Rising malpractice premiums are blocking the creation of new transgender “clinics” for teenagers.
“I didn’t anticipate that it was going to be a big deal,” Andy Rowe, the healthcare operations director for The Project of the Quad Cities, told Time magazine.
Rowe had called the clinic’s insurance broker to inquire about getting a new provider added to the organization’s malpractice policy.
The Project of the Quad Cities is an LGBTQ+ clinic located in Moline, Illinois, which has been trying to provide transgender-related medical procedures for minors living across state lines, where such practices are banned.
The organization embarked on this endeavor in June, and by early November, Rowe found that more than a dozen malpractice insurers had declined to offer the clinic a policy.
After five months of searching for malpractice insurance, Rowe finally received a quote for a policy that would allow The Project of the Quad Cities to offer transgender procedures for children, but “that’s when he realized finding a policy was only the first hurdle,” Time reported.
It turned out that coverage that Rowe had anticipated would cost $8,000 to $10,000 a year was instead quoted at $50,000.
Meanwhile, in New Mexico, family medicine physician Anjali Taneja said the clinic she works at was quoted “double what we paid a few years ago” to cover transgender procedures for adults.
While independent clinics and medical practices have been relocating across state lines to offer such medical procedures to minors, they are quickly finding out that obtaining malpractice insurance on the commercial marketplace has become a barrier, even in states that allow such practices.
Insurance industry advocates say these higher premiums are justified due to increasing legislation regarding transgender medical procedures for minors, meaning that clinics are at an increased risk of being sued.
“If state laws increase the risk of civil liability for health professionals, premiums will be adjusted accordingly and appropriately to reflect the level of financial risk incurred by the insured,” Mike Stinson, vice president of public policy and legal affairs at the Medical Professional Liability Association, said.
Stinson added that if state laws make an activity illegal, insurance simply will not cover it.
Those who are opposed to minors receiving transgender-related procedures have recently been pointing to “detransitioners,” who have filed lawsuits against the doctors who allowed them to undergo such medical procedures.
Tumblr media
In the meantime, malpractice premiums are currently serving to put a damper on clinics that want to offer or have been offering surgeries and hormone “therapies” that mutilate children’s bodies.
So many "alleged" medical experts and politicians will one day pay for this. What were they thinking??

April Kepner was born in Columbus, Ohio, on the 23rd April, and was raised on a corn farm in Moline, Ohio.
Her mother (Karen) is a teacher, and her father (Joe) is a farmer.
She is the second of four daughters, the others are Libby, Kimmie and Alice.
She was raised in a strong Christian household, and her faith is something that she continues to hold close to her to this very day.
April is the first of her family to graduate from college, much less from medical school, and her parents are very supportive of this; “over the moon”. Her sisters are not, and they don’t understand why April couldn’t be happy with staying in Ohio.
April began her residency at Mercy West Medical Center, joining the staff at Seattle Grace after the two hospitals merged together.
During her first year at Seattle Grace Mercy West, April made a crucial mistake with a patient following a mass hotel fire, that resulted in a loss of patient life. As a result of this, Kepner was fired for a period of time, but was brought back by Derek Shepherd when he was brought in as Chief of Surgery.
Coming back to Seattle Grace Mercy West had left April with a knock in her confidence, leading her to fall back into a more administrative role, supporting current Chief Shepherd. In fear that she might kill someone again as she had done with the hotel fire, it is Derek who pushes her back into surgery again.
April discovered the body of her best friend Reed Adamson, who had been shot by Gary Clark. She runs into Gary Clark on the catwalk, who lets her go after she tells him mundane facts about her life with a technique that she learned from Oprah. It is after this shooting that April moves into Meredith’s house with Jackson Avery.

April is currently working as chief resident, a title that she takes very seriously even if her fellow fifth-year residents do not consider her appropriate for the job.
She is working closely with Owen Hunt as she is finding her feet to potentially become a trauma surgeon, a specialty that surprised April most of all, but one that came very naturally to her when given the opportunity.
April’s faith is still very important to her, and she always prays for her patients before she takes them in to surgery. While some elements of her faith are traditionally conservative, there are other areas where she is very open-minded.
Kepner considers her relationship with God to be a close one and has remained a virgin for this reason. She kept this a secret from her fellow doctors, however they are all aware of this now following an encounter with a patient with similar views.

In the time between her being fired and then being rehired by Derek, April volunteered at the Roseridge Home for Extended Care.
April dealt with the loss of Reed alone, not calling on her fellow residents for support as they weren’t as close with her.
April is still living at Meredith’s house.
She has already started putting together her note cards for the boards, believing that the sooner she can begin to study the better the opportunity she will have to succeed.
She calls her dad every Thursday evening, and will do it while she is eating if she is at the hospital. He is the family member she speaks to most often, letting him pass on any news to the wider family.

Henry Durrell Ball
September 16, 1887 - February 28, 1915
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball’s father, Henry Durrell Ball, known as “Had” to friends and family, died on February 28, 1915, at 1am, according to his death certificate. Oddly, his death certificate lists the date as February 27, possibly due to the death occurring at 1am.
