Season 18 Spoilers Masterlist (episode by episode)
Pre-production April 24 - May 13, 2024
Shot between May 14 - August 28, 2024 Hiatus June 29 - July 7, 2024
Season 18 premieres Fall 2024
OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT, SO YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I will update this post with all the new info we get.
The success of a family run ranch in the foothills of Alberta isn’t guaranteed even in the best of times, but when Season 18 begins Heartland’s future has never been more precarious. With new competition from a neighbouring ranch, and a drought threatening the health of the herd, the only solution is for the Bartlett-Fleming family to buckle down and adapt like never before. Amy’s work with horses continues to be her focus, but when she unexpectedly finds her heart pulled in two different directions, she’ll be forced to make a difficult decision. Lou will be more involved than ever in the family cattle business, often putting her at odds with Jack and Tim. But when it matters most, the entire family will come together and prove that no adversity is too great when you’re united. It will take courage, resolve, and strength of character to overcome the challenges ahead. In other words, it’ll take true grit.

To celebrate Science Fiction Day, which is today on January 2nd, 2023, we asked DPP contributors to recommend us their favorite science fiction that they read in 2022! And we got some really awesome answers… (all spelling/grammar is sic the original recommender)
The Red Scholar’s Wake by Aliette de Bodard. D. V. Morse’s recommendation: “lesbian pirates in space with lots of Vietnamese culture throughout. And so much more I want to say that I keep deleting because spoilers.”
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. Cap’s recommendation: “a ‘motley crew/found family on a perilous journey’ story that centers queer, poly, and otherwise non-traditional characters and relationships. Book 1 of a Hugo-winning series, female author.”
The Testing (The Testing Trilogy) by Joelle Charbonneau. Annabeth Lynch’s recommendation: “I absolutely loved it and I never see people talk about it. It’s distopian sci-fi.”
Threadbare (Storm Fronts Series) by Elle E. Ire. boneturtle’s recommendation: “an action-packed futuristic scifi story featuring ruthless mercenary and cyborg Vick, whom no one (including herself) believes is human, and her lover and handler Kelly, the only person who trusts her implicitly. A simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking lesbian romance that confronts the nature of love and humanity, and what it means to be the hero when you feel like the villain.”
Firebreak by Nicole Kornher-Stace. Adrian Harley’s recommendation: “one of my favorite books I read this year. It’s got a fun adventure setup about a VR gamer who starts discovering the truth behind the star NPCs of the VR game, PLUS the most chillingly plausible dystopia I’ve ever read, bar none, PLUS an aro/ace protagonist and a central platonic relationship.”
The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal. Dei Walker’s recommendation: “it’s The Thin Man in SPAAAACE with a heroine with chronic pain, a really deftly handled non-gender-binary selection of characters, and queer.”
Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell. alec’s recommendation (without comment).
Scythe by Neal Shusterman. nottesilhouette’s recommendation: “the whole series has queer characters in it though the first book is really focused on like 5 people that are all kinda straight. and I am queer, and I like it.”
Global Examination by Mu Su Li. Nina Waters’s recommendation: “queer semi-dystopian vaguely sci-fi manhua shenanigans!”
The Martian by Andy Weir. Rascal Hartley’s recommendation: “not queer, but definitely one of my absolute favorite reads.”
What were YOUR favorite science fiction reads of 2022? We’d love to hear about them!

firebreak spoilers under the cut
he died with his head on her shoulder like he'd fallen asleep on the bus. i don't know how i'm ever supposed to be normal again after that
and in the context of firebreak it's gut-wrenching, but in the context of archivist wasp/latchkey 22's death reads like a warm hug. i'd been thinking he'd died alone after losing the only person he really trusted. but he died with his side pressed against someone who thought she loved him before she even knew him, who did love him in the little time she got to know him, who gave everything she had to help him.
and it wasn't enough. it never could have been enough to do anything but borrow more time. and that's the tragedy, right? but it was something. it was more than i'd assumed he'd gotten. it was more than he expected to get. it was something he thanked her for.
and then in archivist wasp/latchkey, he's lost that. he doesn't remember his death. he doesn't remember mal. and all over again it's back to gut-wrenching and i'm literally nauseous over these characters in the best way possible

