There’s not much known about where exactly Riley Maddox came from. Some may say she came straight from the pits of hell. The only memory that comes to mind when thinking of a time before being shuffled from foster home to foster home is of a beautiful blonde looking at her in the rearview mirror of a beat up car. A warm smile, two bright headlights coming towards them and then, nothing but darkness.

Police would say it was a drunk driver but Riley was never sure which driver exactly was to blame for her mother’s death.

Jumping from foster home to foster home for all of her childhood, Riley learned very quickly that people are mostly not to be trusted. Running away, starting fights, whatever she could to get through until she was old enough to be on her own. When she was just eight years old, she met the ying to her yang. Cole Walters was around the same age and just as angry. They were inseparable from the moment they met, forever causing trouble and simply being the bane of their social worker’s existence. 

Try as they might to keep the two separated, they’d always find each other. And Cole is the only person that Riley has ever considered to be as close to family. 

As they grew, so did their anger. Juvenile delinquents who had nothing to lose. 

A perfect storm of bad intentions, they’d hit up liquor stores, sneak into clubs, start fires. Whatever they could to feel something. Riley’s specialty was stealing cars. While her mind wasn’t academically smart, she was always curious about how things worked, taking things apart and putting them back together.

Stealing cars for joy rides were a regular occurrence but selling them for parts was more lucrative. But there was only so much one can do in a busy city without getting noticed. On the precipice of aging out of the system, Riley wasn’t about to let Cole start a new life without her so they decided to run. 

Escaping from Brooklyn in a stolen car, they road-tripped around the States, making money and making trouble. It was tiring, always scrounging for cash, moving from place to place. Riley never longed to be still.

Stillness always came at a cost. 

One night, after spending all their cash on whatever the hell they felt like, the two decided to rob a liquor store with a stolen gun that Riley had taken from an ex-lover. With her waiting in the getaway car out the back, it felt like every run they’d done before. But this one was different. 

As shots were fired from inside and the sirens came in the distance, Riley knew that she had to bail. Once the police had arrested Cole, she knew it wasn’t long before they took her too. After destroying the car beyond recognition, she waited for them to come. But they didn’t. Cole didn’t breathe a word. 

After his conviction, Cole got five years for attempted robbery and theft of a firearm and Riley wanted to say that she’d never leave his side for what he did for her and all they’d been through, but that wasn't the case. They'd been on the run for so long, she didn't know how to sit still. Jumping from place to place around the country but it never felt the same without her brother, she always needed someone else to hold her down and keep her steady.

She ended up in Arizona, working in a local mechanic when she met Kyle. At first, Riley thought they were perfect for each other. He worked as a boxing instructor at the local rink wanting to make it to the big-time, but Riley knew he was never gonna get there. ( tw: domestic violence ) Their relationship was tumultuous, screaming rows and thrown objects at each other. For Kyle looking at another girl's ass at a bar, for Riley getting home too late from the mechanic's where she worked, for Kyle taking steroids to keep up with other fighters at the gym. It only took one time for him to give her a black eye for her to know she needed to leave. Once that boundary is broken, it only gets more frequent from there.

At this time, Riley knew that Cole had finally gotten out and was living in some beach town in California. She hadn't contacted him, worrying that he'd hate her for never visiting but with her face half beat to shit, Riley didn't have anywhere to go. She left in the middle of the night, stole her car boyfriend’s car and drove straight into Aurora Bay to find him.

HISTORY —

Asher’s earliest memories were of being raised by everybody and nobody all at once. His mother was either happy and overbearing or she hardly had the patience to handle him or his siblings at all after long shifts down at the local diner. A busy household full of kids, he had been the youngest for five years of his life. That did not mean he was doted on, but rather, passed around.

His father was a frail ghost of a man, a hollowed-out shell whose presence cast an uncomfortable pallor over the home that over time. He ended up laid off at his construction job early in Ash's life, and he became a man Ash grew to resent when he felt more absent despite his consistent presence in their trailer. Molding to the recliner in the living room, only paying mind to the television.

His oldest sister held things together, for the most part, along with his older brother. They were a cohesive unit to help around the house as their mother worked long hours and their father sat in his favorite recliner watching reruns to his favorite shows.

Until the day his older brother decided enough was enough and he left, his mother screaming while he disappeared. Asher was already prone to bouts of fiery frustration, next in line as the middle child he helped shoulder some responsibilities with his eldest sibling for the sake of his younger twin sisters.

