There’s no denying that I like an organ’s thick juicy sound. My love started with that Farfisa bounce in 60s garage rock – i.e. 96 Tears. It expanded with Vanilla Fudge, ELP. I think on of my fruit jazz organ lps with Jimmy Smith’s Monster (more about him when I get to ’S’]. Back in the day when I flipped though bins of 2nd hand cds I came upon Brother Jack McDuff (1926-2001) lp: Gettin’ Our…

The Wyld Gooms: Fierce Garage Punk Ravers | Outro Records 029
The Wyld Gooms – “You Did Me Wrong” / “Doesn’t Matter To Me” (Outro Records 029) January 2022 I finally obtained a copy of the first single by the latest garage punk hoodlums on the impressive Outro record label. The 45 was released during January 2022 but it’s taken a couple of months for this potent disc to circulate in the UK and through the hands of some of my trusted English record…

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO! “Air Raid” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbUdbVyKqJE  “Noir Reggae” is how I describe this song. The somber and metaphorical lyrics were inspired by dreams I had after reading a play by British writer Charles Williams (one of The Inklings, the league of writers that included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien). The message: A common enemy shakes people out of their squabbles and unifies them for a righteous cause, but wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to wait for bombs to drop to get people together? My early demo of this was in a Rolling Stones "Some Girls" style, but then I took it into a Bowie-ish space-reggae direction. Guitarist Chris Bovard was slotted to play but couldn't make the session, so I did it, imagining Stevie Ray Vaughn doing surf guitar with a dose of ISLANDS-era Robert Fripp (I also played a nifty Farfisa organ). I'm thinking of re-cutting this song someday with a harder reggae rock beat, like Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved?" Thanks for tuning in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbUdbVyKqJE

A cover of The Seeming and the Meaning by Stereolab.
youtube
Spent some time over the past couple days doing a full accurate cover of the kind of song I’d like to write, as an exercise in finishing something, and was able to learn and practice a bunch in the process, including some actual actionable information about “mastering,” which is a thing the music production influencers seem to either make sound like a dark art or alternatively tell you is learnable if you just take their upcoming $400 class, be sure to like and subscribe.
Not that there’s any hiring wrong with that! Related, not that you can tell from my mostly unfinished lead vocals here, but I had my second (in person) voice lesson this week, and again, a little trick called “breathing” seems to be one of the key tactics to master.
My homework is Fly Me To The Moon. Maybe I’ll do something with it.
I think a question I’ll need to research soon is what a real “let’s record some vocals” workflow is supposed to look like. Recording a whole bunch of takes to a loop, I think, is a thing I should be doing? And maybe something called comping?
But I know I should be warming up, breathing, and choosing keys that fit my range, which should be especially easy when I’m the one writing the dang songs.

i genuinely believe if u like turn depth and vibrato to the lowesst on an organ and sorta get the drawbars at a certain simplicity u can just spam the highest octave notes and ppl will think ur good cause u sound sorta like ray manzarek. like i dont any ppl i jam w/ cause i dont kno any ppl but like if smthn happened where i had to play w/ a band live id just spam that shit hitting as many notes in the highest octave on the black keys and i think ppl would think it would sound good and professional.