Palisade 22 spoilers under the cut
I don’t really like the Stellar Combuster as a plot device. Game over buttons don’t do it for me, they destroy stakes rather than raise them for me. The idea that any wrong move could End The Season bothers me bc I’m not interested in stories about places destroyed by individual actors like the Stargrave without discussing them more deeply.
However, I understand the impulse. This is a callback to C/W and Rigour, to TM and Volition. The panic of the powerful that they can’t stop something they consider an existential threat, only create a firebreak as they destroy everything around it. This is what empires do, senseless destruction on incomprehensible scale for “self preservation” . Empire doesn’t care about what I want, and it will liberally use the worst tools in its tool belt. I am however fascinated with the concept of this Stargrave.
Elia Elcessor, an unstable general who collects vintage camera, making snapshot decisions. What brought you to this high rank? Why were you chosen? How would you respond to a theater appearing at Tintagel? Is there anyone on planet who could talk you down? Who did you love, who did you owe your fealty to in your heart of hearts? Was it the princept, the principality, your own image of the world as it should be?
I don’t know, I’m not very excited to see where this “b plot” goes. I would have preferred if they went for the person, so I could understand the component parts of her villainy. Still, the tension is incredible, and I hope the mech crew all become magical girls (especially midnight matinee and popcorn, they deserve it)

🌻 Sunny Reading Tag 🌻
Thank you so much for the tag @booktheraepy!
🥞 favourite book:
All time: so hard to pick, but it’s gotta go to Lady Knight by Tamora Pierce
Current: again, really hard to pick, but The Hourglass Throne by KD Edwards absolutely wrecked me and is still sitting in my top spot for the year
🌾 tropes that make you go “asfgrthgj”:
Found family, idiots in love (mutual pining), and I can’t think of any others right now 😅
🌻 comfort book:
WebMage by Kelly McCullough, I’ve read this book so many times that the spine is barely holding the book together anymore.
🌙 death in a book you would take back:
Spoiler alert for Firebreak by Nicole Kornher-Stace, I would take back the death of 22. I was sobbing through the whole end of the book because of what happened.
💡 book you wish you could read again for the first time:
On A Sunbeam by Tillie Walden
Therapy Game by Meguru Hinohara
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
And so many more books that I wish I could reread for the first time.
I’m gonna tag: @appleinducedsleep @bookishfreedom @themelodyofspring @sleepyreads @therefugeofbooks @ninja-muse and anyone who would like to do this tag! 😊

I mean I gotta ask Firebreak even if that answer's obvious, but also how about Conulata, I love me some purples and pearlcatchers! (if you want to feel free to send an ask back but you don't have to <3)
(doing this ask thing!)
Firebreak my beloved. He has a whole bunch in his bio already, but god. I have. Oh god.
Tumblr media
...I have plenty to choose from. Hhhere's one!
Vlaštovky (Swallows) by Traband! LONG POST AHEAD OH GOD. I might've. I might've translated the song for the purposes of this post. uuuuh. it's not a poetic translation but the Meaning should be there
youtube
Každé jaro z velké dáli vlaštovky k nám přilétaly, někdy až dovnitř do stavení Pod střechou se uhnízdily a lidé, kteří uvnitř žili, rozuměli jejich švitoření
Every spring from far away swallows flew to our place, sometimes all the way into our house. They made a nest under the roof and the people that lived inside understood their chirping [note: "švitoření" is a specific type of chirping, most often used with swallows afaik! it's not a very often used word]
O dalekých krajích, hlubokých mořích, divokých řekách, o vysokých horách, které je nutné přelétnout, o nebeských stezkách, zářících hvězdách, o cestách domů, o korunách stromů, kde je možné odpočinout
About far away lands, deep seas, wild rivers, about tall mountains that need to be flown over, about sky paths, shining stars, ways home, about treetops where you can rest.
Jsme z míst, která jsme zabydlili, z hnízd, která jsme opustili, z cest, které končí na břehu Jsme z lidí i všech bytostí, jsme z krve, z masa, z kostí, jsme ze vzpomínek, snů a příběhů
We're from places where we've settled, from nests we've left, from paths that end on a shore. We're from humans and all creatures, we're from blood, from flesh, from bones, we're from memories, dreams and stories.
Jsme jako ti ptáci, z papíru draci, létáme v mracích a pak se vracíme zpátky tam, kde připoutaní jsme Jsme lidské bytosti z masa a kostí, jsme jenom hosti na tomhle světě - přicházíme, odcházíme
We're like the birds, paper kites, we fly through the clouds and then we go back where we're bound to. We're human beings from flesh and bone, we're just guests on this world - we come, we leave.
A chceme mít jisto, že někde místo, že někde je hnízdo, odkud jsme přišli a kam zas potom půjdeme spát, že někde je domov, že někde je hnízdo, útulno čisto, že někde je někdo, kdo čeká na nás, na návrat
And we want to be sure, that somewhere there's a place, somewhere there's a nest, where we came from and where we'll fo to sleep again, that somewhere there's home, somewhere there's a nest, cozy and clean, that somewhere there's someone, who's waiting for us, for our return.
Tam v dalekých krajích, v hlubokých mořích, v divokých řekách, ve vysokých horách, které je nutné přelétnout Tam v nebeských stezkách, v zářících hvězdách, na cestách domů, v korunách stromů, kde je možné odpočinout
There in the faraway lands, in deep seas, in wild rivers, in tall mountains, that need to be flown over, There in the sky paths, in shininig stars, on ways home, in treetops, where you can rest.
[end song lyrics + translation]
OKAY! Okay. This song radiates a very specific kind of homesickness. Wanting to just have a place where you can feel at home with other people and that's. Yeah.
Both Firebreak and his non-dragon counterpart are stuck in less than ideal circumstances that mean they can't really go back to where their home was. And they miss it. But they're learning to make a little home of where they are, with others and it's.
Yeah. :")
obligatory honorary mention for. pretty obvious reasons wheeze
...I'll probably do conulata later, this post is long already haha