The official cause of death was typhoid fever. He left his wife Desiree (”Dede”), and a daughter, age four, Lucille (”Lucy”). His wife was pregnant with his second child at the time of his death. His son, Frederick (”Fred”) was born in July 1915. His family is distantly related to George Washington, first President of the United States. Henry Ball was just 28 years old when he died, having been born on September 16, 1887 in Sheridan, New York. Coincidentally, this was the same year that William Frawley (Fred Mertz) was born.
Rumors persist that Henry and Desiree also had another daughter, Ethel Madeline Mitchell (nee Ball). No tangible proof establishes the year of birth or validity of the claim. The rumor was probably motivated by the name “Ethel”.
Tumblr media
At the time of his passing, he was living at 126 Biddle Street, in Wyandotte, Michigan. Professionally, Ball was a lineman for the Bell Telephone Company. He took job offers that moved his family across the country, including Montana and New Jersey.
Tumblr media
"I do remember everything that happened," Lucille said. "Hanging out the window, begging to play with the kids next door who had measles, the doctor coming, my mother weeping. I remember a bird that flew in the window, a picture that fell off the wall." ~ Lucille Ball
The death of her father at such an early age had a great impact on the future queen of comedy. Throughout her television career, and the four situation comedies built around her, the “Lucy” characters had mothers, but their references to their fathers remained vague and off-screen. There are one or two anecdotal mentions of fathers, but nothing of any substance, let alone emotional resonance.
Tumblr media
The one notable exception is in “Lucy and Johnny Carson” (HL S2;E11). When appearing on “The Tonight Show” and playing Stump the Band, Lucy Carter chooses a song titled “Snoops the Lawyer” that she says her father sang to her when she was a child.
Tumblr media
Another was in “Mother of the Bride” (LWL S1;E8) in 1986, where Lucy Barker and her sister Audrey (Audrey Meadows) mention their father in a private conversation in the kitchen.
Tumblr media
The location of Henry’s passing, Wyandotte, Michigan, haunts early seasons of “I Love Lucy” through a framed portrait of Major John Biddle painted by  Thomas Sully (1783-1872). In 1818, Biddle (1792-1859) acquired 1,800 acres of land south of Detroit and built an estate which was later developed into the city of Wyandotte, Michigan. Lucille Ball was about a year old when her family moved to Wyandotte so that her father could take a job with Michigan Bell. Coincidentally, they lived at 126 Biddle Street. When Henry died the family moved back to Jamestown, New York, where Lucille had been born in 1911.
Tumblr media
The portrait of Biddle turns up again during season 5 in “Lucy Goes to a Rodeo” behind the desk of Ricky’s new agent, Johnny Clark.
Tumblr media
OH, HENRY!
Only minor characters in Lucille Ball series’ shared her father’s Christian name:
On Lucy’s radio show “My Favorite Husband” an elevator operator played by Louis Nicoletti was named Henry.
The nearsighted waiter played by Frank Nelson in “Lucy Changes Her Mind” (”Pork chops, huh?”) was named Henry.
The tourist from Kansas at the top of the Empire State Building in “Lucy is Envious” was called Henry (Dick Elliott) by his wife, Martha.
The psychiatrist friend of Ricky’s in “The Inferiority Complex” (“Treatment, Ricky! Treatment!”) played by Gerald Mohr was named Dr. Henry Molin.
Ralph Dumke played Henry Opdyke in the film Forever Darling.
William Windom played Jerry Carmichael’s handsome History teacher Henry Taylor in “Lucy Digs Up a Date”.  Ironically, Lucy would later claim Taylor was her maiden name!
A teller at the Westland Bank was named Henry (Irwin Charone) in “Lucy Gets Mooney Fired.”
A showroom waiter played by Milton Frome in “Lucy and Donny Osmond” was named Henry.
A college student in “Lucy and Andy Griffith” played by Hank Stohl is named Henry.
Tumblr media
Like her own mother, Dede (who is said to have attended every filming of her daughter’s television shows) Lucy Carmichael, Lucy Carter, and Lucy Barker are all widows with children. Lucy Carmichael went the extra mile to be both mother and father to her children in “Lucy Becomes a Father” (TLS S3;E9) in 1964.
Tumblr media
“Several days later Desirée and Lucille accompanied Had's body on the long train ride to upstate New York. On the chill, iron-gray morning of March 5, Had was buried at Lake View Cemetery in Jamestown. Lucille looked on blankly, oblivious to the glances in her direction. At the last moment, as Had's casket was lowered into the grave, the loss suddenly hit home. The little girl was led away screaming to her grandparents' house on Buffalo Street in Jamestown. Mother and child had no other refuge.” ~ BALL OF FIRE by Stefan Kanfer
Tumblr media
When Lucille Ball passed away on April 26, 1989, she was first buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood. Three years later, her children had her exhumed and moved to the family plot at Lake View Cemetery in Jamestown, where Lucy now rests with parents, as well as her brother and grandparents. A new headstone was also created.  “You’ve Come Home”

A Voice From Darkness - Ep1 - The Black Door
What follows below is a transcript of the first episode of A Voice From Darkness. To listen to the podcast - look for it on Apple Podcasts, Google, wherever you normally listen to podcasts, or here.
