GMC Mahalo Concept, 1990. A convertible prototype that previewed the 1991 Sonoma compact pick-up (which wasn't a convertible). The lowered body had ground effects aerodynamics, a rear spoiler and bed cover.
What if... With the return of the American compact from Chevrolet the S-10, it would prompt GMC to also release a higher trimmed Sonoma for their lineup. Having the same mechanicals as the S-10, the Sonoma would offer a larger bed along with leatherette interiors versus the standard cloth in the S-10. The interior would also offer heated and cooled seating, and be offered in an extended and crew cabin. It wouldn't be as roomy as the Canyon interior as it is smaller in dimensions, but it would offer the same amenities.
National Sneakers Day celebrates sneakers, which are shoes that are designed for use in sports or for other types of physical exercise, but are often also used as an informal shoe for everyday use. Other terms such as tennis shoes, kicks, or gym shoes are also used for them, and the term sneakers is most often used to describe this type of shoe in the Northeastern United States and Southern Florida. The name has been used at least since 1887, when the Boston Globe used it and said it was “the name boys give to tennis shoes.” In 1917 Henry Nelson McKinney, an advertising agent, used the term “sneaker” because the rubber sole made the shoe stealthy and quiet, and much easier to sneak up on someone without them noticing. Leather soled dress shoes were the norm of the era, and were much louder. The first rubber soled shoes were introduced in the United States in 1892, and sneakers gained in popularity after World War I. It was also during this time that sports players began to endorse sneakers, also increasing the popularity of the shoes; for example, Chuck Taylor endorsed Converse All Stars. Sneakers began being used more for everyday use in the 1950’s, increasing their popularity some more. Jogging shoes became a popular type of sneaker in the 1970’s, and each type of sport had shoes made specifically for it. Wearing a certain type of sneaker is now often seen as a fashion statement, and certain sneakers have long been associated with rock ‘n roll—such as Converse—and with hip hop—such as Puma, Nike, and Adidas. Collectors of sneakers are known as sneakerheads.
National Sneakers Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on October 9th.
Bleh I hate to do this. Hi I'm Amir, I'm a trans disabled autistic Arab and I need help. Me and my partners car broke down on July 12th leading to being unable to mske it to many if any shifts for our summer job. It needs a whole new engine which would be 3,000+ dollars. I don't have the money and I'd never expect that much from others. But we have another more feesable option. My grandfather has a 2001 GMC Sonoma that is fully paid off and in great condition for it's age that he is willing to give us for free. The only condition is that we would have to fly to michigan from florida. Normally that's a fairly easy ask money wise but unfortunately we need the car before our main job starts on August 8th. Plane tickets cost up to $500 for us to get there in such short notice. I am looking to raise money to try and cover as much of the flight as humanly possible as money is already tight. Anything extra we get will go to bills as we are a bit behind on what we need to pay those as we've been out of work.
Another aspect that arose during the 1990s was the rise of performance pickup trucks. GM started things off with the 454 SS, and then many models followed suit. The GMC Syclone was at the top of this list. The slick styling of the Syclone was a vast departure from the run-of-the-mill GMC Sonoma model on the market. The performance was also a lot better with the Syclone being the fastest vehicle on the road for a few years (via Edmunds).
GMC Syclone
Nowadays, these trucks are synonymous with quality and design, and you’ll seldom find one for a cheap price. GM didn’t cut any corners when it came to this beautiful truck and that made their enthusiasts satisfied. Nowadays, the Syclone is still one of the most popular used GM trucks on the road.
Can you tell me a fun fact about 2002 GMC Sonoma? I named my cat after this old truck at my old job and Im wondering if theres cool lore
sure, in fact i love the sonoma so much i’ll give you two!
the gmc sonoma was built on the same platform as the chevrolet s10, and both had suv versions in the gmc jimmy and chevy blazer. these models go back to the early 1980s and were some of the first domestically-built small trucks in the US. they succeeded the chevrolet LUV, one of the first two minitrucks sold in the united states, which was essentially a reskinned isuzu. smaller japanese cars were becoming popular in the 1970s because of their superior fuel economy and more convenient driving experience, so american car manufacturers rushed to meet the demand by collaborating with companies like mazda and isuzu and mitsubishi. the first generations of the american-made s10 and sonoma dropped in 1982, beating ford to the punch by a year and officially becoming the first domestic minitrucks in america
the first gen gmc sonoma was also the base for the first compact “muscle truck” - a minitruck with the guts and therefore performance of a muscle car - the gmc syclone! it was one of the fastest production cars in the world upon its release, famously beating a ferrari 348 in multiple drag races
i can’t get my full license until september but I’m still looking out for something. ik it probably wouldn’t be super sustainable to get a small pickup but it would change my freakin life!!!!!!! there’s an old gmc sonoma for 900 in a guys yard but its been there for like a year and he’s lowk crazy so im scared to go knocking on his door to ask what’s wrong with it
