Off-Road Excellence: Why Your 4X4 Needs a Premium Exhaust System
For off-road enthusiasts, a 4X4 vehicle represents more than mere transportation—it’s an entryway to adventure, an instrument for mastering rough landscapes, and a representation of liberty. Whether you’re travelling rugged paths, fording muddy streams, or discovering distant deserts, your 4X4 is designed to tackle the most difficult obstacles. However, to genuinely realize its complete potential, each part of your vehicle needs to be optimized for performance, durability, and reliability. A frequently disregarded but essential enhancement is the exhaust system. A high-quality exhaust system isn't merely an add-on; it's a transformative element that can enhance your off-road adventures significantly.
The exhaust system is essential for the overall performance of your 4X4. Its role involves removing exhaust gases from the engine, minimizing noise, and enhancing fuel efficiency. Although stock exhaust systems are built to comply with standard requirements, they frequently do not meet the needs of off-road driving. High-quality exhaust systems, conversely, are designed to improve performance, longevity, and efficiency, making them a crucial enhancement for any dedicated off-roader.
A key advantage of a high-quality exhaust system is enhanced engine performance. Driving off the road demands significant power, particularly when facing steep slopes, heavy weights, or difficult landscapes. An efficient exhaust system minimizes backpressure, enabling the engine to function more effectively. This leads to enhanced airflow, higher horsepower, and greater torque, providing you with the additional strength required to overcome any challenge. Whether you're ascending a rugged incline or hauling substantial cargo, a high-quality exhaust system guarantees your 4X4 operates at peak performance.
Longevity is another significant benefit of enhancing a high-quality exhaust system. Off-road environments can be tough, facing ongoing exposure to mud, water, stones, and severe temperatures. Stock exhaust systems are frequently constructed from materials that may rust, crack, or break down under these circumstances. Premium exhaust systems, on the other hand, are designed to endure the challenges of off-road excursions. They are generally made from top-quality stainless steel or aluminized steel, both of which are resistant to rust, corrosion, and deterioration. This indicates that your exhaust system will endure for a longer duration, even in the toughest conditions, allowing you to save both time and money on repairs and replacements.
Another crucial aspect to take into account when enhancing your exhaust system is noise reduction. Although the sound of a strong engine can be exciting, too much noise can be bothersome, particularly during lengthy off-road journeys. High-quality exhaust systems are crafted to maintain a balance between performance and noise management, delivering a richer, more polished sound that improves your driving experience without being excessive. This is especially advantageous for individuals who utilize their 4X4 for both off-road excursions and everyday travel, as it guarantees a pleasant and comfortable experience in all environments.
Fuel efficiency is an additional aspect where a high-quality exhaust system can impact performance. Driving off the road frequently entails covering long distances and facing difficult conditions, which can impact your fuel efficiency. A premium exhaust system can enhance airflow and lessen engine stress, thereby optimizing fuel efficiency and enabling you to travel farther with each tank. Not only is this cost-efficient, but it is also good for the environment, creating a win-win situation for you and the Earth.
A high-quality exhaust system also enhances the worth of your 4X4. Regardless of whether you intend to hold onto your vehicle for years or sell it later, investing in a premium exhaust system can boost its overall attractiveness and performance. Prospective buyers frequently tend to spend more on a 4X4 that has been properly cared for and comes with high-quality features. Investing in a premium exhaust system is a wise decision for your existing and upcoming requirements.
When selecting the appropriate exhaust system for your 4X4, both quality and knowledge are important. This is the point at which Outback Exhausts enters the scene. Known for its excellence and dedication to innovation, Outback Exhausts is a reliable name in off-road vehicle enhancements. Their high-end exhaust systems are crafted specifically to meet the challenges of off-road driving, providing unparalleled performance, longevity, and efficiency. The advantages of a premium exhaust system are clear, ranging from increased engine power and fuel efficiency to lower noise levels and greater durability. For individuals searching for top-notch off-road performance, Outback Exhausts is the premier choice for high-quality exhaust options. Browse their selection of products and see how the appropriate exhaust system can turn your 4X4 into the perfect off-road vehicle. San Pedro de Atacama
Town in Chile
ATACAMA DESERT RAINBOW VALLEY: 1000 TIMES WOW!
Tumblr media
The Rainbow Valley, or Valle Arcoirisin Spanish, may not be the most popular site in the Atacama Desert, yet with its incredible colors, I can assure you that it is worth a visit! In addition, located at 3,500 m above sea level, the Arc-en-Ciel valley is a great "intermediate altitude" excursion to gently acclimatize to the altitude before going higher. As such, I remind you that San Pedro de Atacama where you are staying is at an altitude of 2500 m and that sites such as the geysers of Tatio or the Miscanti and Meniques lagoons, which I recommend you to discover last, are at an altitude of more than 4,000 m.
Tumblr media
How to get to Vallée Arc-en-Ciel
Leave early!
