This is so beautiful I thought it was a Bible verse for a second.

The wind howled. Lightning stabbed at the earth erratically, like an inefficient assassin. Thunder rolled back and forth across the dark, rain-lashed hills.
The night was as black as the inside of a cat. It was the kind of night, you could believe, on which gods moved men as though they were pawns on the chessboard of fate. In the middle of this elemental storm a fire gleamed among the dripping furze bushes like the madness in a weasel's eye. It illuminated three hunched figures. As the cauldron bubbled an eldritch voice shrieked: "When shall we three meet again?"
There was a pause.
Finally another voice said, in far more ordinary tones: "Well, I can do next Thursday."

My favorite made-up similes
Nervous as a tap dancer in a mine field.
The dark sky was studded with stars like the diamonds on a rich woman's neck.
Her cheeks burned like a sunbathing vampire.
The trees clinked like so many wind chimes as the breeze knocked their ice covered boughs together.
The city was a true beast. Skyscrapers clawed at the sky and roads twisted amongst the buildings like the blood vessels of the monster. Cars whooshed past on the street like steady breaths,
Her head went fuzzy like an old TV losing signal.
The damaged ceiling groaned like it had eaten too much taco bell.
The thought flashed through her mind like the imprint of lightning on the eyes.
Her ribs shrieked like an irate peacock at the movement.
And lastly! A not-actually-a-simile
She was filled with enough anxiety to kill a cow.
^ not sure what that is but it makes me laugh^

Top-heavy was the ship, as a dinnerless student with all Aristotle in his head.
(Melville, Moby-Dick)
That is quite the simile.

Would it be hypocritical to use a simile to describe how much I fucking hate similes

The like poem
I fell down the stairs yesterday, and it hurt like hell. Nothing was broken, so it felt like good luck after all. You reprimanded me in a tone that sounded like my mother. I responded in like kind. Then we went to bed and slept like strangers with our backs turned to each other. That felt like some reconciliation was needed. And that like happened the next morning, when we both felt like it had all been…

Hadn't she used that simile before? So what? Homer used his stock images over and over. Get obsessed with novelty and you ended up with a wardrobe full of lovely clothes you could never wear again.

Tossed Salad
O Metaphor, where art thou?
clinging to some barren branch somewhere,
a tiny blackbird lost after the storm or some
other usage of the elemental force of wind that
so often finds its way into these things because
what is more compelling than a thing you cannot
see but does so much damage, tumbling houses,
trees, and dubious attempts at literature
as a grenade might a house of cards or
some other sad and obvious device sitting
upon the counter—a cork-screw, an egg-slicer,
or those small and colorful scoops, each with
a different capacity, to ensure precision baking,
conveniently nested within each other like
Russian dolls, but since an ounce of technique
is worth a pound of effort, let us decide
what you get when you mix an adage with
a comparison whose presence runs contrary
to any useful illumination but begs for
inclusion like the neighbor’s cat
pawing at the door.