INTRO
Dark ambient drone.
RYDER
You find yourself alone in an abandoned manor. The furniture moves of its own accord, whispers resonate from empty rooms. The dead are unquiet all around you.
A beat.
RYDER
You need my help.

INTRO MUSIC
RYDER
This is A Voice From Darkness.
Intro music continues, but gradually fades out.
ACT 1
RYDER
Hello. As always this is Dr. Malcolm Ryder, parapsychologist. You’re listening to A Voice From Darkness. If you’re having any problems that are paranormal, supernatural, unexplainable in any way please call in.
A beat.
RYDER
I’m here to help. Oh, and my producer is letting me know we have a call on the line. Tell us your name, caller.
All of Amanda's dialogue has the SFX as coming through a telephone.
AMANDA
Hello, Dr. Ryder, my name's Amanda Ful-
She cuts herself off.
AMANDA
Just Amanda.
RYDER
That's all right, Amanda - we don't need to know your last name. But we do need to know what you're calling about. What unnerving situation have you found yourself in?
AMANDA
Can I ask you a question first? Is that all right?
RYDER
Of course, please - ask away.
AMANDA
To be completely honest - and I'm sorry - but I've never listened to your show before. I've heard of it - obviously - otherwise I wouldn't be calling. But... do most people call in about vampires, zombies, werewolves? Those sorts of things?
RYDER
If I understand your question, what you're asking is: do most of our calls involve familiar paradigms of the supernatural? Is that correct?
AMANDA
Yes. I guess that's what I was getting at.
RYDER
Believe it or not - no. Most calls are... stranger. Outliers. Every conversation on this show, at its root, features an occurrence that the caller cannot explain by simply invoking the natural world. Vampires, werewolves, demons - perhaps sometimes people interpret the raw sensory data they take in as such creatures. But that does not mean they exist. At the very least not in ways we've traditionally conceived them. Does that make sense? Did I answer your question?
AMANDA
No. No - that answered my question. Thank you. It makes me feel better too. What I'm calling about - it's not like a ghost or demon. I don't think? I don't know what's happening, really.
RYDER
And what is that you've called about, Amanda?
A beat.
AMANDA
(uncertain)
A black door?
RYDER
A black door? Have you walked through this door and something happened? Did you witness a terrible being emerge from the door?
AMANDA
No. I haven't gone through - or any of that. I... I... I'm sorry I should have thought about what I wanted to say before calling. It's - it's complicated.
RYDER
For complicated things - I think it's best if we start at the beginning. When did you first notice the door?
AMANDA
The first time. Right, I probably should start with that. The first time was at a charity event at an art museum. I was there on a date - our second - the guy and me. The first didn't go great - but it wasn't terrible either - so I figured I'd invite him along with me. Only it was awful. Soon as we got there he ran up to the hor d'oeuvres and stuffed his face. Having a guy ignore you to graze on cocktail shrimp is... it's not attractive. Everyone was in the Impressionist wing. That's where the event was. So I slid myself under a velvet rope and took a stroll over to the Postmodern Contemporary Sculpture wing. It's my least favorite kind of art. I figured, "Why would anyone come here when they can spend the evening looking at real art?"
RYDER
I think you're being a little unfair. There's a few contemporary pieces I've seen that-
(interrupts self)
But you didn't call to talk art. Not the point of this call or show. Please - continue.
AMANDA
Right - so between this "sculpture" of a trashcan with the American flag in it and a robot standing in front of a tombstone that reads: RIP The Working Class - there's this black door. The Black Door.
RYDER
It's an art piece? Part of an exhibit?
AMANDA
That's what I thought - at first. The black door was the only thing in the room that didn't wear its subtext on its sleeve, so I went up to it. I wanted to figure out what the artist was communicating. I got close-
(interrupted)
RYDER
What about the door suggested the supernatural to you?
AMANDA
It just... drew me in. It felt like only a few seconds had passed - but this security guard shook me by the shoulder. Asked what I was doing there. I told him I was at the charity thing. He told me that ended hours ago. It was past two in the morning. My bad date and I, we'd gotten there -  I don't know - around seven? I'd been staring at this black door for several hours.
RYDER
You experienced unexplained and mysterious passage of time? That's fantastic.
AMANDA
Why is that fantastic?
RYDER
Well it's not - I mean for you - but it's common across a multitude of sub-fields within the paranormal - from hauntings to alien abductions. So many possibilities...
AMANDA
Is it ever associated with black doors?
RYDER
I'm not sure. What did the guard say about the door?
AMANDA
The guard. I asked him about the artist responsible - who made the door - I thought it was a hypnotic sculpture or something? But he had no idea what I was talking about. He said he didn't see a door. Had never seen one there.
RYDER
It was invisible to him?
AMANDA
No. It vanished. I turned my attention away - to the guard - and when I looked back... it was gone. Disappeared.
A beat.
RYDER
A door that causes time lapses and can disappear? I can't explain it right now, but I'd be happy to research and get back to you on another night, Amanda. Would that be all right?
AMANDA
Doctor, I'm not done. That was just my first encounter. The black door - it's... following me.
A beat.
RYDER
Following you? How? Wait - hold that thought, Amanda. My producer is telling me we need to cut to our pre-recorded segment. I'm sorry, please stay on the line.
TODAY IN ODD AMERICA:
Eerie music plays in the background.
RYDER
On this day in Odd America we find ourselves in Moline, Illinois - the year 1938. After attending a community meeting at the First Methodist Church, the Dhondt family were never seen again. Husband and father Bryan spoke at that night's meeting. His wife Claire accompanied him, as did their only child - seven year old Sarah. Reports at the time stated the family walked home as they lived close to the church. Evidence suggests they arrived safely as daughter Sarah made a diary entry that very night - which noted nothing out of the ordinary. Sarah had played with her friends while her parents attended the meeting. They all went home in high spirits.
A beat.
RYDER
But the next morning, Bryan did not report to work at the John Deere factory. Claire missed her weekly Bible study. Sarah did not show up to school. Friends and family went to their home to learn the cause for their absences. Upon arrival, they found jack-o-lanterns in the bedrooms - two larger for the parents.
One smaller for the daughter. Each carved face made to resemble one of the Dhondts - Bryan, Claire, and Sarah. All contained burnt-out, melted candles.
A beat.
RYDER
The disappearance of the Dhondts is the first recorded case of the Jack-O-Lantern Murders - they're called murders - though this is a misnomer as no bodies have ever been recovered - only pumpkins carved to resemble the missing. Several cases every year have been reported across America since the Dhondts's disappearance. Who's committing these terrifying acts? Is it a singular entity or a coterie that's passed down this dark tradition over the years? And what's become of all the bodies? This is a wide and lonely country. They could be anywhere. And so - it remains a mystery.
A beat.
RYDER
This has been today in Odd America. Now back to our main show.
MUSIC FADES OUT.
ACT II
RYDER
All right, Amanda, we're back. Now, you were saying, the black door is following you?
AMANDA
I see it everywhere. Most places I go - the same door is... there.
RYDER
How do you know it's the same door? What does it look like? I mean, other than being black.
AMANDA
The doorknob's a dull, unassuming brass, I guess? The rest... The door itself it isn't wood or metal painted black. I don't know what it is, but it's darker. Like...
A beat.
AMANDA
Like the center of a black hole. Like the color of absence. It hurts to stare at. I could feel a strain in my eyes... and my chest at the museum... Not just then - every time I look at it, really.
RYDER
The color of absence? That reminds me of the Nietzsche quote, paraphrasing but, "Fight not with monsters lest you become one. And gaze not into the abyss, for when you do the abyss gazes into you."
AMANDA
That's exactly how it feels - when you stare at it - this black void is staring right back into you. Feeling your insides.
RYDER
And this door, that's the color of absence, is following you?
AMANDA
The black door's everywhere. My apartment building, work, the grocery store. Everywhere. But never in the same spot. One day it'll be next to the copy machine at work, then down the hall of my apartment building. The door's always moving. But always near me. Like a shark circling its next victim.
A beat.
AMANDA
I've asked others if they see the door - most the time it disappears after I ask... but sometimes... Sometimes a co-worker or someone - I'll ask them - and they will see it. They'll stop and stare at it - into it. I'll have to shake them - Force them to look away. Then... I'll ask about the door again. And they all say me the same thing: Open the door.
A beat.
AMANDA
Everyone who's seen the door tells me I need to open it. After they say that - the door disappears, and they forget. The worst time... The worst time my best friend at work. We were in the break room, alone, during our lunch and it appeared. Unannounced. Unwelcome - like always. I pointed to it - hoping it'd just disappear and we could keep talking about whatever Netflix show she'd watched last night. I think that's what we were talking about. Only...
A beat.
Before I could lower my hand, she dug her nails into my wrist. Her eyes were locked on the door. Her nails pierced so far into me - I bled. Not a little either. Before I knew it, there was red everywhere. The table. The floor. Her. I couldn't get her nails out of me - or get her to look away. She's one of my closest friends - I was a bridesmaid at her wedding, and... I had to throw her against the ground. To get her to stop. To get her to look away and let go. After I did... she gently released me, put her bloody hands on my face, and told me to open the door.
RYDER
(empathetic)
That's terrible.
I'm sure it was traumatic to go through.
(back to business)
You haven't opened the door though, right?
AMANDA
No. No. I haven't.
A beat.
AMANDA
Not yet, anyway. I guess that's why I really called. What would happen if I did open it? What's behind it? At the very least, if I opened it, even just a crack, would - would it stop following me? Do you know, Doctor?
RYDER
Amanda, under no condition should you open the door. I'll be honest - I have no idea what's on the other side. I've never heard of anything like this before. But from everything you've said - I can't imagine it's anything good. You agree with that, right?
Dead air.
RYDER
Amanda?
AMANDA
(disappointed)
Yes - I mean, I guess I do.
A beat.
AMANDA
I was really hoping you could help me, Doctor.
RYDER
Amanda, I can help. But you need to give me time to research. Promise me you won't open the door - won't touch it - won't go near it. We need to figure out what it is.
AMANDA
Yes. Yes I promise not to open the black door.
A beat.
AMANDA
For now.
Her phone disconnects.
RYDER
Amanda?
A beat.
RYDER
I believe she hung up. Well if you're still listening, Amanda. Stay strong. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. But that's all the time we have for now. Remember - if you are bothered by anything supernatural or unexplainable - please give me a call - next time on A Voice From Darkness.

ANNIE: It's not so bad. We've had some really decent donations, and it's helping. (they hand off the boxes to the men on the truck) We actually have a part-time paid psychiatric staff. GUNN: What if I told you it doesn't help? What would you do if you found out that none of it matters? That it's all controlled by forces more powerful and uncaring than we can conceive, and they will never let it get better down here. What would you do? ANNIE: I'd get this truck packed before the new stuff gets here. (Gunn nods) Wanna give me a hand? GUNN: I do. (they each take one end of a couch) 1, 2, 3! (they each lift their end of the couch and bring it to the truck)

Beyond the Forest (1949) dir. King Vidor. 6.7/10
We like Lewis.
What kinda efficient binoculars?
Idk how to feel about Jenny since she seemed good hearted to a degree, but was also kind of rude.
Spoiler: [About Rosa Moline being accused of murder. The whole town of Loyalton is here to watch her trial. We flash back to her watching her husband, Lewis, and the hunting lodge keeper, Moose, go fishing. They pass by the Latimer lodge and the men talk about how the 18 baths are too much. They get back to the hunting lodge and Lewis leaves early since he has to tend to a patient’s pregnancy due to him being the town doctor. Rosa stays behind by feigning a hurt ankle. She also hides a bottle of alcohol nearby so that the 3 months sober Moose can find it. When Moose finds it and starts going on a drinking binge, Rosa sneaks away to the Latimer lodge. She sets herself up and when Neil Latimer arrives, they continue their affair. Neil is a rich, Chicago man. Lewis manages the birth of the child well, but the mother needs blood plasma and he gets it for them even though money is difficult for this family and they can’t pay Lewis. Rosa talks to Neil later about how she wants to marry him and leave Lewis. She wants to leave this town because she wants better things. He goes back to Chicago later and she sees a newcomer come in from the Chicago train. She later learns that she is Moose’s lost daughter, Carol. She originally believed she was involved with Latimer since she was going to his residence and her suitcase had the initials ‘C.L.’ Moose and Carol join her and Lewis at their place and as they are talking, Rosa tries on her mink coat and loves it. She later requests money from Lewis to go to Chicago, but he doesn’t have that kind of money. She then goes around town asking everyone for money to pay back for his services. When he finds out, he gives her the money, but tells her that if she takes it, she shouldn’t come back. She takes it and goes to Chicago. She tries to meet up with Neil, but she won’t be seen. When she gives up hope after trying all day, he calls her in the evening and wants to meet up. He mentions how he fell in love and wants to marry another girl, but is willing to give Rosa money. She refuses and exits his car. She goes back home and gets pregnant with Lewis. Lewis then wants her to socialize more with the town since she doesn’t have friends. They go to Carol’s birthday party for Moose and Latimer shows up too. He privately asks Rosa for marriage since he can’t be himself with her and the other girl was like a blank page. He has to go hunting with the men tomorrow, but promises to meet her back in the lodge in an hour to elope. As she waits, Moose tells her that he knows and they won’t get away with it. He tells Rosa to reveal that she’s pregnant or he will As he goes out to hunt, Rosa gets a hunting gun and kills him. We are back at the trial and it concludes with death by accident. Neil tells her later that they should lay low for a few months so they can get married without dirt to their name. She doesn’t want to, but has to. She gets unsatisfied even more at home and reveals her murder and her affair to Lewis. He wants her to have the baby and then leave even though she doesn’t want the baby. She dresses up in their servant’s clothes and tries to sneak to the lawyer’s office. Lewis notices nonetheless and gets her back and as they drive back, she makes him get a blanket from the trunk. She then jumps down the cliff. When they get back home, she’s sick and she shoves the medicine away. As he goes to the office to get more medicine, Jenny has to watch over her. Rosa gets delirious and makes her pack her things so she can catch the last train to Chicago even though she’s horribly sick. By the time she gets to the train, it departs as she falls to the ground. Lewis picks her up from the ground and she is dead.]

Summary
Tumblr media
When most people think of a doctor their thoughts usually go to a family physician or a surgeon, many people forget that there are doctors that do not practice modern western medicine. The article "6 Alternative Doctors You Should Consider Seeing” by Peg Moline gives information on different types of doctors that treat different things. Moline starts off by describing an ayurvedic physician. This type of physician centers around the five elements of earth, fire, wind, air, and ether. The physician then determines a plan of treatment based on your body and personality type, offering you a plan of herbs, diet and detoxification, yoga, meditation, and massage. This practice aims for all around health, but it can also be used to treat arthritis and cardiovascular disease. The next physician describes is a homeopathic practitioner. Homeopathy can be used to help numerous illnesses such as, allergies, colds, flu, anxiety, nervous tension, shock, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, nausea, PMS, and menopause symptoms, and long-term chronic conditions, such as fibromyalgia. Moline then goes on to describe the workings of massage therapists, who treat body pains, depression, and sometimes even asthma. These are treated by massaging certain parts of the body to release specific hormones. Another doctor Moline recommends is a hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapists treat anxiety, phobias, and depression by targeting the subconscious part of the brain that is more open to changing behaviors. If you are interested in utilizing herbs, exercise, meditation, nutrition, and nature therapy to treat your long-term chromic conditions such as depression, anxiety, PMS, asthma, or gastrointestinal issues then a naturopath may be best for you. Naturopaths strive for homeostasis within the body and they aim to prevent issues. The last physician Moline discusses is osteopathy. Osteopathy treats spine and joint problems, muscle pain, depression and other ailments by strengthening muscles, joints, spine, and connective tissue. One great thing included in this article is that Moline gives information on ways to find and incorporate each of these doctors into your life.

LIZ’S INFERIORITY COMPLEX
February 3, 1951
Tumblr media
“Liz’s Inferiority Complex” (aka “Liz Develops an Inferiority Complex”) is episode #117 of the radio series MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcast on February 3, 1951.
This was the 19th episode of the third season of MY FAVORITE HUSBAND. There were 31 new episodes, with the season (and series) ending on March 31, 1951.
Tumblr media
Synopsis ~ After messing up a joke, bombing at bridge, and lousing up George's breakfast, Liz develops an inferiority complex.
Tumblr media
Note: This program was the basis for the “I Love Lucy” episode "The Inferiority Complex" (ILL S2;E18) filmed on September 6, 1952 and first aired on  February  2, 1953.  Much of the dialogue is repeated verbatim from the radio program.

“My Favorite Husband” was based on the novels Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage (1940) and Outside Eden (1945) by Isabel Scott Rorick, which had previously been adapted into the film Are Husbands Necessary? (1942). “My Favorite Husband” was first broadcast as a one-time special on July 5, 1948. Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch “My Favorite Husband” as a series. Bowman was not available Richard Denning was cast as George. On January 7, 1949, confusion with bandleader Xavier Cugat prompted a name change to Cooper. On this same episode Jell-O became its sponsor. A total of 124 episodes of the program aired from July 23, 1948 through March 31, 1951. After about ten episodes had been written, writers Fox and Davenport departed and three new writers took over – Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, and head writer/producer Jess Oppenheimer. In March 1949 Gale Gordon took over the existing role of George’s boss, Rudolph Atterbury, and Bea Benaderet was added as his wife, Iris. CBS brought “My Favorite Husband” to television in 1953, starring Joan Caulfield and Barry Nelson as Liz and George Cooper. The television version ran two-and-a-half seasons, from September 1953 through December 1955, running concurrently with “I Love Lucy.” It was produced live at CBS Television City for most of its run, until switching to film for a truncated third season filmed (ironically) at Desilu and recasting Liz Cooper with Vanessa Brown.
MAIN CAST

Lucille Ball (Liz Cooper) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Richard Denning (George Cooper) was born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger Jr., in Poughkeepsie, New York. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Plans called for him to take over his father’s garment manufacturing business, but he developed an interest in acting. Denning enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He is best known for his  roles in various science fiction and horror films of the 1950s. Although he teamed with Lucille Ball on radio in “My Favorite Husband,” the two never acted together on screen. While “I Love Lucy” was on the air, he was seen on another CBS TV series, “Mr. & Mrs. North.” From 1968 to 1980 he played the Governor on “Hawaii 5-0″, his final role. He died in 1998 at age 84.
Gale Gordon (Rudolph Atterbury) had worked with Lucille Ball on “The Wonder Show” on radio in 1938. One of the front-runners to play Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy,” he eventually played Alvin Littlefield, owner of the Tropicana, during two episodes in 1952. After playing a Judge in an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in 1958, he would re-team with Lucy for all of her subsequent series’: as Theodore J. Mooney in ”The Lucy Show”; as Harrison Otis Carter in “Here’s Lucy”; and as Curtis McGibbon on “Life with Lucy.” Gordon died in 1995 at the age of 89.
