A good chunk of Colorado, including the Front Range, is going to get down to -50f with windchill later this week so PLEASE stay safe. Hypothermia and frostbite can set in within MINUTES at those temperatures.
The warning for these temps goes from Wednesday night to Friday morning.
Do not go outside if you can avoid it. If you do have to, be incredibly careful. Wear layers, wear gloves, cover your face and head. DO NOT GET WET. If you do get wet go inside IMMEDIATELY.
Cover your windows with blankets for extra insulation. Have a backup heat source if you can. Let your faucets drip if you lose power, it will help your pipes not freeze. Make sure pets have warm areas as well. If you have dogs that normally go outside to go to the bathroom, consider finding a way for them to go inside like a pee pad.
If you do not have adequate heat for whatever reason, google your area + warming shelter. There will be plenty open for people to go to.
Also, many cars will struggle to start at these temperatures. Additionally, most anti-freeze/window washer fluid is only rated down to -40f, so be stupidly cautious if you have to drive. Start your car up and do a quick diagnostic before you leave. Check that everything seems to be working and if not stay where you are. Your life, and the lives of everyone else on the road, are not worth a single day at work. If you can't afford to miss a day, make a donation post and send it to me and I'll boost it.
Stay safe, y'all. A lot of the Front Range especially does not have experience with temps like these, so hang in there.
I've served my corporate overlords for 20 year so they let me pick something out of the company store. Unlike some overlords I've served in the past, they have things someone might actually want in their store. I went with the Le Creuset set... I've been wanting to get a Dutch oven for awhile:
We have a freeze warning for Halloween & All Saints' Day so we've been pulling in anything that wouldn't survive the free like these tomatoes:
And these sweet potatoes because cold can negatively affect the flavor & storability of sweet potatoes:
We also covered our brassicas in the hopes they won't suffer any damage:
I checked the weather forecast yesterday morning & the cold front wasn’t predicted to reach us. This morning I woke to 37 degrees Fahrenheit & a freeze warning. The prediction is for it to drop to 32 degrees tonight so it was time to pull in as much as we could. The Old Farmer’s Almanac doesn’t have our first Fall frost date until All Saints’ Day. I guess they could still end up being correct, technically, since these are freeze warnings.
This is how much sweet potato a single 18 inch by 18 inch planter can yield:
