The entire time I’ve seen Saber’s Realta Nua dress, I’ve been looking at it and thinking it looks like a night gown—like Rin’s kitty pajamas but a cute dress with nothing but some ruffles and ribbons to pretty it up so it’s not plain. She’s also barefooted as seen in the figure of her Realta Nua dress, plus her hair is finally down—usual aspects of one being at home/sleepwear). I had found this to be such a weird design considering the intricate details in both her armor, as Alter, and the dress beneath the armor. (Listen if what I’m about to say has already been addressed by Takeuchi I wouldn’t know. I uh haven’t looked up much Saber information.)
But thinking about it, like…that’s the entire point. Maybe it is meant to be a nightgown type of dress because after fighting so hard for an ideal, for seeking the Grail not in one war but two, and always fighting on the front lines, and leading an entire country to glory and to ruin, she can finally rest. She can finally dream—the ending of Fate Route has her tell Bedivere she had a wonderful dream so it makes perfect sense that her dress would be something reminiscent of someone sleeping because her time with Shirou was a wonderful dream.
At the same time, it’s not an insanely elaborate dress. It’s a simple one, pretty, but relatively simple—because finally after taking up the sword and becoming King, and losing her humanity, she doesn’t need to be that anymore. Bedivere discards the sword that symbolizes her Kinghood. She’s now just a normal girl. She doesn’t need jewelry, lace, anything fancy—she’s finally human. She finally gets to be not a knight or a king or a leader, but a person who Shirou gets to see at the end of his life, and finally be together with.

There's a sentiment I've seen with certain long-running franchises of late, and it's the idea that if something is "too big," it's "harder to get into." Which perplexes me, particularly when they are franchises like Fate (mainly composed of AU spinoffs) or Cosmere (a fantasy multiverse whose multiversal implications have only really been starting to explicitly land in the last 3 or so books).
So my advice to you, hypothetical person facing this exact problem, is to just pick up one of the early entries that launched the franchise and see if it vibes with you.
Don't treat it as a first entry into a massive series, read it and judge it based on its own merits. If it vibes with you? Great, theres more where that came from. If it doesn't? Thats fine too, you can move on with your life, having confirmed that "big franchise you were interested in" was not For You.

I'm FGO's biggest hater so you know I'm serious when I say this all began with FGO releasing in English in 2017. No longer could Type-Moon bury their heads in the sand and pretend an international audience for their visual novels didn't exist, not when JAlter sales alone made 3 million dollars.
Anyway, it's actually really cool that we can see Nasu go back and decide an actual intended reading order for Type-Moon works. Mahoyo was written first but never released to the public, Kara No Kyoukai sold like 6 copies on its first release so nobody read it, while Tsukihime and even the original Fate/Stay Night would stay out of mainstream store fronts due to being eroge, leading to readers coming in to Type-Moon almost entirely through (often troubled) adaptations and never the source material.
But it doesn't have to be like that anymore. Mahoyo got remade in 2012 as a VN, Fate/Stay Night got rereleased as a mainstream commercial work on the PS2 with Realta Nua, and Tsukihime got a Remake for consoles.
So it's pretty cool that Nasu used the first official English (and Simplified Chinese, they're an even bigger market tbh) translations of his novels to make something of an actual reading order.
Do you want to get into Type-Moon? Read Witch on the Holy Night, it's simple, has no routes or choices, and lays all the basic foundations of the setting. Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon then elaborates on the monsters and the militaristic Holy Church that Mahoyo introduced. Finally, Fate/Stay Night rounds this out by going back to the mages, getting deeper into their society and while introducing a whole other kind of monster in the heroic spirits that became so iconic to the entire otakusphere.
It doesn't have to be hard and inaccessible anymore! We're so fucking back

Here’s what you’re gonna do. You’re gonna go on nyaa and download Fate/stay night [Realta Nua]. Not the original release, not mobile, make sure it’s Realta Nua. Then you’re gonna head on over to Beast’s Lair and get the Ultimate Edition patch which includes many quality of life improvements and HD art assets. While you’re at Beast’s Lair you’ll want to make sure you pick up the new retranslations of the Fate and Unlimited Blade Works routes. You got that? The old translation is fine, but not great. You’ll want the retranslation. Heaven’s Feel isn’t out yet but we can probably expect it next year. When that’s all done, you’re gonna sit down and enjoy peak fiction.