A tumultuous home life bled into school, and not one to tolerate bullies – not for himself, and even less so for the two girls – Asher lashed out frequently on both of their behalf. He also lacked his own emotional regulation, and when things got to be too much, too fast, expressing the frustrations was not an easy task for him. He'd shut down or he'd lash out, no in between.

He was always moving, always a part of him fidgeting. His knee incessantly bouncing under the table and hands touching anything within reach never failed to eventually make his mother snap at him, and, having not realized he was doing it, he would comply. Give it a couple minutes later, he’d be thinking about something else and would be at it again. Itching to move, unable to focus. He needed stimulation of some sort, distractions, to have multiple things to divide his attention with until it was too much. A diagnosis of ADHD only led to medication that Asher tried and then after weeks of brain fog, he flushed instead.

The first thing he stole from an actual business was a pack of gum from the gas station he was working at. After then it was some hygiene products and next, cigarettes, even though he didn’t smoke at the time. That's when he learned there was something addictive about the thrilling feeling of theft, and he reveled in the anticipation of making sure he didn’t get caught. Not to mention the lucrative venture it was to resell any stolen products from cartons of cigarettes to pints of booze. It is only expected he had a few petty-crime arrests, but that just taught him to be sneakier about it.

Somewhere along the lines, Asher decided he was done with Scottsdale, Arizona, so when he was twenty-three he decided to follow his older brother's footsteps. His youngest sisters were old enough now to fend for themselves, and half the cash he made reselling stolen items was stashed in an envelope that he taped behind his dresser. So, he hopped on a bus and headed West.

Passed Phoenix and through Nevada, he ended up getting off somewhere near Los Angeles. Apartment prospects were slim, and it took a minute before he found himself sofa surfing via Craigslist adds. He paid those who allowed him to sleep on the couch as he bounced around until he headed out of the bigger city life and south.

Once again, he hopped on a bus and took it to a nameless destination. That ended up being Aurora Bay. A smaller beach town that is more laid back, right on the water which Ash has grown to love, and easy to navigate as his feet search for firm ground. He's still wet behind the ears, but his ability to adapt as made it easier for him to make it home. Between his wages and the occasional… petty theft… he found a studio to live in. Even with his mattress on the floor still, it's home for now, and he couldn't be more content.

⊹ his favorite nonalcoholic drink is strawberry lemonade. as for alcoholic, he has a preference for beers, especially any sort of craft IPAs. though he is also more than happy to settle with a bottle of corona.

⊹ he doesn't take medication for his ADHD. one trial run on something he cannot remember the name of turned him into a zombie for three months - his words. he didn't feel the same, his mind was foggy, he had no drive. that was enough for ash to just avoid any prescription aid there on out.

CONNECTIONS.

Asher is a rather amicable person. He is friendly and tries to be kind to most people, but his brotherly tendencies to tease and give people a hard time does come out from time to time. It’s all in good fun even if it might rub people the wrong way. He does mean well despite that. The fact he’d grown up a little too fast for his liking has him catching up on lost time, per se, so he easily shirks his responsibilities in favor of fun. Impulsivity is a weakness of his as he fervently chases that dopamine rush.

He also has a tendency to fall through on communication on his end of the conversation, be it because he forgot after the notification was gone from his text messages, or simply because he’s misplaced his phone. Expect a lack of consistency, but when he is around, a good time.

He does have an end game connection, and hook-up plots are off the table.

♡ @ulyflynn - his first real friend in aurora bay, his ride or die. asher will do do near anything uly asks, and he isn't afraid to smother him with his presence. he doesn't want to imagine his future with his boy by his side. he feels safest around him, and would go so far to say that he'd been meant to wander into aurora bay to cross paths.

♡ @thegillyxliang - blast from the past, an old more-than-friends, deeper than friends-with-benefits relationship. after recent events, they official have a label for the first time.

♡ @helenasoarcs - party partner, asher has no qualms about holding her hands and bringing to any and all of aurora bay's beach keggers and house parties. she is great fun to be around, and he loves when she pops into the shop to distract him from work.

♡ @dancingdanvers - the most unexpected friend, ash enjoys their conversation. she intimidated him at first with her confidence, but as he got to know her he finds an unlikely friend in her. she does well to humor his pointless conversation.

♡ @firefighterrojas - angel could have saved himself from the clingy energy that is asher if he hadn't offered him a helping hand when moving his things into his place next door. now there won't be a single thing he can do to escape, and ash will do well to drag him to the beach and all about if given the chance.