TAG  Firebreak
Spoilers follow.
Well, that was a real thrill of an episode!!
I loved the way that there was so much model work and physical effects.  It really did give a feel of the original series - and shows Weta’s work at its finest.
Seeing the Crablogger again was a treat and we got the whole feel of how massive and heavy it is - just like we did when we first ever saw it.
I liked that they pulled out the fire suopressant soundwaves, and the suporession grenades as well.   But I feel that they missed a perfect opportunity to break out the Firefly as well.  We saw the bulldozer pod from Tunnels of Time, but yeah,
Firefly would have been good to see.
I was very very surprised that the teaser released was not actually in the episode - we picked up immediately wher the teaser ended off.  It was a really unusual thing to do and I rather liked it!  We got the setup, and had the whole episode for the rescue,
I hope that this pacing stays for the last few episodes of the series.
The end foreshadowing about the Chaos crew was rather heavy handed I thought.
BUT - I think it was a great episode and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Spoilers for firebreak
Ok, I LOVED that episode, it officially takes the number 1 spot for my favorite Thunderbird episode, we get to know about scott being a rescue scout and virgil shows off his strength. Also scott smiled so much in this episode, the most for all three seasons. He was so proud of henry and bee. And now hopefully in the next episode the boys go off to save jeff. And the chaos crew are plotting something and loved how gordon saved virgil. True brotherly bond

I finished the main story line last night. Still have more stuff to do, but as I'm exploring I have thoughts about possibilities for next game based on some datapoints from this game...
Horizon Forbidden West spoilers below. You have been warned.
Okay so there's the datapoint Past Silver that you find in San Francisco, yeah? Two people using an instant messenger of some sort, I guess, talking about Vast Silver. One of them thinks VS wasn't actually captured and I'm honestly inclined to agree. This data point hints that VS might show up at some point in the next game, maybe. Especially since fan theories for HFW brought up VS a lot and it's a viable narrative path, imo.
I just stumbled across the data point Pack Your Holobags! near the Restless Weald Sunken Cavern and it mentions Wyoming, Montana, Europe, and China as possible destinations for two people communicating through some kind of instant messenger.
Clues point to the Quen being from east Asia, likely the Pearl River Delta area of China. Check.
Wyoming and Montana are close enough to the current gameplay setting to be viable locations for game 3... Or, alternatively, are callbacks to the Frozen Wilds DLC since The Cut is supposed to be in Wyoming... suggesting that China will be this game's DLC?
This location stuff is such a half baked connection that it's barely even worth pointing out, but my brain is STUCK on it.
ANYWAY
Then the spouse goes "WAIT A MINUTE. GAIA told us that Elysium went offline well before the planned 100 year operation period. Just -bloop- GONE, off the radar. What if.... what if Vast Silver was fleeing the Faro Plague swarm and retreated to Elysium? And just... took over, like Minerva did to the Regional Control Center?"
😮
Elysium's location has never been revealed to us soooo maybe Wyoming or Montana? To use the geothermal energy to power it like Firebreak and Thebes?? It would also be geographically close enough to where the Zero Dawn team was working for a quick evacuation once their work was done and they needed to move to Elysium. GAIA said it's unlikely CYAN would respond to any further contact attempts after what happened with Hephaestus, so maybe we need to go talk to CYAN to find Elysium...?
And what if VS kept the people in Elysium alive and grew very fond/protective of them? A foil to Nemesis who burns with hatred for the Zeniths?
I am dying, DYING for more Horizon.