Bea Benadaret (Iris Atterbury) was considered the front-runner to be cast as Ethel Mertz but when “I Love Lucy” was ready to start production she was already playing a similar role on TV’s “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” so Vivian Vance was cast instead. On “I Love Lucy” she was cast as Lucy Ricardo’s spinster neighbor, Miss Lewis, in “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15) in early 1952. Later, she was a success in her own show, “Petticoat Junction” as Shady Rest Hotel proprietress Kate Bradley. She starred in the series until her death in 1968.
Ruth Perrott (Katie, the Maid) does not appear in this episode, although she is mentioned.
Bob LeMond (Announcer) also served as the announcer for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy”. When the long-lost pilot was finally discovered in 1990, a few moments of the opening narration were damaged and lost, so LeMond – fifty years later – recreated the narration for the CBS special and subsequent DVD release.
GUEST CAST
Tumblr media
Alan Reed (Dr. Auerbach) is probably best remembered as the voice of Fred Flintstone. He started his acting career in 1937. He played a cafe owner in “Lucy Visits the White House” (TLS S1;E25) first aired on March 25, 1963. In 1967, he made an appearance on the Desi Arnaz series “The Mothers-in-Law”. He died in 1977 at the age of 69.
Bea Benadaret (Iris) played Betty Rubble on “The Flintstones” with Reed.  The character was likely named for comic actor Artie Auerbach. In 1938, he announced plans to marry Cleo, Lucille Ball’s cousin. Ball intervened because she was underage, but the couple later married anyway.  Like most psychiatrists on TV and radio, Reed speaks with a German accent, no doubt inspired by Sigmund Freud.  On the television version of “The Inferiority Complex” the psychiatrist was played by Gerard Mohr and the character’s name was Dr. Henry Molin.
THE EPISODE
ANNOUNCER: “Let's look in on the Coopers. It’s evening and they're entertaining George's boss, Mr. Atterbury, and his wife Iris. Dinner is over and the group are now in the living room.”
They discuss what a wonderful meal Liz prepared for them. Mr. Atterbury ate a 17 oysters! He's even got a joke to accompany the oysters, about a deep sea diver and a mermaid, but Iris won't let him tell it in mixed company.
LIZ: “Iris, this company isn’t mixed, it’s married!
Tumblr media
Liz decides that she'll try to tell one instead, but she's not very good at telling jokes. She cannot decide whether it is about a man or a woman - or a restaurant or a cafeteria.  Liz can’t remember the punch line, but George impatiently interrupts and tells the joke for her.
GEORGE: “The woman said I’ll take two pork chops and make them lean. And the waiter said ‘yes, ma’am, which way?’”
Everyone agrees that Liz can’t tell jokes. She dissolves into tears.
Tumblr media
To change the subject, they decide to play bridge instead. Nobody wants to partner with Liz.  This fuels her feelings of inferiority.
Tumblr media
At breakfast the next day, Liz confesses that she’s not so bright and that she doesn’t do things well.  The breakfast is undercooked, so George tells her to talk to Katie. Liz is in tears again - it is Katie’s day off and she has prepared breakfast herself. She can’t tell jokes, she can’t play bridge, and now she can’t cook. She challenges George to name one thing she’s good at.
GEORGE: “You’re very good at....  Well, your wonderful at... You’re really great at, uh...” LIZ: “Waaah!” GEORGE: “What are you crying for?” LIZ: “I can’t think of anything either.”
Later, Iris drops by and find Liz in bed, depressed. Iris refuses to believe that Liz is a failure.
IRIS: “You can...  Well, for one thing you’re the best at.... Well, you’ve always been tops in...” LIZ: “Those are the same ones George came up with.”
Iris says that at the very least that there isn’t another person in the world who gets their hair the color Liz does! George comes home from work and is surprised to find Liz still in bed.  He takes Iris aside and says that he will take Liz to a psychiatrist.
At the psychiatrist's office, Dr. Auerbach (Alan Reed) examines Liz.
DOCTOR: “Lie down on the couch.” LIZ: “Why?” DOCTOR: “I dunno. That’s what they do in the movies.”
Liz can’t find anything interesting about herself to tell the Doctor, so she ask him to tell her something about himself. It isn’t long before he is the patient and she is the therapist.
Tumblr media
In the television version, Ricky convinces the Doctor to pretend to be an old friend, and brings him home instead of Lucy going to his office to provide his ‘treatment’.  Ricky gets jealous of the Doctor’s attentions, but Lucy reminds him it is all part of the “Treatment, Ricky!  Treatment!”
Later, George invites the Atterburys over to tell them the results of Liz’s exam.  The Doctor suggests they try to restore her confidence by building up her ego.  George tells them that whatever Liz does, they should ‘lay it on thick’.
MR. ATTERBURY (gushing): “Liz!  Dream girl!”
Tumblr media
Earlier, George also called Liz ‘Dream Girl’.  In 1947, just prior to starting “My Favorite Husband,” Lucille Ball starred in a revival tour of the Edgar Rice play Dream Girl.
Tumblr media
Everything Liz says or does, the others break out in laughter and compliments.  Liz is emboldened by their enthusiasm and keeps telling story after story - until the entire room is nodding off from boredom and it is 2:30 in the morning.