What is Fate/Stay Night?
Fate/Stay Night is a visual novel that came out in 2004. It features three routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel. It is also the first installment of the Fate serie.
If you are familiar with that serie (and if you follow me I think I can safely bet you do,) it's the one game all the other games keep referencing.
If you are not familiar with that serie, it's the game this blonde anime chick you can see everywhere since 2005 is from.

Oooh nifty. What's it about?
The story follows SHIROU EMIYA, a perfectly ordinary teenager with small magic abilities, as he gets dragged in a mage battle royale where the winner gets to fulfill one of their wish. During that battle royale, mages are aided by Heroic Spirits, aka historical and/or mythological figures as summons to fight. As you can imagine, the question of what makes a hero? is a major one in the story, along with What makes a villain? What makes a victim? How does one uphold their ideals?
Cool. Should I play it?
Well that depends on what you're looking for in a story, but if you enjoy strong thematic writing, balls to the wall concepts, and commitment to any worldbuilding implications (be they really silly or deeply horrifying) then yeah you should def go for it! Also, as a visual novel, it is extremely well-made and it fucks with the medium in ways I have rarely seen before.
I'm already familiar with other Fate games and I know the tl;dr of the plot. Do I really need to play it?
Yeah you should!! As I said in the intro, every Fate entry out there references fsn in some way, be in directly by making references to plot elements, or indirectly by echoing and building on its themes. Trust me no amount of knowing what would happen could have prepared me from actually reading it.
Isn't it a porn game?
The original is an eroge, yes, so it did contain sex scenes. The remake, Fate/Stay Night: Realta Nua, replaced the sex scenes with sfw ones. I can give you my personal opinion on which version of these scenes is best if you need me but really it's up to you as to which one you'd rather read.
I tried playing the game a while back but I thought the protag was a cunt.
Yeah I getcha the first route is a bit clumsy by today's standards and it's easy to read the protagonist as a bitchy chauvinist at first. Still he gets better (and in fact never acts even remotely like that in the other routes) so I would ask you to grind your teeth and keep going.
"The first route"? Is there an order to the routes?
There is! In the original game you had to go Fate route -> UBW route -> HF route. Iirc you can play them in any order in the remake, but I strongly advise you to play these routes in this order regardless, because they were very much built with the assumption that this is the way you'd experience things. (A very basic exemple is that the Fate route has a lot more explanations on the worldbuilding and the rules of the battle royales, while the other routes assume you already know this shit and ellipses it up.)
Ohhh. Ok I'm kinda interested. Where can I play it?
Well funny story! This game is like, the ONE fate game that never got any official release in the West whatsoever! So you're gonna have to go with fantranslations. You can play the sfw remake over here, or you can download the og eroge over there.
I'm gonna be real with you bestie I am not committing to a 70 hours-long vn when I don't even know if I'll like it.
Understandable! Perhaps you'd be interested in the anime adaptation of one of the routes then? I'm told the Unlimited Blade Works anime is a good introduction to the Fate serie, its vibes, and therefore whether it might be your thing or not. That being said disclaimer that I have not watched it (<- not an anime watcher) so I can't personally back it up.
Hey why are there like twenty versions of that blonde anime chick
That would require me to make a separate 2k long post king.
Anyways.

what is the best starting point for fate? and what are like, the essentials?
Fate/stay night, the visual novel, is the absolute best starting point. it's free (read: you can't buy it, so it's fine to download) and it's a great experience. Fate/stay night and Fate/hollow ataraxia are the two VNs, but even then, you only really need the original F/sn to have a complete and meaningful experience
F/sn is structured as three stories, meant to be read sequentially: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel
the best version currently available is Realta Nua Ultimate Edition, a fan patch that gives you the most up to date version of the game while still allowing you to choose between the censored and uncensored versions
I personally recommend uncensored for Heaven's Feel, if nothing else
