Mountain West Showdown: Fresno State vs. San Diego State - Who Takes the Crown?
Tumblr media
Watch Online
The Mountain West conference heats up as Fresno State Bulldogs clash with the San Diego State Aztecs in a battle for conference bragging rights and crucial early-season momentum.
Both teams enter with hungry ambitions, but only one can leave Viejas Arena victorious.
This clash promises high-stakes drama, defensive intensity, and a fight for every inch of the hardwood.
Tumblr media
Fresno State Bulldogs: Gritty Underdogs Seeking Upset
The Bulldogs, under Head Coach Justin Hutson, embody the gritty underdog spirit. While boasting a 5-7 record, their losses often came against formidable opponents, showcasing their competitive edge.
Leading the charge is Isaiah Hill, a dynamic scorer averaging 18.9 points per game, whose offensive prowess can spark runs and keep them in the thick of things.
Their defense, averaging 66.3 points allowed per game, promises a physical battle and potential frustration for the Aztecs' potent offense.
San Diego State Aztecs: Defending Champs Facing Early Test
The Aztecs, under the reign of legendary Coach Brian Dutcher, are reigning Mountain West champions and harbor national championship aspirations.
They boast a 10-3 record, powered by a balanced attack led by Matt Bradley (12.1 ppg) and Darrion Trammell (11.9 ppg).
Their signature suffocating defense, allowing a conference-low 59.5 points per game, will test Fresno State's offensive execution and patience.
However, a recent one-point loss to Boise State raises questions about their vulnerability in close games.
Tumblr media
Keys to the Game:
Can Fresno State exploit the Aztecs' recent defensive lapse? Hill's hot shooting hand and disciplined ball movement could challenge San Diego State's defensive intensity.
Will San Diego State's offense overpower Fresno State's gritty defense? Their balanced attack and offensive rebounding prowess could wear down the Bulldogs' defensive intensity.
Home-court advantage plays a role: Viejas Arena can become a electric cauldron, potentially providing an additional edge for the Aztecs.
Prediction:
This promises to be a tight and defensive battle, with both teams fighting for every possession.
While San Diego State's talent and experience give them a slight edge, Fresno State's underdog grit and potential offensive explosion could upset the balance.
Expect a nail-biter down to the wire, with the potential for a shocking result.
Tumblr media
Beyond the Scoreboard:
This game isn't just about points and victories; it's about setting the tone for the Mountain West season.
A win for Fresno State could launch them into conference contention, while a victory for San Diego State reaffirms their dominance and championship aspirations.
Regardless of the outcome, this clash promises to be a showcase of Mountain West basketball's intensity and defensive prowess, leaving fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

2021 Top Games of the Week: Week 9
Tumblr media
Ok folks we’ve got a few big ones coming up. The Big Ten heads up a great slate of important games in Week 9.
The Top Ten Games of the Week
10. North Carolina 4-3 (3-3) at #11 Notre Dame 6-1
If I had more faith in North Carolina I’d put this game higher. I think Notre Dame is gonna slip up again at some point but the Tar Heels probably won’t be the team to do it.
9. Virginia 6-2 (4-2) at #25 BYU 6-2
Oh isn’t this spicy? Bronco Mendenhall returns to the place where he established himself as a head coach. The longtime Cougar saw success in Provo, leading BYU to several Mountain West championships in the heyday of that league, and to several ranked finishes. For a while it seemed like he got the better of the amicable divorce, with low expectations leading to a slow but steady rebuild in Virginia, meanwhile the Cougars were seemingly spinning their wheels for the most part. However, last year all the pieces clicked together and Kalani Sitake’s Brigham Young squad finished #11 in the final polls, one better than Bronco’s career high. I’m interested.
8. Fresno State 6-2 (3-1) at #21 San Diego State 7-0 (3-0)
Though Fresno State and San Diego State have only been reunited for the past decade, when the Bulldogs joined the Mountain West in 2012, the Bulldogs and Aztecs have become the dominant forces in the West Division. The rekindled rivalry is now one of the most important games in the conference. San Diego State has put together another strong season. The Aztecs possess a lockdown defense and one of the best punters in the country, college or professional, in Matt Araiza. Fresno State nearly claimed the PAC-12 for themselves when the Bulldogs came within a hair’s breadth of beating #11 Oregon and then unseating #13 UCLA two weeks later. Don’t let a loss to Hawaii deceive you, this is a dangerous 2 loss Mountain West squad.
