Uldren Sov, The Guardian (part 2)
notes: this is my (unfinished) version of how Uldren became a guardian, based off his initial resurrection in the Destiny 2 game back in 2018. this was written before Crow showed up in the game, so his personality is of my own creation (aka more like normal Uldren LOL). this was also before Glint was in the game, so he’s also my own creation, based off the single lore entry we had of him at the time. this story also takes place within my personal Destiny story starring my fireteam, the Misfits.
a brief backstory: the main guardian of this story is my self-insert. she was resurrected shortly before the Red War and experienced those events from the perspective of the main guardian in the game. her official class is a Warlock (Dawnblade main babyyyy🔥), but she can utilize powers and techniques from all classes. after the Red War, she forms a fireteam with two other guardians named Matt and Rocky, who experienced the events of the main guardian in the first Destiny game. she also eventually develops a romantic relationship with Cayde-6. another guardian named Isaac - who was part of the Misfits during the events of the first game, but perma-died shortly before the battle with Oryx - eventually rejoins the team after being brought back via time travel with the help of Osiris (I came up with this idea waaaaay before the thing with Saint haha). the events of Forsaken play out as is in the game, but Cayde is later brought back to life, along with Sundance, after the events of the Last Wish raid. Cayde is no longer the Hunter Vanguard and prefers to live as a simple guardian and honorary member of the Misfits.

Part 1
______________________________________________________________
The journey to Earth took much shorter than Uldren thought it would. On the way, he’d leaned his chair back and propped his feet up in an attempt to get a small nap before arriving, but when all was said and done, the flight took only about ten minutes total to reach the planet. Uldren thought maybe it was much closer to the Reef than he originally thought, but Pulled Pork was quick to correct him by saying it was simply the hyperdrive capabilities of the ship that allowed them to travel so fast.
When the planet finally came into view, Uldren was shocked at the size of it. “I thought it would be… larger. Is this really where all the guardians live?”
“Most of them, yes,” Pulled Pork answered. “As well as all of the normal humans. Some non-guardian Exos and Awoken live there as well.”
“Exos? What are those?”
“Robotic humanoids that were created by the Clovis Bray company before the Collapse. They possess fully human minds and tendencies, but within a robot body.”
“So humans, Awoken, and the Exos… interesting…”
“Oh, and the Fallen as well.”
“Fallen?”
“Arachnid-like Creatures from another world that came to Earth when the Traveler arrived. They constantly seek the Light, which is why they’re at constant wars with the guardians.”
Uldren’s head was starting to spin from all this new information. Before, he could barely get any answers out of anybody. Now it seemed he couldn’t get his little partner to shut up.
“Speaking of the Traveler,” Pulled Pork continued. “Do you see it? The floating white orb hovering over that portion of land there?”
Uldren looked closer and sure enough, there was a large white sphere planted directly above one of the portions of land. It looked small from where they were at, but Uldren knew it was massive in comparison to the land below.
“That’s where we need to go,” Pulled Pork still continued. “The Last City is there, directly under the Traveler’s watch.”
“I… had no idea it was that close to the rest of humanity.” Knowing that the very thing that had granted Uldren his powers in the first place would be constantly over him at all times both comforted and terrified him.
As they got closer to the planet, Uldren’s mind began to race with thoughts of what might happen once they reached the city. What sort of people lived there? And how many of them were there? Would the other guardians accept him as one of them? What would happen if they didn’t? Would he even care?
Once again, Pulled Pork brought his guardian back into reality. “Looks like we finally arrived!”
The clouds parted in front of the ship and revealed what one could only assume was the Last City. However, the sight in front of them was… underwhelming. The destruction caused by the Red War was all too visible, and the city looked more like a demolition zone than a place to live.
“This is the home of the guardians?” Uldren exclaimed with disgust. “What a dump!”
“Hmm, looks like a lot has changed since I was last here,” Pulled Pork added. “The Tower used to be much taller than that… something must’ve happened while I was on my search for you.”
“Obviously…”
“Nevertheless, we should still find a place to land. The Tower’s usually where Guardians first go when they come to the Last City.”
“Then that’s where we’re not going.”
Pulled Pork looked at his guardian in confusion. “Did I not explain everything correctly? You seem to have a hard time understanding me. I’ll say it again—“
“No, I heard you,” Uldren interjected. “And don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll make our way up there eventually, but for now, I’m more interested in what’s going on down there in the city itself.”
In actuality, Uldren had realized that going to the Tower in someone else’s ship might not be the best idea, especially considering how much trouble he was in already. But he wasn’t about to tell his Ghost that.
“Alright then,” Pulled Pork said. “As long as we get the ship back to the Tower somehow. I’m sure Miss Hannah will be coming to take it back soon.”
At that statement, Uldren quickly prepared the ship for landing, making sure to find a place that was inconspicuous and out of normal sight. He decided to land on the outskirts of the city, among some of the remaining wreckage and debris from the Red War. Once on the ground, he hopped out of the ship and stood on top of it to get a good look around. There were no people nearby as far as he could see, but there were signs of activity further into the city. Nearly every building surrounding them had been damaged in some manner, some of them having been destroyed completely. It wasn’t clear to an outsider what exactly had happened, but looking at it all gave Uldren a sense of dread and remorse. The thought of all the lives that were clearly lost here was devastating. Nonetheless, Uldren kept up his stoic demeanor and began to make his way further into the city.
“How many other guardians do you think we’ll see here?” Uldren asked his Ghost.
“Probably none,” Pulled Pork answered.
“None?” Uldren scoffed. “Are you being facetious?”
“I am not. Guardians rarely come to the city, especially this far out. We’ll probably stick out a lot.”
Uldren threw his hands in the air. “Well that would’ve been nice to know before landing here!” He took a deep breath. “It’s fine, we’ll be fine. I’ll just try to… blend in.” The thought made him visibly cringe.
As he made his way past the wrecked buildings, Uldren made note of where the ship was parked in relation to his own location in case he needed a quick getaway. The way his day had gone so far, he needed to expect the worst. It also gave him something to occupy his mind with since the scenery was less than uplifting.
One area near a collapsed building appeared to have been turned into a makeshift graveyard, with several crude memorials set up throughout the area. Uldren looked over the graveyard solemnly. “So many lives lost… taken by a clearly senseless act of violence… I can’t help but pity them.”
Pulled Pork phased out and floated over Uldren’s shoulder. “This city was built to protect the rest of humanity. It’s supposed to be the safest place on Earth. That’s why the Guardians live here, up in the Tower. They’re humanity’s protectors.”
Uldren’s hands curled into fists. “Well clearly they need to do a better job.” He couldn’t even look at the graves anymore and kept his head hung low.
“Then I guess it’s a good thing you’re here to help, Guardian!”
Uldren couldn’t help but scoff. “Right. Like I’m going to make a difference about any of this.” He turned to leave, but stopped after noticing a bundle of flowers on one of the graves had come apart. One of the flowers lay near his feet, and he picked it up and looked it over before taking it over to the rest of the bundle. Carefully, he arranged the flowers onto the grave in such a way that the wind couldn’t knock it over again.
“Yes, Guardian,” Pulled Pork said as he watched Uldren tend to another one of the graves’ flower arrangements. “I believe you will make a difference.”
After leaving the graveyard, there was a period of complete silence. Their visit to the graveyard had left Uldren in a solemn mood, and Pulled Pork thought it best to let his guardian alone for a bit. The silence didn’t last long though, as the sounds of hustle and bustle slowly began to erupt from the alleyways as they walked further into the city. The buildings around them were less damaged than the others, so it was assumable that they were entering an inhabited area.
“Alright, make yourself scarce, friend,” Uldren told Pulled Pork. “Let’s not come across as superior to these people.” The little Ghost obliged and phased back into Uldren’s body.
It became all too apparent that Uldren’s idea of trying to “blend in” may not work as well as he’d hoped after seeing the type of people in the city. His apparel alone made him stick out like a sore thumb, not to mention that there didn’t seem to be any other Awoken in sight. The former prince was bound and determined to make a good impression on these people though. After screwing up with Hannah, he had to do better this time.
“Here goes nothing,” he said with a sigh.
At first, no one seemed to pay much attention to Uldren as he strode confidently down the streets. A few people gave him odd looks, but he thought nothing of it. He kept his cool and smiled back at anyone that met his eyes. It was actually going much better than he originally thought. But then again, literally nothing could be worse than what happened between him and Hannah.
He had to admit though, he almost missed the excitement. The people of the city were busy, no doubt, but their tasks seemed… mundane compared to the adventures he’d had so far. The most exciting thing he came across was a man getting bent out of shape because two boys had knocked over his precious fruit stand. It was an amusing sight, but Uldren found himself feeling more led to help the man clean up his mess rather than stare and laugh at him. Of course, the man pointed out that it was unusual for an Awoken to be wandering the streets, much less one dressed so fancy. But Uldren laughed it off and told the man not to think too hard on it and just be glad most of his produce survived the wreckage.
It ended up becoming a running pattern for Uldren to go out of his way and assist the people as he made his way through the city. He hadn’t intended on doing anything of the sort, but there were too many instances where he came across people needing assistance and couldn’t help himself. A couple of men carrying a heavy load that could definitely use another set of hands. A woman’s hat that had been blown away by the wind and caught before flying into a puddle of mud. A group of children that had gotten their ball stuck on a roof and needed someone to fetch it for them. A pigeon whose wing had gotten caught on a wire fence and required a rescue. Helping other people was apparently in Uldren’s nature, which made Pulled Pork beyond ecstatic.
“You see, Guardian?” The little Ghost told his partner once they were alone. “I told you that you were fit for this life. I made the right choice.”
As the two sat on top of one of the roofs, looking down at the hordes of people below, Uldren couldn’t help but feel a bit somber. “I’m not disagreeing with you but… is this all there is to it? And if these people found out what I am, would they treat me the same way? I haven’t even met any other guardians yet outside of that demon woman. I just…” He sighed and pulled his knees up to his chest, resting his chin on top of them. “I wish I knew what I was doing. I feel so… lost here.”
Before Pulled Pork could respond, there was the sound of an aircraft flying overheard. The wind whipped up and rustled Uldren’s hair as he looked up to view the aircraft. He recognized it. It was the same one Petra had flown in on back at the Dreaming City.
“Oh crap…”
Uldren didn’t waste another second and quickly leaped off of the building and onto the ground below. A few people standing nearby gasped in shock, and Uldren hastily apologized to them before scurrying off further into the city.
“We need a plan,” he told his Ghost.
“For what?” Pulled Pork asked.
“For dealing with that devil woman!” Uldren no longer cared about hiding his powers and began leaping over boxes and barrels as he ran.
“Oh! Then we should head towards the Tower,” Pulled Pork replied. “Someone there should be able to help us.”
“That would be wonderful if I knew how to get there from here!” A woman pushing a cart of fruit nearly knocked into him as he spoke, but he dodged it effortlessly, causing several impressed onlookers to applaud. Uldren gave a quick bow to them before continuing his run.
“You could just... ask for directions?” Pulled Pork suggested.
Uldren chortled. “Yeah, don’t think that’s happening.” He stopped to briefly look around and pointed at a nearby building. “There we go,” he said before running towards the building at full speed. Once he was close enough, he jumped with all his might and climbed his way up to the roof. The aircraft was nowhere to be seen, so it was assumed that Hannah had landed somewhere, possibly nearby. Uldren could see the Tower in the distance. It looked so far away.
“I just had to explore the far ends of the city,” he lamented with a sigh.
“Guardian, what will you do if Miss Hannah finds us?” Pulled Pork asked.
“Honestly, I don’t even want to think about that,” Uldren answered. “At this point, I’m considering just finding a place to hide for a while.” He tapped his chin in thought. “Or maybe at least hide in plain sight for a while…”
“Your invisibility powers can only last for so long,” Pulled Pork pointed out.