♡ @wesxevans - once online friends that gotten close, a series of hook-ups during the last visit ash took to salem, ma left ash panicked. so, he ran, feelings being too hard of a thing, just as the admission that he reacted to the ego boost and using a best friend for such a thing... well, ash ghosted.

♡ @cricketcampbell - ash knows cricket through gillian, and he thinks she's great fun. MORE TBA.

♡ @dilcne - a neighbor from across the street, ash has a bad habit of letting sedona loose. it's not purposeful, but it does cause for chaos when she decides to chase lorna's cats, or she gets into lorna's flowerbeds. he does replant what he can, until his lack of green thumb proves to be more harm than good, and he is apologetic. it doesn't do anything to lessen the headache of an unruly, bad mannered dog, though.

♡ @atticus-cortes - paths crossed one in the apartments, and then again later at the surf shop, it's as if the universe had meant for these two to become friends. Surf and skate buddies, ash took to atticus quickly. he loves sharing his space with him when the opportunity arises, and he's even set up a second hammock in his living room for him. it might be at the risk of his security deposit, but hey, the homie's got to be comfortable.

♡ @leomlarson - it's written in the stars that at most, if not all, house parties will end with ash and leo crossing one another's path. much to his excitement, of course, as ash finds leo to be a very comforting and easy presence to be around. he never fears judgment around him, always finds a reason to laugh, and can feel like he is a little bit at home in the shroud of smoke that oftentimes surrounds them.

♡ @thevaleriaxortiz - where val is technically asher's older sister, she'd always been his mother figure and confidant. it was a tough decision to leave her behind in arizona, but he knew had he not, he wouldn't have ever made it out. now that she is in aurora bay, he hopes to continue their relationship where it left off, and to share his life there with her.

Chapter Four

(TW: Substance abuse, descriptions of drug dealing. Reader discretion is advised)

Near spring break, Aurora made a fatal decision. She was coming to the end of her options, coming up with a temporary solution. I couldn’t do anything. She never told me her plan, unlike herself. I never saw her in school anymore, but when I stopped by her house she seemed oddly excited for someone recently expelled. We chatted about everything and anything, when I asked about her plans she told me she would get a job. But that doesn’t mean the job was safe or morally good, she wasn’t technically “helping” anyone, right?

She began selling her cocaine, as strange trucks pulled up to her house, with even shadier people driving them. There were the trenchcoats and the undercover businessmen. Her hands were full of cash while doing her little science experiments in her basement. Boxes of baking soda and piles of baggies, spoons, and beakers were laid out and about.

Meanwhile, her mom was still far gone, working a small job. Aurora had changed slightly, or at least had a noticeable increase in her drive for money. But as her dream of living the fast life had just begun, her health took a sharp decline as she fell into a spiral of crack addiction and dealing.

Wow, for once, I realized something was wrong. Nobody around me smoked that much, just in the bathroom. Didn’t stop me from trying to crush my grandpa’s prescriptions. She spent more and more time in her basement, sometimes inviting me with stacks of cash. Her eyes became erratic, clutching onto my wrist for life, contrasting how sullen she’d become.

There were a few clean girls, though. Every time I tried to tell her, she responded with “At least I get that bank.” or “It’s really not that bad, just quit overreacting.” Aurora became more and more unstable, and I had to let go. I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to lose her, not now, not ever. But it wasn’t me who saw her in her last moments.

He wasn’t your typical crazy guy. He wore a white sweater, contrasting his true nature as he approached her house. She was rubbing it on her gums as he convinced her to go out with him. “I’ll drop you back at ten.” She was only seventeen but had no hesitation whatsoever, I liked that about her, her fearlessness. It turned out to be both her best and worst quality.

He took her away and she was found dead in a parking lot seven hours later. It wasn’t a shooting. It must’ve been a failed deal. He nearly got caught for selling it, so he wanted her stash. She refused, like a stingy CEO, a cute one of course. Her eyes still had a slight shimmer. The doctors found it in her system. But what shocked me the most was who did the act. Someone tall and familiar. Someone who always was a stoner. Why, oh why would he want crack? Is that why his car was loitering around at dawn?

And this brings me to how I avenged her death. I couldn’t kill him, hopefully, he would die in prison a few years later. My heart was crushed when I found out, right at the same time as everyone else, a werk into senior year. I wasn’t special. She didn’t even write me a note. Did she want this?

Her smiling yearbook photo was next to Jake’s mugshot in the news, glistening as if nothing had happened that night. Did she realize how selfish she was? I missed her, I missed her too much. Every day when I passed by our shared locker, I looked at the picture of us taped inside. Zebra print washi tape held the edges of our smiling faces as we shared a hug or made funny faces.

