Pebble replacement. But no one has. So… a small team and I are diving back into the world of hardware to bring Pebble back!

This time round, we’re keeping things simple. Lessons were learned last time! I’m building a small, narrowly focused company to make these watches. I don’t envision raising money from investors, or hiring a big team. The emphasis is on sustainability. I want to keep making cool gadgets and keep Pebble going long into the future.

The new watch we’re building basically has the same specs and features as Pebble, though with some fun new stuff as well 😉 It runs open source PebbleOS, and it’s compatible with all Pebble apps and watchfaces. If you had a Pebble and loved it…this is the smartwatch for you.

I am once again recommending Master of Orion (1993).

It's thirty years old, it originally came on floppy discs, and it's really good. The interface is crisp. The ship design system is neat. The technology research system is not your standard tech tree. It has helpful hotkeys like "Indicate next world that has enemy fleet inbound". It has antifeatures like "not doing a Cinematic Camera Pan for several seconds". It has detail while avoiding micromanagement by giving you mostly high-level control, and automatic reassignment of overflow when something like factory construction fills up.

hello gamer. you claim to want "shorter games with worse graphics that are made by people who are paid more to do less". in front of you is itch dot io, which has a "pay what you want" feature,

that… feels like an unfair take?

I don't want the claim as stated, I strongly suspect it's something said because it's catchy more than it's accurate, and I want to dissect its relation to things I do want, like MOO1.

shorter games

No, I want games with less padding.

I want fewer cinematic camera pans, and fewer cutscenes, and less of the dev team showing off their fancy tech demo, and fewer animations in the interface because the interface should have sub-second response time, and less loading time because the game should be smaller, and less grinding unless you're an idle game in which case it should be automated, and I want more automation and macros for things that are a waste of my attention as well as my time. Give me autoresolve for battles with weak enemies. Give me minions that can be sent to do things for me. Give me "repeat until" orders. Give me a dialogue meta-option that says "I've played this before, give me the TL;DR". Give me speed-up and skip buttons.

itch.io games have some of these, but also have less gameplay.

worse graphics

I'm close to agreeing with this, but IMO it's less about the graphics themselves and more about the 50GB graphics package and rendering engine that contemporary games like to include for little to no gameplay improvement, and then that enables lazy devs to think "another 3GB isn't a problem when we're already past 50GB" and the game bloats to 150GB as each dev includes a whole-ass library for one function, and then there's 10GB updates to download repeatedly.

I don't know if this is literally what happened behind the scenes, but a recent game like Baldur's Gate 3 did hit 150GB. Which also brings me to,

people who are paid more

I want developer studios to fire the movie team and redistribute their salary to the rest of the devs, with movie team describing the Thing that 'graphics department' has grown into.

A game like Age of Mythology doing in-engine cutscenes was cool when the engine was primarily a game engine and hands had eight polygons; these days it seems like AAA games also want to be movies and that means turning the game engine into a movie-maker, and hiring an entire movie team to render the 3D model of each character's armpit hair and the physics of how it moves in the wind when the character raises his arm.

Since budget is limited, that movie team comes at the expense of every other aspect of the game, like gameplay, writing, bugtesting, et cetera, and it still won't be as good a movie as an actual movie.

Android is launching a new security feature that will force devices to reboot themselves if you haven’t unlocked them for a while, making it harder for other people to access the data inside. The feature included in the latest Google Play services update says that Android phones will automatically restart “if locked for 3 consecutive days,” requiring users to enter their passcode the next time they want to open the device. As 9to5Google notes, this update should apply to both Android phones and tablets, but will exclude other device categories like Auto, TV, and WearOS. The reboot function — not to be confused with a device reset that returns it to factory settings — puts phones and tablets into a Before First Unlock (BFU) state that encrypts data files and disables biometric login support until the device PIN has been entered. Apple introduced a similar iPhone “Inactivity Reboot” feature in iOS 18.1 that triggers a device restart after four days of being locked.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, you may want to be aware that after 3 consecutive days of non-usage, Android phones and tablets will auto-reboot, meaning that a passcode is required to get on before using it.
