The Enigmatic Grimalkin: Unveiling the Esoteric Significance of a Feline Figurine
Tumblr media
Have you ever heard of the word "grimalkin"? This word, which is not commonly used today, has a long and fascinating history in the English language. In this blog post, we will explore the origins of grimalkin, its usage in literature, its etymology, and its figurative and literal definitions.
History and Usage:
Grimalkin is an old-fashioned term for a female cat, especially an old or ill-tempered one. The word is not often used in modern English, but it has a long history of use in literature, particularly in poetry and folklore.
For example, in Shakespeare's "Macbeth," one of the witches refers to her familiar, a cat named Graymalkin. Similarly, in the English nursery rhyme "Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat," the titular feline is sometimes called a "grimalkin." Other notable uses of the term include Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" and Beatrix Potter's "The Tale of Ginger and Pickles."
Etymology:
The etymology of grimalkin is somewhat unclear, but it is believed to come from two words in Middle English: "grim," meaning fierce or cruel, and "malkin," a diminutive form of the name "Mary." The latter is thought to have been a common name for female cats in the Middle Ages, possibly due to the association of cats with the Virgin Mary.
Figurative and Literal Definitions:
In addition to its literal definition as an old or ill-tempered female cat, grimalkin has taken on several figurative meanings over the years. It can be used to describe a woman who is old, ugly, or unpleasant, particularly in appearance or demeanor. For example, "Mrs. Norris was a grimalkin of a woman, with a sour expression and a sharp tongue."
Grimalkin can also be used to describe a person who is cunning, sly, or sneaky, particularly in a negative sense. This usage is often associated with the idea of a witch's familiar, a supernatural being in the form of a cat that helps a witch carry out her magic.
In conclusion, the word grimalkin is a fascinating example of how language can evolve over time. While it is not commonly used today, it has a rich history in literature and folklore, and its figurative meanings continue to resonate with modern audiences. Whether referring to a cantankerous old cat or a shrewd and crafty person, grimalkin remains a powerful and evocative term in the English language.

Let Us Go Together
Tumblr media
It had always been tough, because the light that I saw every morning when I woke up, was too bright. I wanted to go there, by myself alone. The light was my last goal to become a human being, a respectable person, and a hero for my family. I didn’t need anyone else to be my travel company. I felt so powerful by being on my own feet, my own will, my own desire. So far, I survived by not using someone else’s sources. I believe that it’s my fate to be chosen to complete the task for my family’s sake.
One day after waking up from my longest slumber, I saw someone’s silhouette from afar. He was standing still while reading a huge blue book. That was a quiet eye-catchy book considering how vivid the blue color was. I looked at him, full of curiosity. He was so fine, yet cold and somehow unreachable. He had an intimidating yet inviting vibe which smeared through his hooded eyes. Behind those glasses, I could see him talking softly at me by his gaze. I admitted my defeat and tried to be closer to him. I reached the apple tree where he was standing for so long. He was looking at me getting closer to him, as if he's been waiting for me under the tree.
“What are you reading?” I asked.
“Future diary.” He answered calmly.
“Whose diary?”
“For now, it’s no one's.”
“Yeah, whatever.” I looked at his emotionless face. I should have been annoyed at this point, but I wasn’t. He showed almost no expression on his face, but I could see that he enjoyed our conversation. Both his gesture and manner were so calm and somehow addicting, I wanted to see more, explore more of him.
From this distance, I could see the unmatched outfit of his. He was wearing a thick jacket with a pair of jeans, and it’s summer.
“I guess you’re not from around here.”
“I am your neighbor.” He said.
“Okay, but it’s quite hot to wear a jacket tho.”
“I know, I am about to go somewhere.”
“Yeah? Oh, alright, have a safe trip then.”
“Let’s go. You’re coming here to join me right?”
“Uhh…it depends. Where is your destination?”
He closed the book and pointed to the light where it should be my destination.
“Do you know where it is?” I asked.
“I don’t. Thus, I need your help.”
I bite my lips, hesitating about what to answer. I was supposed to go alone though. It had been my goal since I was little.
“Just because you think you can, doesn’t mean that you have to go alone.” He said.
“I am doing fine so far.”
“I can see that. However, you need me too.” He reached into his left pocket and gave me one of his compass.
“This thing will lead us together to the light, we will not be separated and miss each other along our adventure. Obstacles will always be in everyone’s journey, including ours. We might stumble upon big rocks and deep valleys, but don’t worry, it will be fun and memorable.”
I accepted the compass. It looked more like a jewel than just a compass. It shone prettily and was bluish-gray colored with the touch of silver for each N, E, S, W direction. I really loved it.
“Thank you, I’ll treasure it.”