I smiled to stop the tears from shedding. I slipped the letter in, the note that conveyed all my feelings, from “I wish you were still here to I love you to Why did you leave me so soon”. But with her death, a little bit of my morality came back. She may have been wrong, but she had a fair cause. Money.

But not enough morality to prevent me from what I did next. Not enough drops of hope to prevent it. My goal was to live fast or die trying. And to continue her memory, I could only attempt to live it out. Get a decent cash flow and do all the things we never got a chance to do. And so, a new chapter in my life began a dark one, but not one that I necessarily regret.

The Investigation

Once upon a time there was very  tall detective whose name was Goldilocks and he  investigated the three bears on vacation in  a house in Dubai. So the tale is not the IIII it appears to be. They never  are. He didn’t like being called Goldilocks. It was an offshoot of his  business which includes heavy parts sarcasm, irony and mispeech in order to  bear the trials of the daily work. All the detectives had nicknames, a female  was Boise Boysee, a looker has to suffer. Donald duck, Don for short, lived  on the canal. Lambragingee, Lambri,  got caught driving a bike to work. They all had their crosses each put  the other on. Goldy for short had surfer hair, not slicked back, but fuzzed  out like the auroa of the sun, or at least when the sun had an aurora. As you  suspect in yer in all tall white dudes he was Dutch, but with some other blood  that suggested in the aborigy, but we’re not here to discuss the gene pool.  That district was named for the airport and took in the less affluent parts  of town, the warehouses, pulperias, lumberyards along the dust banks and the  downtown landfills, squatter camps, extending to the base of the towers up  and over. They divided that valley into north and south and naturally south  for all misanthropes the chumacca lies. This was the way of those explorers  not only to the west and southwest but to the globe. Didn’t they say we love  the centric part, pretending the globe girl and in the girl well we know the  center lies…

He could have  been called moonbeam, or sunshine, or starlight, but the goldy thing wasn’t  helped by his breaking open the case of the three oops, called oops yes, but  also ooks, and they are mighty big bears, or/and they might have been bears,  big fat grizzlies that would eat ya be forewarned, which is the offing of the  folktales abounding and surrounding these events.

The investigation  proceeded first hand, but eventually led to a series of folk tales, street  tales emenating in those neighboods among the freeways and tide flats of the  toxic plumes of TCE that flowed their merry way west from the old Motoola  plants. The tales grew up at the time those plumes were fast  flowing and it continues underground much  the way the tales about the oops ooks did, changing shape, permutatijgn ,  perculating, through the aq

 Uifers, Ubers of  the strata, drifting down to the salt itself. It the tales are toxic so are  the plumes and the alumina air, presume, down to the very word faer in the old  tongue before the Dutch, in that book besides Goldy’s bed. That ‘s like the  tales that Goldy found so much he became a forlift himself, fork-lorist,  collector of coyote tales, Hopi legends, Navajo forts along not just rio  salado, but north of course and down in the canyons among the brush wees of  the rio grande and above that up to the Colorado running cold. I means the  tales were that way, some put upon poles, or walls in praty paint, some found  in old pamphlets with hints in the old painters of Dutchtown as it was then  called, with degrazia untouched, found in the thrifts,  touches un approved [add other painters]  but westers case more as blue riders than realists. The tales exploded at  various points into epiphanies of nonsense and whimsy all which was suitable  f for the amnesia of the times which substituted the blast of the sun at 110  for indoor pleasures of freezer rooms and packages of orm meat that stopped  the force of crime so many days that still sleepy town of 5 million grew to  10 when all the refugees finished their arrival. They would know nothing of  the history of their new solace without such tales as these. Not that Dave,  that’s his real name, Dave Hunt, Goldilocks, or Dave Cash, would collect them  in any other form that a murder book held closely in the department. Grand  juries supposed this and a lot more. Wires and surveillance even more. So we  have a lot to tell, not to go on and on about the docket and the process. In  that town they take their  teenagers  for a night in the lockup as a precaution, same as their tales are still  painted on buildings, if you can read the symbolism. They are part of the  decoration now, licensed by the signage of the city , liegit, people eating  eat other under the rubric of nonsense. So read the billboards more closely  and look for signs of the revelation.