7. #19 SMU 7-0 (3-0) at Houston 6-1 (4-0)
This one is also juicy. SMU and Houston are more or less playing for the privilege to face off against Cincinnati in the AAC Championship. The Mustangs are undefeated and looking tough, meanwhile Houston has only suffered an early loss to Texas Tech before locking down in league play. The game is colored a bit because The Cougars are moving to the Big 12 in a few years, leaving SMU to an uncertain fate.
6. Texas 4-3 (2-2) at #16 Baylor 6-1 (3-1)
Speaking of leaving, Texas has left the Big 12 for a bigger piece of pie. Baylor doesn’t have to let this divorce happen without punching their age old antagonist in the eye before they go.
5. #1 Georgia 7-0 (5-0) vs Florida 4-3 (2-3)
I would have thought this would be a #1 game but Florida really hasn’t been playing like one of the best teams in the country. Georgia certainly has, and I think the Bulldogs are going to have a huge advantage in the Cocktail Party. The Gators often rise up for big games, so I won’t count them out yet, but they’re certainly not on a championship trajectory at present.
4. #10 Ole Miss 6-1 (3-1) at #18 Auburn 5-2 (2-1)
Until further notice Alabama is still running this division. That means everybody else is still just fighting for 2nd place and if they’re lucky a tiebreaking win. It’s not a bad life, you’ll make a NY6 bowl as a consolation prize. That’s more or less what’s at stake here as our intrepid Tigers and Rebels attempt to chase down the Tide.
3. #9 Iowa 6-1 (3-1) at Wisconsin 4-3 (2-2)
The longstanding Iowa-Wisconsin rivalry frequently decides the Big Ten West division. This year, the Hawkeyes have a lead in the race but victory hasn’t been assured following the Hawkeyes’ upset loss to Purdue, the offense is still a clear weakness. The Badgers have ran hot and cold, but they seem to have righted themselves after handily beating that same Boilermaker squad. Camp Randall will be rocking as Wisconsin attempts to unseat their rivals atop the division.
2. #20 Penn State 5-2 (2-2) at #5 Ohio State 6-1 (4-0)
Penn State shouldn’t have bungled that 9 OT game if they wanted that #1 spot on this list. It’s a great rivalry but the Nittany Lions can now only serve as an obstacle for Ohio State as they’ve taken themselves out of the East race following another no offense showing last week.
1. #6 Michigan 7-0 (0-0) at #8 Michigan State 7-0 (0-0)
I can’t believe to say this but we might see some points in the Michigan-Michigan State game. The Wolverines and Spartans have been off to hot starts, and now stand in each other’s way as they jockey for a Playoff spot. It feels like a long time coming for both teams, and both will be playing will extra intensity both for the rivalry and for the high stakes.
-
5 G5 Games of the Week
5. Wyoming 4-3 (0-3) at San Jose State 4-4 (2-2)
The Mountain West undercard. Wyoming and San Jose State both feel like they’ve wasted some potential this year and are out to prove themselves.
4. Louisiana-Monroe 4-3 (2-2) at Appalachian State 5-2 (2-1)
God bless them, longtime doormat Louisiana-Monroe is attempting bowl eligibility. I hope they make it, but App is a tough cross-division draw.
3. Hawaii 4-4 (1-2) at Utah State 5-2 (3-1)
Utah State has inserted themselves into the Mountain Division race. The Aggies hold a lead despite a head to head loss to Boise State. USU is gonna have to keep playing stout football to keep up their title pretensions.
2. UTEP 6-1 (3-0) at FAU 4-3 (2-1)
UTEP has been one of the feel good stories of 2021. The long suffering Miners are bowl eligible only 7 games into the season and are gunning for the West Division title. Florida Atlantic are in the lead in the East Division and can score a big win on Saturday if they can fend off UTEP.
1. Troy 4-3 (2-1) at #24 Coastal Carolina 6-1 (1-1)
Sorry Coastal, it’s a shame the margin is so slim. However, stranger things have happened, winning out never hurt anybody. Who knows, maybe the AAC and MWC champ both have 2 losses.