Departure at 7:30 am from the Tiny Hostel Atacama in San Pedro de Atacama. Why 7:30 a.m.? For 2 reasons: ● the morning coolness, which is relative, because the temperature rises quickly during the day despite the altitude. ● At the beginning of the morning, there are always fewer peopleon the sites and the tour operators have not yet landed the herds...
Located 66 km northwest of San Pedro de Atacama, the Rainbow Valley will be a good test for the body, to see how it copes with the rise in altitude.
Tumblr media
Ruta 23-CH
First the road: so far so good!
First of all, you have to take the Ruta 23-CH (the one that leads to Calama) for 35 km. There, you have to turn right onto the B-207 which is a nice asphalt road like the 23-CH. Normally, if I refer to the few indications I have about the Rainbow Valley, it takes 1 hour to get there from San Pedro de Atacama. That's in theory!
A very nice meeting on the way...
But that's without counting the encounter with a charming tribe of alpacas who are not shy and super coquettish with their colorful wool earrings. As you know, animals are a big part of my hobby, I love it and as a result, the photo shoot drags on. And then there are the baby alpacas! They look like cuddly toys, I'm completely in love!
Tumblr media
Young alpaca on the road to Rainbow Valley
Tumblr media
Alpaca wool
Well, despite this extended stop, no cars have yet passed on this road. The Rainbow Valley is really less crowded than other sites and besides, as you will see, nothing is really indicated...
I know that you have to continue on the B-207 to the bridge over the Rio Salado and that, just before this bridge, there is a track on the left that you have to take for 3 km before turning left again to reach the Rainbow Valley. yes, except that quite frankly there's nothing indicated... So I rely on my feeling and the (precious) app Map.me to get to my destination...
Tumblr media
Alpaca on the road to the Rainbow Valley
Then the track... Rock'n Roll: Things Are Getting Tough!
But once you're on the track, it gets really hard core. To tell you it's in very bad shape is an understatement. Hollows, bumps, gaping ruts, pebbles and sharp stones that purposely put themselves in the middle of it... It shakes badly! To this must be added 4 rock'n roll fords... Not very reassuring because the car, a Peugeot 2008, is low and not really adapted to this type of rodeo game! My legs are shaking and my buttocks are squeezing so much that I'm freaking out that something is blowing up on the car... And then, there is no passage: it seems that no one ever goes to this famous Rainbow Valley... This stretch of track is supposed to be 3 km long, but in conditions like this, the 3 km seems like 15 km. I should have taken pictures to immortalize this passage but as I was scared to death, I didn't think for a second about the camera.
Finally, 3 km later (phew !!), on the left fork for the Rainbow Valley, this time, it's signposted. Just over 1 km to the car park. At 9:30 a.m., yes, I'm there!
Tumblr media
The famous Rainbow Valley lives up to its name!
As soon as you arrive, it's an enchantment! The décor, which borders on surrealism, is strikingly beautiful! Even if you're not a fan of geology, it's impossible to remain indifferent to this riot of incredible colors due to the richness of minerals: ● green (copper oxide)● shades of red (clay and iron)● white (calcite and calcium carbonate)● blue● ochre (pyrite)
Tumblr media
The Rainbow Valley: free and open access
What's crazy is that this little geological gem of the Domeyko range is free and open access. So, of course, it's nice to be able to come and go as we please, BUT it involves big risks in terms of the preservation of this exceptional environment: ● looting. If every visitor finds it nice to bring back one or more colored stones as a souvenir... ● Degradation. Of course, there is a path, but nothing prevents you from getting off it...
In addition to these risks, nothing is indicated on the site. No explanation! What a pity!

Don't settle for the small loop...
As with all the sites around San Pedro de Atacama, I can only recommend getting acquainted with the place, taking the time to discover. And here, don't settle for the small loop around the car park.
I had spotted on the app Map.me a 2.5 km walk leading to the viewpoint on the Arcoiris valley. Not known, you don't come across a cat there! In addition, walking at this altitude allows you to acclimatize in order to go even higher in the days to come.
Here are the details of the route: ● From the car park, go 800 m to a first fork● At this fork, take the path on the left● Go 1 km to a second fork● At this second fork , turn left again● Travel another 700 m to gain a nice viewpoint of the Rainbow Valley with the snow-capped volcanoes in the background

The advantages of having "hung out" in the Rainbow Valley!
At 1:30 p.m., the parking lot emptied of the few tour operators who ventured into the Rainbow Valley this morning. In fact, the site has regained its fascinating desert calm.
Another important detail for photographers: the sun has turned and the colors are much prettier than this morning when they arrived.

Fear of the infernal trail on the way back and... Good surprise!
I'm really apprehensive about this damn track that I'm going to have to take on the way back too. Because if it's happened 1 time, tempt the devil a second time... I'm anxious!
But just before reaching the 1st ford, 2 cars roll off a track on the right!! So what is this track??? Not seen on the way out!
Tumblr media
The right track!
A quick check on Map.me, indeed it does join the B-207, but not in the same place. As a result, it avoids fording and the icing on the cake, it looks much better.