Police procedure  dictates that these things stored in cold cases and archives can only be  leaked sourcelessly to the press so a lot of what occurs below is just that,  stuff from murder boards and books, interviews, interpretations, ver batium  transcripts and the lithe like. How you get these exclusives  is part known part not, and if yor’re  worried about language, native speakes determine the language, I am a native  speaker form the breast  therefore I  have carte blanc. White socks is a symbol of their innocence. Trade in Body  parts is one part of cannibalism. In the mix of truth and fantasy I did  review this book cited at the end.Dave was more of a linguist than he let on.  He had an anglo saxon dictionary by is bedside and read it to go to sleep.

Emerie Montes was tired of people.

First, a group of teenage girls had decided to try on literally every single item of clothing in the store and then leave without buying anything, meaning Emerie had to fold every single piece of clothing. Next, Emerie had been clearing out the clothes left behind in the changing rooms when she walked in on a couple having sex. She had backed out of the room quickly. She’d assumed the couple would stop, but instead they continued their session, even when she told them (from outside the room of course) that it was against the rules to have sex in the changing rooms. At least they had ended up buying something, although the eye contact she made with the guy as she rang up the lingerie set he was buying was so awkward she had almost quit her job right then. Lastly, a mother and daughter duo had found a dress they wanted to buy but the store had run out of the daughter’s size. They had spent 30 minutes lecturing Emerie on the evils of fast fashion, the lack of inclusive sizing, and the failures of the body positivity movement. It wasn’t that Emerie didn’t agree with them; it was just that she had absolutely no power over the clothes sold in the store. Also, her eardrums didn’t appreciate the yelling.

So when Emerie clocked out of her shift, she was planning on driving home, heading straight to her room and staying there until tomorrow morning. That was, of course, until she got the email that her most anticipated summer read, Under the Purple Skies, was available a day early at Velaris’ local bookstore. Curling up on the sofa with Under the Purple Skies would turn her shitty day upside down, so she headed to the bookstore, ready to endure people for just a few more minutes. At least people at bookstores were a better brand of human, right?

Feyre Archeron was embarrassed.

On the whole, her day seemed amazing: her friends with benefits, Isaac, had taken her out to the mall, where he’d bought her shoes, sushi, lingerie, and dresses, and she’d had some of the best sex of her life. Unfortunately, said sex had been interrupted, since it took place in a shop’s changing room — hence the embarrassment.

What was even worse was that Isaac didn’t seem to realize that it was anything to be embarrassed about. To be fair, this wasn’t the first time they’d had sex in semi-public locations. In fact, their sex life took place outside their houses more often than not. Feyre lived in a house with two older sisters and Isaac lived in a house with three siblings, meaning it would be impossible to keep their situationship private if they partook in sexual activities at home.

It wasn’t that her family wouldn’t approve of what they were doing, or of Isaac; it was just that she knew they wouldn’t be happy with the whole friends-with-benefits situation. But Feyre was done dating. Yes, she was a teenage girl with hormones who needed to get sex out of her system, so she had sex — amazing sex — with someone she trusted. But a romantic relationship was completely off the table. After everything that had happened last summer, with her ex, Tamlin Primavera, Feyre Archeron had sworn that she wouldn’t date again and she intended to keep that promise.

Gwyneth Bedara was bored.

She was supposed to be spending the summer with Caitrin, her twin sister, before they headed off to separate universities in September. Unfortunately, Caitrin had gotten herself a girlfriend, who she was now spending all her time with. Gwyn had never felt more single.

How pathetic was it to spend senior summer alone?

All of Gwyn’s high school friends were busy — out of town, boyfriends, summer jobs. There was no one she was close enough to hang out with one-on-one, anyway. She shared all her friends with Caitrin, and it felt strange to interact with them without her. God, how was she going to get through four years of college without her twin?

Choosing Prythian U had felt right, but now Gwyn was doubting everything. Perhaps she should have gone to Caitrin’s choice, Estellan University, even though it hadn’t felt right for her. Or perhaps she should have picked somewhere closer to her twin.

When her phone dinged with an email notification, she opened it, grateful for the distraction from her spiraling thoughts. She let out a squeal as she read the subject line: “Early Release: Under the Purple Skies! Only at Valkyrie & co.” Her favorite author’s latest release would surely pull her out of her funk — who needed people when you had books?

Gwyn hurriedly raced around her room, grabbing the essentials and shoving them into her bag before sprinting out the door.

She peeled out of the driveway, blasting 80s music, and feeling like her summer might not be a total waste, after all.

Cassian hated his best friend’s girlfriend with a passion.