-
FCS Games of the Week
1. #3 Southern Illinois 6-1 (4-0) at #16 Northern Iowa 4-3 (2-2)
It’s not a great FCS week but this game definitely stands out. Southern Illinois is attempting to establish themselves as a real FCS powerhouse. Can the Salukis navigate through the notoriously difficult MVFC?

Picking Every Bowl: New Mexico Bowl, UTEP vs. Fresno State
PUBG Mobile New Mexico Bowl UTEP (7-5) vs. Fresno State (9-3), University Stadium, Albuquerque, N.M., 2:15 p.m., ESPN Fresno State -11.5 – O/U 51 On the surface, this game seems to be an enormous mismatch. Fresno State ended the season on a roll, including wins over San Diego State and a blowout in the season-ender against surging San Jose State. On the other side is UTEP, a team that started…

College football polls: Updated AP Top 25, Coaches Poll rankings after Week 10
Tumblr media
A singular storyline is becoming more and more evident as the 2021 college football season progresses.
Georgia is the No. 1 team in the country. Everyone else? They’re subject to unforeseen upsets, small-time performances on the big stage and college football chaos in general.
MORE: College Football Playoff Picture for Week 11: Shuffle for last two spots is on
The Bulldogs took care of business on Saturday with a 43-6 hammering of Missouri in Sanford Stadium. None of the other College Football Playoff-eligible teams played particularly well on Saturday, including the team many consider to be the biggest threat to Georgia. No. 2 Alabama came out of a bye to play a horrendous game vs. LSU, squeaking out a 20-14 victory against a vastly depleted Tigers team with a lame-duck coach in Ed Orgeron. The Tide needed several consecutive defensive stops in the final quarter of play to keep LSU from sending Orgeron out with another victory against Nick Saban.
The Tide, at least, won their game. The same couldn’t be said of No. 3 Michigan State, which fell to Purdue’s patented “Spoilermaker” magic in a 40-29 upset in West Lafayette. Purdue now has two top-five victories on the season after beating then-No. 2 Iowa earlier in the season. Elsewhere, No. 9 Wake Forest suffered its first loss of the season in a 58-55 shootout against North Carolina, a game in which Sam Howell threw for 216 yards, rushed for 104 more and scored three total touchdowns.
No. 3 Oregon was arguably the best performer among the top 10 teams outside of Georgia on Saturday, overcoming an early haymaker from 4-5 Washington — and terrible Seattle weather — en route to a 26-16 victory. No. 5 Ohio State wasn’t particularly impressive in its win over unranked Nebraska, but managed a 26-17 victory over the Cornhuskers in Lincoln. And No. 6 Cincinnati, which needs to overcome its Group of 5 Status if it hopes to make the Playoff, did itself no favors in a razor-thin victory over Tulsa.
All those games and more had an effect on the latest AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll rankings. Sporting News takes a look at those polls after the Week 10 slate of games:

The Big Picture
I hope you weren’t expecting something different to happen. 2020 Alabama might be the best college football team we’ve seen in the history of the sport so yeah they were always gonna win this.
Yeah it is depressing that basically everything played out in a similar fashion, right down to the same four Playoff teams. I mean, we’re at a point in the sport much like the 70′s where the same few teams are always at the peak. It’s a bummer but that’s college football for you.
-
The Bowl Records
Big 12: 8-0 MAC: 6-2 PAC-12: 8-3 Big Ten: 4-4 American: 3-3 Independent: 2-2 SEC: 5-7 MWC: 3-4 Sun Belt: 2-4 ACC: 2-8 C-USA: 0-6
The Big 12 shocked everybody with a perfect bowl season. The MAC and PAC-12 had surprisingly strong postseasons as well, though in the PAC’s case this came with losing their two highest profile bowls. The SEC underperformed outside of the very strongest teams in the league, of course Alabama notched two wins to help prop up the conference’s record. Poor C-USA laid an egg, going 0-for the postseason.
