A "sloppy joe" is a type of sandwich made by putting a ground beef mixture on a hamburger bun. The ground beef mixture usually includes ketchup and is usually sweet and savory, but the particulars vary by recipe. Unlike most other sandwiches, there are usually no other accoutrements. It is simply the ground beef and the bun.
The ground beef does not hold a shape and easily spills out of the bread. It can also easily stain. These two factors contribute to why it is called "sloppy." The reason for calling it "Joe" is lost, but it is generally assumed that "Joe" was the name of the chef who popularized adding tomato to loose meat sandwiches.
Sloppy Joes are considered to be low brow as they are messy, lack presentation, and are cheap. They are also commonly served as children's food as the flavors are very palatable to a child's tastes. It is very easy to make large batches of the flavored ground beef and scoop them onto buns as needed. It would be extremely unusual to see it served at a fancy restaurant.
"Sloppy" and "Uncouth" are synonyms, but "sloppy" has a low brow connotation while "uncouth" implies a level of sophistication and snobbery from the one speaking it. This is a divergence from the general Germanic/Romance distinction of perceived fanciness, as while sloppy is indeed Germanic (slip -> slop -> sloppy), "uncouth" also comes from Old English origins (cunnan -> cuth -> uncouth). The relative frequency of "uncouth" vs "sloppy" in the early twenty-first century makes the former perceived as fancier, even if it would have been considered an equally vulgar word a few hundred years ago. The Romance-origin equivalent would be "uncivilized."
"Joe" is a common name in the English speaking world. It is derived as a nickname of "Joseph," a name that originated with the eleventh son of Jacob/Israel from Abrahamic mythology. Joseph is seen as more sophisticated.
As such, an "Uncouth Joseph" could be considered syntactically identical to a "Sloppy Joe" while possessing the connotation of somehow being fancier. The above post is a joke, as an "Uncouth Joseph" does not exist. It not being served is a function of its perceived lack of class and a lack of demand, not because of its name. That said, some items do have different names based on expectations at restaurants, such as "Mac and Cheese" vs "Pasta Alfredo."

#period novel details#explaining the joke ruins the joke#not explaining the joke means people 300 years from now won't understand our culture#uncouth would have been considered uncouth in Shakespeare's time compared to uncivilized#it's about social class and expectations#French Greek and Latin all held more sway in English because of the Norman Conquest

people always talk about how doritos would kill a medieval peasant if they ate one but i think we need to recognize that the real danger is that these delicious little triangles would be so coveted that they'd become a trafficked good that people would commit violent crime over
#their poor little peasant mouths would be hooked#doritos bandits would become a thing#there would be gangs who steal them at swordpoint and ransom them off to the highest bidder#there would be infamous bandits called like doigts d'orange#because of course this if after the norman conquest of england#so the nobles would all be speaking french#and it's the nobles who would give a nickname to a bandit#though they might not have done that sort of thing back then#the infatuation with highwaymen and bandits was really a georgian thing#several hundred years later at least than any time in the middle ages#anyways#have a good night#on the frog#other bandit names may include:#le voleur rouge#blaunche powdyr james#(blaunche powdyr was apparently a spice blend)#flumbarding tulles#(flumbarding is a medieval word that means a man with a hot temper)

The French Indochinese Union. Source: Age of Revolution website
In 1887, France created the Indochinese Union out of the colony of Cochin China, the protectorates of Annam and Tonkin together with the Kingdom of Cambodia, also a French protectorate. The Kingdom of Laos was added to the Union in 1893 following a short war with Siam, who ceded its former province to France as part of the peace settlement. This marked the creation of French Indochina, the colonial entity designed to facilitate French East Asian trade and the exploitation of the territories’ natural resources.

“Mexico excludes the King of Spain from the celebrations of the naming of the Mexican president because he has not yet apologised for the (Spanish) conquest”.

#The only dude that should respond to this in any case is like… Very dead (Christopher Columbus)#Seriously#Next time: “Spanish do not let French minister enter in the country because he has not apologised for Napoleon breaking havoc in the 1800s”#The conquest was indeed a wretched thing but c’mon

1) The reason why Christianity and languages like English, Spanish, and French are so spread out in the world (primarily in the West but not entirely) is because of colonialism and violence. People rarely mass convert and give up all their own languages, beliefs, and traditions by choice.
2) If you can understand the above statement, then you also need to learn to apply that to other religions and languages that have spread massively in parts of the world and give space to people who need to talk about the kinds of colonialist violence in their cultures and communities that you aren't personally familiar with, like the Islamic conquests throughout Asia, Africa, and parts of Europe.
3) This also applies to massive countries. We can understand how Canada and the US grew so large through colonialist expansion and by displacing, absorbing, and killing the original inhabitants of the lands, but we also need to apply that to countries like Russia and China that have also become so large through expansionism and violence.
4) These things do not make any religion/language/nationiality/etc inherently bad or violent, because anything and everything can be used to justify atrocities, but we need to recognize and acknowledge these realities to avoid repeating and contributing to them. We also need to boost the voices of the religious and ethnic minorities under these colonial and imperialist powers, especially as those powers work harder to silence those monorities and repaint their violent histories as just peaceful and respectful expansion.

Hilarious Histories - September 27
Perhaps “The Tonight Show” had a larger impact on the world than William the Conqueror...
By Alexandra Paskhaver On September 27, 1066, the Duke of Normandy set sail to begin the Norman Conquest in an attempt to seize the English throne. Eight hundred eighty-eight years later to the day, “The Tonight Show” premiered, hosted by Steve Allen. Coincidence? I think not. The duke, known as William the Conqueror to his chums, had a big impact on people. Mainly on their heads, with a club.…