But what the hell, why didn't I see this track on the way out? And why is it materialized as dotted lines on Map.me while the other trail of death that kills is materialized in solid lines?? I'm not happy with that!
Tumblr media
Route B-207: place where the right track takes to avoid cold sweats!
So, I understand better why they say that the Rainbow Valley is accessible with any classic car! On the other hand, you really have to know where the track ends on the B-207 because there is really no indication!
If you haven't had enough of discovering the Rainbow Valley, know that you can take the opportunity to: ● discover the petroglyphs of Hierbas Buenas ● visit the village of Rio Grande
Once again, a great day of adventure around San Pedro de Atacama! Chile continues to set the bar very high!

In fact, the Super T’s only real limitation is long, steep hills-the gravity-fed fuel system doesn’t work over an eight percent grade. Shifted into one of the lower gears, the Super T easily made it up what can only be called a hiking or dirt-bike trail filled with loose boulders. Though bouncy, thanks to non-dampened leaf-spring suspension, its 21-inch wheels and impressive ground clearance make short work of a rutted-out, unmaintained fire road. It is mind-boggling how good the Super T is off-road. Unlike Bothwell’s first off-road excursion in Grandpa’s T, this one’s engine doesn’t use overhead valves, minimizing the potential need to make adjustments in the field. Even in 90-degree desert heat, the engine temperature barely registered on the radiator-mounted thermometer. With just a quick lesson, I was able to get comfortable driving the Super T without stalling, bogging, or breaking anything. Though the hand throttle lever on the right side of the steering wheel is somewhat clunky by today’s standards, in its time, you were likely the only car around for hours of driving it’s basically cruise control. It’s practical, reliable, and relatively comfortable in a variety of environments, from cobblestoned city streets to rutted, rocky dirt tracks. The Super T really leans into the spirit of American motoring: freedom to just go. I could even power out of the hairpins with an inner wheel smoking and spinning. The Super T cranks out about 40 hp, a healthy improvement over the stock 20 hp. It breathes through a Schebler carburetor and lubricates itself with a finned aluminum oil pan, transmission oil scoop, and external return line. The 2.9-liter four-cylinder engine is modified for power and durability, with a bigger cam, an aftermarket water pump, a flat-tube radiator, and a high-compression head featuring oversize valves. That’s 12 ratios, ranging from a high of about 60 mph on the freeway to a low crawl of about 1. But the additional floor-mount levers add capability: One controls the Warford three-speed transmission attached to the standard planetary drive unit, and the other controls a Ruxtell two-speed differential. There are two small controls on the wheel, a hand-brake lever, and the same three pedals the car left Detroit with a century ago. Size-12New Balances were the wrong choice. I crawl awkwardly into the Super T from the passenger’s side, over the aftermarket gear levers that now dominate the cabin, and settle in.

Out here, there is no danger of being run over by a latte-sipping Tesla driver on a conference call. Here, we’re alone in the desert, like we might have been back then. The last time I tried was in Southern California traffic, which was terrifying. Controls weren’t standardized at the time, something you take for granted once you try to drive one. To say a Model T is not like a modern car would be a drastic understatement. In fact, if you own a real 1924 Bugatti Type 35 and need spare parts, Volkswagen’s Bugatti can’t help you. Professionally, Bothwell is the director of Pur Sang Argentina, a company building period-correct replicas of pre-war grand prix cars using, wherever possible, the exact methods and blueprints from the originals. John Bothwell has five Model Ts in his personal collection, along with a variety of other early cars, from Locomobiles to Rolls-Royces. Extensive catalogs, many of which still exist, showed you could customize your T to any specific need, style, or condition you might encounter. There were mechanical improvements, cosmetic tweaks, durability upgrades, and more. The Model T birthed the automotive aftermarket. Ford’s assembly-line construction changed the automotive industry forever, and the sheer ubiquity of the Model T meant millions of owners would take fixing its shortcomings into their own hands. But from the factory it was also too basic for many owners. There are no real brakes, no fuel pump, and only two forward gears. Most Model Ts are famously all black, saving on paint cost. To experience a Model T is to first learn where that money didn’t go. Clicking on an active bonus will queue you up for it.A Model T cost as little as $260, or about $7850 in today’s money-90 percent less than a European sports car. Once the queue has ended, they will disappear. Dungeons with active bonuses will display in a list beneath the draggable header frame. Call to Arms will display active bonus queues in a compact and lightweight fashion.

Stalker (1979, Soviet Union)
Before one makes assumptions about this film’s title, the word “stalker” here refers to both the modern definition of the word and as a nickname (from Rudyard Kipling’s Stalky & Co.) for a character who smuggles people to a specific place. Andrei Tarkovsky’s ponderous, glacially-paced Stalker is among the greatest science-fiction movies – delving into questions of existentialism, rational choice, the danger of subconscious desire, faith, and the limits of human understanding. For Stalker, Tarkovsky has fully embraced minimalism – the film has 142 shots in its 163-minute runtime (the longest shots are uncut for over four minutes; the first spoken line appears after nine-and-a-half minutes) – making this movie inaccessible for those without grounding in or preparation for “slow cinema”. Tarkovsky’s final film produced solely in the Soviet Union is a deeply introspective work, bewildering in the best way, always astonishing.
