do you ever think about how fucked up some (most) family trees are in the silm (and lotr especially since it's a remnant) like.
finarfin is celeborn's father in law, and elladan, elrohir, and arwen's great-grandfather. the twins who do nothing all day but hunt orcs endangering the royal family (you go kids! die young and/or lose a hand and/or get tortured by orcs and/or by your own kin and/or), can claim that fëanor is their great-great-uncle or something? and wouldn't he be PROUD, and wouldn't he remember that their grandfather is eärendil, and how he's also, somehow, in addition to great-great-uncle, their adopted great-grandfather through his sons?
like. I don't think someone else but elladan, elrohir, and arwen could claim that family tree. fëanor, fingolfin, and finarfin, by either adoption or blood, or both.
and it only gets worse with aragorn and arwen's children, I mean, but I refuse to fry my brain further

Thank you to @thescrapwitch for tagging me in a wip game! Have another snippet of the hopefully forthcoming "Raise Them Well (Or Out of Spite)" follow up. (My AU in which Feanaro and Nerdanel end up having to raise Nolofinwe.)
. . .
“We can change his mind,” Maitimo said. “One vase off the mezzanine next to your head, and there won’t be any question of leaving you alone.”
The nursery - for lack of a better word, that was still what they called it - was quiet, but not too quiet. He could hear the soft sounds of Makaluare and Tyelkormo breathing as they slept.
The sound was further away than it had once been. Since the room had already needed renovations after Melkor knocked a wall out, hanno had ordered that wall repaired and a different one removed to expand the room and allow them all more space.
The little ones, of course, slept near the far wall, as far as possible from both door and window. Just in case.
Farther than it had once been, when Makaluare was still an infant who cried if he was set somewhere he could not see at least one family member. He had never tolerated the crib long; as soon as his parents vanished out the door, his breath would start to hitch until Maitimo rescued him from its bars and settled with him on his own bed, carefully cradling his brother to his chest.
Farther than it had once been. Still close enough to hear.
They might not be for long.
He did not, directly, respond to Maitimo’s offer to pretend to attempt to murder him. “Did you know he didn’t like her?” he asked, staring up at the ceiling.
It felt like such a small word for an emotion so strong that it would drive hanno to leave him.
Maitimo was silent a little too long. “I wondered,” he said at last. “From some of the things we heard.”
It had been we, Nolofinwe admitted to himself. He had heard the rumors too. He just hadn’t credited them.
They had been surprised hanno looked after him. That was why he had given them no credence. They had been surprised while Nolo had felt the blazing fire of his brother’s fea wrapped protectively around his; they had been surprised while it had been the most natural thing in the world.
And so he had thought the rumors as much nonsense as so many other things.
Yet they had been right. They had been right about that, so had they been right about -
“Don’t push anything off the mezzanine,” he said, turning in the bed to face the wall. “It’s probably best I stay.”
. . .
I'm never good at the tagging people part of this, so if you want to participate, consider yourself tagged!

Re-reading the Silmarillion and I don't know how I missed the bit about the light of the two trees mingling during Fëanor and Fingolfin's reconciliation. Had to rough this up to get it out of my head

Fingolfin during Dagor Bragollach also called the Battle of the Sudden Flame. A horrible event that ended the siedge of Angband and resulted in Noldor elves being slaughtered by Morgoth forces by the thousands.

Someone mishearing the name of Galadriel’s husband and being convinced she is married to Celegorm.
Options for this include:
Fingolfin - as a letter from Doriath is smudged in just the right place. This misunderstanding helps to contribute significantly to his decision to get crushed by Morgoth’s boot.
Caranthir - he ignores most of the going’s on from his siblings and would really like to know less about the supposed marriage of his hated cousin and least favourite brother. May they make each other miserable together. Doesn’t find out the truth until Doriath.
Angrod - he is torn between brotherly loyalty and loyalty to one who is his friend. He isn’t sure which one to feel sorry for and is Very Relieved when Finrod clears up the misunderstanding.
Finarfin - garbled rumours from across the seas. Is absolutely horrified and thinks it is yet another rebellion by his daughter. Doesn’t find out until he sees Galadriel again in Beleriand, where his first words upon greeting Celeborn are ‘thank the Valar you aren’t my nephew’
Sauron - attempts to torment Galadriel about the loss and downfall of her husband. Is very confused when she tells him that he is alive and well and that Sauron has had dinner with him! He does not recall dining with any of Feanor’s sons. He just knows that somewhere Celebrimbor’s ghost is laughing at him.
All of the above.

Fingon is the archetypical hero. He does great deeds of valor and daring, notably Maedhros’ rescue and rushing out to defeat Glaurung. He is not terribly afraid of consequences, which is wonderful when he is the only one he’s responsible for. His talent is forging ahead and inspiring everyone to follow him.
Fingolfin is the archetypical king. He is the one that holds his people together across the Helcaraxë and brokers peace with Maedhros after he’s rescued. He’s incredibly aware of every possible consequence, which is wonderful when he’s responsible for a whole kingdom. His talent is uniting everyone and inspiring them to move forward together.
When Fingolfin dies, he acts as the hero, not the king. He tries to borrow his son’s talent for incredibly inadvisable stunts, but it isn’t in his nature. He believes the Noldor are doomed, and thus dies in despair fighting Morgoth because he does not see another path forward, only defeat.
When Fingon dies, he acts as the king, not the hero. He tries to borrow his father’s talent for forging political unity, but it isn’t in his nature. The Nirnaeth’s forces are disunited from their conception to their defeat, and Fingon dies full of hope fighting Morgoth because he does not see any other path forward, only victory.
Fingolfin’s legacy was despair, though he left a lasting blow against Morgoth. Fingon’s legacy was hope, though he did not so much as touch Morgoth.

Daily reminder that it happened twice for someone to be compared to Oromë while riding into battle. The first one was Fingolfin. The second one was Théoden.
Fingolfin, burning with so much rage, Beleriand ablaze, his nephews dead, eyes so bright and inhuman and otherwordly that he gets mistaken for a Vala. And he challenged Morgoth to a fight, and wounded him seven times, and scarred him for the rest of eternity, and orcs made no boast about that duel, and no songs were sung about it, for the sorrow was too deep.
And Théoden. Just. Théoden. Whose mind was poisoned, whose son was dead, and the world was falling apart around him, but who would not stand down and would not give up. And the armies of Rohan came, the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them.
Something about Fingolfin riding out to challenge Morgoth in wrath and despair, raging at the world and nothing going as it should be — something about Théoden riding out in wrath and hope, because there is a better future and he will be damned if he doesn't do everything in his power to lead the world to it.

So I had a thought.
Like we all know Elrond is a great healer, the best in middle earth but what if...
What if when someone said that Elrond is a healer, they meant he is a healer like Fëanor is a smith, like Maglor is a singer, like Earendil is a mainer, like Maedhros is a warlord, like Fingon is valiant, like Fingolfin is a warrior, like Celegrom is a hunter.
So let's then throw Elrond into Valinor and let everyone there discover that fact. Let everyone discover another genius among geniuses that the House of Finwë has spawned on them all.

It was my birthday today, so I used that as an excuse to try making a Fingolfin cake! There's a few things I wish I did differently but overall I'm pretty happy with it and it was fun :)