Amarantha Montague was the most selfish, stuck-up, manipulative, shallow person he had ever had the dishonor of meeting, and that was saying a lot since Cassian’s biological father had been a real piece of work.

“Babe, it’s too hot. I can’t believe you want me to die of heat stroke,” Amarantha pouted, batting her mascara-coated lashes.

Rhys sighed, turning the AC back on. “Ammie, you just said you were cold and wanted the AC off.”

“Yeah, and? Now I’m hot, okay?” Amarantha let out the fakest giggle ever. “Maybe it’s because you’re in the room, babe.” Her finger trailed across Rhysand’s arm. “I mean, look at these muscles! You could be, like, a Hemsworth or something!”

“I don’t think Hemsworths have black hair,” Azriel deadpanned. Cassian had never before been so glad to sit in the back seat with Az. The two of them were the only ones with any sense of reason in the car.

“Oh my gosh, Azzie, it was a joke, alright,” Amarantha scoffed. “God, you can be so dense sometimes, I swear.”

“Don’t call me Azzie,” Azriel grumbled. Amarantha pointedly ignored him, choosing instead to take a long, noisy sip of her Venti-sized funnel cake frappuccino (which she’d gotten Rhys to pay for, of course).

“Anyway, Rhysie baby, Ianthe told me there’s a big party she’s going to on Sunday — we totally need to go! I already have the perfect dress for the occasion. It has copper-colored glitter on it, so you’re going to need to find something to match that. Hopefully it won’t clash too badly with your eyes, but worst case you can always wear sunglasses, right? That’s the best part about summer!” Amarantha let out another vomit-inducing giggle. “I’m kidding, babe, I love your eyes. I’ll help you pick out your fit, of course, don’t worry.”

“What time is it on Sunday?” Rhys asked.

“Oh, I don’t remember exactly what Ianthe said.” Amarantha tapped a finger to her cheek. “Why, did you have plans that day? We’re going to have to spend time getting ready, anyway, so don’t think you can go and plan some date with your side hoe or something.”

“Ammie, you know I would never-” “I know, babe, I was just kidding.”

Awkward silence filled the car for a second.

Rhys cleared his throat. “I was actually planning on hanging out with Cassian and Azriel on Sunday, so I’m not sure if-”

Amarantha huffed. “Wow, fine, they can come to the party too, I guess. Just make sure they don’t act like dogs, drooling over my friends.”

“Trust me, you don’t need to worry about that,” Cassian replied.

Cassian could feel Amarantha rolling her eyes. “Oh, please. All guys are the same. I know you guys don’t mean to, but my friends are just that hot. Just… please try to control yourselves, okay?”

Azriel let out a derisive snort. “Oh, don’t worry, we’re not going to the party anyway.”

Amarantha shrugged a shoulder. It was clear that she couldn’t care less about either of them; she just wanted to show off her shiny boy toy.

“What?” Rhys’ voice was tinged with panic. “Please, guys, I need you to come to the party with me! I can’t be there all alone!”

“What do you mean, alone? I’ll be there with you, babe!” Amarantha whined.

Rhys looked into the rear view mirror with pure panic and desperation in his eyes. The plea was clear.

Cassian made eye contact with Azriel, who also nodded in defeat. It seemed they were going to go to this party after all.

Nesta Archeron generally loved her job.

Valkyrie’s & co. had surprisingly good pay, offered all employees a 25% discount on all books, and the customers were generally great.

Yet as she approached the two girls arguing in the middle of the shop who looked ready to tear each other’s hair out, she reconsidered.

“I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for ages,” the redhead declared. “I’ve read every single other book by this author.”

The other girl shrugged. “Yeah, well, so have I. And I’ve just had the shittiest day so you better not test me right now.”

The red-headed girl looked her up and down. “I bet I could take you.”

Nesta cleared her throat, interrupting whatever retort the girl with black hair was about to give. “What’s going on here?”

“There’s only one copy of Under the Purple Skies left and this lady is trying to take it even though I got here first,” the redhead said.

The other girl scoffed. “Bullshit. We got here at the same time.” Then her eyes narrowed on Nesta. “Because of the advertisement email that was sent out. Honestly, shouldn’t you guys be better prepared? I can’t believe you’re out of books already when we only got the email, like, 20 minutes ago.”

“Actually-” Nesta began, only to be interrupted by the redhead.

“She’s right. Rheya Evanora is one of the most popular authors right now, and this is her most highly anticipated book. You guys can’t just advertise that you’re selling it early and then not be prepared for people to come buy it. That’s really irresponsible.”

