Professor Tim Thornton, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, is the person to have discovered new evidence in the case. Thornton has found documentation that a chain, once a treasured possession of Edward V, was later owned by the half sister of Sir James Tyrell's wife, Anne.
Tumblr media
Sir James Tyrell was very loyal to Richard III, and nobody can be sure how his wife's half sister, Lady Margaret Capell, came to be in possession of the chain. However, her will states: "I bequeath to my sonne Sir Giles his fadres Cheyne which was Yonge kynge Edward the Vth." The wealthy widow wrote her will 33 years after the Princes disappeared.
Tumblr media
The piece is a royal chain of office, a priceless artefact that would've been not only irreplaceable, but always linked with its owner - there would've never been any doubt about to whom it belonged. Although Richard lll has always been a frontrunner in theories relating to the Princes' possible murder, Sir James Tyrell's name was at one time added to the mix when Sir Thomas More alleged he'd hired two men to kill the boys. However, historians have always largely dismissed this theory as Tudor propaganda until now.

Old paper has secrets... if only you shine a light through it
I didn't know old books could get so forensic. The last thing I expected was for them to hold details—images—hidden to the naked eye.
Tumblr media
The pronounced vertical lines are chain lines, and the horizontal ones are from the screen from the paper-making process.
And then, if you can make it out, the paper has a watermark which tells you who milled it (and thus where and when), and it's called a watermark because the paper was wet when it was imprinted!
Where the watermark is and the direction of the chain lines (vertical/horizontal) tells you how the paper was folded.
Here's another example from the same book I was looking at:
Tumblr media
This second image has the book's most repeated watermark, the bull's head. It's in the center of the page with vertical chain lines, so this book is classified as a folio, where each sheet was folded once to make four pages. (Other common folding styles are quarto and octavo.)
We can turn to Charles-Moïse Briquet's Les Filigranes, a multi-volume watermark dictionary. (This is also available on the Internet Archive.)
With a little French, we can find pages that match our watermark. Here we have "Tête de bœuf," which Google Translate says is "Beef head". (It's a bull head.) Then we play a game of spot the difference. The second watermark looks similar to 14183 (of the 4th volume), so for the sake of the exercise, we'll look at that one. The entry contains "Belfort, 1458" or a variation from "Marbourg, 1459".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the other page, with the crest, I found "Armoiries Bande," or the band version of a coat of arms.
The closest match I found is entry 995 from Vol. 1.
Tumblr media
We get dates and locations ranging from 1586-1609 in Strasbourg and the surrounding area. From a quick search of the web, the book specifically has the Strasbourg Bend watermark. Already, we can begin to place where the paper to print the book was sourced from and at about what time, revealing a partial history of the book from just these details hidden in the pages. If I had my own rare books collection, I'd be shining a light through every one, looking at the different watermarks and noting new ones I see in a sort of curator's Pokédex.

