Francesco Solimena (IT, 1657 - 1747)
Diana and Endymion, 1705-10. Oil on canvas: 180 x 230 cm. Collection Walker Art Gallery [eucanthos’ edit]
In feminist theory, there is a concept known as the 'male gaze' which refers to female objectification in the visual arts repeatedly depicting women as vulnerable, desired, seductive and subjugated.
However, in Solimena's painting the elements of the male gaze are reversed.
Young and beautiful Endymion, spent his life in perpetual sleep. In some versions it was his own wish and in others Selene’s granted by Zeus (she visits her sleeping lover once every month when the new moon is not visible)
The mythological tale of Endymion is a confusing one, and not entirely clear whether all the myths relate to a single man, for Endymion was called a king, a shepherd, a hunter and an astronomer. The goddess’ identity is also blurred between Astarte, Artemis/Diana and the Moon.
Endymion's tale has resonated with people for millennia. It was taken up with vigor by Renaissance artists and the imagery of the Moon/Diana goddess visiting the eternal sleeping mortal has various executions (72 Paintings of Diana and Endymion archived in Wiki -last link-)