Uldren peeked down at the streets below. “There are other ways of hiding in plain sight, my friend. It just occurred to me that any one of these civilians could be a guardian in disguise. I think it might be time for a little wardrobe change…”
Once again, the former prince leaped off the roof and onto the ground below, spooking yet another set of people nearby. He again apologized and began to look around for anything that might aid in his quest for anonymity. Covering his face was top priority, but outside of sticking a bucket on his head, nothing stood out to him.
Eventually, he came across an outdoor restaurant, or at least it looked like a restaurant. There were several tables and chairs set up for people to sit at, and everyone there had some sort of food or drink. At one of the tables sat a pair of humans, who were dressed a bit differently than the others. A gun sat propped up behind one of the chairs, and the other had a gun strapped to their hip. More importantly, both of them had face-covering helmets sitting on the ground next to them. An almost evil looking smile crept up on Uldren’s face.
Pulled Pork could tell just by the look on Uldren’s face what he was planning. “You know, stealing is bad.”
“Don’t think of it as stealing,” Uldren reassured his little friend. “Think of it as… borrowing for the sake of survival.”
Without another word, Uldren cloaked himself with his invisibility powers and began to sneak over to the table. The two people sitting there were completely focused on their conversation with each other; they probably wouldn’t have even noticed Uldren sneaking up to them if he hadn’t been cloaked. Still, he quietly crept over to them and grabbed one of the helmets inconspicuously. As he turned to leave though, someone walking past bumped one of his feet and nearby stumbled over. Uldren grunted softly from the impact, and the person who hit his foot looked around to see what they had nearly tripped on. As they looked around in confusion, Uldren quickly scurried away, leaving the person even more confused as they watched a single helmet float off and disappear without a trace.
Once he was in the clear, Uldren breathed a sigh of relief and uncloaked himself. He waved the helmet in front of his own face triumphantly. “Another successful endeavor.” He gave the helmet a quick toss into the air before putting it on. It was a little snug, but he could see perfectly out of it.  “What do you think?” he asked his Ghost.
Pulled Pork floated out, looked his guardian over and said, “This’ll definitely help you hide your identity.”
Uldren huffed. “I meant about how it looked on me…”
Pulled Pork ignored the comment and said, “I’m not sure it’ll be enough though.”
“What?” Uldren put his hands on his hips. “What do you mean?”
The little Ghost floated around Uldren once over. “Your face is covered, but the rest of your outfit is a bit, ahh... flashy. Your pants stand out like a Vex Mind at a birthday party.”
He hated to admit it, but Pulled Pork was right. His outfit was rather flamboyant and would certainly be recognized by their pursuer. Uldren thought it over for a moment, tapping his chin in thought. When an idea finally came to him, he snapped his fingers and laughed.
“Oh, that’s brilliant,” he said to himself.
Pulled Pork watched Uldren detach the poncho from his neck, shake it around a bit, and start to tie the poncho around his waist inside-out. The poncho was just large enough to cover all the visible red parts of Uldren’s pants. It looked almost like a plain black skirt now, but Pulled Pork didn’t want to say anything about it.
“There we go!” Uldren twirled around and posed with his arms stretched out. “Pretty clever, right??”
Pulled Pork was silent for a moment. If Ghosts could cry, this would be one of those instances. “Oh, I definitely picked the best guardian ever…”
After that, the two headed off once again, keeping their course continually directed towards the Tower. Every once in a while, Uldren would hop onto one of the rooftops to get a better view and chart out their next route. He would also look around for any signs of unusual activity, mainly for the sake of making sure Hannah wasn’t nearby.
Time passed, and although he knew they were making progress, Uldren felt like he wasn’t getting any closer to the Tower. Every time he looked up, it seemed just as far away as it had been 10, 20, 30 minutes ago. He was getting bored, and that lonely feeling was beginning to sink in once again. Pulled Pork did what he could to reassure his guardian that they would be at the Tower soon, and that he would be making loads of friends once they got there.
“How can you know they’ll even accept me once we get there?” Uldren confided in his little partner during one of their rooftop stops. “Or that they’ll even like me?”
Pulled Pork thought for a moment. “I like you,” he finally said. Uldren couldn’t help but laugh.
“Also,” Pulled Pork continued. “These people, especially the ones you helped along the way, seem to like you too.”
Uldren peered down at the streets below. It was getting later in the day, but the streets were still plenty busy. Something about the hustle and bustle comforted him, or maybe it was just Pulled Pork’s words getting to him. Either way, Uldren was feeling more confident about the whole thing and patted his Ghost affectionately. “Where would I be without you, my little friend?”
“In the Dreaming City, lying in the mountains, dead.”
A hardy laugh erupted out of Uldren’s throat. “Well, you’re not wrong!” He extended a hand towards Pulled Pork, and the little Ghost floated towards him, phasing into Uldren’s body once he was close enough. A quick adjustment of his helmet, and Uldren was ready to head back down into the streets to continue their journey to the Tower. He was feeling more and more confident already.
That is, until he heard a familiar voice.
“You’re sure you haven’t seen him?” the voice exclaimed.
“No,” a man behind a fruit stand replied. Another man came up and asked, “Who’s she looking for?” The first man replied to him, “Some new guardian apparently.”
The familiar voice of the woman spoke again, this time at the man who had just shown up. “An Awoken man, my height, long black hair swept to the side, dressed in gaudy clothes that look like they’re made out of the hide of a War Beast.”
Uldren, who had quickly hidden behind a large crate once he’d heard the voice, audibly chuffed at the comment about his clothes.
“Sorry Miss Hero,” the second man said. “Haven’t seen anyone like that.”
The fruit stand man bapped the other man on the arm and said, “She’s got a name, dummy. Good grief.”
“Right, uhh, it’s Hannah, right? Sorry again.”
Hannah gave the man a fake smile, and Ghost thanked them for their time before the two continued their search. Of course, by this time, Uldren had bolted it out of there and was well down at the end of the street before Hannah had even finished her conversation with the two men. But she didn’t know that. All she knew was she was getting closer to finding him. She could feel it.
As Uldren was running down the street, he kept looking back to make sure Hannah was nowhere close. She was spending most of her time asking around about him, so it gave Uldren an opportunity to put some more distance between him and Hannah. He thought about taking to the rooftops again, but knew it would be too risky since he’d be right out in the open. It was beginning to seem like there would never truly be any escape from that mad woman. She was too good, too persistent. Uldren was both impressed and utterly terrified.
Pulled Pork took a moment to let his guardian know that it was probably safe to stop running now, but Uldren didn’t believe him. “I’m not stopping until we get there,” he said.
“But we don’t even know where we’re headed!” Pulled Pork pointed out.
Uldren skidded to a stop. In all the rush, he’d completely gotten turned around and had no idea which way he was headed. And with the threat of Hannah on the horizon, hopping to the rooftops was still too risky. He began to panic.
“Now don’t worry,” Pulled Pork started. “I’m sure that—“
But he was cut off by Uldren hurrying off again in a frenzy. His panic was getting the better of him and it showed. No longer was he flawlessly hopping over objects in his path. In fact, he knocked over more things than avoided them. Dodging was becoming difficult, and he nearly plowed down several people crossing his path. Sweat condensed inside of his helmet and began constricting his vision. Everything started to blur in front of him. He could barely tell the people from the structures anymore. And was Pulled Pork saying something to him? Something about a hole? Or was it a mole?
THUNK!
Nope. A pole. It was definitely a pole.
There was an audible gasp as Uldren’s body fell backwards onto the ground. Several people began to gather around him and see if he was ok, but Uldren couldn’t see any of them. The knock to his head had blurred his vision even more, except now everything was spinning. He could barely register what anyone was saying to him either.
Eventually, he could start to make out certain images and saw the crowd begin to part. He heard the voice of someone say, “Alright everyone, back up, give the guy some space, come on, this isn’t a shooting demonstration or something.” A single figure was walking up to Uldren. They appeared to be shooing away the other people as they got closer to him. The figure crouched down next to Uldren and laughed. Their voice was masculine and… slightly metallic sounding?
“Geez, some people, huh? Someone just sneezes the wrong way, and they go ballistic. Although, I have to admit, that was a pretty spectacular crash you had there, buddy.”
Uldren blinked and shook his head to try and clear his vision. Finally, he began to see the person crouching next to him come into view. To his great surprise, the person was… a robot. A male robot, Uldren assumed from the voice he’d heard earlier. He was humanoid and moved exactly like all the other people there. His face was painted blue with black and silver details, and his mouth glowed blue whenever he talked, the same color as his glowing blue eyes. A black horn protruded from his silver forehead. Also, he appeared to be wearing some sort of dark colored hood and cloak with red details on it. Uldren was completely fascinated by him.
“You good to go, or do you need another minute?” The robot man asked as he extended a hand towards Uldren.
Uldren looked at the hand for a moment curiously before giving his own hand in response. The robot man helped him onto his feet and held onto one of Uldren’s shoulders to help support him.
“There we go! Just shake it off! Like nothing ever happened!” He took a good look over Uldren. “Wow, that is some getup you’ve got there, buddy. Not from around here, are you?”
Uldren shook his head in response. “Just got here a little while ago, actually.”
“Ahh! A newbie! A ripe little kinderguardian!” The robot man clapped his hands in excitement. He couldn’t see it, but Uldren was raising his eyebrow at him.
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, that’s just something we like to call the new guardians around here,” The robot man said, patting Uldren on the back. “You are a guardian, right? I just assumed from the clothes and everything, and I’m gonna feel reeeeeal stupid if I’m wrong so please tell me I’m not wrong.”
Uldren chuckled. “Yes, I’m a guardian.”
“I knew it!” The robot man pumped his fist in the air triumphantly. “Now what class are you? Oh wait wait! Don’t tell me! I can guess that too!” He began to look Uldren over again, this time more thoroughly. “Youuuuu aaaaaaare aaaaaaaaa… Warlock! Yes? Cause of the skirt? Oh no wait, or is that supposed to be a Titan mark?”
Uldren stared at him for a moment in silence. “I have literally no idea what any of that is that you just said.”
As the robot man scratched his head in confusion, Pulled Pork phased out to clear things up. “Actually, he’s a Nightstalker, therefore making him a Hunter class.”
The robot man smacked his own head. “Duh! Of course! I should’ve known by the complete mish-mash of styles you’ve got going on here. Only true Hunters dress this ridiculously. Good on ya for getting that part down, newbie.”
Uldren just let out a loud sigh in response.
“You’re a fancy little guy, aren’t ya?” The robot man said to Pulled Pork. “You seem familiar though. Have we met?”
“Yes, Mr. Six,” Pulled Pork responded.
The robot man let out a hardy laugh. “Mr. Six? Really? Oh wow, ok, yeah, I remember you now. You’re that Ghost that was always scanning trash piles and stuff for your guardian, right? What is it everyone was calling you? Ham Hock? Pork Rind? Porky Pig?”
“Pulled Pork,” Uldren muttered grudgingly.
“Right!” The robot man exclaimed, snapping his fingers. “Good ol’ Pulled Pork!  How’ve you been, buddy?”
“Just fine, thanks for asking!” Pulled Pork replied. “Things have been especially great since I found my guardian earlier today.”
“I imagine so! Good for you! No more searching through trash piles! I mean, unless you’re into that or whatever.”
Uldren crossed his arms and shook his head as the other two continued to converse with each other. Something about this robot man was… off-putting, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Still, the fact that Pulled Pork was familiar with him was reassuring, and he was already much more welcoming than Hannah had been earlier. Who knew, maybe this robot man would turn out to be his first friend here in the City.