dirlies look away. bones au fic about when liam finally joins the team - max and liam (liam misunderstands their relationship), 1k words. dedicating this fic to @mvlionheart and hmdf server
The lab is even cooler than he thought. Every grad student from the Jeffersonian Institute dreams of seeing it, nevermind actually getting hours to intern there. So this is a big achievement in Liam’s eyes and he’ll definitely be bragging about it to his friends – the ones who agree that working with dead people is cool, not the ones who try to get him a therapist every time he mentions his future profession.
But as much as he would like to think his internship was all his accomplishment, that's not entirely true. Even though he did work hard to be here.
His predecessor – Dr. Oscar Piastri – left, and now Liam is the new intern. Or a “squintern”, as Agent Ricciardo called him, but Liam doesn’t really get why – he doesn’t squint, his eyesight is great!
Despite how excited he feels about working here, the other members of the team don’t share his enthusiasm. It's clear that they all miss Dr. Piastri, it's written on their sad faces every time they have to talk to him, especially Dr. Carlos Sainz – his face is especially sad. Apparently he and Dr. Piastri were close friends. Mr. Leclerc – Charles – had to tell him that, because Dr. Sainz almost started crying when Liam tried to talk to him.
“Oscar used to ask me for samples from the fractures they found in the tibia,” Dr. Sainz had sobbed when Liam showed up in his office. Liam had then left the tray with the tibia on the table and slowly backed away with his arms raised. He has been avoiding Dr. Sainz since then.
Unlike the others, Dr. Verstappen has been very professional with him – not that Liam was expecting otherwise.
He still can't believe he gets to work with one of the best anthropologists in the world. Liam has been somewhat of a fan of Dr. Verstappen ever since he decided to pursue anthropology. He has read every article and paper of his and tried to attend all the lectures he gave at the university.
It's not special, Liam knows, almost every anthropology student idolizes Dr. Verstappen, but he still can't leave his hopes of being equals one day – not a professor and his student, but two respected scientists working together.
They are currently standing in the bone room, examining a set of remains – their recent case. Liam is just writing down their findings when Dr. Verstappen speaks up.
“Mr. Lawson, have you ever been in a sexual relationship with your boss?” he asks, without looking at Liam, his voice is flat.
“Wh-what?” Liam croaks, dropping the pen. He bends down to pick it up and when he straightens back up, Dr. Verstappen is standing far too close. “I-Uh…No?” Liam says, blushing.
“Hm. Okay,” Dr. Verstappen replies, and as if nothing happened, he moves away and picks up one of the ulnas to continue his examination.
***
Charles is working on a face reconstruction for their recent victim when a knock interrupts him. He swivels around in his chair and sees Liam awkwardly standing by the door.
It feels weird having him here in the lab. They all were very sad when Oscar decided to go back home after finishing his dissertation. He had said that there was an upsetting lack of good forensic anthropologists in Australia, and now that he has the doctorate he plans on changing that. They said their goodbyes and made Oscar promise to call them every few weeks.
Still, the mood in the lab wasn't the same since he left. And now there's Liam – a new intern who's supposed to “replace” Oscar and help them on the cases.
From his work so far, Liam isn't bad, he is just not Oscar. And it's clear he knows that too, can feel the way everyone is awkward and withdrawn around him, especially Carlos.
So Charles feels the need to help Liam join the team, and for the past week he's been somewhat of a consultant on the lab’s inner workings.
“What's up?” Charles asks, looking at the way Liam keeps nervously slicking his hair back.
“I-uh. I'm not sure,” Liam stammers. He puts his hands in the pockets of his gray lab coat but then takes them out again and moves closer to Charles. “Did Oscar… was he-uh.  Was he Max's…boy toy?”
Charles chokes on a breath, he definitely didn't expect that. He would think Liam is joking, but judging by his hectic blush and nervous energy it doesn't seem to be the case.
“And I thought Dr. Verstappen had a thing with Agent Ricciardo? I mean, I wouldn't want to be a homewrecker-” Liam blabbers, waving his hands through the air in jerky movements.
“Hey, calm down okay? Nobody is wrecking anyone,” Charles says and holds up his hands in hopes to stop Liam’s rambling. “Why do you think Max is hitting on you?”
“He-uh…” Liam says, moving his hand through his hair again, “...asked me if I ever had sex with my boss.”
“Oh!” Charles exclaims and then tries really hard not to laugh. “Yeah it's… the victim had an affair with his boss,” Charles chuckles, “Sometimes… Max is not the best at talking to other people. He probably was just curious.”
“So… Dr. Verstappen is not hitting on me?” Liam asks, confused.
Charles refuses to see his expression as disappointed.
“No, no. Max is your professor. A very…blunt and straightforward one. I promise, he was not trying to hit on you,” Charles says. He had tried to explain soft starts to Max too many times and he will probably have to do it again.
“Okay. But what about Agent Ricciardo?” Liam asks, raising his brow.
“That…is a complicated story. Better not to touch it,” Charles smiles, hoping Liam understands the “drop it” message. He loves to gossip, but he's not about to discuss his best friend's love life with a rookie.
“Yeah, okay. Thanks, I guess,” Liam says and moves toward the doors.
“Hey, no problem. And Liam?” Charles smiles genuinely this time. “I know it's hard, feeling like an outsider in the team. But try giving it a little time, ok? I'm sure everyone will warm up to you soon.”
“Okay. Thank you, Charles.” Liam smiles back and leaves the office.

okay i'm still very awake so you're all gonna have to deal with me red-stringing about character bullshit until i fall asleep. i Know i'm making a big post about this but i don't care
Tumblr media
why. this is the first instance of mark being designated as the one in charge when a higher-up (fred, in this case) isn't present. but why. they were only trapped in the slipspace fuckeryzone for a few days relative to normal space-time and i don't think anything drastic happens (with these guys) in glasslands? at least according to the wiki it doesn't. why did being integrated into blue team suddenly disrupt team saber's former command structure?
did they plan to kill mark off at the very start of this? was this all a long game to give mark enough of a foothold as an Important Character to make his death have more impact? does troy denning just like him more? how much weight did his personal preferences even play in this? why do the gammas suddenly start bantering when they're in danger and alone with a woman they just met? why do mark and ash seem to switch personalities every other chapter? why is this worse than i remember it being when i first read it a few months ago?

There's a school of thought that sees Albert as completely in the right in this scene with Laura's body but dude was incredibly awful to everyone! Yeah, a punch isn't justified but good god.
