সিলেটি ভাষাকে বাংলা ভাষার আঞ্চলিক রূপ হিসেবে ধারনা করা হলেও আসলে এটি একটি স্বতন্ত্র ভাষা।

বাংলাভাষার মূলরীতির সাথে যথেষ্ঠ পার্থক্য থাকা সিলেটি ভাষা বাংলা ভাষা থেকে আলাদা এবং প্রাচীন স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ ভাষা।

সিলেটি ভাষার নিজস্ব ব্যাকরণ রয়েছে যাকে সিলেট নাগরী বা প্রাচীন নাগরী বলা হয়।

সিলেটি ভাষায় ৩২টি বর্ণ বা অক্ষর রয়েছে যার মধ্যে স্বরবর্ণ ৫টি (অ, ই, ঈ, উ, ঊ) এবং বাকি ২৭টি ব্যঞ্জন বর্ণ।

গবেষকদের মতে, "সিলেটিরা মূলত বাংলাভাষী নন। সিলেটি জনগোষ্ঠী নিজস্ব ভাষার অধিকারী। বাংলাদেশের মাতৃভাষা বাংলা হলেও সিলেটিদের মাতৃভাষা সিলেটি (ছিলটি) নাগরী বা প্রাচীন নাগরী।

সিলেটি নাগরী একটি বিজ্ঞান সম্মত লিপি এবং যাঁরা তা উদ্ভাবন করেছেন এ লিপি তাদের বিরল প্রতিভার সাক্ষ্য বহন করে"

সিলেটি ভাষার উদ্ভব নিয়ে ভাষা গবেষকদের রয়েছে ভিন্নভিন্ন মত। ভাষা গবেষক সৈয়দ মোস্তফা কামাল ও অধ্যাপক মুহম্মদ আসাদ্দর আলীর মতে, জটিল সংস্কৃত প্রধান বাংলা বর্ণমালার বিকল্প লিপি হিসেবে সিলেটি নাগরী লিপির উদ্ভাবন হয়েছিল।

ড. সুনীতিকুমার চট্টোপাধ্যয় মনে করেন ইসলাম প্রচারের উদ্দেশ্যে আসা হজরত শাহজালাল (রঃ) সঙ্গে করে এই ভাষার লিপি নিয়ে আসেন।

কারো কারো মতে আফগান শাসনের সময় এই ভাষার প্রচলন শুরু হয়। তবে অধিকাংশের মতে এই ভাষাটি খ্রিষ্টীয় চতুর্দশ শতাব্দীর মাঝামাঝি সময়ে মুসলমানদের হাত ধরে এসেছে। ফ্রান্সের বিখ্যাত ভাষা যাদুঘরে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন ভাষার উদূতি রয়েছে।

সেখানে বাংলাদেশের ভাষার বিবরণে উল্লেখ করা আছে যে, "বাংলাদেশে দুটি ভাষা প্রচলিত। এর একটি বাংলা এবং অন্যটি সিলেটি" ।

সিলেটি ভাষা নিয়ে দেশ-বিদেশে চলছে গবেষনা। অনেকেই এই বিষয়ে পিএইচডিও করেছেন। এখন লেখায় সিলেটি ভাষার ব্যবহার না হলেও সৌভাগ্য যে সিলেটের নাগরী লিপির দ্বারা লিখিত প্রায় ১৬০ টি বই সংরক্ষণ করা হয়েছে।

সিলেটি নাগরি ভাষায় লিখিত বই 'হালত-উন-নবী'

কিন্তু প্রাচীন এই ভাষাটি প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক রূপ পায়নি এখনো। স্বাধীনতা পরবর্তী সময় সিলেটি-সিলেটি প্রবাসীরা এই ভাষার স্বীকৃতি চেয়ে আন্দোলন করলেও ১৯৮০ সালের দিকে তা স্থিমিত হয় যায়।

সিলেটি ভাষা শুধু সিলেটেরই মাতৃভাষা নয় ভারতের ত্রিপুরা, আসাম ও মেঘালয়ের লোকের মাতৃভাষাও সিলেটি। এটি একটি প্রাচীন ভাষা তাঁতে কোন সন্দেহ নেই।

সিলেটের বাইরে বাংলাদেশের ময়মনসিংহ, নেত্রকোণা, কিশোরগঞ্জ এবং ভারতের কাছাড়, করিমগঞ্জ এলাকায় সিলেটি নাগরী লিপির প্রচলন ছিল।

একটি জরিপে দেখা গেছে পৃথিবীর ১ কোটি ৬০ লক্ষ মানুষের মাতৃভাষা সিলেটি। অর্থ্যাৎ বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের বাইরে পৃথিবীর আরো ৭ লক্ষ মানুষ সিলেটি মাতৃভাষায় কথা বলেন।

সিলেটি ভাষা আঞ্চলিক ভাষা হিসেবে বিবেচিত হলেও পৃথিবীর বুকে রয়েছে এর আলাদা গ্রহণযোগ্যতা।

আসুন, ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারী আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসে আমরা সকলে মিলে সিলেটি ভাষার রাষ্ট্রীয় স্বীকৃতি অর্জনের জন্য ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে কাজ করি।