“So, the Dreaming City, huh?” The robot man said after Pulled Pork informed him of where they had come from. “Geez, that must’ve been some trip for you, little guy!” He patted Pulled Pork on the top of his shell. “And you, Mr. uhhhh…” He gestured to Uldren. “You got a name yet, kid?”
Uldren shook his head in response. “I mean, I’ve been called several names today already, but I’d rather not have them as my permanent name…”
“Oh, I bet!” The robot man said with a laugh. “The way you were runnin’ around earlier, I’m surprised ya didn’t get name-called outta the City for being so reckless!”  He began laughing at his own quip, and Uldren fake laughed along with him to amuse him.
“Well!” The robot man exclaimed, clapping his hands together. “Looks like it’s up to me to show ya around now!” He leaned in closer to Uldren’s face. “Normally my buddy Matt will show the new Guardians around the place, but haha, he’s not here right now so I get to do it! Oh man, this is exciting.” He rubbed his hands together excitedly.
Uldren chuckled nervously. “Oh, well, I mean, I guess, if you’ve got nothing better to do…” He took a quick look around to see if he could spot Hannah anywhere. “I uhh, was actually on my way to the Tower, so if you could get me there as soon as possible, that would be—“
“No problem!” The robot man playfully smacked Uldren on the back, causing him to audibly grunt out loud. “Lucky for you, I was just headin’ back there! I’ve been hangin’ out here in the City, waiting for my partner to get back from a trip, but I’m pretty sure I saw her ship fly in earlier, so back to the Tower I go!” He turned on his heels and began to walk in the opposite direction, beckoning for Uldren to follow. “Just stick close to me kid, I’ll get you to the Tower in no time.”
Without hesitation, Uldren immediately began to follow. “Excellent! Thank you, uhh… Mr. Six, was it?”
The robot man snorted. “Yeah no, don’t ever call me that again. Name’s Cayde. Former Hunter Vanguard, lover of ramen, and friend to all the chickens in the solar system, at your service.” He turned and bowed dramatically before continuing on his walk.
“Former?” Pulled Pork inquired. “Oh no, did someone take your place while I was gone? I thought that was only possible under certain conditions!”
“Nah, no one wants to take over the dang position, and I haven’t taken it back myself cause… well, it’s kind of a long story.”
“Well then,” Uldren said as he caught up with Cayde. “I suppose it’s a good thing we still have a ways to the Tower, yes?”
“Ohhh, I don’t wanna bore you with stories of my misfortunes.” Cayde waved his hand carelessly. “I got waaaaaaaaay better stories to tell than that one anyway, trust me.”
“Then by all means,” Uldren said with a grand gesture of his hands. “Feel free to tell. You have a captive audience, after all.”
Cayde gave Uldren a surprised look. He had never really met a person up to that point who was not only willing to listen to his stories, but was actually interested in hearing them to boot. This new guardian was certainly an odd one but… Cayde was starting to like him. After all, he had taken a full-on reckless blow to the face, a truly noteworthy Hunter trait that he appreciated. As he placed a hand on Uldren’s shoulder and looked him directly in the face, he said, “Kid… you and me are gonna make great friends after today.”
Friends. The word rang in Uldren’s ears like a chorus of birds singing. Nobody could see it, but underneath the helmet, Uldren wore the biggest smile he’d had on his face all day.
It took about a half hour for the two to make their way out of the City, but Uldren didn’t even notice how much time had passed. He was completely enamored by Cayde’s outrageous stories. Whether or not they were actually true, Uldren didn’t care. Simply the thought of such things being possible was enough to entertain Uldren’s view of what Guardians were truly capable of. And not only that, but Uldren was beginning to feel somewhat of a kindred spirit with Cayde the more they conversed. Cayde was apparently feeling it too, as he made a point to happily exclaim every time Uldren commented on how “cool” or “amazing” Cayde’s stories were. He wondered out loud why it had taken so long for the Traveler to finally grant him a friend he got along so well with.
“I guess we both just got lucky today,” Uldren replied with a shrug. “Or maybe it’s just, what is it called…. delayed gratification?”
Cayde shuddered. “Ugh, no, I hate that, never say that again, it’s not welcome here.”
“Oh, I feel you buddy,” Uldren said as he slung an arm across Cayde’s shoulders.

4 - "Could you not be a show-off while we're trying to stay alive!"
(Set in the Silver timeline)
Cobalt Team were among the highest-performing Spartan teams. They had been hardened into a cohesive unit since they were six years old, and it showed. Ice water ran through their veins. They were efficient, they were precise, and they were deadly. Unfortunately, even the best of the best had bad days.
This was a bad day.
They'd been scouting ahead for an extraction detail - yet another in a long list of embarrassingly meaningless tasks ever since Silver Team had dropped the ball and made the entire SPARTAN program a liability in the eyes of the Powers That Be. For this particular mission, Silver Team was even sent along. No one knew why not one but two Spartan fireteams had been assigned babysitting duty, but then... they weren't the type to question orders. They'd leave that to John and his band of misfit toys.
Cobalt had just split off to check a new NAV marker when they came under fire. It took only a matter of seconds for the grizzled soldiers to realize that they were well and truly surrounded - and in deep trouble to boot.
"Elite, nine o'clock," Cobalt's leader, Val-015 called out stoically. He put a three-round burst into the towering alien's center-mass. Its shields flared brightly, then cracked. Yaz-112 put a single round from her DMR through the creature's skull, its dark blue innards spraying outward in a fine mist.
Val shifted his aim. "Cobalt Three, half a dozen jackals creeping up the right flank."
"I see them, I see them!" Karim-002 barked. He distracted the vaguely avian creatures with a few burst from his battle rifle before lobbing an M9 fragmentation grenade over top of their shields. A second and a half later, their angry squawks were silenced permanently.
Cobalt were good at what they did. Quick. Efficient. Deadly.
As Val consulted the dozens of incoming enemy contacts on his motion tracker, it suddenly dawned on him that it wouldn't be enough.
"Where's Silver when you need them?" Karim asked no on in particular as he knocked down a trio of Grunts with a few well-placed shots. "John's always around to act like he's the be-all end-all of hardcore soldiers, but when you actually need him? Something better always-"
Whatever Cobalt Three had been about to say was lost in the violent report of a Condor's chin-gun. The dense foliage around the fireteam erupted into shrapnel and neon-colored plumes of blood as the UNSC dropship rose seemingly from nowhere and began to burn down the encroaching enemies.
The carpet-fire was enough to give Cobalt a brief reprieve - and then the Condor was spinning around, its gangplank hanging open and waiting to receive them. Karim groaned audibly when he recognized John-117 standing on the lowered ramp, one arm outstretched heroically.
"Come on!" the Spartans' squad leader bellowed, firing an M6 into the woods.
Cobalt scrambled onto the Condor, both Val and Yaz allowing the Chief to help them aboard. Karim stiffly refused the other Spartan's help, opting to fling himself into the hovering dropship under his own power.
Once the troop bay was sealed tight and they were headed back to their carrier, John made his way to Karim's side.
"Are you injured, Spartan?" he asked, his voice surprisingly gentle for the man who had become so synonymous with warcraft that the UNSC had all but painted him as their mascot.
"I'm fine," Karim snapped. Then he sighed heavily, staring at his boots. Finally he lifted his eyes to glare at John's visor. "Just... could you not be a show-off while the rest of us are trying to survive?"
John stared at him in silence, the small twitch of his head the only indication that Karim's annoyed request had any effect on him. "Sorry," he finally said, his tone heavy-laden. "I'll try not to in the future."
From the cockpit, Vannak-134 and Riz-028 laughed loudly.
13 - "I would rather be kissing you right now."
The UNSC Infinity was the greatest warship the UNSC had ever constructed. She was sleek, she was fast, and she was just as powerful as the most impressive weaponry the Covenant had ever managed to bring to bear.
Not the least impressive attribute of the Infinity was her Spartan Deck. S-Deck, as it was known by the ship's crew, was stocked with enough Brokkr System machines and training materials to keep an entire company of Spartans happy... and Blue Team was certainly taking advantage of that.
Kelly-087 in particular was enjoying herself immensely. With the Infinity's 'War Games' simulator, the fastest of all Spartans had finally found herself a worthy challenger: a training relay that combined all of the thrill of a life-and-death combat scenario with all of the competitive triumph of being able to run simulations over and over again until her need for perfection was finally satisfied.
"This is incredible," Kelly said excitedly between rounds. Blue Team had just sent Fireteam Boxer to the showers, thoroughly humiliated with their poor showing against the veteran Spartans. Next up on the chopping block was Grindstone. She couldn't wait to rub the upstarts' faces in her own squad's superiority.
"I couldn't imagine a better way to spend our day," she continued, jabbering excitedly. "Teaching these kids how real Spartans operate, only to line them up and knock them back down the very next day."
Although Blue Team held immense respect for the Spartan-IVs, it was undeniable that they all got a very real sense of satisfaction from knocking down the younger generation down a few pegs from time to time. While John and Linda smirked and nodded their concurrence, Kelly noticed that Fred merely cocked his head to one side curiously, and said nothing.
Curious herself, the Spartan leaned closer to the man. "Something wrong?" she asked quietly enough that only he could hear, studying his expression. They were close - close enough for her to feel the heat radiating off his unhelmeted head and to count the flecks of blue pockmarking the green of his eyes. Close enough that she could smell his breath, still minty from his toothpaste, and could see each tick and shift in his familiar face.
Fred glanced over at her and grinned, dimples forming small valleys in his cheeks. "Not a thing, Rabbit," he said with a twinkle in his eye that he seemed to reserve only for her, in moments like these when no one else would notice. "I was just thinking that there's at least one thing I could be persuaded to do instead of this."
Kelly shot back a grin of her own, raising her eyebrows in surprise. "And what might that be, LT?" she prodded.
"Nothing too important," Fred answered, his smile slowly transitioning into a smirk. "But I'd rather be kissing you right now."
With that, the Spartan slid his helmet back into place. "Time's up," he called out, turning his back on Kelly and slinging an MA5D over his shoulder. "Grindstone's waiting for us to show them up yet again... I'd hate to disappoint."
Kelly watched him confidently march away, her jaw dropping open ever-so-slightly in shock. Then, mustering all of her will-power, she closed her mouth with a click of her teeth and resolved to focus on the upcoming simulation. It wouldn't do her any favors to waltz in unprepared. But, she promised herself, she was definitely going to take Fred up on that offer.
Sooner than later.

Vanillin Planifolia, Reaper Retiree
The legendary hitwoman herself, involuntarily retired through subterfuge and explosives but given unlife as a Reaper thanks to her job giving her sway over enough Dominant Souls to become a Reaper. Also, Creme's mother, who the Cinderace feels obligated to live up to despite that being Vanillin's major regret, to saddle her daughter with a nigh-impossible legacy over her head. While according to arcane rules she cannot show herself to her own daughter (though it's highly implied that she does this out of shame and the Ghost Rules were made up as a means of coping), she still manages to cross paths with Creme's employers through Vanillin's squad of misfit Reapers, Fireteam G.R.I.M.. Of the Teammates not in Team Dark, only Sammy has met Vanillin, his forgetfulness being the sole reason Vanillin feels comfortable talking to him. Nominally a training group for the reapers Chirin, Luka, and Nervous, Vanillin's operation acts more akin to a laid-back detective agency, one that's signed off by "the higher ups" of the Reaper Corps.