Nesta cleared her throat again. “We do have more copies. That one was just for the display. I’ll go grab them for you right now.”

The women at least had the humility to look embarrassed for berating her.

As Nesta handed them their books, the redhead mumbled a thank you and an apology for her previous words. The other girl looked sheepish as well. Nesta waved them off, but they still looked guilty, which was making Nesta feel uncomfortable. To clear the air, Nesta suggested,

“If you like Rheya Evanora, you should really check out Aiden Aurora’s books. They have a similar worldbuilding style, and I love the pacing and writing style in her books.”

The black-haired girl’s eyes widened. “Wait, do you read Rheya Evanora books?” Nesta raised an eyebrow. “Of course! I mean, I work in a bookstore!”

“Sorry, it’s just… besides you two, I haven’t met Rheya Evanora fans in real life before,” she explained, half-sheepishly.

“To be honest, I haven’t either,” the redhead chimed in.

“Well, there’s actually a book club that meets here each week, and next week’s book is Under the Purple Skies, so maybe you two would be interested in joining?” Nesta offered.

“Oh! Sure… are you in the book club?”

“I go occasionally, but I’ll definitely be there next week,” Nesta answered.

“See you next week, then!” the redhead said with a tentative smile, which Nesta returned.

“Sounds great!”

And just like that, Nesta’s summer got a little less lonely.

Elain Archeron was worried.

She had been dating Graysen Evans for the past three years, since they’d gotten together in the beginning of freshman year. She knew he was the love of her life and that he was the man she wanted to marry. If you’d asked her on any other day, her relationship would be what she was most secure about. Unfortunately, at the moment, it was the source of her fears.

Elain had met all the important people in Graysen’s life — his parents, siblings, cousins, friends and some of his friends’ significant others. But she hadn’t met his grandmother until today.

Elain had been fairly convinced that the other woman liked her — after all, Elain usually had no trouble appealing to parents, since she was kind and polite in public. She lived by the rules of “lady in the streets, freak in the sheets”, and that had gotten her far in life. It seemed, though, that it had failed her today.

When Elain had excused herself to go use the bathroom, she passed by the kitchen, where she overheard Graysen’s grandmother speaking to his mother.

“Elain’s is a sweet girl,” Graysen’s grandmother — grandma Greta — said.

“She really is. We’re so lucky Graysen’s dating a girl like her,” Graysen’s mother — Analise — replied.

“Yes, well, they’re still in high school aren’t they.”

“They are.”

Grandma Greta sighed. “It’s such a pity, really.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh, Ana, you know what I mean. Sweet girls… in the end you marry sweet girls, but not the ones from high school. Sweet girls are high school girlfriends, then boys go wild in university before settling down with a sweet girl later on. Graysen’s surely going to get bored of her the second they graduate. I mean, the boy’s a charmer, just like his father. He’s going to have flocks of girls coming at him.”

“Elain and Graysen have been together for a while now. I think he really likes her.”

“Bah. If they go to university apart, he’ll forget all about her the second he meets some college girl. Just watch.”

Elain couldn’t get the conversation out of her head. She and Graysen hadn’t had the conversation yet about where they were applying to schools. She had made her list of potential colleges, of course, but she knew that he was probably looking to get recruited through his basketball team. She, on the other hand, wanted to get into a school with a great botany or ecology program. They were probably considering very different universities. Elain would have been fine with that, except, after what she’d just heard, she realized that their relationship truly might not survive long distance. One or two months would be fine, but four years? If what grandma Greta said was true, every girl in college would represent a temptation for him. What if Elain went to surprise Graysen at his college and found him making out on the couch with some girl? She could already feel the embarrassment and jealousy rolling in along with the fear.

So Elain took a deep breath, took out her phone, and texted her boyfriend the dreaded three words: “Can we talk?”

an only child born to a secretary for a mother & an often unemployed father in athens , ohio in late 1996 . life for young donna was nothing out of any film you would enjoy watching . a childhood full of neglect & growing up much too fast for your own good . her father , matthew , had fallen into heavy addiction just a year before donna’s birth & her mother , denise , had learned to bury her sorrows with a bottle of alcohol . well below the poverty index there were many nights she knew she wouldn’t come home to food on the table but instead a slew of addicts getting their high in the middle of the living room , keeping the young girl up at all times of the night with their rowdy antics . 