The Final Ranking
AP Poll
1. Alabama 15-0 (8-0) 2. Ohio State 13-2 (9-0) 3. Clemson 12-2 (8-0) 4. Texas A&M 12-1 (7-1) 5. Oklahoma 12-2 (7-2) 6. Notre Dame 11-2 7. Iowa State 11-3 (8-1) 8. Florida 11-3 (7-1) 9. Georgia 11-2 (6-2) 10. Cincinnati 13-1 (8-0) 11. Oregon 11-3 (7-2) 12. Auburn 10-3 (5-3) 13. Indiana 11-2 (8-1) 14. Texas 10-3 (6-3) 15. Liberty 12-1 16. Coastal Carolina 13-1 (8-0) 17. Oklahoma State 10-3 (6-3) 18. Iowa 10-3 (6-3) 19. Stanford 10-3 (7-2) 20. UCF 10-3 (5-3) 21. Arizona State 10-3 (6-3) 22. BYU 10-3 23. Northwestern 10-4 (6-3) 24. USC 9-5 (7-2) 25. Wisconsin 9-4 (6-3)
And there we have it, the final rankings for the 2020 season.

I hope you all had fun reading this little flight of fancy. I’ll be back soon with some real life football content. Stay tuned, the season is almost upon us!

College Football 2020 Season Week 12 TV Watch Em Ups: this is really still way too much football
Tumblr media
Would you believe that I am not good at conveying accurate information? I know, it came as a shock to me, too! But it turns out this is week 12 of the college football season. Somebody else can leaf back through these posts but I’m not sure from this distance that I even made it as far as week 1 with the number listed correctly. But I’ve gotta trust what’s in front of me.
It doesn’t matter anyway. The long game for me has always been waiting for the season to be called off entirely and it’s becoming more and more clear that some version of this grotesquerie is going to make its way to the very bloody end of the playoffs. So even in my safest gambling prognostications I am utterly useless and wrong. (Maybe two consecutive days without my pills was a bad idea...) Here’s where things stand at postin’ time:
Saturday, November 21
Matchup                                             Time (ET)                       TV/Mobile
Georgia Southern at Army                12:00pm                        CBSSN
What a miserable way to open a post. Let’s skip this one.
Illinois at Nebraska                            12:00pm                           FS1
Still loling at Penn State. A great capper to Nebraska hanging on to beat Penn State last week would be to turn around and earn Lovie Smith another chance to win four more games in 2021.
LSU at Arkansas                                12:00pm                         SECN
This appears to be a mistake as LSU suspended their football program for the 2020 season.
6 Florida at Vanderbilt                       12:00pm                          ESPN
Florida hasn’t had a complete fuck up yet in 2020. Something seems really off about that.
9 Indiana at 3 Ohio State                   12:00pm                          FOX
Indiana has been the feel good story of 2020 college football so far. Maybe the only feel good story. They’re going to lose this game but show enough pluck and fight and courage to stick pretty close to the top 10 before taking a soul shattering dive at home against Maryland next week. Or they’ll just lose to tOSU by 60.
4 Clemson at Florida State                12:00pm                          ABC
Bobby Bowden built Florida State into a powerhouse by taking road matchups against anybody dumb enough to take that win for granted. There is a whole “sod graveyard” at FSU commemorating the biggest of those wins. So there’s a decent chance the +35.5 line for this game (or +36.5 depending on where you bet) is the most anybody has ever been favored as a road team in Tallahassee. I’ve mentioned before in these posts that FSU is maybe at the lowest point of any of Florida’s big three programs in my lifetime. There is actually no maybe. This program is a total shambles right now.
East Carolina at Temple                     12:00pm                            ESPN+
Eh, sure. Fine.
Arkansas State at Texas State           12:00pm                           ESPNU
Not sure if any of you caught the whole Farhad Manjoo controversy on twitter yesterday but basically he wrote an article for the New York Times about how many people he’s been exposed to in terms of COVID risk lately and how dangerous it could be for him to now fly home to his parents house for Thanksgiving. After going through all of the math and demonstrating pretty well what a horrible idea it would be for him to celebrate Thanksgiving with his parents he concludes by saying that he’s going to go ahead and celebrate Thanksgiving with his parents anyway. This game here, Arkansas State at Texas State, is about the same level of completely worthless risk of death and it’s still going to be played. I might start referencing that dumb Farhad Manjoo article/idea more regularly in watch em up posts.
Appalachian State at 15 Coastal Carolina         12:00pm           ESPN2
Coastal Carolina is going to win a national championship against BYU because every other program is too close to an 100% infection rate to keep playing. BYU doesn’t believe in shit like COVID and Coastal Carolina used up all of their budget fielding a team in the first place.