In an unnamed country, the “Stalker” (Alexander Kaidanovsky) sneaks people into a place known as the Zone. The Zone, bereft of human residents, is heavily guarded along its outer perimeter, but the police and military dare not enter it. One day, the Stalker – shown to be living in poverty with children, and urged by his wife (Alisa Freindlich) not to leave – has agreed to guide the “Writer” (Antoly Solonitsyn) and the “Professor” (Nikolai Grinko) to the Zone.
The laws of physics and time do not apply in the Zone. And it is rumored that, somewhere in the Zone, there is a “Room” that grants the innermost wishes of anyone who steps foot inside. The reasons for a guide are many: the straightest path will result in certain death, any routes that once led to the Room become impassable because geography can change in a matter of minutes, and the Zone’s innumerable traps (mental and physical) can only be sensed and never seen. Depending on the viewer’s interpretation, the Zone and/or the Room may be sentient. The Stalker demands that the Writer and Professor obey his orders. During their journey, they talk about their motivations for finding the Room. The Writer has lost his artistic inspiration, the Professor reveals a nebulous desire for scientific analysis, and the Stalker – who says he does not wish to use the Room – does not reveal his intentions for guiding others through the Zone until the final minutes.
There are no villains or monsters, spectacular special effects, or anything that one might expect from a science-fiction film. This is Tarkovsky’s second science-fiction work after Solaris (1972) – a space story that analyzed the essence of love when it collides with questions of experienced reality (Solaris is a rejection of what Tarkovsky believed to be Western sci-fi’s coldness, as embodied in 2001: A Space Odyssey) – but Stalker is almost nothing like that earlier film. This film is only considered science-fiction because of the physical impossibilities of the Zone, not because of any space travel or futuristic technologies. In a development I had never considered for a science-fiction film, almost none of the questions that Stalker poses to the audience have anything to do with science or technology. While recognizing that the greatest science-fiction works examine the nature of humanity, all the science-fiction media I had consumed prior to seeing Stalker contained elements of how humanity intersects with science and technology. This relationship is almost, if not non-existent in Stalker, appearing only at the conclusion. Stalker is entirely interested in the hearts and minds of the three leads – what they are subjected to while traversing the Zone, however disturbing, does not influence the people they are and the final decisions they will make. The Room is only a projection of their humanity; it does not shape who they are. This is reinforced by the Stalker’s true introductory words upon entering the Zone:
Our moods, our thoughts, our emotions, our feelings can bring about change here. And we are in no condition to comprehend them... everything that happens here depends on us, not on the Zone.
Loosely adapted from Arkadi and Boris Strugatsky’s intricate novel Roadside Picnic (Arkadi and Boris were brothers and co-wrote the adapted screenplay), Tarkovsky simplified what he could for the big screen. This meant compositing multiple characters into the three primary characters for the film and trimming down several years of excursions into the Zone down to a single sojourn. Interference from the Soviet censors and the accidental destruction of the original negatives at the film processing laboratory necessitated the introduction of intertitles announcing a first and second part. Episodes of state interference frustrated Tarkovsky as well (the censors did not request as many changes in Stalker compared to previous Tarkovsky films, but they could not tolerate narrative ambiguity of any sort, even if they could not find any specific anti-communist themes), who was forced to shoot almost the entire film three separate times, and led to him looking towards the West for work. It is the third and last effort that is available to audiences today.
With all these compromises and production nightmares, Tarkovsky was given multiple opportunities to make the best possible film he could. Production difficulties also meant Alexander Knyazhinsky became principal cinematographer over Leonid Kalashnikov (1969′s The Red Tent), who himself replaced another cinematographer before that. One of Knyazhinsky’s decisions mirrors The Wizard of Oz (1939) – the opening scenes are shot in sepia and all scenes in the Zone are shot in color. In entering the Zone, Knyazhinsky and Tarkovsky allow for an extended tracking shot that allows a glimpse into the uncertainty of the three men journeying to the Room:
youtube
This tracking shot sets the pace and tone for the remainder of the film (notice how the clacks of the wheels become indistinguishable from Tarkovsky regular Eduard Artemyev’s film score – the Azerbaijani tar is feature heavily, and the above instance will not be the last time rhythmic sound effects become inseparable from the music). Shot in Estonia, Stalker utilizes a lush, but lifeless landscape littered with human reminders of what life was like before the Zone was created. Wind is everywhere, even if the sound mix does not pick up on it. The grasses sway, the tree leaves rustle, and a low-lying fog brushes across the flora. Also omnipresent is water – whether on the grasses due to recent rains, flooded buildings, walkways turned into creeks, or deafening waterfalls. The second half’s interior scenes were shot at deserted hydro power plants already filled with fetid liquid and marked by years of abandonment (conditions were so poor that sound designer Vladimir Sharun believes chemical poisoning from these locations hastened the deaths of three crew members, including Tarkovsky). Almost suggestive of a post-apocalyptic world with industrial and military scrap strewn across the Zone, the effect is a serene suspense. The suspense, beginning with the above tracking shot, is cumulative. With death or separation possible at any turn, a slow walk to check for traps and a trip through a waterlogged pipe inspire interminable dread.