//: Seeing as it's been a long while since I've logged in here, let me make a quickly condensed summery of the blog for anyone new following and anyone who just might need a refresher/update ~
Hi, I'm Fear and welcome to my Destiny blog. The main muse found here is Mardöll. - Raised in the Dark Ages - Atypical Risen - Ran with the Takanome Rangers - Declined becoming an Iron Lord - Veteran of the Wars predating Saint's Crusade - Accused of Murdering her Fireteam during Saint-14's Crusade - Driven mad by an Ahamkara that lives in the depths of Lake Geneva in Switzerland and took the name Ezra / The Ram - Guardian/Ghost Killer, has a bounty out on her but most avoid it (see pinned post) - Raised an orphaned Aksis until he was old enough to rejoin House of Devils - Raises an Eliksni House of her own called House of Dread made up of outcasts, misfits, exiles and House-less Fallen - Joined Skolas and Wolf House, was given the name Hatiaksis - Imprisoned in the Prison of Elders at the end of House of Wolves and was released by her birth father - Returned to Earth and knows a small measure of peace during the Taken King, assimilating any willing remains of Wolf house into hers - Intercepts communications from the Tower and City that mention House of Devils and Aksis Prime, concerned for her son she travels to Old Russia where part of him recognizes and acknowledges her as his mother and keeps his Splicers from assimilating her. She successfully wards off Guardian invasions on her son as long as she can but when she realizes he can not be saved she kills him herself and resorts to murdering not only Guardians in the area but other SIVA riddled Devils - She assimilates the remains of Devil House with hers - Is found innocent of her crimes after Red War and becomes the Speaker by not so gentle pressure of Ikora and others - After ups and mostly downs in the Last City combined with revelations behind not only her First Death but the details surrounding her mother's death she snaps and goes to the Reef to murder Mara Sov and become Queen of the Reef There is a B U N C H more but this will do for now xD I haven't quite decided how she would deal with Eramis or House of Light etc And, of course, not everything aligns with Cannon Lore. I can and do line her up with Cannon as much/as best as I can when and as needed - the beauty of her is she's flexible enough to accommodate other's differing Cannons and even Cannon itself.
I do have other minor muses: A handfull of main Eliksni from Dread, Aksis, Skolas (who is a whole blog of his own minimal activity), Mithrax (has a whole ass blog to himself as well minimal activity) as well as some other Guardians. At some point I hope to have Skolas and Mithrax back up and the other muses listed but for now I'm focusing on getting Mardöll/Ezra sorted out ~
Feel free to ask questions, pop plot ideas, asks or starter requests! I'm excited to be back and I'd love to get things rolling again <3

Expunged- Part I
The radio crackled in Chao's ship as he flew toward the location of the distress signal at light speed, he could just barely make out what it was saying but he was able to decipher the coordinates. He jolted out of light speed as he passed by the atmosphere of Jupiter, the titanic jovian cast a shadow on him so dark that if he didn't have lights he would not be able to see much. He looked over at another green colored moon that orbited the planet, Io was lost to the Darkness now. As he kept going the navigation system told him he was getting closer to the signal. That's when he realized where it was coming from and why there was so much static. The icy moon of Europa slowly orbited on Chao's left.
Chao was apprehensive as he was pulled into the planet's orbital gravity, the last time he was here was not pleasant. He had come here on a mission to scope out a new arena for his Crucible, all he found was a ship frozen in ice, broken in half and a Clovis Bray machine gun prototype. Along with a heap of trouble, it was a notoriously bad place for his kind. He couldn't leave now though, he'd already come this far and wasn't backing out if he could help whoever it was on the radio.
The ship sat down on a snowy plateau, the wind was blowing it everywhere and Chao could barely make out where he was going, not only that but the armor he wore was not fit for this type of weather. The cold didn't effect him of course, he was an Exo but the snow was so deep and his helmet had no thermals. He took off the navigation system from his ship and clipped it onto his belt as his Mark blew in the wind. Then he set it to where it would alert him if he was at his destination. For now he grabbed his pulse rifle, No Feelings and trudged through the snow following the lights on the other side of the ridge that shone through the blizzard.
He made his way toward the lights and the radio static began to come through a little clearer. Though the howling wind still made it hard to tell what was being said, he knew he was close, he saw the remains of an old facility captured in the icy surface. The front of it seemed like it was torn open by someone... or something. He proceeded with caution and kept his weapon close by as he descended down into the cavern that used to be enclosed but was now at the mercy of the treacherous weather. He turned on the light on his helmet to see better as he walked down the stairs and out into an area that reminded him of Titan's Arcology. Golden Age maybe, sleek designs. It was a miracle this place was still running after all this time. He stepped through the hallway and the door mechanism showed a green light before sliding open. The blinding light from the next room poured in and Chao's blue eyes whirred as they adjusted to let less light in. Pointless for Exos other than having to keep them as accurate to humans as possible. Chao stepped through the door to the giant room and he looked on what he saw with worry. First thing he saw was the logo. Clovis Bray Exoscience. Second thing he saw was the Crux. The loudspeaker gave a three toned trill before he heard a voice.
"Welcome home my robotic savior. I trust that you... recognize where you are now." Chao gave a nod, though it was small.
"I am the one who sent the distress signal, however I am not in any danger no, on the contrary I am perfectly content right where I am."
"And where might that be?" Chao tried seeing if he could figure out what was going on.
"Not sure... I seem to be surrounded by late uh- experiments of what this facility studied back in our Golden Age. All by the great Clovis Bray the First, father of Clovis Bray the Second and grandfather to Ana and Elsie Bray. One of the greatest minds of our time, for you see he was never afraid to do what needed to be done for the betterment of humanity. You were once researched here to travel the cosmos and beyond, however we all know that is not possible with the means you attempt now... shame. Instead you were created for something more dire, you Chao-5 were built for war." Chao didn't hear the door lock behind him as the voice monologued.
"All Exos were built for war, but that doesn't mean we all followed what we were created to do." The voice laughed at that.
"Really? So toting around high powered weapons and wielding Light and Dark against those that seek to win isn't for war?"
"I serve to protect the last of humanity, I do not use my Light with reckless abandon, I use it to shield those who cannot carry one of their own." Chao said firmly.
"Your track record says otherwise." The voice challenged. "Chao-4, Vanguard reprimand: War Crimes. Quote: Using Striker powers against enemy force innocents. Chao-4, Vanguard reprimand: Misuse of power and broken Crucible rules. Quote: Blatant disregard for teammates lives, four injured, 2 killed." Chao stood still, he couldn't speak.
"Sounds like that fight is still inside you. It hasn't gone anywhere, no maybe how many times you try to reset yourself you were created to do battle. You are an Exo, it is your prime directive, the Clarity that Clovis used still remains after all this time." The voice was behind him now it Whispered in his audio sensors.
"You've merely directed your fighting toward a different cause. Now I am going to do the same." Chao couldn't move, he was trapped in an overshield of shadow that encased him. The voice came into view, a Warlock draped in shadow, Awoken, his hair almost looked like Ken's. He fired a round from Chao's own pulse rifle into his chest plate and it shattered. The Warlock hooked up a cord to one of the nearby work stations and began to scroll through Chao.
"Don't worry, just like you've lived your whole life... you won't feel a thing. You will fight for us now Chao-6."

Fireteam Misfits Lore Book 3- Ancestory
Aleina walked into the house pulling down her hood and holding her helmet at her side. Ken and Hailey were watching TV on the couch and turned to her.
"How was your day babe?" Ken asked giving her a kiss as Hailey kept her eyes away from her embarrassing parents.
"Mmm not too bad. Especially now that you're here." She smiled and began taking off her cloak giving it to Ken and going off to their room upstairs to change. She came down soon after Ken and Hailey had gotten their gear on.
"Cosmodrome is getting opened up for patrol again I hear." Ken said making conversation as they got ready to go.
"Mm hm! It'll be nice to get out there again." She stopped herself then and thought about their destination. "Are we sure that this will be okay? There is a ship on Titan." She whispered to Ken keeping the place they were going hidden for Hailey until they arrived. They both agreed it would be best.
"We'll be okay, we got each other. Just keep moving and be careful and we'll be in and out no problem." Aleina nodded but put her hand at her side where her knife was sheathed as they walked to the hangar elevator.
~
It wasn't long before the three of them could see the blue methane oceans of the moon of Saturn as Ken flew the ship down. Hailey looked up from her phone and out the viewport getting a glimpse of her surroundings.
"Question. Why are we taking a family outing to a hostile environment?" Ken grabbed a spare rifle and grenade launcher while Aleina answered Hailey's question.
"This is something your father and I do every year sweetie, I had anticipated it would be a few more until you came along but here we are." She chuckled softly to herself, Hailey noticed it seemed sad but decided not to pry. She would probably find out soon anyways.
They made their way over past the docks and over to the entrance of the Arcology. Each taking out a weapon and clearing the way through blasting Thrall and Acolytes as they went deeper. The broken display screens glitched out and the plants had overgrown getting into everything. The decaying halls told a tale of a once bustling place of living, a civilization on the far reaches of Sol. Until something wiped them out... and Ken had a feeling the same thing that did was the same dark, monolithic pyramid looming over the horizon.
They all reached a tunnel system past more Hive gunk that lined the walls and gave way to an open space. Ken sighed reaching for Aleina's hand which she promptly took as Hailey tried to figure out why they were acting this way. They said nothing and walked over to a familiar mound of rocks that was once marked with a Hunter knife. A knife that Aleina carried with her to this day, the knife that marked the burial site. Ken sat down and Hailey could see tears starting to fall from his eyes.
"Mom, wh- why is dad crying?" Hailey asked trying to put the pieces together but failing. Aleina turned to her staying close to Ken and holding his hand still.
"Honey, this... this is Malcom. My adopted father and your grandfather." She tried to say as she started to cry as well, she wiped her face with her cloak but smiled through it.
"Oh..." Hailey couldn't get out anything more than that, she looked at the mound of rocks that made up the grave, they were all placed with care. She realized that Ken must've made it himself, he watched him die and had to bury him. She couldn't imagine having to do that with any of her parents, she realized then how much of a warrior her father was that day.
~
After explaining a bit more of what happened and how the two of them visited the place last year for the first time together with Miss Linden, Ken told stories about her grandfather. He told about how he taught him how to summon the Goldengun, his first sparrow race, his research on all the different things he dug up from the Golden Age. And that was just the tip of it, because Hailey knew Ken still used those maps to this day to find more and fix it back up.
They stayed and cried some more as Hailey tried to comfort her mom and dad and they eventually decided to leave. Ken took one last family picture in front of it just in case that pyramid tried any funny business and made their way back to the ship. When they got back home they bought some candy and spent some time relaxin together at home. They tried to do a puzzle but Sol kept interrupting, so instead Ken brought out his guitar and played an acoustic version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" which he had read was supposed to be a song meant for around this time way back in the Golden Age. It was a bittersweet time for the Reyez family, but they were all happy to have each other as the sun started to hide behind its curtain of Earth on the horizon.
The yearly family tradition, now with Hailey along for it all. I know Halloween was yesterday so I'm a little late but enjoy this start to the next Misfits Lore Books and Happy Festival of the Lost Guardians!

Destiny
We called it The Traveler, and its arrival changed us forever. Great cities were built on Mars and Venus. Mercury became a garden world. Human lifespan tripled. It was a time of miracles. We stared out at the galaxy and knew that it was our destiny to walk in the light of other stars. But the Traveler had an enemy: a Darkness, which had hunted it for eons across the black gulfs of space. Centuries after our Golden Age began, this Darkness found us, and that was the end of everything.
But it was also a beginning.
Available Characters
Lady Allison, she/her
Human, Titan, Solar specialist, training in Stasis.
Ghost’s name: Evie
Accidental Warlord turned Iron Lord turned Guardian. Allie is currently living in semiretirement as a clan leader, part-time mentor to a rotating cast of the newly risen and full-time wrangler of a few resident misfits.
Dravyn, he/him
Awoken, Warlock, Solar and Arc specialist. Training in Stasis.
