✨️ New up on the shop! Hand-crafted jewelry straight from the Philippines and 3 copies of the newly published English translation of the oldest Bikolano dictionary, "Vocabulario de la Lengua Bicol" by Marcos de Lisboa. Once these 3 available copies are sold out, I will be taking pre-orders for more copies.
Also, a few more books have been added to the shop! Most are restock of some books including "Song of the Babaylan" which has been highly requested and I currently have 6 copies of.
For all those who bought pre-ordered books from late May to early June, the books are currently in the process of being shipped from the Philippines this week and should all arrive via DHL by early next week. Shipping will start to take place in the first week of July.

Got new books!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is exciting for me bc my eye condition had prevented me from having enough confidence to read physical books in a while so I'm excited to get back into things.
The first book, Cabinet of Curiosities, takes a look at Philippine artifacts and explain the history and context behind them, while the second, the Aswang inquiry, is I would say a baby's first Aswang guide that has some basic facts about them, their kinds, and how to spot, avoid, and cure them and it's a quick read too.
The art for the Aswang inquiry is very unique and pretty cool imo. I could post a bit of it later but I don't think I could do image IDs for it :'D

Really loved the eloquent Cebuano and English words chosen for "Si Kalipay" by Christina Newhard, translated by Jona Branzuela Bering, and illustrated by Happy Garaje. Didn't know that Tiktik was Cebuano for Manananggal (Tagalog), a spirit that can disconnect with its lower body, fly around, and has a long tongue. Makes for a great book for anyone wanting to learn about the mystical creatures that lurk, or guard, from the shadows. A bit more in my latest blog post: https://filipeanut.art/si-kalipay-ug-ang-kinagamyang-tiktik-by-christina-newhard/

WIKATHON CATCH-UP
Hey I have been planning since 2017 to join a readathon but I was unable to jumpstart my book blog then and so the readathon plan was also pushed back every year. If you’re unfamiliar with it, a readathon (reading marathon) is a type of event where you will read as many books as you can within a specified timeframe. A readathon often has prompts as a guide for reading according to the theme.…

Had the Filipino Christmas Desert exchange of my dreams with everyone bringing something from Mayumu or The Dusky Kitchen (the author's blog Abi Balingit)
We had kare kare cookies with bagoon paste (my favorite), pineapple upside down guava muffins and I made Ube Marbled Tahini Cookies (but used black sesame paste)
Everything was so good!! I so love savory deserts and I am dying to try Abi's Adobo cookies next!

New books on food, dance, and history.
Pangasinan 1901-1986 by Rosario Mendoza Cortes will help me appreciate the towns we pass by on bus rides through the province. Prof. Ceasar F. Nimor’s “Sinug” sheds light on the different types of dances in Cebu and nearby islands that may have influenced today’s Sinulog.
And because I love kinilaw, I finally got Alegre’s and Fernandez’s “Kinilaw”. It goes over the diverse dishes “cooked” in vinegar, which I wonder now if it is possibly the “original adobo.”
You can get “Sinug” from Casa Gorordo Museum and “Kinilaw” from Libreria Filipiniana online. But nothing beats visiting our precious few bookshops for hard-to-find books. Visit Popular Bookstore for “Pangasinan” and hundreds of other titles ranging from history to art to food, and more.
I just made a shortlist of book reviews I made. It isn't much, but you can see the budding list here.