Amid this dread, what begins as a partnership defined by obeying the Stalker’s orders transforms into a series of bursts of overwhelming philosophy, ad hominem, poetry recitations from the mouth and mind (the poems used are by Fyodor Tyutchev and Tarkovsky’s father, Arseny), and rare instances of humor. The Stalker speaks of the Zone as a holy, perhaps partially sentient place not to be mistreated. The way he describes his work is not only to serve as a guide, but to offer a sort of deliverance (for himself? Those who hire him? The Zone?). Among these three, their initial intentions are not as they first appear. Cynicism and dismissive attitudes towards the Zone and the Room belie personal weakness and tragic character flaws. A front of altruism is stripped away, revealing exhausting fear, material desperation, spiritual emptiness. Just as important as what the Stalker, Writer, and Professor say to each other is what they do not say to each other – in Stalker, silent shots of the character’s faces say just as much as the philosophical soliloquies. This is outstanding acting from Kaidanovsky, Solonitsyn, and Grinko.
The film’s primary themes revolve around the subconscious and one’s deepest desires. Those desires are usually never the ones we speak about when questioned by others. Instead, they are the ones that reveal our most sinister, selfish urges – stripped of social constructs, morals, restraint, and the judgment rendered by even those closest to us. Or perhaps excursions through the Zone (failed and otherwise) and entrances into the Room grant something far more minatory: latent revelations and wishes which may never be understood.
Perhaps it is that pure expression and dogged pursuit of individualism which scared the Soviet Union. Indeed, Soviet science-fiction literature has a history of critiquing authoritarianism, communist and capitalist systems, and cults of personality. The self-understanding achieved in Stalker is not common in fiction or real life – the realities are deeply unpleasant, but not approached cynically. The realization of these realities provokes different responses from the characters: anger and anguish. Stalker, through its framing and narrative escalations, is evocative of classic horror films – where a dense, foreboding atmosphere is the source of the horror. The horror in Stalker includes the desolate locations it features, but most importantly the purposes of the three men who seek the Room.
Released to heavy criticism in the Soviet Union, contemporary opinion has been kinder to Stalker. Western critics compare the Heart of Darkness-esque narrative to Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. But Stalker has much more to say than Coppola’s film, preferring to examine its subjects for who they are and what they bring to their newfound surroundings rather than the reverse. Rather than Joseph Conrad, Tarkovsky takes his literary cues not only from the  Strugatsky brothers, but also those giants of Russian literature: Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Without spoiling too much, the Stalker’s enterprise seems informed by the title character in Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich (Ivan Ilyich is a dying man pondering the nature of his death and, increasingly, his life’s meaning) while his characterization resembles the title character in Dostoevsky’s The Idiot (whose epileptic bouts make people believe he is unintelligent, when he, despite being socially awkward, is anything but).
For first-time viewers, Stalker will baffle, enrage, and mystify. It should be viewed as cinematic poetry rather than a straight-laced narrative. This film conveys complicated ideas of desire and the changes resulting from desire that too few are receptive to. The few answers Stalker does provide are shrouded in its darkest corners, waiting to be discovered by those brave enough to present themselves and step forth. Do not expect anything flattering.
My rating: 10/10
^ Based on my personal imdb rating. Stalker is the one hundred and forty-sixth film I have rated a ten on imdb.

2020
Hello. I hope you and yours are well. As is tradition, below are my selections for albums and songs of the year. As I have yet to receive a reply from you, dear reader, sincerely asking to unsubscribe, you are therefore the proud recipient of the list once more! I’ve altered the format from 5 tracks each month because, as I suspect many of you did, I went into a nostalgic hole for large chunks of this year (for me this consisted of at least two months of nothing but Funkadelic, which does mean my personalised algorithm is now ace), but also when I looked back at when many of these tracks were released it was front heavy for the first half of the year – another body blow to the supposed “monthly” mailer. I even considered not writing my one-liners, but where is the fun in that? Furthermore, trying to keep the long list to 60 tracks in total (equivalent to 5 per month) proved overly frustrating, so I’ve included some extras, especially as this year felt 13 month long. Notwithstanding said excuses, enough preamble, on with the list! Let me know what you think and do send me your own selections. Dirt 5 is a really completely different recreation to the earlier three entries in Codemasters’ off-road racing sequence. Dirt Rally and its sequel spun the sequence off in a simulation-based route, interesting to rally purists with its genuine method, uncompromising issue, and steep studying curve. Dirt 4 adopted swimsuit with one other smattering of point-to-point rally races, however crucially made the expertise accessible for informal racing followers by introducing a extra forgiving dealing with mannequin. With a 3rd Dirt Rally already in growth, Codemasters is trying to diversify the sequence’ mainline entries by returning to the arcade spectacle and histrionics of Dirt’s early years with Dirt 5.