Ghost’s name: Dani
Barely surviving the Red Was drove Dravyn to experiment with Darkness to ensure he’d never be left helpless again. After forging his own Thorn, killing a fellow Guardian, and nearly losing himself to the Dark, he finally turned to his clan for support. Allie's tough love approach is working and he's slowly cleaning up his act.
Fendel-28, he/anything except she
Exo, Warlock, Void specialist.
Ghost’s name: Hastur
An eccentric and staunchly moral little wizard who threw himself into Hive studies after losing his fireteam during the Great Disaster. He is your grandpa now. Please do not resist.
Kel-2, he/him
Exo, Hunter, Arc specialist.
Ghost’s name: Roach
Still young, as Guardians go, he roams the Appalachian Dead Zone offering protection to any of the Lightless who need it - human or Eliksni. House of Light stan before it was cool.
Koenn, he/him
Awoken, Hunter, Void and Stasis specialist.
Ghost’s name: Sretta
He spent several years in unpleasant service to the Reef, being studied and assisting with black ops. The Battle of Saturn and its aftermath gave him a chance to slip free; reintegrating into Guardian culture has been difficult, but he’s getting there.
Roland, he/him
Human, Warlock, Solar specialist.
Ghost’s name: Destrier
Despite wanting to live as normal a life as a Lightbearer could, he was forced by circumstances into an alliance with the Iron Lords. As the Dark Age gave way to the City Age Roland stepped off the front lines into a support role for other Guardians. While he prefers focusing on his counseling services, he’ll pick up a gun again if necessary.
Vonryn, he/they
Human, Hunter, Solar specialist
Ghost’s name: Fry
Several years ago Vonryn dragged himself out of the Cosmodrome only to be launched into a series of increasingly profound events, up to and including godslaying. The fame and expectations that followed were too much; it wasn’t long before he retreated to the wilds in search of (relative) anonymity.
Additional note: while I write Vonryn as the protagonist of Destiny’s original storyline and most of the Taken King expansion, he is not Saladin’s Young Wolf, nor is he the player character in Destiny 2. His involvement in those other events doesn’t go beyond the level any other non-player Guardian had.

Uldren Sov, The Guardian (part 1)
notes: this is my (unfinished) version of how Uldren became a guardian, based off his initial resurrection in the Destiny 2 game back in 2018. this was written before Crow showed up in the game, so his personality is of my own creation (aka more like normal Uldren LOL). this was also before Glint was in the game, so he’s also my own creation, based off the single lore entry we had of him at the time. this story also takes place within my personal Destiny story starring my fireteam, the Misfits.
a brief backstory: the main guardian of this story is my self-insert. she was resurrected shortly before the Red War and experienced those events from the perspective of the main guardian in the game. her official class is a Warlock (Dawnblade main babyyyy🔥), but she can utilize powers and techniques from all classes. after the Red War, she forms a fireteam with two other guardians named Matt and Rocky, who experienced the events of the main guardian in the first Destiny game. she also eventually develops a romantic relationship with Cayde-6. another guardian named Isaac - who was part of the Misfits during the events of the first game, but perma-died shortly before the battle with Oryx - eventually rejoins the team after being brought back via time travel with the help of Osiris (I came up with this idea waaaaay before the thing with Saint haha). the events of Forsaken play out as is in the game, but Cayde is later brought back to life, along with Sundance, after the events of the Last Wish raid. Cayde is no longer the Hunter Vanguard and prefers to live as a simple guardian and honorary member of the Misfits.
8700+ words, rated T (gun violence, mild language, discussions of death and heavy trauma)
Part 2
______________________________________________________________
It had been weeks since Uldren Sov was laid to rest in the Dreaming City. After his body had been taken out of the Watchtower, he was given a proper burial ceremony. Despite everything that had happened, everything he had done, many of his people still mourned for him. They didn’t remember him as he was before he died; they remembered him as their Prince. Many of them still didn’t even know exactly what he had done out on the Tangled Shore. All they knew was he was gone, by the hands of a Guardian no less.
His body was placed in a gazebo on the outskirts of the Dreaming City, high up in the mountains and far from the Taken Corruption that had muddied the Awoken homeworld. None came to visit his grave, as it was customary for the Awoken to do. Once an Awoken had died, their bodies were fully laid to rest, to be left undisturbed by any other soul lest they bring dishonor to their fallen brethren. And more than enough dishonor had already been brought onto the Forsaken Prince.
However, this customary was mostly unknown to anyone outside of the Awoken themselves. And since the burial site was out in the open, it was quite easy for anyone to simply walk up to it unannounced.
Or in the case of one brave little soul, float to it.
From seemingly out of nowhere, a lone Ghost had found his way into the Dreaming City without anyone noticing. This particular Ghost had been searching for his Guardian for centuries, but to no avail. He was fairly well known amongst the other Ghosts and Guardians as having the most polite and cheerful attitude of all the wandering Ghosts. He had also affectionately been given the name “Pulled Pork” by one of the Guardians, which nobody ever questioned the meaning behind. It just seemed to fit him for some reason.
Pulled Pork was drawn to the Dreaming City by some unknown force. Perhaps it was the Traveler speaking to him, or maybe it was a link to his beautifully shiny shell that was adorned with hues of purple originating from the Reef. He didn’t know exactly why, but he didn’t question it either. Something was telling him to go here, and he had a very good feeling about this place.
He eventually got his answer after scouring the mountains for a few days. Perched on the side of one of the mountaintops was the gazebo that held Uldren Sov’s body. The little Ghost got curious about what could be there and proceeded to float towards it.
As he got closer, something inside him began to stir.
Could… could it be?
Pulled Pork scanned the body excitedly and gave a happy wiggle.
Yes!
At long last, he had done it.
With a brilliant flash of light, Pulled Pork enveloped the body with his glow. There was barely a second before the body shot up, fully healed and awake as if nothing had ever happened to him. He was gasping for air and shaking, as if waking up from a bad dream.
Uldren Sov was alive again. But he was not the man he was before…
In fact, he had no idea who he was after waking up. He stared at his own hands for a moment, then simply sat in silence, lost in his own thoughts. What had happened to him? Why was he so afraid? Was it a dream he’d had? He remembered a brief flash of someone hovering over him with an object pointed at his body when he’d first awoke, but nothing more. Then the memory was gone as soon as it’d happened. Was it a memory or a dream? And had he been asleep or… dead?
All of this pondering was interrupted by a small voice in his left ear. “Greetings!”
The voice made Uldren cry out in shock and nearly fall off the pedestal he was sitting on. Pulled Pork floated in front of him, clearly concerned for his new partner. “Oh, my apologies, sir! I didn’t mean to startle you!” His voice was upbeat, yet polite sounding; a welcome sound to the newly revived prince.
“Who are you?” Uldren asked. “What are you?”
“I am your Ghost!” Pulled Pork replied happily. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Guardian! I’ve been looking for you for so long. But I knew I would find you eventually, and… here you are!”
“Guardian?” Uldren said, clearly confused. “Is that my name?”
“Oh no, a Guardian is what you are. Your name is…” Pulled Pork paused. “I don’t know what it is, actually! But don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll figure out what it is soon enough.”
As Pulled Pork was speaking, Uldren brushed the blanket he’d had on him onto the ground and stood up to take a look around. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking with all the mountains and glittering crystals surrounding them. Even the gazebo they were standing under seemed to be bedazzled extravagantly. Why was he in such a fancy place?
Uldren turned to Pulled Pork and asked, “Where are we?”
“I believe this is the Dreaming City, the home of the Awoken,” the little Ghost answered.
“Awoken?”
“Yes! People with glowing skin and mystical powers from… some unknown source. People who look like you!”
Uldren realized he didn’t actually know what he looked like yet and glanced over at a large crystal that was protruding from the mountain. It was clear enough that he could see his own reflection in it. Like Pulled Pork said, he had glowing blue skin and white markings on his face. His jet-black hair was swept to the right side of his face and had white streaks in the front. He wore a dark poncho around his shoulders that had golden symbols and other embellishments all over it. His clothes were dark and scaly, save for his pants that were a deep shade of red. His boots had the same scales on them and went all the way up over his knees. Upon first glance, Uldren thought he looked like a mess. But then he gave himself another good look over and realized he actually really liked the outfit. He apparently had good taste in fashion.
“This… this is all very confusing,” Uldren said, stepping back to where Pulled Pork was before. “You said I’m a ‘Guardian’, yes? What even is that? And what is a ‘Ghost’? And…” He gestured to the pedestal he’d been laying on. “Is this what Guardians sleep on? Or… wait… was I dead??”
“Patience Guardian, everything is alright.” Pulled Pork saw that Uldren was a little frantic and wanted to reassure him. “I’ll try to explain everything. But first, I suggest we try to find a way off this mountain. As nice as the scenery is, we shouldn’t stay here forever. I need to get you to your new home, after all!”
New home? Did he have an old home? Why couldn’t he remember anything? Everything was happening so fast, Uldren could barely handle it. He didn’t want to let it show though, and instead he challenged the little Ghost. “I’m not going anywhere until I get answers.” He crossed his arms in a show of defiance.
“Goodness! You’re quite a feisty one!” Pulled Pork floated closer to Uldren. “You know, you’re not at all what I expected. Then again, I had no expectations. But that doesn’t really matter. You are my Guardian, and it’s my job to stay by your side for the rest of eternity. I have a good feeling about you. It is truly an honor to be your Ghost, Guardian.” He gave Uldren the Ghost equivalent of a bow.
Uldren hadn’t expected that kind of reaction from the little fellow. He was incredibly upbeat, almost sickeningly so, but something about him was incredibly endearing. And he hadn’t noticed it before, but there was a deep connection to this Ghost that Uldren could feel in his very soul. He couldn’t be mean to him now even if he wanted to. This Ghost was the only person he knew right now, after all.
The realization suddenly hit him like a ton of bricks: he was alone. Why did that hurt so much to say, to even think about? Not only was there no one else around, but… Uldren couldn’t even remember anybody else. If he hadn’t known any better, he and this Ghost were the only two souls left in the world. What a terrifying thought to be alone… but wait. He wasn’t alone. He had this Ghost, this little soul that had somehow latched onto him and committed himself to staying by Uldren’s side. Any worries Uldren had before were dispelled upon this realization. His only concern now was the welfare of this new Ghost friend of his.
“Th…thank you,” Uldren managed to say. Pulled Pork twirled happily in front of him in response. “However…” Uldren looked back at the gazebo again. “Just answer me this one question. Was I…” He sighed shakily. “Was I… dead before this?”
Pulled Pork paused for a moment before replying. “Yes.”
The weight of his answer shook Uldren to his core. He didn’t want to truly consider it before, but hearing it out loud stung. Badly. And it left Uldren with even more unanswered questions than before.
The little Ghost could see that his Guardian was distressed by this news, and once again decided to reassure him. “Everything’s alright, Guardian. This just means that you won’t ever die again as long as I’m around!”
Uldren immediately perked up at hearing this. “Really?? You mean, I’m immortal?”
“In a way, yes! It’s still possible for you to die, but I’ll always be able to bring you back to life again as long as I’m with you... which I hopefully always will be!”
Uldren eyed the nearby cliffs curiously. “So you’re saying, I could jump off these cliffs here, potentially die, and then just come back to life again?”
“Yup!”
“Interesting… what else can you do?”
“Well... it’s not so much what I can do as what you can do, Guardian.”
Uldren raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“For example…” Pulled Pork floated over to a high outcropping of rocks protruding from the mountains. “These rocks would be nearly impossible to reach normally, but the power of the Light has granted you superhuman abilities! Try jumping onto the highest rock.”
Power of the Light? Superhuman abilities? Jump onto the rock? Uldren had compiled a giant mental list of everything he wanted clarification on at this point. But for now, he was going to humor this little Ghost and take up his ridiculous challenge.