Liz finally tells them to give it up - she heard George on the telephone with the psychiatrist and she’s been on to their scheme the whole time.  Why did she let them go on for so long?
LIZ: “Because this is the first time in my life I’ve gotten to be the center of attention for the whole evening and I liked it.”

April and May
It’s been a momentous few months, and full of all the emotions life can bring in such seasons of change. We’ve smiled and belly-laughed, cried and wept, experienced deep loss and relinquishment, felt dread, fear, deep body and soul fatigue, reminisced hundreds of memories, and spoken so many goodbyes.  We’ve experienced such joy and love, friendship and kindness, compassion and generosity...beyond what we could have imagined. And such is the stuff life is made of!
But we are on the other side of the move and beginning to settle into our new “normal”. Thankfully!
We gave ourselves a short get-away retreat at the end of March anticipating what was to come and spent five nights at the LaQuinta Resort in the Palm Springs area.  We loved being there for my 50th birthday and again loved being there for my 66th birthday! Yikes...where does the time go? We love the desert in bloom and it was particularly beautiful this year.
Tumblr media
We then headed for Turlock and began the process of moving. Our wonderful friends generously gave hours of their time and energy to help sort, pack, label and box our belongings. And then took multiple loads to Off Center Thrift, Goodwill and who knows where else. Many hands make labor light. And again we declared our mutual desires for a simpler life!
We shared farewells with two groups that week; our neighbors and our church family. We have felt so privileged to live on a street with such wonderful people and for 17 years have enjoyed our neighborhood get-togethers and informal gatherings.  We have literally watched the kids in several families grow up. We will so miss them! We also had an informal reception at Monte Vista Chapel where we said more goodbyes. I have been part of this wonderful church for 51 years...John for 43 years. There is nothing like the local church. It is here we have learned to live with and love a great diversity of people. People of different ethnicities, backgrounds, economics, status, jobs, political views, temperaments and passions, education and philosophies. The church is God’s plan A for growing us in love for one another. How grateful I am for how this group of Christ-followers have loved and nurtured me (and my family) for these many years.  We will so miss you MVC! Here’s some of my friends that made this happen.
Tumblr media
We headed to Morro Bay for another ten days of getting our house here ready for the boxes and furniture soon to be arriving. And here I have developed a wonderful friendship with Laura, a woman I met at our church in Morro Bay who comes to be with me once or twice a week for 4 hours and gives John some time away (usually on a motorcycle). What I love about Laura is that she makes any task fun and interesting because of the soul-full conversations we engage in. You may have read the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” about a man spending Tuesdays with his beloved professor who was dying of ALS. I call our time together “Thursdays with Laura”, though I am not dying.  She has worked feverishly this past month helping me decide what stays, what goes and where to make it all fit. Her passion is organized closets and so is mine. Could not have done it without her!
Tumblr media
The final farewell was in our backyard just three days before the house closed and the furniture movers packed us up. We enjoyed the company of friends and family from all the varied intersections of life in this wonderful community.  And another highlight was being able to introduce Josh’s finance Sarah to our world. It was a very special evening and our hearts will never forget it!
I could have never imagined moving away from Turlock at this age, but it feels good and right. But hard! And isn’t that true of much of life? It is the pain and difficult places we endure and persevere through that bring us to deeper places of peace and joy than we could have imagined. Oh how we will miss Turlock! It’s where my dad’s Swedish ancestors settled in 1903. There have been Molines and Claes in Turlock ever since. The stability of life that comes from being in a community over a long period of time is a gift many will never experience, but how grateful we are that we did. We are excited to have sold our home to a gentleman who is a longtime Turlock native who loves its unique features and who will care for it well. Thank you Ken!
We no sooner got the boxes unpacked in Morro Bay and John took off on a much-deserved five day motorcycle ride with his two good friends through California, Nevada, and Utah. Nothing recharges his batteries more than the beauty of God’s creation and a “crotch-rocket.”  Nothing recharges my soul more than good friends, laughter, deep conversations, a little shopping and cards.  I am so grateful for Carla, Belinda and Jackie who came down to care for me in John’s absence. The highlight being we got to share in a very special day...Carla’s 70th birthday!

We spent three days in Santa Barbara last week, seeing my ALS neurologist and my Parkinson’s Disease neurologist.  Also had a 4 hour neuro-psych evaluation. The fun never stops! But the good news is that both doctors were quite surprised at how much better I am doing. The exams showed “remarkable” improvement in my strength, which has resulted in many of my daily tasks being easier and my stamina increasing. Whether it’s the increased dosage of Parkinson’s meds, the answer to prayers for healing, the move completed and the decrease of stress, or all of the above...we are celebrating! The doctors always remind us of how unusual my case is and they can’t predict anything because they’ve never seen anything like it.  But they both said that I “made their days”!  Not often do they see improvement with diseases like these.
So on that bright note, I will close this lengthy blog until the next time.