This a lot is obvious from the outset, as Dirt 5 latches onto the identical jovial competition vibes that permeated all through Dirt 2–complete with a customizable lanyard, vibrant colours, and an upbeat soundtrack. The profession mode takes you on a globetrotting journey that encompasses a wide range of completely different racing disciplines, however there isn’t any signal of any co-drivers relaying pacenotes, nor are there any conventional point-to-point rally occasions. Dirt 5 distances itself from the sequence’ current previous by being an unabashed arcade racer that is made up of brief, action-packed skirmishes the place you are consistently buying and selling paint with a pack of different drivers. There’s an infectious vitality to the entire thing that is mirrored in a dealing with mannequin that sees you hurl its vehicles across the observe with relative ease.
Dirt 5 performed on PC
Dirt 4 could have featured a driving college that supplied classes on weight switch and the right way to execute pendulum shifts, however Dirt 5 renders that information pointless. Getting round most corners is so simple as slowing down earlier than pulling on the handbrake to lurch your automobile sideways and drift round every mud-swept flip. There’s not much more to it than that, buying and selling any significant depth for approachability that veers too far towards simplicity. Collisions are tame, particularly when mixed with a listless injury system, and the physics mannequin usually throws up some oddities each time a automobile goes airborne. This is not sufficient to sap the enjoyable out of the expertise, however there’s all the time a nagging feeling that Dirt 5 is not extracting probably the most out of those automobiles. Any rip-roaring moments are weighed in opposition to others which are only a tad boring as a consequence of its facile and uninspired dealing with. As such, the plethora of tracks, and their various climate programs, achieve added significance all through Dirt 5’s profession mode.
You’ll drive across the hills and favelas surrounding Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, hurtle via the picturesque fishing village of Henningsvær with the Northern Lights as a surprising backdrop, and drift throughout the frozen East River beneath the Roosevelt Island Bridge in New York. There are additionally excursions to China and its dense bamboo forests, races via the scorching Arizona desert, and treacherous visits to the Himalayas. This medley of locales is important, not solely from a visible level of view–what with their spectacular scope and exaggerated depictions–but due to the number of surfaces and climate you will encounter throughout your travels.
There is not a discernible influence in your automobile’s dealing with when racing on gravel, mud, or filth, and that continues to be true whether or not you are darting across the observe in an iconic Subaru Impreza S4 or sitting behind the wheel of the electrical Audi AI:TRAIL quattro–which each seems and sounds prefer it must be in Death Stranding. The solely outliers are heavy snow and ice, with the latter having its personal devoted occasion kind, Ice Breakers. Heavy snow causes your automobile to understeer because the tires get slowed down within the slush, whereas the alternative happens on ice, the place an absence of traction makes the handbrake superfluous. These surfaces power you to change your method and add some much-needed subtlety to Dirt 5’s dealing with mannequin.
They’re additionally complemented by a climate system that has the studio’s DNA written throughout it. Dirt 5 is the primary recreation within the sequence not developed at Codemasters’ Southam headquarters. Instead, growth duties have fallen to the corporate’s Cheshire studio, which beforehand flew underneath the banner of Evolution Studios and developed the likes of Motorstorm, Driveclub, and most just lately Onrush. Extreme climate is a staple of these video games, and that continues to be true in Dirt 5, with electrical storms, heavy snowfall, and torrents of rain all being frequent occurrences as you bounce from one observe to a different. It’s boisterous and over-the-top however provides the type of white-knuckle drama that hasn’t been seen in racing video games since Motorstorm Apocalypse.
Aside from being a feast for the eyes, climate generally has an impact on the floor of a observe, too. As snow continues to fall, you will see it steadily construct up on the highway with every successive lap, making the latter levels of a race very completely different from the sooner ones. Rain and snow may impede your imaginative and prescient when racing at night time, forcing you to make use of the lights dotted across the observe for steerage. By the top of most races, your automobile represents a busy canvas of your most up-to-date exploits, coated wheel to wheel within the remnants of whichever component and floor you had been simply driving via. It’s inherently enjoyable, and makes it straightforward to neglect in regards to the limp dealing with if you’re battling for first place as lightning strikes illuminate the night time sky.

Inclement climate in Dirt 5

There’s an honest number of occasions on provide as nicely, even when it is troublesome to inform a few of them aside. Ultra Cross gives circuit-based races in rally vehicles, that includes classics such because the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI and Ford RS200, and trendy machines just like the Citroen C3 R5 and WRX Peugeot 208. Stampede, in the meantime, will put your hefty 4×4’s suspension to the check, with races happening on rugged terrain stuffed with jumps and undulating obstacles like boulders and piles of mud. Dirt 5 even introduces American Sprint Cars for the primary time within the sequence. These ludicrously overpowered machines are outfitted with huge spoilers to stop them from taking pictures off into the stratosphere, and guiding them round an oval observe is not so simple as it sounds.