The rocks were most definitely too high to reach by jumping, and Uldren gave Pulled Pork a curious look before walking over to the rocks and leaping off the ground. Immediately, he noticed that he was ascending much higher into the air than he expected. It caught him off guard a little, and he landed shakily on his feet.
“Try it again, Guardian,” Pulled Pork encouraged him. “And try to give it a little more ‘oomph’, if you know what I mean.”
Uldren exhaled loudly and gathered up all his strength before taking another leap into the air. He went much farther this time, but not quite high enough to reach the top of the rock. Not wanting to be defeated again, Uldren tried boosting himself in the air by kicking his legs out, which caused him to go flying higher into the air unexpectedly. He panicked a little, but realized that he was going to come crashing down hard onto the ground if he didn’t grab onto something. Instinctively, he reached his hand out and grabbed onto the side of the mountain, planting his feet firmly on the rocks for balance.
As he was catching his breath, Uldren heard Pulled Pork shouting at him from below. “Well done, Guardian! I knew you could do it!”
It was then that Uldren realized he wasn’t clinging to the mountain at all. He was hanging over the side of the highest rock that Pulled Pork had told him to jump to in the first place. With newfound confidence, Uldren pulled himself up onto the rock and stood at the edge with his hands at his hips, as if he’d just won a contest of strength. He looked down at Pulled Pork and called out, “nothing to it!” before leaping boldly off the rock and coming down hard onto the ground below.
Too cocky, he’d gotten too cocky. Every bone in his body shook as his feet hit the ground, and for a moment, he thought he might pass out. But then Pulled Pork floated over and gave him a quick douse of Light to heal him. It was another shocking phenomenon, but Uldren was more concerned with his pride now than anything else.
“Hmm, seems we’ll have to work on those landings,” Pulled Pork pointed out. “But at least you appear to have already mastered the jump.”
“Naturally,” Uldren replied as he smoothed out and readjusted his poncho.
“There’s many more abilities for you to discover besides jumping, of course. But we can discuss those on the way.”
“Way where? Where are we—“ Uldren was cut off by the sudden sensation of Pulled Pork disappearing into his body unannounced. “Gah! What the hell!? Where did you go??”
Uldren heard a chuckle, followed by the sound of Pulled Pork’s voice. “I’m still here.” He was somehow speaking to Uldren as if he were still right in front of him. It was a bit unsettling. “Don’t worry, I’ll continue to guide you as we leave.”
It was at this point that Uldren gave up on trying to get further clarification on what was going on. Everything was happening too quickly for him to fully process anyway, so he decided to just go along with whatever his new Ghost friend was telling him. Something about the unknown was exciting to him, especially now that he knew he was basically immortal. He had newfound confidence in himself and was ready to tackle whatever came his way, literally.
Without prompting from his Ghost, Uldren set off through the mountains to wherever the wind would take him. He pushed his new jumping abilities to the limit, testing how far he could jump over chasms and how high he could scale the rocks and crystals without climbing. His frenzied laughter echoed through the mountains as he leapt from one spot to another, like a monkey leaping from tree to tree, paying no mind to how fatal it would be to fall. If one saw him, they might think he was mad from how reckless he was being.
Eventually, he began to wear himself out and perched atop a particularly jagged crystal jutting out from one of the mountains. From his perch, he could see the entire Dreaming City off in the distance, clouded in wispy, white fog with smatterings of purples and blues peeking through it. The Watchtower stared back at him ominously. Something about that place seemed... inviting.
“Are you sure we can’t swing by the city for a while?” Uldren asked his currently invisible friend. “Seems a shame to just leave without so much as a look around my apparent ‘homeworld’.”
Pulled Pork phased out and hovered over Uldren’s shoulder. “It is a lovely looking place. As long as you ignore the hordes of Taken and Scorn perusing around, of course.”
Uldren gave his Ghost a confused look. “The what and the what?”
“Besides,” Pulled Pork continued, not even noticing Uldren’s question. “We don’t really have a way to get over there now. As it is, I’m not even sure how we’re going to get out of this area in the first place. We have no ship to use.”
“Whoa whoa wait,” Uldren said as he stood up. He was now standing precariously on the edge of the crystal. “You mean to tell me we’ve been going all this time, trying to get off the mountains, when we don’t actually have a way to actually get off the mountains?”
“Actually… yes, that’s correct.”
Uldren felt like clawing his own face off, but just dragged his hands down his face instead. “Then why the hell were we even coming out here in the first place??”
“I thought it would be good for you to test out your abilities for a while. Also, I ahh... forgot we had no ship to leave on.”
With a loud groan, Uldren flopped down onto the crystal dramatically, practically breaking the tip off from how hard he came down on it. “Wonderful. Just fantastic. Not only am I wandering around the mountains with amnesia and random superpowers, but apparently, I’m stuck here as well!” He sighed loudly and held his head in his hands. “I suddenly am starting to miss that old deathbed I was on earlier…”
Before Pulled Pork could respond, something appeared off in the distance near the city. It seemed to be coming towards them. The little Ghost watched as the object kept getting closer and closer to the mountains, until finally, he could make out the unmistakable silhouette of an aircraft flying through the clouds and fog. “Ooh, we may not have to wait much longer, Guardian!”
Curiously, Uldren peeked through his hands and looked into the sky. He didn’t even have to look for it, he could hear the aircraft from how close it was getting to the mountains. “Now who do you suppose that could be?”
“My best guess is it could be one of the other Awoken from the Dreaming City,” Pulled Pork responded. “Or perhaps even another Guardian.”
A strong gust of wind blew in Uldren’s face, and he swept his hair back into place as he stood up. “Well then, I guess it’s time to put on our best faces and meet this person, whoever they might be. They may be our only hope getting out of this forsaken place.” He held out his hand for Pulled Pork, who promptly floated over and phased back into Uldren’s body once he was close enough. Another gust whipped up Uldren’s poncho, and he adjusted it properly before taking a giant leap off the crystal and landing firmly on the rocky path below him. Landings were no longer an issue at this point. He was feeling more and more comfortable with his newfound abilities as he went along, and his confidence was peaking. It was almost more exciting subjecting to the idea of showing off to this unknown person rather than simply asking for a ride off the mountains.
Uldren watched as the aircraft made its way over to the area where he’d originally reawakened, near the gazebo. Perhaps this person was coming to visit him specifically. And if they were, well, they were in for quite a shock. The thought of completely blowing someone’s mind with his resurrection excited him more, and he proceeded to make his way back to that little gazebo, all the while plotting out how he could make some sort of grand entrance to this person.
Meanwhile, the aircraft had reached an area in the mountain that was suitable for landing. The pilot never actually landed the ship however and instead simply transmatted out, as they were accustomed to doing. Also, they were behaving more frantic than usual, as evidenced by how the ship had nearly crashed into the side of the mountain upon arrival.
“Guardian, are you sure you want to do this?” came the familiar voice of a Ghost from inside the pilot’s helmet. “We still don’t even know if what we saw was real or not.”
Ever since the two of them had visited the Queen’s Court earlier that day, Hannah had thought of nothing else but that vision she’d seen – the vision of her most hated adversary getting resurrected by a Ghost. It absolutely terrified her to think that he might be alive again. She desperately didn’t want to believe it was true, but if it was, then she had to find the person she’d seen in the vision before anyone else did.
“I… I need to know, Ghost.”
Ghost said nothing in reply, knowing that once Hannah’s mind was made up, there was no talking her out of it. As this was an extremely sensitive subject though, Ghost couldn’t help but worry that this was going to be like the Tangled Shore all over again. Except this time, they were alone. And despite urging her to tell Petra or one of her other friends about what she’d seen in the vision, Hannah was bound and determined to once again deal with this matter herself. Ghost just hoped it wouldn’t end up like last time.
Taking a moment to build up her courage, Hannah set off towards the gazebo, a thousand thoughts running through her head. Her fists were clenched and she felt her whole body shaking as she flew past the rocks and crystals surrounding her. After what had happened at the Tangled Shore, she had never wanted to even think about that horrible man ever again, much less see him resurrected as a Guardian.
Memories of what she’d had to endure came flooding back into her mind like a mob of War Beasts out for blood. The sight of Cayde’s lifeless body on the floor of the Prison of Elders. The faces of those horrendous Scorned Barons that she’d sleeplessly hunted down for days on end. The venture into that accursed Ascendant Realm and the hordes of Taken she’d fought off inside of it. The encounter with one of Riven’s horrifying Chimeras inside the Watchtower. And finally, the face of the man who’d been behind it all, the one who’d killed so many innocents, including Cayde, and had brought nothing but shame to the Awoken people. That broken, miserable man that she’d stared down with her lover’s gun and killed without so much as a second thought.
Why did she keep going back to that particular moment? Was it because that had been her first real encounter with the Awoken prince? That she had no frame of reference of him other than his pathetic, helpless body sprawled out on the floor after being consumed by the Chimera? At the time, she had relished in how pitiful he looked. But every time she went back to that memory, a part of her heart began to ache. Was she… no, she couldn’t feel sorry for him. Even after learning that he’d been under the influence of the Ahamkara, she didn’t feel remorse for him. He’d done terrible things even before then. He’d gotten everything he deserved and more. His pathetic writhing on the floor of the Watchtower matched his pathetic life.
So why then did she hurt so much whenever revisiting that memory? And why did it hurt most of all thinking about it now during the potential of seeing him being reborn as a Guardian of all things? Hannah didn’t have answers for any of these questions. All she knew was, if nothing else, she had to find him again. Guardian or not.
Eventually, her thoughts shifted to how she would potentially deal with finding the prince reawakened again. This was coupled with her complete refusal to accept that this might even be possible, and it caused her to have an argument with herself in her own head.
Ghost couldn’t actually read her thoughts, but he still knew what she was thinking. He had sensed the turmoil inside of her since they’d first seen the vision, and he desperately wished he could say something, anything to reassure her. But he knew his efforts would be in vain. The only thing that would help now was the answer to her question: had Uldren been reborn as a Guardian or not?
The answer came quicker than either of them expected. Just before they reached the gazebo, as Hannah was deeply lost in her own thoughts, they came across a large crystal that was blocking their immediate path. It was too big to jump over, so Hannah took the path around one side of it. And as she rounded the path, her eyes were immediately met by another’s. Another’s that she recognized.
Standing on a ledge across a small chasm next to the path Hannah was on was none other than the man she’d been searching for. As soon as she’d gotten sight of him, Hannah froze. Her eyes doubled in size and her breaths became heavy. Everything she’d been thinking about, every memory, every feeling, it all vanished in an instant. Seeing him standing there fully alive and well like nothing had ever happened… it was like getting hit full on by a Cabal brigade. He too seemed to be frozen in shock at the sight of her, rightfully so, she thought.
The two former adversaries stared at each other in silence for what felt like an eternity. Hannah was too in shock to move, and Uldren’s mood had completely been shot now that his “grand entrance” was ruined. Not only that, but this was the first other living being he’d seen since reawakening, and he didn’t want to scare them off lest he’d be left alone once again. Still, he decided to make the first move and began to raise his hand for a proper greeting. This was a mistake, as Hannah immediately responded by pulling out a gun from behind her and pointing it directly at Uldren.
One look at the end of Hannah’s gun was all it took for Uldren to retreat and sprint off back into the mountains.
Hannah cursed to herself and immediately set off after him. She never fired at him, simply tried catching up to him, but to Uldren, she might as well have been firing the gun at him. Every once in a while, he’d look back as he was running to see how close she was getting to him. He was a bit more familiar with the mountains at this point, so he knew the best ways to avoid her, but she was extremely fast and seemed to have complete control over her abilities. If he wasn’t running for his life, Uldren would’ve been impressed by Hannah’s display of her powers.