by the time she reached third grade she’d learned that her day at school would go over much more smoothly if she made sure she had her backpack, coat & on the one off chance that there was enough food in the house pack her lunch , because if she waited for one of her parents to do it for her she’d never make it to school on time . her mom often had to rush to work in a hungover state & her father didn’t wake up until after she was already due for school , so donna had relied on the bus to get to & from school each day . 

at twelve she’d realized that she was much happier the less time she spent at home & so she did all she could to stay out with her friends . she became one of those kids you passed wondering where their parents were at that time of night as them & their friends wreaked havoc in the streets of athens . picking up smoking weed at the ripe age of thirteen , she quickly learned nothing was a better fix for how much she’d hated her life than a quick blunt . she’d fallen into a dark place at a very young age & from her perspective there was really no way out of the downward spiral she had fallen into . she blamed her parents for messing her up so badly & often when she was home it turned into blows between herself & her parents the end result always landed her at one of her friends houses for the night. 

it wasn’t until she was fifteen that she befriended a new girl whose parents took a liking to donna & really took her in . it was something like a safe haven spot for her , somewhere she always knew she could go & they’d want to hear about her day or feed her . they’re the ones who learned of donna’s wanting to join the school theater club & urged her to do so . they attended her first performance & her second, third , fourth , etc . 

one of her performances at the school garnered the attention of a screenwriter who felt she was a perfect fit for a character they were in the process of creating . this was when her first hollywood deal came , initially turning it down as she had no means to so much as leave the city of athens forget travel to an entirely different state . the screenwriter offered to take care of her completely & before she knew it she was working on the first installment of the hunger games . 

when she got back to athens after spending a few months in los angeles she’d realized just how much potential there was out in the world . at this point she decided to take things within her life a bit more seriously . there was a life outside of athens , ohio & donna was craving for it now . making the conscious decision to focus on her schooling with the hopes that she’d be able to get into a decent university . college had never been so much as thought for donna before she’d left the city but after filming a movie , she realized almost anything was possible even for someone like her . 

during this same year , her parents split up & her father got back together with his highschool sweetheart , this prompted her father to admit to donna that she had a brother who was three years older than her , who was actually in college . the two got to know one another fairly well when he’d come back home from school during breaks & the two found themselves loving the idea of having a sibling . mutually upset that they’d spent so much of their time not knowing each other so much as existed . donna lived with her father & step-mother amanda in athens & the change in her father was more than visible .  she was more than happy that her father had gotten on the straight & narrow , no matter what had to take place for it to happen & who he needed in his life for it to take place . in this time her mother moved to cincinnati & the separation actually made the relationship between donna & her mother stronger . 

in 2014 , she graduated from highschool & had committed to attending ohio state university as a theater major . during her time in columbus , ohio she & her new found friends took a liking to the downtown area where they found a hidden gem bar that often held open mic nights . this is where donna was really able to cultivate her love for stand up , despite dabbling in it a few times back in high school & whenever she was out in los angeles . she took to college well & somehow managed to juggle her education , career & social life fairly well . if you ask her how she did it , she’ll always give all the credit to her brother brody & maybe some residual credit to weed . 

in her sophomore year she’d fallen in love for the very first time , with one of the quarterbacks at her university . they dated for two years before he’d decided to transfer to lousiana state university . she understood why he did it , he had a career in football he was chasing & she couldn’t be mad at him about that . despite the long distance & at times very hectic schedules between the two of them she worked on being the most supportive girlfriend she could to him & made it out to any & every game she possibly could of his . 

after graduating from ohio state she moved down to lousiana in hopes to be with him more but her career kind of kept going & so she was nearly in louisiana just as often as she had been before moving down there. they made it work for a good amount of time , but the distance just started to become a little too much . donna is someone who craves affection after a childhood of not much affection to be sparred . she caught herself at times during the relationship on the verge of cheating , but she is a staunch believer that if you truly love someone you could never do something of that magnitude to them . it was a mutual break up , that came in the early months of 2019 . 

she’s now been living in calabasas since she moved out of louisiana & is learning to get back onto her feet without someone there to uplift her  .

on december 23rd of 2019 a sex tape with donna’s name plastered all over it had been released online . it was a sex tape of her & her ex who by this time has cemented himself as the likely first round pick in the nfl draft . the sex tape took off & it seemed as though every time her team managed to get it down , it popped up somewhere else . both donna & her ex knew neither one was to blame for the leaking of the sex tape & so they worked together to figure out who was behind it , today their getting closer & closer to finding the person who did it . despite this , the tape is still able to be viewed on the internet it you dig hard enough . although not many have to do that as it had gone vial upon it’s initial release back in december .