If you do not fancy sure occasion sorts, the profession mode additionally emphasizes participant selection, supplying you with the choice to decide on branching paths that concentrate on the occasions you wish to play. Outside of this, nevertheless, the profession mode is pretty hole. You can choose completely different sponsors that reward you with beauty objects like liveries and stickers, however that is so far as it goes. The considerably shocking inclusion of a narrative rounds out the profession, as Nolan North and Troy Baker face off as rival rally drivers. The narrative is informed through temporary podcasts hosted by Donut Media’s James Pumphrey and Nolan Sykes, and so they handle to seize a conversational tone that is each pure and plausible. Listening to those soundbites whereas sitting on the occasion choose display comes throughout as an inelegant option to inform a narrative, although. Your function can also be inconsequential, and it wraps up with an anticlimactic finale that makes you query why this story was even included.
Dirt 5 distances itself from the sequence’ current previous by being an unabashed arcade racer that is made up of brief, action-packed skirmishes.
Outside of the profession mode, Playgrounds is new to the sequence, providing a Trackmania-esque degree creator and sharing instrument that exhibits some promise. There’s already a convincing recreation of an X Games observe, and the required inclusion of Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road, simply to call a couple of. Hopefully there’s an viewers for it that may ultimately develop and put its instruments to the check to assemble some fascinating tracks. Aside from the standard slew of on-line races, there are additionally a variety of celebration video games that may be performed both on-line or with as much as 4 gamers through cut up display. This sees the introduction of Vampire, a brand new variant on Dirt 3’s Outbreak mode that duties one participant with infecting the others by bumping into them.
It’s this lightheartedness that helps to distinguish Dirt 5 from the hardcore simulation of Dirt Rally. Splitting up the 2 disparate sides of this sequence with such a daring line seems like a wise transfer on Codemasters’ half. It permits Dirt Rally to go in a extra genuine and uncompromising route, whereas the mainline entries proceed to indulge within the sequence’ arcade sensibilities. Dirt 5 would not fairly stick the touchdown as a consequence of its simplistic dealing with mannequin, however there’s nonetheless loads of enjoyable available when racing door to door in an extreme snowstorm or throwing a Porsche 911 R-GT down the aspect of a mountain in a frenetic race to the underside. It would not attain the heights of Dirt 2, however that recreation’s affect is keenly felt in Dirt 5. If the sequence continues alongside this path, it will not be lengthy till it is hovering excessive once more.

Magnante’s Junkyard Crawl: Multi-Carbs From Buick!
First used in 1940, mechanics loved how Buick’s side-hinged hood could be opened from either side via semi-trapped pivot points. The hood on the 1941 Buick (to the left) shows off the alternate position.
Quick, which General Motors division was first to offer a mass-produced multi-carbureted engine option? That’s easy, ‘gotta be the triple-side-draft 1953 Chevy Corvette, right? Nope!
Over a decade earlier, the 100mph 1941 Buick Century introduced motorists to the benefits of low-speed economy (while running on the rear carburetor) and improved full-throttle breathing (with both carbs deployed). Buick was first!
Here it is, GM’s first mass-produced multiple carburetion setup. The extra cfm helped push the 320-cube Buick Century past the 100mph mark. The twin 2-barrel carbs atop this 1941 Series 40 Special’s 248-inch Fireball Eight are topped by a sleek oil bath air cleaner housing. The (ripped) flexible fabric tube connects to a flared duct to collect air from behind the grille. Yep, an early form of Ram Air! The oil bath reservoir is partially hidden behind the inlet snorkel. Dry paper air filters didn’t arrive until the late fifties.
Marketed as “Compound Carburetion” and only offered in 1941 and ’42, the system featured two down-draft 2-barrel carburetors. Standard issue on all 320 cubic-inch straight eights and optional on the smaller 248-cube straight eight, power jumped from 141 to 165 (320-cube eight) and from 115 to 125 (248-cube eight) with minimal impact on fuel economy—assuming judicious use of the gas pedal.
This partially disassembled compound-carbureted 248 offers a good look at the dual-plane intake manifold. It may look like a California hot rod setup, but it’s factory stock! Buick sold over 370,000 cars in 1941, at least a third with compound carburetion. This stuff isn’t rare, but complete surviving examples are scarce today.
A couple decades later, the 1964 Buick RPO W5 added dual Carter AFBs to the mighty 425 “nailhead” V8 to bump output from 340 to 360 horsepower. Though the Buick dual-quad 425 was offered in all full-size Wildcat, Electra, and Estate Wagon models, the vast majority went into the sporty Riviera GS. Unfortunately, the mid-size Skylark GS muscle car offering was restricted to a single 4-barrel 401 “nailhead” for its top offering through 1966. Oh, what could have been…
New for 1940, Buick stylists eliminated the previous lumpy transition from the backlite to the trunk lid with this daring fastback design. Marketed as a “torpedo,” it was offered with 2 or 4 doors. When new, this 3-speed, compound-carbureted Series 40 Special was something of a muscle car. Oddly, Buick didn’t advertise the 2×2 induction with any external graphics.