As the chase went on, Hannah tried to slow Uldren down by throwing grenades at him of various elements. Blasts of fire and electricity flew through the air, landing directly in front of Uldren and blocking his path. He stopped for a moment to consider his options, then looked back to see Hannah continuing to rush towards him ferociously. Deciding he would rather brave the elements than the terrifying woman charging him, Uldren dove directly into the electrical fire blaze.
To the surprise of everyone, Uldren never actually touched the fire. He’d somehow disappeared and reappeared on the other side, completely unscathed. From Hannah’s perspective, he looked like a shadow moving through the fire. She cursed again and flew over the fire, landing directly in front of Uldren, who was still pondering exactly how he’d accomplished such a feat. As soon as he saw Hannah standing in front of him though, he quickly leaped away and vanished once again, using his newfound ability to escape her sight.
Once he thought he’d gotten away from Hannah, Uldren uncloaked himself and took a moment to catch his breath. “You didn’t tell me I could disappear like that!” he said out loud to his Ghost.
Pulled Pork responded, “I didn’t even know you could do that! It appears you have the gift of Void powers, Guardian.”
Uldren took a look at his own arms, which were faintly glowing with a purple aura around them. “Well, let’s see that crazy lady come and get me now, then!”
Again, he’d gotten too cocky. Without warning, a loud gunshot rang out into the air. Uldren cried out as he felt a piercing pain in his right leg, causing him to collapse where he stood. As he clutched his leg in pain, he looked up to see Hannah hovering over him with a gun pointed directly at his face. He tried to inch away, but Hannah kept her gun uncomfortably close to him.
“Not good at first impressions, are you?” Uldren said through clenched teeth, barely managing a snicker at his own words.
“Shut up,” Hannah replied harshly. “You’re lucky I chose to just disable you and not straight up kill you.”
“I feel like we may have gotten off on the wrong foot here... ironically.” Uldren tried sitting up, but the pain in his leg was too great to move very much.
“Oh, I’m not the one who’s done anything wrong around here, I can assure you of that.” Hannah shoved her gun further towards Uldren’s face for emphasis.
“Well if I’ve done anything wrong, I apologize.” A sharp pain in his leg made Uldren hiss through his teeth.
Hannah couldn’t help but laugh in response. “You apologize? You really think that’s going to suffice, you coward!?”
“Coward?” Uldren propped himself up on one arm to look at Hannah better. “Name-calling is hardly a proper way to get your point across, isn’t it?”
Hannah felt like smacking him across the face with her gun instead of shooting him at this point. He was snarky as ever, it seemed.
“Besides, I hardly think I’ve done anything worthy of that title in the very short time we’ve known each other.” Uldren was met with the end of Hannah’s gun shoved directly into his forehead.
“Then why did you run?” she hissed at him.
Uldren looked directly at her as he spoke. “Well, it’s not like I had someone pointing a gun at me or anything! I don’t know about you, but I tend to run from people who are trying to shoot me!” Another sharp pain caused him to cry out and clutch his leg again.
As Uldren began to writhe on the floor in pain, Hannah was transported back to that moment in the Watchtower where she’d been standing over Uldren after he’d been spat out onto the floor by the Chimera. The hand holding the gun began to shake as Hannah realized she was reliving once of the worst moments of her entire life. Why was this so upsetting to her?
“You don’t even realize what you’ve done,” she seethed at him.
“Memory wipe… will do that to you,” Uldren replied feebly.
At that, Hannah ripped her helmet off and stared Uldren down menacingly. “You don’t remember me!? Well you’re going to! I can promise you that!” Without even realizing what she was about to do, Hannah put her finger on the trigger of her gun and took aim at Uldren’s face, ready to end it all once again.
“Guardian, what are you doing??” Ghost’s voice rang in her ears like an alarm waking her up from a bad dream.
All at once, the realization of what she was about to do hit her hard, and Hannah nearly dropped her gun out of shock.
Uldren looked up at her, curious about what she would do next. Their eyes met once again, but this time, Uldren could clearly see her face. The flushed redness of her skin nearly matched her bright red hair, most likely due to how angry she’d gotten. There was a fire in her blue-green eyes that shook Uldren to his core. In any other situation, he would’ve most likely found Hannah very attractive, but at that moment, she might as well have been the devil incarnate. He braced himself for whatever she might say or do next to him.
“Excuse me!” came a voice from somewhere on Uldren’s body. It was Pulled Pork. He phased out of Uldren’s body and floated directly in-between Hannah and Uldren’s faces. The sight of the little Ghost caught Hannah completely off-guard.
“Porky!?” she exclaimed, having now recognized him.
Uldren repeated the name questioningly, making sure he’d heard Hannah correctly. He greatly hoped that was not actually his Ghost’s name.
“Can you please not harass my Guardian like this?” Pulled Pork said to Hannah. “He’s more sensitive than he lets on.”
Uldren retorted with a “hey!”, while Hannah just stared at the little Ghost, still in shock.
“Oh boy,” Pulled Pork said as he got a better look at his Guardian. Hannah watched as Pulled Pork projected a wave of healing light over Uldren’s injured leg, healing it almost instantly.
That was the final straw for her. She had officially hit her limit. Taking a few steps back, Hannah let her gun fall to the ground as she clutched her own head in her hands and fell to her knees. Her vision had been a reality, and she hadn’t even realized. Even if she’d shot him in that moment before, Pulled Pork would’ve just revived him again. Hannah began to feel sick to her stomach.
Ghost phased out of Hannah’s body and floated over to the other two. “Pulled Pork! It is you!” he exclaimed once he got a good look at the other.
Pulled Pork sighed, then turned to his comrade. “Yes, it’s me... nice to see you two again. Although, it definitely could’ve been a nicer reunion...”
Uldren stood up and brushed off his pants. “Why do you both keep calling my Ghost those ridiculous names?” he huffed. “I refuse to own a Ghost that’s named after food.”
His Ghost. Pulled Pork was his Ghost. Hannah kept repeating it over and over in her head, but she still couldn’t believe it. How could sweet little Pulled Pork have chosen such a horrible monster like Uldren as his partner? She chalked it up as Pulled Pork simply not knowing what Uldren had done, but then again, the process of a Ghost choosing their guardian had no real rhyme or reason to it. She knew all of this, but she still refused to believe it.
“Is your guardian going to be alright?” Uldren said dryly to Ghost, placing his hands on his hips as he gave Hannah a look over. Sarcasm dripped from his mouth as he spoke again. “I get the slightest feeling I’ve upset her somehow, in case it wasn’t obvious already.”
“Well, it’s… a long story,” Ghost replied. “One that you won’t like and one that I don’t feel is appropriate to share right now.”
Uldren sighed. “How unfortunate. I was hoping I could I get a ride from you off this giant rock, but I guess I’ll just have to wait until—“
“No!” Hannah suddenly exclaimed, startling the other three. “No no no… you’re not going anywhere.”
Uldren raised an eyebrow at her. “But I thought—“
“I’m not letting you out of my sight.” Hannah composed herself enough to stand up and face Uldren. “Not again…”
Now Uldren was even more curious about exactly what kind of history he used to have with Hannah in his past life. Whatever it was, it couldn’t have been pleasant considering how she was treating him. But then again, it could be something as simple as he stood her up for a date once and now she was pissed beyond belief at him. That idea didn’t feel right though. It had to be something more serious than that… but what exactly?
Suddenly, another woman’s voice started speaking through Ghost’s communicator. “Guardian, are you there?”
Ghost floated back over to Hannah so she could respond. “Yes Petra, what is it?”
“One of my Corsairs saw you flying into the distant mountains earlier in a rush,” the woman’s voice continued. “Is everything alright?”
Hannah was silent for a moment. “Honestly, I’m not really sure anymore.” She stared Uldren down, and he responded with a cheeky shrug. Hannah rolled her eyes and sighed. “I… I’m sorry, Petra. I should’ve told you before.”
“Told me what?” Petra replied frantically. “What’s going on? Do I need to come out there?”
Hannah looked at Uldren again, who now had apparently started making faces at her while she wasn’t looking. “Yes. Yes you do. Right now.”
“I’m on my way,” Petra said, immediately ending the transmission afterwards.
Uldren, who was still making faces at Hannah, felt a firm grip on one of his arms. “You’re coming with me,” she said, looking directly at him.
“And if I refuse?” Uldren inquired cheekily. He was once again met with a gun in his face. “Alright fine, I’ll play along. Who knows, perhaps at some point today I’ll actually get an answer to one of my many questions!”
“Don’t count on it,” Hannah said as she began tugging Uldren away. The two Ghosts looked at each other before following their guardians back to where Hannah’s ship was stationed.
By the time they all got back to Hannah’s ship, they saw another ship flying in and looking for a place to land. Uldren assumed this was the aforementioned “Petra” from before. Since she wasn’t a guardian, Petra had to settle for docking her ship near Hannah’s and hopping out onto the rocks to climb down to where the others were waiting for her. She could see Hannah standing next to Uldren, still with a tight grip on one of his arms, but didn’t recognize who he was from far away.
“Alright Guardian, I’m here,” Petra said once she got closer. “What’s going on—“ She suddenly stopped in her tracks and gasped loudly.
“Petra,” Hannah started. “I know what you’re thinking, but don’t—“
Too late. Petra had already pulled her gun out and had it pointed squarely at Uldren’s head. “What’s going on!?” she exclaimed. “Is this some sort of trick!?”
Ghost floated closer to her. “It’s no trick, Petra. It’s really him. And if you’ll just—“
“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t pull the trigger right now.” Petra gave Uldren a deathly glare, which actually made him flinch a little.
“Because it won’t do any good,” Hannah responded. “I know, I tried.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Petra exclaimed.
At that, Pulled Pork floated out from behind Uldren’s shoulder into full view. “Hello! That would be my doing, ma’am.”
The sight of the little Ghost made Petra gasp again, this time covering her mouth for emphasis. “Wh-what… you… then you’re…”
Uldren smirked and shrugged his shoulders. “Guilty as charged.”
Petra didn’t move. All she could do was stare at the former prince in total shock. “How… how long…”
“We just found him a little while ago,” Ghost replied. “His Ghost said he’s only been alive for a few hours. Long enough for him to get acquainted with some of his powers already.”
“He is quite good at jumping,” Pulled Pork added proudly.
It seemed as though Petra was taking the whole thing much better than Hannah did, which was a welcome sight for Uldren. He hadn’t realized it at first, but Petra was another Awoken, and it excited him greatly to see another of his own kind. Not only that, but she was incredibly beautiful, and he couldn’t seem to stop smiling at her. If she had actually shot him earlier, he probably would’ve thanked her for it.
Petra slowly started making her way closer to Hannah and Uldren, never taking her eyes off the prince’s face. She was clearly still in shock at seeing him again, but the expression on her face was much softer than Hannah’s had been earlier. It appeared as though she was more happy than upset to see Uldren again. Hannah knew that although Petra had helped hunt down Uldren back on the Tangled Shore, she was more affected by the loss of the prince due to her long connection with the royal family. She remembered how Petra had confided to her about her feelings regarding the entire situation, as well as her lamentations about having lost the close relationship she had with Uldren in their shared past. It was obvious to Hannah that Petra had deep feelings for Uldren, romantic or not, so she wasn’t that surprised to see Petra reacting the way she was towards the newly resurrected Uldren.
“You… you don’t remember anything, do you?” Petra had come right up to Uldren, who responded by shaking his head. “Not even your name?”
Uldren shook his head again and said, “Nobody’s bothered to tell me what it is. Or what any of this is, really. It’s been a very confusing day, to say the least.”
Petra looked like she might start crying, but quickly composed herself. “Well, I guess we’ll have to remedy that, won’t we?”
Uldren gave her a sly look. “Are you offering?”
