GANADARA

Today, Korean music is a very big thing within the music industry. As many kpop groups grow more and more, other artists who are part of Korean rap, r&b, and rock are getting recognized as well. One man who is getting more and more popular around the globe is Jay Park. Although having a little controversial past, he grew up to become not only a great artist but also the founder and president of two K-hip-hop companies, AOMG and Highr Music, and even made a soju company, a popular Korean alcoholic drink. Out of the many songs released by Jay Park, I chose to do a little deep dive into one of his recent songs called GANADARA featuring another big artist, IU. When listening to this song multiple times, I found it to be pretty simple, as most of the instruments were pretty noticeable, the lyrical aspect was very interesting, and the overall song is just really good. I’m just warning you that my music skills are not good so I could be mistaken about some of the things I say. 

To begin with, I wanted to look over the instrumental and singing of this song. The song is in a D major key at 90 bpm. The song starts off with an electric guitar that plays a repetition of a few chords throughout the whole song. I did some research and I found the chords on the Music sheet. I think this song is unique in its tone of relaxation and soothingness. It gives me this type of vibe to ease into the song without rushing into it. In my perspective, the instruments played a big part in the song's overall vibe. The use of the electric guitar, drums, and snapping/clapping gives this loose feeling to it that makes me want to listen more. Not only do the instruments play a big part but the voices in the song. Jay park has many styles in his songs. This song brought out his more melodic way of music rather than hard rap. Although there was rapping in this song, jay park was able to keep that calmness in his tone that matches the song perfectly. He also picked a great feature for the song. IU, who is usually a ballad singer, was able to provide a great match with Jay park as their voices match really well. She has a huskiness to her voice that adds to the soothing sound of the song. 

Another aspect of the song that made it unique was its lyrical side. Yes, I know it's in Korean… so I found an English translation of it on Genius. I also found an article that perfectly describes the song and how the lyrics make it stand out. To begin with, GANADARA is letters from the  Korean alphabet. It's a basic thing that children use to help them understand the letters. However, Jay park uses it in his own way that conveys a little story behind the song. He sings about two lovers who have a language barrier, making it difficult to communicate. But through the basic parts of the Korean, they would be able to express their love for each other. 

GANDARA is a good song, but the instrumental, the voices, and the lyrical aspects of the song are what make it more unique than what it already is. If you want to give it a listen, here's the link. Thanks for reading:)

yuyu (my no.1 obvi) @leehanascent or @247yuyu - GANADARA (jay park, IU) hear me out.. this song is so laid back and IU's vocal color on this just reminds me of yuyu. ik how introverted she can be, but she tries her best and she's def one of the first people who sent me asks after reading posts about my mental health so she holds a reALLY special place in my heart, just like this song. (mind u i found this song at shuffle, just like how a single post of my bnd album started our friendship!)

lili (my newest yet sweetest moot of all time) @hyunhanie - MAYDAY (crush, joy) this song is my comfort song bc i kept coming back at it whenever i felt down or unmotivated (such as today) and lili is just like someone you can talk your heart out, bc she WILL comfort you and make you feel better. she also resonates with wanting to meet your moots irl which makes me feel like we're besties doors away from each other :)

Music Monday #224: Jay Park feat IU - GANADARA release: March 2022 genre: Kpop

I know, I know. Last week was a rolling disaster the whole week, but I'm back now? And still so very, very behind with releases, oops. I've got to revise my schedule a bit, don't know that I'll actually pick up Music May again, seeing as the month is almost over.

I don't really have the energy (or the time left in the day) to do a full deep dive on Jay Park - there's a lot of ground to cover, considering he debuted as leader of 2PM all the way back in 2008, then had to leave the group in 2010 over antis ginning up controversy - but this is such a cute love song that I've been putting off for entirely too long, so here we go. Given his (mostly deserved) reputation for being A Bad Boy, "GANADARA" is an adorably wholesome duet speaking to a difficulty that a language barrier can present. Indeed, the title is a reference to learning hangul - for his tiny desk home concert for NPR, the lyric (ga na da ra ma ba sa) is "translated" as A B C D E F G.

As if the song wasn't already cute enough, the video is even cuter. IU's schedule was jam packed last spring, and while the events of the video aren't what really happened, they're entirely plausible given how much she was doing herself - even a video with only one set and one costume change will still take hours to shoot as directors get additional angles and tweak blocking or have to reshoot because of a boom mic or wardrobe malfunction or any of the other reasons that could come up. I can't remember now if he said why he wasn't doing music shows at the time - the only one I can find now is from an episode of You Heeyul's Sketchbook, which he did with dance crews MVP and HolyBang and even that was two months later. Scheduling conflicts, I imagine.

"GANADARA" is out now wherever you like to stream Kpop. As a content note, should you want to listen to more of Jay Park's music, a lot of his most popular songs don't shy away from being explicitly sexual. The same content warning is on his Tiny Desk concert, in which he shifts some of his hiphop hits to a more jazzy style.

My 2022 MAMA Voting

Life has been so busy that I haven’t really kept up with kpop, so much so that I completely lost track of time and MAMA 2022 came and went without my knowledge, much less participation! But in line with my goals of last year, I decided to belatedly release my opinions on the MAMA nominations for this year. As before, the first one is my vote based on the nominations presented, and then I talk about my favorite group/song for that category in general.

Best Male Group: BTS (though they really didn’t release much, I did like their new songs); I wish OnlyOneOf was nominated (their undergrOund idOl series alone is a work of art)

Best Female Group: (G)I-DLE (just based on B-sides; I haven’t liked their title tracks in a while); I wish Dreamcatcher was nominated (I say this every year, but I can dream!)

Best Male Artist: Kang Daniel (his stuff was pretty groovy this year imo); I wish DPR IAN or WOODZ was nominated (both were killing it!)

Best Female Artist: Taeyeon (one word: queen); I wish HEIZE was nominated

Best Dance Performance - Male Group: Stray Kids - “Maniac” (SKZ delivers their choreo very well); I wish ATEEZ - “Cyberpunk” was nominated (and that there was also an official choreo video instead of just concert fancams)

Best Dance Performance - Female Group: IVE - “Love Dive” (very iconic); I wish Dreamcatcher - “Vision” was nominated