In this month’s Junkyard Crawl, let’s explore two rare multi-barrel Buicks we discovered at CTC Auto Ranch in Denton, TX ([email protected], 940/482-3007).
Groovy Factoids
Though rival GM brands Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac each offered multi-carb engines in the 1950s, after WWII Buicks were strictly single-carbureted until 1964. And the dual-quad option only lasted through 1966.
Buick engineers designed the 1953-1966 “nailhead” V8 to maximize low-end torque. For quicker port flow velocity, port and valve sizes were intentionally reduced, then extra camshaft overlap and duration compensated. This strategy gave the nailhead V8 it’s characteristic rumbling exhaust note.
At first glance, this 1964 Wildcat doesn’t look like a tire-frying menace. But with proper use of the option book, big surprises were possible. Note the hood pins…
Most people install hood pins to protect valuable things. Sure enough, when popped, the hood reveals an RPO W5 dual-quad 425 V8. Though the twin Rochesters shown are not correct (Buick used Carter AFBs), the finned aluminum rocker covers fan the flames. The standard Wildcat power plant was the 325hp 401.
To verify this as a factory-built dual-quad 425 (RPO W5, $188.13 extra), we need to see code MZ at the end of the serial number. Here, we see 8K1009M2. Is that “2” a poorly struck “Z”? If we owned this car, we’d pull up carpeting and invade the seats looking for a build sheet with W5 proof.
Inside, we see the standard front bench seat and column-shifted automatic transmission, a $231.13 up-charge over the standard-issue three-on-the-tree stick shift. Also available for the same $231.13 was the wide-ratio Muncie M20 four-on-the-floor. They built some! The September, 1964 issue of Car Life magazine featured a full road test of a dual-quad, 4-speed, 4-door Wildcat! That’s big league muscle.
In this expanded coverage of Junkyard Crawl featuring a pair of rare multi-carbureted Buicks, let’s continue our exploration of a 1941 Compound Carburetion Special Torpedo and 1964 RPO W5 dual-quad Wildcat four door. While we’re at it, lets’ examine some of GM’s other multi-carbureted excursions from the past.
The 1941 Special’s sun-baked interior reveals a three-speed manual transmission with column-mounted shifter. Buick’s first automatic transmission was offered in the 1938 Special. The speedometer reads to 120 mph, and is about 30 mph optimistic in this 248-cube Series 40. But in the larger 320-cube Century (with Compound Carburetion), 100 mph was very realistic.
The Wildcat made its debut in 1962 strictly as a two-door personal luxury model intended to battle the Ford Thunderbird, Chrysler 300, and Pontiac Grand Prix. After establishing a “halo” image, Buick brought Wildcat down market with four-door offerings like this.
Though darkly lit, this shot depicts Buick’s transverse-mounted muffler. Tucked between the trunk floor and rear axle, its sideways location saved space and allowed lower floor pans. The base Wildcat 401 had a single outlet; this car’s optional 425 ($48.38 if it’s the 4-barrel W8 or $188.13 for the dual-quad W5) would have twin outlets.
Though the trim tag won’t give us any clues as to whether this Buick was born with a W5 dual-quad 425, we can still learn. Let’s decode. Style: 64-4669 = 1964 Wildcat 4-door Sedan. Body: BK 4505 = Kansas City, KS assembly plant, body number 4505. Paint: RC1 = Desert Beige. Trim: 403 = Fawn. Engine size info wouldn’t appear on Buick data tags until 1972 when it was the fifth character of the VIN.
Hidden behind the Wildcat’s sedate front wheel covers are massive 12-inch aluminum drums. First used in late 1957 models, an integrally cast sintered iron wear surface handles friction loads while the aluminum housing and fins dissipate heat more quickly than iron. At the rear, Buick used conventional iron drums.
The Buick nailhead gets its nickname from its smaller-than-average valve head diameters. To wit, the 401’s stock 1.87-/1.50-inch valves are significantly smaller than many competing small-block engines. In 1967, Buick sought to remedy the situation with a much more modern second-generation V8 which had very little in common with the nailhead. This comparison of first- (closer to camera) and second-generation heads speaks volumes.
Despite its limited breathing, the nailhead makes tons of torque and shouldn’t be written off. It is odd that Buick sat out the multi-carb battle of the 1950s. The only production years for the factory dual-quads were 1964-’66.
By contrast, Pontiac launched its first multiple-carbureted V8 induction option in 1957. Dubbed “Tri-Power,” it saw duty through 1966 on full-size models and the popular GTO intermediate muscle car.
Cadillac stayed out of the supercar sixties, but many people forget Cadillac was very active during the Detroit horsepower race of the 1950s. Starting in 1955, its El Dorado halo model was home to Caddy’s most exotic powerplant. In 1955 and ’56 that meant dual-quads. But in 1957-’60 the switch was made to triple-two-barrels, as seen here. Also offered as options on lesser models, multi-carb’ed Caddy V8s were snapped up by hot rodders looking for one-stop junkyard horsepower.