Stephen F. Austin at Memphis             12:00pm                          ESPN+
There it is, the 100th game to kick off at noon this Saturday! Congratulations, everybody!
Rice at North Texas                               2:00pm                            ESPN3
Rice has had a football program for a really long time for some reason.
FIU at WKU                                            2:00pm                             ESPN3
...
North Alabama at 8 BYU                      3:00pm                        BYUtv/ESPN3
One of sports great rivalry games.
UTSA at Southern Miss                        3:00pm                            ESPN+
Mmm, another classic.
Western Carolina at Eastern Kentucky        3:00pm                   ESPN3
Thank god this one isn’t cancelled.
UCLA at 11 Oregon                               3:30pm                            ESPN2
Chip Kelly is still at UCLA, right? It would be kind of funny if he beat Oregon but also might go more or less unnoticed. Oregon has to be the least hyped team in the country to feature maybe four 2021 first round picks and a clear path to a conference title. The Pac-12 came so close to actually doing the right thing and not playing this year.
Iowa at Penn State                                3:30pm                              BTN
When I said that Indiana is the feel good story of the season so far I forgot that Penn State hasn’t won yet. Rockeye Chalkeye Hawkeyes or whatever Iowa’s chant is. Let’s keep it fucking going.
California at Oregon State                    3:30pm                              FS1
Not a single feeling.
10 Wisconsin at 19 Northwestern         3:30pm                             ABC
For my money this is close to as unappealing as a top 20 matchup is liable to ever be. That’s only partially explained by the sham quality of this season overall.
San Diego State at Nevada                    3:30pm                             CBS
This is good stuff normally but I might just skip this entire day of watching.
Middle Tennessee at Troy                       3:30pm                           ESPN3
{URGE TO DO LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE INTENSIFYING}
Georgia State at South Alabama            3:30pm                           ESPNU
I am boiling over with apathy at the thought of this one.
7 Cincinnati at UCF                                  3:30pm                            ESPN
The people’s champs are not particularly great this year but maybe they can do us all a solid and derail the train that is Ohio State, Jr. The line isn’t crazily tilted towards the Bearcats (-5)  so maybe it’s a real possibility?
Virginia Tech at Pitt                                  4:00pm                            ACCN
Don’t let anybody convince you that the players aren’t wearing masks on the field during game action here. You’ve just gotta believe.
Kansas State at 17 Iowa State                4:00pm                            FOX
I should be interested in this one and yet...
Kentucky at 1 Alabama                            4:00pm                            SECN
For the record I agree that Mac Jones is really good and I also put him at about the 15th best player on the Tide this year. So, no, he wouldn’t be in the lead for RTARLsman 2020 if that were happening.
Abilene Christian at Virginia                     4:00pm                       RSN/ESPN3
UVA is completely inscrutable this year. Even more than usual. But they have been an absolute pleasure to watch in short bursts because their uniform game has been exceptionally sharp.
Tennessee at 23 Auburn                            7:00pm                           ESPN
Tumblr media
Missouri at South Carolina                            7:30pm                   SECN Alt.
The SEC is putting their messiest foot forward in primetime this week.
Michigan at Rutgers                                        7:30pm                     BTN
Great conference matchup between two programs that peaked in the 19th century and will never be national champions again.
21 Liberty at NC State                                     7:30pm              RSN/ESPN3
This Liberty being ranked thing is hilarious but I’ll be pretty happy if NC State wrecks them.
14 Oklahoma State at 18 Oklahoma              7:30pm                     ABC
Bedlam, baby! In primetime! Why!
Mississippi State at 13 Georgia                     7:30pm                     SECN
I don’t root for the UGAs often but I’ll be deeply in their corner this week. I want Mike Leach out of a job by the end of next season.
Arizona at Washington                                    8:00pm                      FOX
Pretty sweet uniform matchup, if nothing else. It is nothing else.
20 USC at Utah                                                10:30pm                    ESPN
I should really want to watch this game but I really don’t.
Boise State at Hawaii                                      11:00pm                  CBSSN
Maybe Boise will be tired from travel but they have no business winning by less than 20. Hawaii is not running that GoGo shit and they deserve to burn for it.
