Trying to delineate what was in GRRM's text for Elden Ring and what FromSoftware added/removed, I think an important thing is this: GRRM finds grief frustrating. There's a lot of it in his work, but there's nothing appealing about it, and definitely nothing romantic. It's painful and usually-undignified, like being hospitalized. Prolonging it is self-harm, and not always only self-harm.

Whereas FromSoftware games are funerals set in graveyards the size of the world. Very different aesthetic priorities.