Hannah thought she might throw up at this display and quickly stepped in. “Petra, a word please?” She released Uldren’s arm and pointed sternly at him. “Don’t go anywhere.”
“Don’t really have anywhere to go,” he responded with a shrug.
The two women walked off far enough away from Uldren that he couldn’t hear their conversation. It was easy for him to tell where this would be headed though. They would argue about what to do with him and not come to any real conclusion, and he would end up continuing to stay stuck on that blasted mountain without any means of escape. They might as well have just put him in prison at that point. At least then he wouldn’t be alone.
Gosh, he hated the thought of that. Every time the idea of him being left alone again entered his mind, he felt sick. Did he really crave company that badly? Or perhaps there was something in his past life that happened to make him feel this way? Could he even survive on his own? Yes, of course he could, he had his powers and he had his Ghost. He would never be truly alone because of his Ghost. But… it wasn’t enough. He needed companions. Another person he could reach out and touch if he wanted to. But why?
Pulled Pork seemed to sense the conflict inside his guardian and floated closer to him, hovering over Uldren’s shoulder like a bird on a perch. It was a welcoming gesture, and Uldren gave his little companion a gentle pat to thank him. “Seems we’re going to be here a bit longer, my friend…”
A gust of wind whistled across the mountain Uldren stood on. It rustled his hair and caused his poncho to near fly into his own face. The dual aircrafts floating overhead were jostled by the wind, but remained where they were stationed. Uldren watched the ships sway with the wind and wished that he was up there inside one of them instead of that infernal mountaintop.
But then again… who was stopping him? He’d been left to his own devices after all, and both Hannah and Petra were too distracted by their conversation to pay any attention to Uldren. It would be super easy to simply sneak onto one of the ships and dart out of there before either of them noticed. He disliked the idea of upsetting both of the women by his actions, but at the same time, he didn’t trust either of them enough with his apparent fate either. The more he thought it over, the more hijacking one of their ships and leaving on his own sounded desirable to Uldren.
Meanwhile, Hannah and Petra were doing exactly as Uldren predicted and were in total conflict over what should be done with the newly revived prince. Hannah was on the side of locking him away in another prison of some sort, while Petra was on the side of trying to reacquaint Uldren back into the lifestyle he had before, especially now that the queen was actively at their side. And Ghost was the only one who thought bringing Uldren back to the Last City and helping him become a guardian was a good idea. Both Hannah and Petra opposed this suggestion, saying that nobody would accept him there due to his past transgressions. This excuse was also why Hannah thought he should be locked up again and why Petra thought he should be kept in the Dreaming City with her and the other Awoken.
Ghost was disappointed in both of them and began to openly express his feelings. “Just listen to you both. All this back and forth is getting us nowhere. Uldren’s been given a new chance at life, and both of you want to just hide him away again because you think that’s what best for him. Did either of you even consider what he might want for himself?”
“No,” Hannah blatantly replied with a scoff.
“I’m afraid it’s not that simple,” Petra added. “This is a very sensitive situation. Uldren’s crimes are still fresh on everyone’s minds. Even among the Awoken, there are those who would wish death upon him again without a second thought. As if it isn’t bad enough one of my closest friends is among those wishing him a second death…”
Hannah realized that Petra was talking about her and looked away, ashamed. “I… I’m sorry, Petra. I didn’t even…” She sighed shakily. “I didn’t even consider how you must be feeling right now. I’ve been letting my anger get the better of me again, and… I’m not thinking correctly…” Hannah hugged her own body and kept her face low to the ground in shame. She was once again being reminded of her time in the Tangled Shore, when she’d cast out all feelings except pure anger and rage. She’d nearly ruined her relationship with her fireteam and the rest of her family back then because of her aggression, and she could feel it starting to happen again now with Petra. It made her sick.
“My friend…” Hannah felt a hand on her shoulder as the Awoken woman spoke to her. “You and I both have experienced great pain during our time together. We’ve walked through hell and back again, all for a now seemingly negated cause. But I can tell you right now, were something similar to ever occur again, I would gladly go through with it knowing you were by my side.”
Hannah wanted to cry. She could feel the tears forming in her eyes and shut them tight, allowing a few drops to fall down her cheeks before turning to look up at her friend. Petra wasn’t much of a hugger, so Hannah instead took both of Petra’s hands in her own and held them tightly to her chest. “Thank you, Petra…”
Even though the two women hadn’t known each other for very long, both of them felt a deep connection with each other that transcended time itself. At times, Hannah even pondered if perhaps the two of them were friends in their past lives. Whatever the reason, both women were extremely grateful for their current relationship, and Hannah vowed out loud to be more aware of her own feelings from that point forward.
“Alright, enough of this silly bickering,” Petra said. “I say we do as Ghost says and get Uldren’s opinion on the matter. It won’t hurt to at least hear his side.”
“Fine,” Hannah said with a defeated sigh. “But I’m not promising any—uhh, Ghost? What’s wrong?” Her little partner had begun to flit about frantically.
“Umm, I think we may be too late to get an opinion from Uldren!” Ghost quickly responded.
“What are you talking about?” Hannah questioned.
Ghost floated over to where Uldren had been standing. But there was no Uldren to be found.
“Gah dammit!!” Hannah stomped her foot angrily and began to look around for the now missing former prince. Petra did the same.
“He can’t have gotten too far,” she reassured Hannah. “He’s probably still around here somewhere.”
Petra’s words were reaffirmed when the sound of a jet engine firing up came from overhead.
“No…” Hannah seethed. “He wouldn’t dare…”
Both women looked up and saw that Hannah’s ship was now occupied by the man at large. That familiar smirk was plastered on his face, and he gave the women a quick salute before swiftly making his getaway.
Hannah began to throw a full-on tantrum. “I’m. Going. To. Kill him!!!!”
Without wasting any time, Petra grabbed Hannah’s arm and began to pull her towards the other ship. “There’s not much time! Hurry and take my ship before he’s out of range!”
“But what about you?” Ghost asked.
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll get one of the Corsairs to come out here and get me. But you must find Uldren before anyone else finds him first!” She placed a hand on Hannah’s shoulder and looked her square in the eyes. “My friend, I understand your frustration, but please try to contain your emotions until the prince is found. I…” She sighed shakily. “I don’t want to lose him again.”
Hannah’s face was still red with anger, but she nodded in understanding to Petra before leaping up and transmatting into Petra’s ship. She’d never flown a ship like it before, but she was well versed enough in flying that she would be ok. Plus, her level of rage was so high at this point that she could pretty much do anything.
Meanwhile, Uldren was having a grand old time on his own, flying to who knows where. He didn’t really care where he went at this point, he just wanted to get away from the mountains as quickly as possible. Flying came naturally to him apparently, so it was no trouble getting out of the Dreaming City. Nobody had tried gunning him down yet either, which he assumed was due to him being in Hannah’s ship.
It was just him, his Ghost, and the stars now. That is, until he started getting closer to the Reef.
“Good Lord… what happened here?”
The Reef was still in shambles from the war with Oryx, but neither Uldren nor Pulled Pork knew that. Massive bits of debris floated ominously throughout the remaining sections of the Reef, including the portions that made up the Tangled Shore. Uldren was drawn to the mystery of it all.
“I’m sure this place has a grand story to tell…”
“Guardian,” Pulled Pork said, floating closer to Uldren’s face. “If we continue on this path, it will be much more difficult to reach the planet Earth.”
“Earth?” Uldren’s face scrunched up in confusion. “What are you talking about?”
“The Last City resides on planet Earth,” Pulled Pork explained. “It’s where all guardians go after being resurrected. I believe I explained this earlier. You must have forgotten.”
Uldren scoffed. “Do they have to go there?”
“No guardian has to do anything. It’s just the way things are, I guess. Also, you said you wanted to socialize, so the Last City will be perfect for doing that!”
Right. Socializing. People. Uldren had almost forgotten that’s why he’d gone away from the mountains in the first place. The thrill of exploring new worlds was getting the better of him. But he knew that exploration would still be possible after acquainting himself with some other fellow guardians. Perhaps one or more of them would even like to join him. He could form a whole party of guardians. A party sounded fun. Maybe he would just throw a straight up party instead.
“Guardian?”
Uldren shook himself out of his own thoughts and cleared his throat. “Right then, let’s get ourselves to that ‘Last City’ before those lovely ladies notice we’re gone.”
“Yeah, it’s likely one of them is following us already,” Pulled Pork added.
“And I have a feeling I know which one it is…” A mental image of Hannah flying towards him enveloped in a raging inferno crossed Uldren’s mind, and he shuttered in fear.
“I mean, it would make sense. This is her ship after all.”
Uldren’s eyes bugged out. “This is… her ship?”
“Yup!”
A floating piece of debris flew past the ship. Uldren could see his reflection in it. An omen of things to come…
With a gulp, Uldren quickly put the ship into launch mode to prepare for their jump to Earth. “Don’t waste time then, enter the coordinates!”
Pulled Pork obeyed his partner and set up the ship for launch. As he was doing so, Uldren noticed a blip on the tracking module. It was another ship, approaching fast. Uldren’s heart leaped into his throat.
“Well, no time like the present!”
A quick thrust of one of the levers, and the ship formerly belonging to Hannah shot off towards the stars. Uldren was safe… for now at least.

A Murder of Misfits
Chapter 4 - The Hunt
Fandom: Destiny 2
Rating: M for language, graphic violence, and general unpleasant happenings
Ships: The Crow & Female Guardian (platonic)
Characters: Female Awoken Warlock, Female EXO Titan, the Crow, and pretty much everyone else makes an appearance
Tags: Platonic Relationships, Found Family, Action/Adventure, Survival Horror, Humor with a lot of underlying angst, Canon-typical Violence, a bit of blood and gore, gonna get ya in the honey-nut feelios, the Fridge Horror that comes with being immortal
Summary: Murder (noun): 1) the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another 2) an unpleasant experience or punishment 3) a group of crows
Icarus and Atara-7 never had a full fireteam. No one really wants to work with a trigger-happy pyromaniac whose answer to everything is to throw a miniature sun at it. Then there's the intimidatingly huge EXO with a creepy Ghost. And the one Hunter who did have the guts to join their fireteam... he got kinda murdered by an insane Awoken Prince. That's just bad luck right there. Like broken mirrors and the number 13. But thanks to the Spider’s most selfless generosity, all that is about to change. What a whimsical twist of fate that his newest “assistant” happens to be an outcast, too, a newly born Lightbearer. And a Hunter! To complete the package! One could even call it “destiny”.
Nevermind that the new guy is the Crow, Uldren Sov, that aforementioned Royal Nutcase who murdered their previous Hunter. Nevermind that his new team members are the ones who killed him before his rebirth as a Guardian conveniently wiped away all his memories.
This is fine. Everything’s fine.
“Do you know what a cosmic imprint is, child?”
“I… uh, no. Not really, Your Grace.”
“All things in this reality are created by stardust. From the infinite galaxies to the most fleeting thought. All that exists is intricately connected. Light. Darkness. Everything in between. We Awoken understand this better than anyone.”
“Because of the Distributary?”
“This universe also started out as a singularity. Our people merely had the privilege of experiencing the beginning of all things first-hand. When you open your eyes from the dream of individualism and see how all things are not merely connected, but sewn through each other and intertwined together, then you realize that nothing that exists is ever so easily erased.”
“I did feel kinda weird when I first came here. Like… this place is so familiar to me. Like… I’ve finally come back home. But it’s not home anymore. Even though I don’t know why, I know it’s not the same.”
“All memories are shared with at least one other. Chance meetings become seeds, and relationships born of those seeds take root and grow into bonds that vine their way through the garden of Fate which spans across all space and time. That is what is called a cosmic imprint. And for someone like you, it is a rather troublesome thing, isn’t it?”
